Something To Gnaw On: Recent Episodes

Nathan Vainio

If you have a short attention span, or limited time to dig into a bible study, this might be the devotional podcast for you. The goal is simple: to offer a concise study of the Bible (the target timeframe is 15 minutes) in such a way that people truly gnaw on biblical truth (both mentally and spiritually) throughout their day. And admittedly, the podcast will vary from a bible study in bite size form, to what may look and sound like personal journal entries. Jeremiah 31:34 talks about each of us knowing God firsthand.... it is my hope that this podcast spurs each person deeper in their knowledge OF God, and their experience WITH God. Welcome to Something To Gnaw On!

There was a 4 part message from God to King Ahaz: Be Careful, Be Quiet, Don't Fear, and Don't lose heart. In the past two episodes we covered "Be Careful" and addressed the fear and losing heart issues. This episode tackles the "Be Quiet Statement". Quite possibly one of the most difficult things for us humanoid's to do!!!

This episode starts in Alaska, jumps back in time to Joshua and Jericho, bypasses Isaiah 7 to hit a verse or two in James, at which point in time we will be ready to hit Isaiah 7:4.

I think this will be a solid challenge to anyone who takes the time to listen, especially those who want to take their game to the 'next level'.... there is a challenge for you right at the end!!! (that's not too much of a teaser is it? I suppose you could jump to the end tho..... anyhow, enjoy, God Bless! Nate

this episode is a continuation of Part 4, and is a deeper dive into what it means to "BE CAREFUL" in Isaiah 7.

This episode is the first of a few episodes that involve on of Israel's most notoriously evil kings, and his interaction with Gods man..... Isaiah. If ever there was a wicked man in leadership, this guy would be on the top of the list. But that's not the story.

The story here is not that it would be easy for anyone to dismiss him and throw him under the proverbial moral bus, .... no, the story is that a Holy and Loving God deals with Ahaz in an incredibly calculated and merciful manner, without diminishing the necessity and use of judgment. That is the story!

This is the story of a step by step encounter with God, and ultimately I wish Ahaz had responded better, but it certainly highlights a just God. All that being said, this first episode on Ahaz is simply a background study on his kingdom, and the general moral climate in Judah and Jerusalem. Call this 'the set-up'!

Without question, there are a few challenges this episode, but we will really get into some good stuff next week, the nitty gritty back and forth between Ahaz - Isaiah - and The Almighty.

If you want to read ahead for next week, check out Isaiah 7, 2 Kings 16, & 2 Chronicles 28.

Enjoy! Be challenged!! And get into the word for yourself!!!

"""Get into the Word, and let the Word get into you!"""

After spending weeks on the "Crash Course Through The Old Testament" it's time to take the 'scenic-route' and spend a little time digging into the book of Isaiah. This will not be a verse by verse, deep dive into the book... it will be more of a drive-by bible study that tackles some of the more major themes that weave their way through the book.

This episode begins by looking at the relationships, and settings that Isaiah is ministering from. Chapter 1 begins by identifying the kings that Isaiah served under, and so we will begin looking at them to get an idea on what's going on in the kingdom during Isaiah's ministry. (and one fun element in this episode will be the time we spend digging into some archaeological details that really cause part of this story to come to life!)

We will also dig into some of the minor prophets and see how they are interconnected. And, as always, there will be some solid application that I believe will challenge everyone who takes the time to listen in.... I thoroughly believe it will be a blessing to you!!!

Blessings

I have wanted to re-air this episode for a while. It is both fun, and has a solid message. Listen in and enjoy an episode that tackles our human tendency to delay action when presented with truth. And the characters in this episode is yours truly, as an 8th grade punk, and a guy from John 3 by the name of Nicodemus.

(Next week I anticipate getting back into the sub-series from A Crash Course Through The Old Testament called "The Scenic Route Through The Book Of Isaiah". I will be hitting on some of the major themes throughout the book.... and I am not sure if I should be suprised at how timely it is in our culture, but I am pretty sure you will find it that way also!!!

Backstory: two days before this episode posted, I had NOTHING ready! I had plenty in my head, but nothing on paper. That night in church I sensed God saying ‘let’s do something different. Instead of something scripted, it’s time to shoot from the hip and just talk about what I have seen, what I have heard, and what I have experienced over the last few years at James River Church.’ ( disclaimer: I’m just an average member, not staff member, and I share this if my own volition).

So this is what this is about..... a testimony of sorts...... on short notice.

I thought I would be able to just share... But it broke me as I relived just a FEW of the things that have happened over the last couple of years. It wrecked me.... so please forgive my pauses and my tears, but in the process I pray that this episode will ignite your faith in our God and Father who is mightily at work!!!

God Bless

My conversation with Luke Taylor continues on this episode. Luke has a podcast called Cross-References, and he has about 50 episodes specifically on the book of Ezekiel. As has been the case with this entire series, we will be moving pretty fast over some topics, but when the dust settles, I believe you will have a good understanding of it's layout, and also a solid base of hope that is found in the prophets. Amid the judgements in this book, there is much to be encouraged and uplifted by!!!

Soooooooo, the opportunity presented itself to have a conversation with Luke Taylor about the Book of Ezekiel..... and I jumped all over it. Luke has a podcast called Cross-References, and he has about 50 episodes specifically on the book of Ezekiel. So this week we are going to abandon the study in Isaiah, skip over Jeremiah and Lamentations, and dive into a conversation about Ezekiel.

In a crash course throught the Old Testament, I had the totally misguided idea that in the same way that I busted through some of the other books, that I could do the same with the Prophets, and Isaiah.

Well folks...... I can't tell you right now how many episodes I'll be doing in this book, but this crash course is slowing down to the speed of a slow-motion train wreck as we dig in to what some call the 5th Gospel, or the Mini-Bible.

This book is packed with so much.... I will probably still do it a disservice with the speed at which I run through it, but as is always my goal, I hope it spurs you on to dig in further for yourself!

Enjoy, and be blessed!!

Uncover the depth of the Old Testament prophets with me, Nate Vainio, as we traverse the themes of judgment and hope that are intricately woven into their divine messages. It's a journey that promises to reshape your understanding of God's holiness and the significance of salvation. The prophets weren't just harbingers of impending doom; they balanced their warnings with promises of restoration and salvation. Through a compelling story of a preacher's quest for awakening his congregation's faith, we explore how contemporary culture often sidesteps the uncomfortable reality of God's justice, choosing instead a cozier but incomplete image of His love. By the end of this episode, you'll see that the toughest divine words are spoken from a place of love, with the purpose of igniting a profound transformation within us.

This episode goes beyond just listening; it equips you with practical strategies to elevate your study of the prophetic scriptures. I'll lay out the roadmap for understanding the significance of context, translation, and application when engaging with these ancient texts. By employing tools like timelines and embracing translations such as the NLT and The Message, you'll gain a solid baseline for digging into any of the writings from the Prophets. And next week we'll use these tools to dig into Isaiah.

Think back to a moment from your childhood that still stings – for me, Nate Vainio, it was a seemingly trivial reading mishap that echoed far beyond the classroom walls. Join me as I unravel how a burst of laughter at a mispronounced word can shape a 'don't care' shell, designed to shield from vulnerability but often leading to a spiritual disconnect. In today's heartfelt episode, we traverse the shadows of our past to see how God longs for us to take it to Him!

As we navigate these waters together, we'll reflect on the poignant story of Ephraim from Jeremiah 31:18-20, where a blend of deep remorse and divine compassion teaches us that hurt has a place in God's plan for restoration, not shame. Pain, though an unwelcome companion, can often be the compass that directs us back to a path of healing. I'd challenge you to embrace life's uncomfortable exposures with faith in God's unwavering grace and capacity to what we think of as impossible.

Embark on a spiritual expedition with us as we navigate the vibrant landscape of the Psalms in our latest series installment, A Crash Course Through the Old Testament. Imagine discovering a timeless mixtape where each track resonates with the highs and lows of the human experience, and that's the Book of Psalms for you – a compilation not bound by chronology but by the raw emotions and themes that connect us all. With voices ranging from David to Moses and Solomon, these ancient lyrics shift the lens from historic narrative to the personal, inviting a deeper sense of biblical fellowship. And as we peel back the layers of this profound poetry, we reveal not only the heart of the psalmists but also the enduring relevance of their words.

As we immerse ourselves in the Psalms, we'll find solace in David's act of finding courage within himself during his darkest moments, a timeless lesson in spiritual resilience. These sacred verses offer a wellspring of encouragement, and I'm here to guide you in selecting the perfect Bible version, like the NLT, to unlock their full potential. My father’s deep dive into Psalm 51 for his master's thesis unpacks the elegance and intricacy of David’s language, illustrating how various translations can illuminate distinct facets of his plea for mercy.

This weeks episode continues through the fast paced overview of the Old Testament. This week we look at the book of Job, a unique book in the OT Line-up.

Take a listen and get a grasp on one of the oldest questions people have ... "WHY DO BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE?" and I would submit that a great follow-up question would be "HOW DO GOOD PEOPLE HANDLE LIFE WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO THEM?" And those answers will be covered quickly in this episode.

Are you prepared to uncover the spiritual significance behind the season of Christmas? This special holiday episode is a break from our recent pursuit of the Old Testament, starting at the opposite end of the book: The Book of Revelation. We bring parallels from two seemingly different realms - one, a brave man who dared to infiltrate Auschwitz to combat the Nazis and the other being Jesus' divine counter-offensive against evil. You'll gain a deeper understanding of the significance of Jesus' birth within the context of spiritual warfare and the devil's relentless attempts to steal, kill, and destroy.

In the next part, we converse about the ultimate gift that Christmas presents to us - salvation through Jesus Christ. And our journey concludes with the words of Jesus from John 14:27, a promise of His unwavering peace that provides us courage and strength to face every possible trial. So, tune in and let this special episode be a source of comfort and encouragement to you and your loved ones this Christmas season.

IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!!! Ladies and Gent's, this is the last book in section 2 of the Old Testament, the last of the history books. (and fair warning, there were a ton of trucks driving by the house during recording, so you might hear the sound of our economy at, wink, wink)

Nehemiah is one of those books that everyone has got to read, especially if you are in any form of leadership - or working on any kind of project - advancement - or simply moving forward in you walk with the Lord.

It highlights the challenges we face in such circumstances and is a great case study in triumph over adversity. Additionally, it hits key elements regarding what it takes to maintain what is gained in the victory, how to steward God's blessings - God's gifts.

Enjoy!!

I could not resist! I needed to take a bit more time with this book. Did you know that there was a connection between the Book of Esther and World War 2? I will say it suprised me, but the connection (if you were unaware, like me) is astounding.

At the same time, there is SOOOO much in this book that is captures my attention..... and there is so much that I didn't even touch on (like most of the books we've covered so far). Anyhow, I hope this episode piques your curiosity, its an easy book to read, a quick read...... but a book that willl get you digging, and gnawing on scripture. It is more of a story than a theological proof.

God Bless!

What if I told you that some of the most boring parts of the Bible held some of the richest gems? Ok, I hate that kind of a salesman setup, but I'll tell you that taking the time to understand the lists that Ezra puts together in these two books will make it come alive! Additionally, you have to step back a bit to get to know Ezra and where he fits in the timeline of the Exile to see the value of these two books (or three if you want to divide Chronicles, lol!)

What you end up with in this episode is a case study in a legacy being passed successfully. It isn't exactly pretty, but it's successful! (and along the way we pick up a little story about a Crow named Joe, wink wink wink!!!)

It is amazing how the Bible is woven together, how stories build upon stories to bring clarity to truth. It is amazing how you can study a topic, and then come back and find pieces of the story you missed the first time around.... and they don't change the meaning, they intensify the clarity and deepen the understanding. I love this about the bible.

Don't let the Bible become an intimidating big book. This series is intended to give you a framework to process the Old Testament, to digest the truth of God's Word, and to solidify your faith and understanding of God's word.

Blessings!!!

When you are able to break things down into manageable parts, that "THING" is no longer daunting. And that's what this series is attempting to do.

This week we start into the second section of the Old Testament of the Bible. The second section is called the History Books, and is comprised of 12 books. This podcast will address the first three books in a broad sense in this 21 minute episode.

What to expect: The goal here is to set the chronology, so that it is understood when the events in these books happened, and then to look at how they relate to other portions of the bible. Additionally, this week we will add layer to the mix of looking at proper context to get accurate interpretation and application of scripture. Lastly, we always see ways in which each of the books of the Old Testament point to Jesus in the New Testament..... and those details are incredibly beautiful (in my opinion)

When it's over, the goal would be for listeners to be better equipped and less overwhelmed when reading the Bible, resulting in more people getting into the Scriptures for themselves........ and reaping the benefits thereof!!!!!!!!!

Blessings

"The Bible is a bit intimidating! It's big and I have no idea where to start" "It's confusing" "It doesn't make sense." Is that you?

In the same way that you would use a map to get the big picture of an area before traveling through, people should get a map of the bible, and look at it from a 'birds-eye' view before diving into any books. That's what this episode of the Gnaw Initiative is all about. It is designed to give a quick look at the books of the Old Testament in such a way that a person can see how they are all interconnected, and all pointing to Jesus Christ in the New Testament.

HOPEFULLY, this will reduce the intimidation factor and give listeners a framework to hang on to the information within its pages. And if you are a seasoned student of the bible, well..... I hope this is a good refresher course for you!

Enjoy!

I am excited to be back after a week off, and ready to kick off a new season of SOMETHING TO GNAW ON!!! This episode will give a quick synopsis, you might even call it a syllabus, regarding this idea of the GNAW INITIATIVE... which, simply put, is all about getting some basic tools and information out there for people to take the initiative and study scripture for themselves.

Even if you are a 'seasoned' student of the bible, this could be a great refresher course on some basics of bible study and understanding.

Ultimately, the goal of the podcast is to encourage listeners to dig further into scripture for themselves....... It is my intent for this G-I to accomplish that!!!

This episode will give a rough outline of the goals, a list of topics to be covered in further episodes, and a quick study in the longest Psalm...... Psalm 119.... (just to give you something to chew on, ;)

God Bless

Your only hint about this episode is this: A handwritten letter is lost art. ... an art form that my wife is quite good at. The story here is simply of a time when she put her art on display.... for me to see!

As I write this it seems so serious, and it is, but I promise to sprinkle in a bit of my art form...(humor) for you guys, but you're gonna have to listen in to catch the sarcastic humor! In fact, this might be an episode for husbands and wives to sit down and listen together... (awwwwww!!!)

And as always, it illustrates a powerful scriptural truth that everyone needs to gnaw on this week!!!

Enjoy & God Bless!

PS......... cheat code time: remember Jeremiah 31 '....God will write it on your heart....'

Sometimes I look back on my life (especially with stories like this!) and wonder, "What was I thinking?" And the truth of the matter was that it was all about self! And sometimes we go through the motions of wisdom, but really are just working the system to get what our flesh wants, and to have as close to a guilt free conscience in the process. FYI...... it doesn't happen! Oh yes, we try..... but we fail miserably!!!

This episode looks at a few passages from Proverbs, 1 Corinthians, 1 John, and it wouldn't be a true STGO without a 'slice 0 life' story from my younger years, LOL!!!!

Enjoy!!!

Scripture References:

· Proverbs 22:3 “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions… The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.” NLT

· Proverbs 21:16 “The person who strays from common sense will end up in the company of the dead.”

· Proverbs 19:3 “People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the Lord.”

· Proverbs 13:1 “A wise child accepts a parents discipline, a mocker refuses to listen to correction”

Have you ever had an "Awkward Moment"?   Well, I am sure we all have, but hopefully this little anecdote will help bring a little perspective... and a bible reference in Romans just might solidify a good perspective!

Also, be sure to check out the facebook page for a message that I have not been able to upload to the podcast (as of yet).  It has to do with this next year/season of the podcast and a survey that is going to be the wind in the sails of the season.

Here it is folks!!! The final two episodes packaged in one!! This episode takes a look at David as a parent, and the difficulty he had with three of his kids: Amnon, Absalom, Adonijah, and the success with the golden boy...... Solomon. The episode dives into the personalities of some of the kids and the marital dynamics that made the situation what it was. Additionally, David does some things significantly different with Solomon so he doesn't make the same mistakes again.

Ultimately, there is redemption.... but lets be honest, its a tough road. It is my hope that the reality of redemption is caught by the listener, and that it would inspire you to redeem the time you have with your kids!!! The keys are in the episode!!! Blessings.

Edit: (Frankly this is a great sermon so I want to leave it, HOWEVER.... our church has several services, and the detail I mention in the podcast, was not included in the sermon that was posted...... so, fair warning ⚠️, the reference is not included....... but it’s a good message!!!!! The sermon referenced in the episode.

There is no shortage of sermon series, teachings, or seminars on recovering from hurt, pain, and injustice.  In a word, our society has played to the victim.   We get a phrase called the victim mentality.  And this podcast will not sweep the pain of loss and hurt under the rug.  However, this particular episode addresses the restoration process in David's life, and for those willing to walk down the path, the outcome is freedom from the shame and guilt and the paralyzing nature of having hurt others.

It's not easy, and some would say 'it's not fair', but take a listen and see how God deals with David.   And if you are that person who has hurt people in your past, I hope and pray that you find a divine healing... a divine restoration... and that you find that God still see's you as useful.

Once again, my buddy (Bobby) is part of another Alaskan adventure where I learned a lot about ....... PERSPECTIVE! Not just right or wrong perspective, but the fact that whatever our perspective is, it’s an incomplete depiction of what is really going on in life! There is so much more to life than what we see at any given moment. It’s good to have a right perspective, but we’d all be better off getting close to The One who sees it all, and knows it all!!!

Additionally, this episode sets the stage for listeners to dive into their own bible-studies of biblical personalities that experienced rapid changes in their perspective of life, but managed to stay on course.... see the show notes below for references regarding the lives of Joshua, Joseph, David, and Paul

Joseph- Genesis 30-50
Joshua- you might start with Exodus 17:8 and follow his involvement with Moses……. Then the victory dance starts in the book of Joshua
David- 1 Samuel 16 thru 2 Samuel
Paul- start with Acts 8 and read to the end of Acts.

Luke wears many hats! Pastor, husband, father, ... he works in radio and has a couple of podcasts, one of which is Cross-References - a bible study that usually runs between 30-45 minutes and does an excellent job highlighting how scriptural truth applies in our ever changing culture.

Today, however, you get to listen to a bootleg copy of an interview Luke did of me a couple of weeks back, that will air on his podcast this coming Monday, as we discuss the use of stories to relay scriptural truth effectively.

What heartless punk would steal a kids' bat, and throw him in prison?  Sound unreal??   I assure you it's not.   And unfortunately, it's the front end of a very tough story.

Certainly we all have these moments of difficulty, of being treated unjustly, of being injured  - either physically, mentally, or spiritually.    So, how do you bounce back?  How do you handle it?

This weeks episode looks at a passage from Romans, and a character in the book of Genesis for some guidance on the issue of bouncing back from adversity.

I had the distinct privilege of sitting down with a long time friend, and brother in Christ, and revisiting some battles won long ago.    It had almost a reunion feeling.

Years ago we walked a path together through pain and frustration, and while we each had our own specific battle to fight..... we both won!

In this conversation we revisit those battles, those victories, and new adventures that God has led us on!

Did you ever see The Jerry Springer Show?   Well,  for those of you who think things in 'Bible-Times' were perfect  haven't met the Hebrew Karen found in 2 Samuel 3.

This episode will take a quick look at the life of Michal, daughter of King Saul, and wife of King David.   It's a tough look at growing up in a home with a loose cannon for a dad.  We also take a comparative look at one of David's other wives, Bathsheba, to round out this Jerry Springer like episode!!

In the end.... you should have plenty of scripture to gnaw on!!!

Additionally, we will take a quick look at the Biblical precedent for writing down our stories of God working and creating a framework where they can be relived for our children... creating a rich, godly herritage!

*** Bonus content at end.

Maybe you were better than me in school, and somehow managed to avoid the principals office.   Good for you!!

This week I am taking a look at my last trip to the principals office, my senior year of high school... and it reminded me of a few characters in the bible who landed in the ultimate principals office ... King David and King Saul.

This episode will contrast how each of these two kings responded when they sinned against God.

BONUS CONTENT:   additionally, there are 3 extra pieces of info that came up in the study that I want to share....   they have to do with some of the geography and historical uses of the region we will be discussing..... I found it to be quite interesting, and it brought a fuller understanding of the text, but alas.... I have boxed myself in with the time frame!!!   So, hit pause if necessary, and come back later and listen in then, or plow right on through.   Also, in this study I came across what appeared to be a discrepancy  between two texts that were telling the same story.  So I wanted to take a moment to show how to work through these hiccups when they arise.   If you like biblical history, and getting into the back stories of the old testament, then you'll enjoy this one!!!

In the first part of Leadership Team Conflicts we highlighted the character and nature of Joab, a very difficult person to have working for you - or along side you. He is focused on the organizational goal, but self absorbed - and if the agenda of the organization and his personal goals collide, then there is no amount of manipulation he won't exercise to maintain control.... including murder in this case.

In the second episode we began to look at four characteristics that come to the surface in dealing with Joab, as well as other conflicts in his life. In the second episode we looked at the first two: The Certainty of God's Sovereignty, and the Certainty of God's Call. David had a firm grasp on the sovereignty of God (that is to say, he had a clear understanding that God was all knowing, ever-present, and clearly has the strength necessary to rule over his creation.... and David has submitted to this). At the same time David has a clear understanding that this same God has anointed him to be king, and prophesied over his reign, promising a dynasty... and the combination of these two provide an incredibly strong foundation for withstanding the difficulties of life.

This episode will dive into the last two of the four characteristics that we see in David, in this study: The Consequence of Confession, and the Consequence of Godly Coping Skills.

What a crazy, long title!!

In this episode we begin to dig in to the four characteristics evident in David's life that  become the tools to dealing with the Joab's of life...  In the event that you missed the last episode on Joab, please take a few moments and dig into that episode first...  It will make this episode make more sense.

The beauty of it all is that these are not just for the Joab's in life, but for all life.   Certainly, you won't be able to successfully deal with a Joab without, but you will surely be blessed in other areas if these are present in your life!!!!

Be Blessed!

What do you do when the "7 Steps To Conflict Resolution" don't seem to work?  What happens when you are locked in a situation within an organization with a member of the team that has a rogue attitude.   Fire him (or her), right?  Sure.... but what if firing them will split the organization?

In today's episode, we dig into David's relationship with Joab...  this is the first half of this part of the study, and it simply highlights the issues on the table that David is having to contend with.   Next week we will dig into the nitty gritty of how David handled this brutal relationship for the better part of 40 years!

If every decision I made was logical, this would have been first!  But, alas, such is not the case.   I am loving this study into the life of King David, and specifically how he handled conflict, and it is truly eye opening!     Next week will be an episode on David and Joab, and it's gonna be a good one!!!    All that said, it looks as if there will be several others to follow as well and this episode will lay out some of the foundational perspectives and direction leading this study.   The hope is that it would help each episode make a bit more sense, and maybe I can leave a bit of detail out of the episodes if I dump it here to start!!!   After all,  when you are shooting for 15 minute targets.... every second counts!!!

Anyhow, This is a short episode.... enjoy.... and get ready for the next episode with King David and Joab!

Conflict is like death and taxes... it's not a question of if it happens, but "WHEN". And then, to answer all the good news-reporter questions, there is the question of "HOW" often, "HOW" intense, "WHO" is involved, "WHERE" or what setting it occurs in.

King David's life is fraught with conflict. And there is a baseline level of conflict, but what happens when it rears it's head in various settings? Are all conflicts created equal? I would submit that they are not.

The record of David's life captures several of these different settings: Sibling conflicts, children conflicts, spousal conflicts, leadership conflicts, governmental and political conflicts, conflicts in friendships, and the outright chest-pounding of war.

This first episode dives right into the middle of the conflict between David and Saul, and looks at how to have a Godly attitude, and perspective, in the midst of the mess.

Watergate is a great example of a cover-up attempt.... a conspiracy.   The basics of a cover-up are engrained in us all...  from stealing cookies and breaking windows to telling lies (whether little or big.)   At the same time, this concept of cover-up is at the heart of the resurrection story, and it's back story.   But so often we get lost in the weeds.  So often we get in the habit of throwing around theological terms like 'atonement' and 'sacrifice' and we lose contact with the situations that demand their presence.  This episode will be dropped on Good Friday.... a day where terms like this, or passover,  are used at length...  but I'd like to go back to the beginning .... to the need for such a thing... to the genesis of it all.  Literally, to Genesis 3.   What happened that triggered this Holy Weekend?  What happened in the heart of man, and what was happening in the heart of God?

Thinking the battle is over could prove to be a fatal mistake... certainly there are seasons of peace - times of rest...   but make no mistake about it - the Devil is always on the prowl...  and like most predators in nature, he doesn't attack head on.  He choses stealth, underhanded methodologies, and seeks vulnerability (aka the path of least resistance).   And he has a knack for taking advantage of our own fleshly tendencies to self-destruct, or give in to the 'deeds of the flesh'... then step in and finish the job with minimal effort.    But it doesn't have to be this way!  God has made a way out!!  But first, we need to see the reality of the problem.

There is always a lot of chatter about leadership, and rightfully so... we need good leadership.  Whether it be in our homes, our churches, our workplaces, our military, or our public offices, it is absolutely essential.    What I fear is too often overlooked is the ability of those leaders to mentor highly effective replacements for themselves.

The Radioactive Mentor looks at how Moses led a nation, but mentored one man... Joshua.

This is the first part of a series, however, this series will roll out sporatically.

Moses' mentorship of  Joshua isn't a list of behaviors to be checked off, it is a front row seat to one of the most epic relationships in the Bible.  And it is powerful!!!

Have you ever had to deal with a skunk?  This episode dredges up an old story from my high school days in Montana and looks metaphorically at dealing with those situations in life that are like dealing with skunks... those situations you avoid, those people you avoid,... those situations or people you address head on and end up paying the price when things blow up.   But more than the actual people or situations, this episode looks at dealing with the spiritual battle behind these situations and how to find victory!

Have you ever been blindsided?  You are succeeding, progressing, and accomplishing goals when, out of nowhere, something takes you out at the knees.  This episode takes a look at an event in the early 1900's, compares it with a few verses in the bible,  and looks to get to the bottom of the issue.... the problem of being blindsided and taken out of the game of life.

Once again I dig into my formative years for a story that may illustrate a good litmus test of revival, or awakening.   Admittedly, it begins a bit light hearted, but it is plenty serious, and, I believe, spot on!

Someone defined frustration as the difference between expectation and reality.   This makes so much sense to me.    Why do people get mad?  They expect one thing, yet experience something completely different.

In this episode I address some of those issues from the bible that range from disheartening to maddening when the promise seems so solid..... and the reality so distant.

In this episode, I will be weaving a story from my freshman year of high school together with Jesus' words from Matthew 10.  If you have ever struggled to share your faith, or step out in obedience (with regard to your faith) because of fear (or concern) over what other people might think of you...... well, then this may be the right episode for you!!!
