Andrew Stanton, director of Finding Nemo and Wall-E, followed those classic films by helming the biggest box office flop of all time! Mark brings in his knowledge of the original novel, and Danny uses the box office to support a new theory about why the movie died like a Zoldangan struck by the explosive round from a Thark rifle!

Danny goes on a thrilling adventure to interview his parents about Mission Impossible! They provide valuable insight as fans of the T.V. show - before it was a movie directed by Pixar’s Brad Bird! Danny explains why Babe could be the greatest film of all time, The Fast and the Furious changes Mark’s life, and Danny’s Mom and Dad talk about their favorite childhood movie memories.
“Cars 2 is art in the way bad stuff can be art.” Teacher and director Luke Hayden joins Mark and Danny to watch the best Cars - 2! It’s 2 movies smashed together like the car that gets killed in the first five minutes. Luke shares his formula one knowledge, Danny’s laptop explodes (for real this time), and Mark confuses his colonels. It’s the bomb!

This week Mark and Danny are watching the first of the Toy Story Toons which played before Cars 2 and Jason Segel’s The Muppets. Mark learns that Medieval Times only sells chicken, Danny airs his grievances against the people who put Toy Story 2 gags in a Toy Story 3 short, and they both make a pitch for the future of the Muppets. If you neither love nor hate Barbie then who knows, man.

Mark and Danny try to make it through as many Mater shorts as they can fit in an episode! They also watch La Luna, the short made by the director of Luca. They also talk about the Black Swan/Wrestler pairing, Omnimax, and Danny’s serious, respectful review of Mater Private Eye. More goofy Javier Bardem!

For Fetch’s 84th episode, the contestants received a mission via “video chat” with EPCOT’s Turtle Talk’s Crush. And after they spent all their money on Pixar, they pranked a child for cheap! Danny shares some more of his horrifying formative experiences, and Mark explains the difference between Jim Conroy and Tim Conway. If you’re here because you accidentally misspelled “feet,” welcome! Beware this CURSED EPISODE. Mark and Danny fight their way through Discord updates and laptop malfunction to talk about an indie short by Jim Capobianco and a terrifying 4-D Broadway-musical-inspired ad for a Bug’s Life. Can the lads talk about terrifying mascots, Beauty and the Beast’s ballroom scene, and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 before their computers explode?
It’s been a year. A year of Pixar Podcasts. Let’s celebrate by going to Disneyland! And World, and Paris, and some other ones. Joining us is special guest and experienced theme-park spieler Grace Nowak, who also has actually been to Disneyland Paris! So jealous. There’s a lot of Pixar rep in these parks, and we’re gonna try to cover it all, attractions dead and alive. Celebrate 100 Years of Mark and Danny.
The Rides: Flik’s Flyers, Francis’s Ladybug Boogie, Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train, Luigi’s Flying Tires, Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters, Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, Radiator Springs Racers, Games of Pixar Pier, Incredicoaster, Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind, Jessi’s Critter Carousel, Pixar Pal-A-Round, Toy Story Mania!, Alien Swirling Saucers, RC Racer, Slinky Dog Dash, Slinky Dog Zigzag Spin, Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop, *Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Cars quatre roues rallye, Crush’s Coaster, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy, Monsters Inc Laugh Floor, Monsters Inc Mike & Sully to the Rescue!, Monsters Inc Ride & Go Seek, Nemo & Friends SeaRider, Pixar Play Parade, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Turtle Talk with Crush, and Woody’s Roundup Village
ART. Mark and Danny watch the next Mater’s Tall Tale and Day and Night, Teddy Newton’s Pixar short which was released with Toy Story 3. They also talk about whether Darth Vader was a good dad, expectations at movie score concerts, and of course the hottest podcast topics of 2021. Media Literacy!
Just two episodes away from the show’s birthday (yes, it’s number 51), Mark and Danny watch Dug’s Special Mission about Dug’s birthday misadventures and George and A.J., an iTunes animatic about the nurses from Up. Is The Revenant a western? Do audiences get wormholes? Where does Cast Away land in Danny’s Zemeckis ranking? Dogkind was born on earth - it was never meant to die there.
Mark and Danny are joined by Tessa Widenhofer to talk about Up, the most video-essayed movie of all time. Danny talks about his D&D campaign with Mandy Patinkin, Mark and Tessa discuss Michael Giacchino’s signature moves, and everyone learns why Dug belongs on Succession. Bring Mr. Incredible and Pals with Commentary to Disney Plus!
Sick Day! Mark struggles through a WALL-E DVD extra and the short that prepped audiences for Up. Danny talks about getting Marwen-pilled at the Zemeckis Fest, his Mo x Auto fan fiction research, and his pet theory about how the makers of Lilo and Stitch have been trying to make him forget what he knows is true.
Mark and Danny respectfully watch the first four episodes of Mater’s Tall Tales, world-expanding comedy shorts which aired on Disney Channel and before the classic Disney film Bolt (2008). Danny’s brother goes to see Polar Express, Larry the Cable Guy falls in love with Tyler Perry’s Madea, and Danny reveals some of his most popular reviews on Letterboxd. If we’re lying, we’re crying!
Mark and Danny are joined by filmmaker Gene Arnold to talk about a movie so phenomenal that calling it the best Pixar movie feels like an understatement. I know we keep saying these are all the best but this really is (maybe until 2017, Danny adds). We also talk about Jar Jar Binks, whether scores need to be memorable to be great, and this movie’s impact on two cultural institutions: the Academy Awards and the Boss Baby.
Gene’s partner Alex is making jewelry!: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ATGZhandmadeShop
Get ready for a FIGHT! Mark and Danny spend most of the episode arguing about Presto, the short that played before WALL-E. Your Friend the Rat has a very nice song. The lads also discuss laugh tracks, Danny’s best-cartoons bracket featuring Home Alone, and why they’re NOT going to be talking about Succession even though you can hear that they want to. Jack Black.
It’s a real one. Who knew a movie celebrating Pixar could make Danny so grouchy. Mark’s just rewatched Goodfellas (and is therefore not grouchy). We also discuss the ethics of podcast editing, our favorite effects-heavy films, and discovering cinema through our parents’ movie collections. This is our record for our children.
This week, the lads are joined by SPRINGFIELD NATIVE Dan Heidorn! The co-director of Monster’s Inc also helmed 2007’s The Simpsons Movie, so we have to talk about it. Dan (who only watches The Simpsons) shares celebrity gossip and the details of his beef with Vermont. Then we kill the Letterboxd game. We also discuss James Corden as Flanders and our worst movie dates! Move over Michael B. Jordan, this is real anime.
On this episode magnifique, we’re joined by Jay Salahi, director of Northwood Pie. We serve an unusual dish - two hours of audio focused almost entirely on the movie. We break down why the little chef at Gusteau’s is a justified(?) jerk, debate whether Linguini’s lack of a character arc matters, and of course, talk about one of the finest monologues in all of cinema. Anyone can podcast - does that mean we should?
It’s the mid-2000s and we’re talking PENGUINS. And surfing. That’s it. Danny tries to be nice when Mark invites people on the pod he doesn’t know. Who are these people you may ask? Great question, since Danny is writing the description this week and he only remembers that Thomas, Mark’s brother, went to Costco and is working on a movie set, and Mason, Mark’s friend, is an actor who didn’t like Avatar 2. We forgot to mention Chris Buck, the actual co-director of this film. Why does this kepe happening?? Much like Christmas, we could’ve used some more ChubbChubbs.
Two bootlegs give Danny and Mark a chance to enjoy the AC while their children watch the Finding Nemo musical, a 40-minute adaptation which was performed at Animal Kingdom until 2020. Mark wages war on Disney, Danny talks about an amazing woman, and they compare the careers of Michael Bay and Adam Sandler.
It’s a Podcast of Us! Danny and Mark bring you two shorts for the price of one, a special feature on the Cars DVD and the film which played before Ratatouille. They also talk about Dave Bautista dream roles, Danny’s prediction for his most watched actor of 2023, and M Night Shyamalan’s way with words.
Finally someone who can save the podcast! Mark and Danny are joined by Caleb Bunn from The Snub Club and Star Wars Therapy. He sweeps the Letterboxd game, teaches us about interstate development, and rewrites our intros. We also talk about the career of Brendan Fraser, Tortillas, and what happens when Tony Shalhoub loses his Tony. CARS
This week Danny and Mark watch Oli-Schau (Oli’s Chance), another short directed by Saschka Unseld, director of Strasse der Spezialisten and one of this podcast’s best discoveries. Things get hairy after they realize there are no subtitles. The lads also discuss the best films of the last ten years (besides the obvious one,) the baby nut controversy, and the United Arab Emirates.
This week Danny and Mark watch a lovely little short about two musicians, Bass and Treble, who have a bit of a conflict, much like Danny and Guillermo del Toro, and Bong Joon Ho, and the fans of Puss in Boots. Mark returns from the opera, the lads discuss capitalism again, and no one knows how to deal with fans of David Lynch’s Dune.
DANNY’S HOTTEST TAKES! This week we’re joined by Bethaney Brown, model, cosplayer, and cool pal, to talk about Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride! Mark goes to the opera, Danny lusts after Michelle Pfeiffer, and Bethaney demands stricter rules for crows. The Fraserthon reveals the greatest final shot of all time.
American animation at its best! We watch some shorts from the Incredibles DVD: Jack-Jack Attack, Mr. Incredible and Pals (with commentary), and The Incredible Socks. We also talk about our own short films, Billy Wilder (the real one and the fictional one), and deep cuts from the 90s. We've got Jack-Jack Attack commentary. We've got social commentary. By the end, you’ll be sick of all the commentary!
Join us for Dream Therapy! We watch videos from an art installation that were uploaded to YouTube! It’s melancholy and awesome! Danny goes INSANE trying to remember a childhood online flash game, please help. The dog is walking in the room. Are corporations good? The Godfather tomato sauce gets the SEAL OF APPROVAL. Love is the Message, the Message is All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (we are not officially sponsored by these but they are cool).
It’s our last holiday special of 2022! Time to talk about whales (not THE Whale, nerds), the high frame rate, and how we remember *half of the characters’ names. This is now a Stephen Lang appreciation show. Mark says no one will be as great as Andy Serkis, but Danny defends Sam Worthington. What’s the Gone Girl Defense? Find out on the shores of the Metkayina, where we open Pandora’s box, and discuss the year’s biggest CGI adventure (excluding Spider).
LIVE FROM THE HOLY LAND. Pixar never made a Christmas special, so how can animation nerds celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ? By watching Veggietales! Curl up with cookies for Silly Songs, more Sight and Sound, and Danny’s confession of an unrequited love.
An incredible guest has joined the lads to discuss an incredible movie! Tyler Bourland of CC Farms and Danny’s previous podcast Why Is with Ty and Dan! is here to weigh in on Wakanda Forever’s Disney Gay Couple™, the Family Video that sold CBD, and misleading superhero trailers. This episode is fun for the whole family which means that your whole family can enjoy it and not that they all have to listen to it at the same time.
Danny and Mark talk about Bud Luckey’s Boundin’, the short which played before The Incredibles. It is GOOD. The lads also discuss the Fabelman’s DIS-stribution, Winnie the Pooh’s fatal mistake in 2011, and Mrs. Pennybottom’s Club Where they Make Sourdough Bread and Read Books or Whatever. Also in this episode you’ll hear the voices of Benoit Blanc AND Ringo Starr! OY!
Danny and Mark watch two of Brad Birds’ early screenwriting endeavors, Batteries not Included and Family Dog. They are BAD. However, the lads are not discouraged - they discuss Free Birds, the Pope’s favorite movies, and Maya and Miguel, Brothers and Sisters and Best Friends as well. Enjoy your Thanksgiving hangover with da boys, but whatever you do, don’t walk out after ten minutes.
In this episode, Danny and Mark watch Teddy Newton’s Boys Night Out WHICH IS APPARENTLY ABOUT STRIPPERS. They talk about banned cartoons, Val Kilmer in Tombstone, deep personal stuff, one of the most well-known movie lists, and Val Kilmer in Tombstone. This is a very good and serious episode despite (because of?) the SURPRISE STRIPPER SHORT. Legitimately, this is important for the canon, do not miss!
Another long episode, and well-deserved! Danny’s friend Carson Hume joins the gang to talk about his favorite movie, Andrew Stanton’s Finding Nemo. They also talk about good parenting (again, but deeper this time), all the times Brian Tyree Henry was the best part of a movie he didn’t star in, and gosh-darn excellent vocal performances. Carson and Danny dish on drama and Mark won’t shut up, because he’s excited to make a new friend!
BONJOUR. Mark and Danny discuss the DVD bonus feature Exploring the Reef with Jean-Michel Cousteau. They also talk about the best conservative movies of 2018, Tilda Swinton’s favorite films, and Spongebob Squarepants. Danny hijacks the show to discuss his secret history with a certain clownfish - a history TOO HOT for the Finding Nemo episode. Mark listens.
Femtober 2022 is Here!: https://letterboxd.com/sknauf29/list/femtober-the-requel/
A framing device strands Mark and Danny without a phone. Fortunately, they find themselves right outside Sarah’s haunted mansion. She invites them up to her porch and explains her annual project: watching 31 horror films directed by women in the month of October. She describes the parameters and surprises, the history of the project, and why Mark and Danny are terrible. They also play games, watch a burning car, and encounter a terrifying beast!
Follow Sarah on Letterboxd and Check out Previous Femtobers!: https://letterboxd.com/sknauf29/
The duo is alone and unsupervised once again! After deciding they have nothing much to say, the lads go rogue and make some surprising discoveries about the commentary track for this episode’s subject, the DVD bonus short Mike’s New Car. They also discuss cheese risks, whether Mark will watch the Indian blockbuster RRR (watching it now lol), and Danny’s love of Netflix films like the Trial of the Chicago 7 in a topsy turvy game segment!!!
In this episode, the lads are joined by writer Sarah Knauf to talk about the first Pixar film not directed by John Lasseter, Pete Docter’s Monsters Inc. Sarah comes on to talk about her favorite movie, and Mark immediately tells her she’s wrong. Danny becomes an Avatar (2009) truther. Come for auteurist analysis. Stay to hear Danny telling Mark that he would make a bad father!
On this high-flying space-rangering episode the cadets are joined by Joe Schremmer, who DID NOT edit this episode. Despite this, they were happy to have the musician and audio engineer on to shed some Light on the Buzz surrounding the movie of the Year 2000. The Adventures Begin Starring Tim Allen. And also the hot trash Danny has watched, and Mark’s takes on mid-length movies. And Joe uses his wisdom to critique the pod. So grab your Official Buzz Lightyear Brand Cereal and listen to three dudes try and fail to avoid riffing on a certain 2022 release while weirdly adoring this movie from their childhoods.
Finally, we’re alone again! Danny takes the opportunity to talk about his New York trip and compares Mark to Jonathan Larson. They discuss Raul Julia and bird representation. The games find a surprising connection in the Wasteland, and then it’s time to talk about their first short in quite some time, For the Birds. It all comes back to, once again, Nicole Kidman and the Riders in the Sky. We should’ve flown in July.
On this wonderful @#?/&! of an episode, the lads are joined by film editor and director Julius Jefferson to talk about what will probably be the best sequel they watch, Toy Story 2. Mark wins an Emmy for his work on Succession. Danny talks about the scene that always makes him cry (it’s not where you think!). Julius takes the opportunity to talk about movies we won’t watch for three years! Listen to us while you drive all the way to work, on a Saturday, ALL THE WAY TO WORK.
Brad Bird’s first feature asks if a gun can have a soul. However, the gang is more interested in discussing the casting decision that has everyone talking - Christopher McDonald as Kent Mansley! They’re joined by special guest, actor and director Tanner Garren, who has ALSO teethed using the Bug’s Life Spider Happy Meal Toy. They dissect the idea of “the perfect film” while also catching up on the last four years of never seeing each other :( But now YOU, the listener, get to hear them catch up! In the words of Vin Diesel and Willem Dafoe “We are who we choose to be. Now, choose!”
You can reach Tanner at tannergarrn@gmail.com
The boys are LIVE FROM NEW YORK! With Special Guest: actor, singer, juggler, and Sara Bareilles fan Michael Sigillto, skyping in from NEW JERSEY!! Enjoy the attempt to include everyone in the conversation. Mark talks about where to park in St. Louis, Danny does a good deed, and Michael plays the Letterboxd game with surprising results. Oh, and then they talk about The Prince of Egypt, the acclaimed animated musical of the late 1990s. An all-star cast gets an all-star podcast lineup. Michael and Mark talk about an important part of their childhood, and Danny watches this modern classic for the first time.
It's another difficult episode (and not just because of the audio quality), so the team has help! Theatre historian, world traveler, and highly acclaimed podcast appearer Tori Estes joins Mark and Danny to talk about the year 2016, the best Pixar villains, Akira Kurosawa's Shakespeare adaptations, and the end of one of Danny’s other podcasts.
Mark and Danny talk about the old 52! Toy Story interstitials which were played on ABC in the 90s. They also discuss Bullet Train, movie musicals, and the all time shortest Oscar winners. In the end, they both try to write Toy Story 5.
Geri’s game! Appropriately, Danny and Mark spend most of this episode playing games. Danny goes through his top 100 movies of all time, Mark drops his high school best-of list and tries to pick a fight with George Miller to get Danny interested in juggling notation. They also discuss the Oscars, famous snubs, Pixar sweeps, and cool sociology teachers.
This week Danny and Mark dive into the non-Pixar work of Joe Ranft, the often-forgotten fourth member of the original Pixar Brain Trust. Ranft worked as a storyboard supervisor on both of acclaimed stop-motion director Henry Selick’s films in the 1990s. The boys also talk about the history of aspect ratios, missing childhood memories of these films, and Mark’s adventures on Broadway. Also, more secrets of Danny’s history with the church REVEALED!
It’s a monumental day for the podcast as we reach the first Pixar feature film and have our very first guest, Arts and Culture Reviewer for WMAY Springfield Kevin Hart. It’s the Big One, as we break down every single thing that makes the 1995 film a nearly perfect feature. Also, we try to figure out how to convert our games into a competitive format, while also catching up with an old college buddy.

Sunny days, sweeping the clouds away! Except when they don’t! Luxo Jr.’s Sesame Street appearances don’t stop Mark and Danny from talking about childhood trauma, and how a lot of people underestimate what children can emotionally process. You have to sit through some Emmy talk to get to it, but trust us, it’s worth it.
This week Danny and Mark DEFINITELY spend most of their time talking about Knick Knack. They promise. They also talk about trading card games, what defines a movie musical, and could we categorize movies based on their title’s font?
Everyone has Covid! The lads are fighting for their lives this week as they talk about Aaron Sorkin, the best instant Ramen, and Pixar’s biggest mistake. Is Tin Toy a big leap forward? Should they be nicer to it? Can one seize the means of production by sitting directly in front of the TV?
Mark and Danny talk toasters, trash, and Danny having Covid! This film is a mess, but it’s a good time. The lads discussed whether or not this a proto-Toy Story movie, the car talk guys, and Danny joining the 27 Club (well, he’s not dead yet) with this episode.
In this semi-(but-not-fully)-serious episode, Danny and Mark try to find something to say about the Pixar short, Red’s Dream. A VeggieTales tangent leads to a discussion about faith, religion and Christian movies. They also launch the game show segment of the pod, introducing the Letterboxd Game and the Game of Lists.
Danny and Mark discuss the groundbreaking short Luxo Jr., which changed animation forever. Do either of us have a working VHS player? Why is it called a pencil test if there are no pencils? Do we gender lamps, and why?
Danny and Mark discuss the student films of John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter. They question the Brain Trust’s auteurism in films made when they were younger than our hosts. They also discuss the ghost of Billy Wilder, if the CalArts style exists and is something we should be worried about, and whether the films of Pete Docter caused Mark to lose his mind.
The lads discuss Pixar’s proof of concept videos from the early 80s. They compare them to Stan Brakhage shorts and modern weather reports, and they also briefly touch on Macintosh propaganda, a pencil with lungs, and the aesthetics of early 2000s science television.
Danny and Mark discuss the show’s concept, The Adventures of Andre and Wally B. (1984), Pixar’s very first short film, why any of us are here, and who is responsible for the opening flute music. They also play a game in which they try to provide an insightful commentary track before the film reaches the end of its minute and a half runtime.
