Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are taking on a leading role in studying the genetic variants that affect Black people. This work is important because Black people have a higher risk of certain diseases, such as sickle cell anemia, hypertension, and diabetes. By studying the genetics of Black people, researchers can identify new genetic variants that are associated with these diseases, develop new therapies, and improve the health of Black communities. HBCUs are well-positioned to conduct this research because they have a deep understanding of the unique health needs of Black populations and have access to a large population of Black research participants. HBCUs are also investing in research infrastructure and training the next generation of Black scientists. This work is helping to improve the health of Black communities and to empower Black people to take control of their own health.
HBCUs are conducting a variety of research projects on the genetics of Black people. Some of these projects include:
- Identifying genetic variants that are associated with diseases that disproportionately affect Black people, such as sickle cell anemia, hypertension, and diabetes.
- Developing new therapies for diseases that disproportionately affect Black populations.

In recent years, there has been an increased effort to expand diversity and representation in space exploration. History was made when Keisha Schahaff and her daughter Anastatia Mayers became the first Caribbean women to travel to space. Schahaff, originally from the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, won a coveted seat on a Virgin Galactic spaceflight through a fundraising competition organized by Space for Humanity. She chose to bring her 18-year-old daughter Anastatia, who is currently studying philosophy and physics at Aberdeen University in the UK.
The mother-daughter pair blasted off on an epic journey to the edge of space aboard Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo Unity. During several minutes of weightlessness, they marveled at breathtaking views of Earth against the blackness of space. Their groundbreaking flight inspired people across the Caribbean and proved that the dream of space travel is attainable for women from diverse backgrounds. The Black Vegan Experience is a multicultural educational conference, celebration of African-American ancestry and networking event that was born in November 2019 during a Vitamix demonstration and conversation between a Vegan Teacher, Vegan Nurse, Vegan Nutritionist and Naturopathic Physician. With so many plant-based conferences hosted across the US and locally, there was still little diversity established in most of these medical conferences. This Vegan Quartet sang a new song, one where Black professionals and practitioners would create an educational conference of their own, to address the medical concerns in the Black community and remove the stereotypes attached to Veganism and Black culture. Contributors to this original conversation would go on to form the Committee of Consciousness who have collaborated to host the inaugural event, originally scheduled to debut March 14, 2020, on the rescheduled date of May 15, 2021.
Committee of Consciousness is a newly formed non-profit organization that strives to empower others through education. A percentage of the proceeds from The Black Vegan Experience will go to Committee of Consciousness’ organization to fund building the knowledge base of plant-based nutrition, meal planning, budgeting and related nutrition services in local communities. Executive Director and Event Coordinator, Vonettia Calloway says, “When we know better, we do better.” She and her fellow COC members believe educating others empowers them to make informed choices in addition to helping us all hold each other accountable to higher standards of self-care and caring for Earth. COC plans to partner with other organizations on projects that eradicate food deserts and grant access to healthy food for all. By the end of 2021, COC believes they will be able to provide transportation for families needing this service, one-to-one and group nutrition consultations, referrals to affordable health care and health & wellness workshops within the community.
The Black Vegan Experience, will be a community event, where our keynote speaker, Dr. Milton Mills, from documentaries “What the Health?” and “The Invisible Vegan” (along with producer Jasmine Leyva) will enlighten you on plant-based living, with tentative virtual appearances from Tabitha Brown, other guests, Food, Fun and Fuel for a Vegan Soul…and the Veg-curious of course=)

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The history of Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, which proclaimed the freedom of slaves in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
The delay in the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas was primarily due to the minimal presence of Union troops in the region during the Civil War. As Union forces expanded their control and the war neared its end, General Granger's arrival in Galveston served as a significant moment, delivering the news of freedom to the enslaved population.
Juneteenth quickly became a time for African Americans to celebrate their newfound freedom. The celebrations initially took the form of church gatherings, parades, and community festivities. Over time, the observance of Juneteenth spread to other states and communities, driven by the migration of African Americans to different regions.

For over 19 years, Joronda Montaño has been a strong public health and prevention leader. She co-founded NeckUp CheckUp, an organization that provides mental health checkups to help keep youth and families healthy. Joronda is credited with contributions to the development of innovative prevention programs at non-profit organizations in Phoenix and Mesa, Arizona as well as directly training thousands of youth and adults to maintain positive mental health outcomes. Joronda has been honored as a Tempe Champion for Youth, an annual award given to an adult who displays an outstanding commitment to reducing youth substance misuse.
Her international experience spans 13 different countries on five different continents. Working in poverty reduction, microfinance, permanent agriculture, disaster relief, farming, and equity in education. She finds ease in implementing her strategic planning knowledge to tackle any community challenge. Joronda worked with NGO's, international businesses, and small village councils, addressing pressing environmental challenges for both large and small groups.
Joronda holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Arizona State University is skilled in preventing substance misuse, suicide, violence, negative self-image, risky digital behavior, and bullying. She is a trainer for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills and Mental Health First Aid. Fun fact, Joronda was also a nationally ranked high school track and field athlete before becoming an All-American Collegiate athlete at Arizona State University. She currently coaches’ youth and lives in Phoenix with her husband and four kids.

The Los Angeles Jet Track Club was established in 1973 with a few young athletes from a local elementary school and through the efforts of an all-volunteer coaching staff, this organization has expanded to one hundred and eighty-five athletes, ranging from the age of five to eighteen. We compete nationwide in the USA Track & Field League. No. Respective states will determine whether and when abortions will be legal. Nevertheless, numerous states will resume with no change, and some have even begun making provisions to assist women who live in states that are likely to outlaw abortion.

Thirteen states have so-called trigger laws that make abortion illegal after Roe’s collapse. Some have ancient abortion laws on the books that were invalidated by the Roe decision but could be enforced again. It is hard to forgive your father, who voluntarily chooses to forfeit his obligation to be a father to his child. There are no excuses that could condone this behavior.
How do you heal? How do you push forward? How do you forgive and celebrate a dad that did not father you?
Forgiveness is easier said than done, but it is still possible. It is not a release of anything you've encountered, but it needs you to abandon your right to hold another person accountable for the wrong done to you.
The option of forgiving your father is not stating that your hurt does not matter. You may feel that forgiveness would permit Him to get away with what he has done to you. This may be mainly true if he hasn't apologized.

Tarik Chatman, the man behind the book, was raised in the city of Detroit. Tarik was given an up-close look into life’s sometimes chaotic and harsh realities. He has attained various awards and accolades in multiple genres of expression. However, none of them are important, in his opinion, after finding himself entangled in some of those very similar realities. So he began to push his pen from behind the locked cell block door, 821 miles away from home. After supplying more relatable reading material to his fellow inmate population in middle Georgia, he decided to take things a step further upon his release. The book in your possession now is the offspring of discipline and determination, concluding that his words could bring value and inspiration. He recognized a very detailed style of writing mingled with a sometimes severe yet humorous flow of entertaining concepts.

SPAAT provides support programs to assist student-athletes in successfully transitioning to college and various careers.
Today's young adults encounter more difficulties than previous generations, often with less direction and support than their parents. As stated on SPAAT's website, the average student-to-counselor ratio in California is 1:760. In addition, education budget cuts, overcrowded schools, and an overall lack of awareness of just how difficult the transition from high school to adulthood is in today's world are leaving many students behind when they graduate. This is especially challenging for student-athletes who may solely focus on playing sports in college but need additional support due to their athletic commitments.
SPAAT is an Oakland-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to transform the youth's lives and create a positive shift in their community. Their programs create an ongoing college culture, helping their students receive millions of dollars in academic and athletic scholarships.

Deveney Perry is the Executive Director at BLDG Memphis (Build Live Develop Grow) - advancing equitable economic development strategies that support neighborhoods.
She was formerly the Director of Advocacy and first joined the team as the Resilient Communities project manager for Memphis efforts under the national Strong Prosperous and Resilient Communities Challenge (SPARCC) led by Enterprise Community Partners and Low Income Investment Fund.
Currently, she supports the organization's mission to provide policy support, capacity building, and community engagement to community development corporations, stakeholders, and initiatives around equitable investment into Memphis neighborhoods.
Ms. Perry has worked with the City of Memphis, where her policy research was instrumental in restructuring the City's business development services. In addition, she has worked to advance entrepreneurship and business development in Memphis by developing entrepreneurial programs for working communities, reentry services, and high school students.
Deveney serves on the Neighborhood Preservation Inc. advisory board. In addition, the Shelby County Mayor's Young Professionals Council has been honored by Memphis Flyer for Top 20 Under 30 and ambassadors for the Memphis Riverfront Park Partnership.
Deveney received her Bachelor of Arts in political science from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA.
