Welcome to For The Health Of It Podcast. A Healthcare Australia podcast, made for Healthcare professionals by a nurse on the inside. Your host today is Jess Tully, the HCA Brand Ambassador, and she had the pleasure of interviewing Brett Connellan, a survivor of a Shark attack back in 2016.
Brett chats to Jess about that horrific day, where he faced his worst nightmare as a surfer, and had to fight for his life. The chain of events that happened during that day, with a dash of luck, is how Brett is here to tell his story today. His medical journey post attack is extraordinary and after losing ¾ of his thigh, he has had a successful latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction to his missing thigh with skin grafts, and now is walking, running marathons, and even surfing again.
“It’s not about what happens to you. What truly matters is how you respond. That is where pride lives” – Brett Connellan Interested in joining #teampurple? Click this link to apply anddon’t forget to add your updatedCV https://bit.ly/3NEYY8C

Welcome to For The Health Of It Podcast. A Healthcare Australia podcast, made for Healthcare professionals by a nurse on the inside. Your host today is Jess Tully, the HCA Brand Ambassador, and today’s episode is going to hit you in all the feels (the emotional feels that is)!
Jess interview Lynette Maguire, the CEO and founder of a national charity called “My Wedding Wish”. Lynette wears many ‘hats’ and is not only working in the mental health space, studying her PhD, but also is a celebrant. She helped a family who had a 24-year-old terminal son whose dying wish was to marry the love of his life. Lynette organised a photographer, florist, arranged suits/wedding dress, and got the approval to do a marriage (normally it’s a 4 week wait). Only 2 days later, that man passed away! But he got to pass away as a ‘husband’ which was his wish!
This started the whole “My Wedding Wish” charity, and now Lynette has connections Australia wide and now branching out to New Zealand. Lynette has a HUGE heart, and this is the job where she wears her ‘sparkly hat’. I love Lynette's passion, and I know you will too! Let’s spread the word about this incredible charity.

One of those emotions is anxiety!!!
Sam speaks about using anxiety as a positive and gives tips, tricks and strategies to put into place to better deal with this wave of emotions you will deal with when doing locum/agency style work.

Welcome to For The Health Of It Podcast. A Healthcare Australia podcast, made for Healthcare professionals by a nurse on the inside. Your host today is Jess Tully, the HCA Brand Ambassador, and she had the honour of interviewing Simone, who is one of our dedicated Dieticians.
Simone dived into the world of dietetics and her role within HCA - working specifically in Aged Care where malnutrition and hydration are her most prevalent areas of focus. We used this episode to deep dive on ourselves, as healthcare workers, to learn tips and tricks to better care for ourselves.
Healthcare workers are known to take care of everyone else’s needs ahead of their own, and a lot suffer with eating the right food and hydrating during busy shifts. These tips and tricks are useful to implement into busy shift worker lives and is a reminder to take care of ourselves as well. The saying goes, that "You can't pour from an empty cup, so fill your cup first to help better care for others".

Welcome to For The Health Of It Podcast. A Healthcare Australia podcast, made for Healthcare professionals by a nurse on the inside. Your host today is Jess Tully, the HCA Brand Ambassador, and she has done 6 contracts herself over the years (totalling 1 year 3 months), in Griffith NSW as a rural remote nurse in theatre as well as Emergency. This is one of her favourite locations due to the community itself being incredible, the people being so warm and welcoming, the hospital, for helping her grow professionally and learn so much and her love of wine and food (which is in abundance here).
This is a great ‘first’ contract location to dive into the rural remote world if you’re a newbie or even a great spot for the ones that have been doing R&R for years.

Welcome to For The Health Of It Podcast. A Healthcare Australia podcast, made for Healthcare professionals by a nurse on the inside. Your host today is Jess Tully, the HCA Brand Ambassador, and she had the privilege to interview Dr Ben Bravery and not only dive into the story of his book ‘The Patient Doctor' but into his personal story of his stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis.
From a life in Beijing with a degree in zoology, to a stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis at the age of 28, its safe to say Ben’s life dramatically changed. His book, The Patient Doctor, talks about his own journey and experience as a ‘patient’ in the medical world and chats about the good, the bad and the ugly.
We dive into the gaps of healthcare, and the major gap is ‘communication’. That basic human to human interaction, empathy and treating patients as a ‘human being’. It seems basic, but its lacking in a dramatic way.
We also cover the nursing side of Ben’s medical journey and gave us some amazing intel on what nurses did to help (and not help) with his recovery. Ben ended up going to university and studying to be a doctor himself to make a change and this is only the beginning for him. His book is being rolled out to student doctors to help develop the understand that communication is ‘key’; in the medical world.
Its not going to change overnight, but this is a huge step in the right direction and for that, THANK YOU BEN! Thank you for starting that movement!

Today we are interviewing doctor, author and avid traveller, Dr Sonia Henry. Sonia is a travelling GP, splitting her time between Australia and Europe with her spare time spent writing and releasing her first novel, “Going Under”, with a 2ndbook to come next year. Going Under follows the life of an intern that faces some very confronting and relatable challenges within the Australian healthcare system. It is a must read for those in healthcare and a much-needed eye opener for those outside the healthcare field. Today we discuss the life of a travelling GP and how Dr Sonia’s passion for indigenous and rural health has grown and molded over time. We dive deep into the mental health challenges within the healthcare system, particularly for doctors, as well as the importance of opening your mind and broadening your perspective of Australia and all the beauty it holds. Sonia is funny, charismatic and oozes passion for life.
We hope you enjoy this one!

This week we introduce Ruth. Ruth is a physio, is in her late 20s and is positive for the BRCA1 mutation. Ruth found out she had this mutation at 19 after finding out her father carried the gene mutation. Having a mutation on the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene increases the risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer significantly. 13% of all genetically female individuals will develop breast cancer during their lives… having the harmful BRCA1 gene variant increases that to 55-72%.
For Ruth, her future may look a little different, having to prioritise her health more than other people her age. This looks like extra screening, more awareness for changes in her body, a double mastectomy in the next few years and the potential for more surgeries down the track.
This episode is emotional, raw, and real and Ruth’s vulnerability and candour are inspiring. We hope you enjoy this episode.
Education and awareness are the best prevention. Set a reminder in your phone on the 1st of every month to check your breasts. You are never too young or too old to get breast cancer, and discovering lumps early reduces your risk of cancer developing or progressing. Prioritise yourself and your health so we can eliminate breast cancer for good!
