How do you run a business that helps people log off and live more?

One thing is certain, you can’t be on your phone from am to pm and work insane hours. That makes no sense. You can’t tell people to do one thing and do the exact opposite yourself.

This podcast chronicles my real-time experiment in business and takes you behind the scenes of building a business that promotes chill and logging off on the outside as much as on the inside.

Follow along to find out if I make it without marketing myself on social media, working outside in nature, and with little structure and a lot of room for flow.

Are you in for a bold idea for your marketing? Cool! Here it is: If social media isn't cutting it for you, why don't you build your own socials platform? Yup! Before you say it's le impossible! It is. From a tech point of view, it's totally possible - and at an accessible cost. But more so: why? People like the functionality of social media, they don't like the present execution. This is a great idea if you want to create more than just community around your product, your brand, yourself, or your service. It's to give your people a totally new way to connect that goes way, way beyond a community platform.

Also: How baller of a move is this? If you don't like what Instagram or Facebook are doing, just build your own themed social network around your brand. Imagine how awesome it is for people in your community to connect this way around a shared interest. It goes way deeper than a community software or subreddit ever could. It harnesses the good part of socials: Getting to show off your own personality, being seen by other people.

And you can keep the trolls out and monetize it gently (if you want to) with a small monthly contribution. Or not. Honestly, I'm waiting to see the first influencer or pop culture figure to do this. Imagine Swiftnet for Swifties. But it also works for smaller brands and followings.

Now, here's a caveat: This is best for somebody who has a sizable(ish) following they want to move onto their own social media platform. You need a critical mass of people who's active enough so that the network is actually interesting.

I also talk about:

  • community software vs. your own social media network
  • how the internet is becoming more private
  • my prediction for the future of marketing and the internet
  • how to tell if a project is for you

Ah, the wonderful world of personal development online: Do this! Not that! Use this method, not that one! There are so many recipes - but which ones work? And for you?In this episode, I share why recipes aren't the way to go and what signals to look for to find good people for personal development work. One approach is like teaching people how to make pasta, the other one shows them how to cook. For long-term impact and to grow as a person in a sustainable way, the way that is like learning how to cook is infinitely better. And after this episode you'll know much better how to find which is which and who to choose in which moment of your journey.

I also share how you can navigate the often confusing, sometimes messy world of advice-giving online. There's a lot of content out there right now that tells you how to live life. You don't need to follow each and every one of it. Listen to learn how to find what fits and what to let go.

How do you create content in your business? Is it a chore? Sort of okay? You like doing it but often are lacking inspiration? In this episode, I share a reframe for your content marketing: Instead of seeing it as a necessary evil in getting word out there about your business, what if you saw it as a gift?

Because it is: Content marketing is a strategic element of bringing people to your business. But it's so much more than that. Your content is a point of connection with your audience. It's also often the first thing they see from you. So better make it good.

Listen to learn more how reframing your content as a gift can making content more fun for you and way more impactful for your community.

Hand on your heart: How good are you at listening? REALLY listening?

I always thought I was a decent listener until I trained as a coach. Only then did I understand that I had a lot to learn in that department - and still do. Listening is a disappearing art - especially in a time where we seem to love to shout at each other online.

Truly listening is a beautiful gift you can give to the person who's sharing something with you. Think about it: When is the last time you felt that somebody truly listened to you? When did you make space for somebody else to share what's on their mind?

It's trickier than it seems. Especially, when what they're sharing might feel uncomfortable to us. It's easier to jump in and try and fix things than letting somebody else share what's on their mind and hear it without immediately interrupting them with a fix. But that's exactly where the magic happens. When you give somebody space to open up authentically and feel safe to be vulnerable with you. Becoming a better listener will enrich your relationships so, so much. And it will make you feel more secure in those situations where somebody is sharing stuff that's uncomfy.

Listen in to learn 3 easy things you can do to become a better listener in this episode. I'm spilling my secrets from training as a coach, so it's a good one!

So, you hate marketing yourself on social media! This episode is for you.

We need to talk about this. Despite my gentle nature, I won't sugarcoat things for you in this episode. What we need to talk about is adult human beings who are capable of running businesses who keep telling themselves the same sucky story over and over again. Socials suck. Posting drains me. I don't want to do this but I have to.

You don't have to be on socials if you don't want to. You don't have to create a course if you don't want to. You don't have to do anything in any set way, if it doesn't resonate. You're an adult human being who's running a business. You get to decide how you do things. Not some online guru, not your well-meaning friends who told you "just make a facebook page and they will come", not your neighbor. Whoever it is, it doesn't mean you have to do it.

After all, how is your special magic sauce supposed to shine through, when you despise how you talk about what you do? It makes no sense to expect great outcomes and hate the way you're getting there.

This episode will help you break through the mental barrier of "but how" or "what if I stuff up my business when I leave socials?". Because the no. 1 thing that's in your way to leave the misery of socials isn't which platform you'll go on instead. It's your mind.

So let's address that. Listen for inspiration!

So, do you have to text back to every text you receive? How many unread texts do you have? 10? 54? 135? More? Phew! How does that feel? A bit stressful, right? It's like there's this unspoken pressure of other peoples' expectations in your phone, waiting for you. And you're always behind.

In the podcast episode I discuss, whether you really, really need to answer all texts you're getting. Because let's face it, we're human, we've got lives, things do, etc. We can't always be everything to everyone. It's kiiiiind of inevitable that you'll end up disappointing people. To make this process as smooth as possible, it comes down to managing people's expectations about what they can get from you when.

Social Media is tricky for business owners - and in life. It can be a huge time sink and wreak havoc on our mental health. I help business owners market their work without social media (a story for another day).

In this episode, I'm sharing the story of a YouTuber who charms his audience without even showing his face! The name of the channel is Solo Solo Travel. You can find it here.

Episode Content:

  • Bye, Social Media, a business I run for marketing without social media
  • My concerns around sharing everything about your life on social media for business
  • A way to be on socials for people who like to keep things more private

Three lessons from Solo Solo Travel for your marketing:

  • Know your niche: the content works because it's so informative for travel
  • It's possible to show your personality without showing the details of your life. There are so many ways to be creative with that.
  • You can create content out of a passion for it without the pressure of monetization.

Have you ever heard that you can only do one thing as an entrepreneur? Focus, niche down, keep at it for several years, and in the end you will reap the rewards? Well...that's one way to go about it.

Doing things like that never resonated with me. I've always been multi-passionate. I have an idea a minute and many of them are good.

Last year, during a session with my executive coach, I lamented to her that there was never enough time and money and energy for all the things I wanted to do. I let out a heavy sigh and told her: "I just wish I had an idea factory." I wanted that to be able to make all the awesome things come alive that live in my head - together with people who are dedicated to and really excited about what they're doing. Win-win-win for everyone.

Only that...I didn't really see a path to that. I had to build my own. To get some sort of idea how to achieve this, I looked not to business but to the arts and creative fields.

It turned out that viewing my work like a director, an artist, or head designer was much closer to what I had in mind than being a "plain" CEO.

Your phone habits can make or break you as an entrepreneur and human. Our phones are powerful tools and they come with hefty downsides. It's time to take control of them for our mental health AND our ability to get things done.

Topics discussed in the episode:

  • Storytime: how my phone habits got in my way as a startup founder
  • When I had burnt out as a founder, I quit my phone for a summer (actually, I chucked it into a corner in the house and never wanted to look at it again) - and only then I noticed how big of an impact my phone had on my mental health
  • Changing your phone habits is something you have to experience to see the value of it, then you'll REALLY notice the effect of it.
  • I share 3 instant tips for more calm around your phone in this episode. They're easy to do and super impactful.

  • My favorite place to work outside
  • Why I work outside, aka staring at a screen for 12 hours a day shouldn't be the norm.

Talk is not cheap when you're the bottleneck in your businessHow do you manage your communication? Have you ever considered whether your communication structure is scalable? If that's new for you - fab, you'll love this episode.

Ideas discussed in the episode:

  • Scalability in communication is awesome
  • How I use different email addresses to prepare my business for scaling and outsourcing from the beginning
  • Super principle in my business: my personal inbox is sacrosanct and only the essential gets to go there
  • Avoid being the communications bottleneck: A system that requires you to forward emails to onboard a new team member is a recipe for disaster
  • Using different email addresses and filtering your communication streams allows you to choose which communication stream you set up on which device

Inboxes/email addresses I created for myself = how I split my communication streams

  • general catchall address
  • newsletters inbox
  • operations: backend of software and services
  • finance: payment processing and payouts
  • invoices: external stakeholder and services invoices
  • coaching community: an address that only people in my coaching community (= paid coaching service) can access

More hacks:

-> essential addresses live on my phone AND laptop, admin-related is on my laptop only because I only check them so often

-> once I hand over a task, I hand over the email account entirely, no forwarding/researching a collection of individual emails in my general inbox = saves you time

Do you want passive income? Sounds like a dream, right? The business does the work, you do the chilling out! Let's look at that. I believe for most people the promise of autonomy over your time, working less, and feeling like you have a reliable source of income and financial security are what draws them to want to build a passive income. But that really only happens when you invest. A passive income business still requires some set-up work and quite a bit of thinking beforehand.

I prefer to call it a low-touch business. Listen to learn what it is and how you can build one.

Ideas discussed in the episode:

  • Passive income vs. a low-touch business
  • My key takeaways from the 4-Hour Work Week = the OG Low-Touch Business Bible
  • Mindset shifts from 1:1 work to building a Low-Touch Business
  • Get clear on the three layers of tasks in your business: necessary operations, product features, and client service, optional for delivering a better service, visionary for anything that would be awesome to have in the future but plays no key role for the delivery of your service

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Why do you want to have a low-touch business?
  • Where do your preferences lie? Do you need to tweak your current preferences for more well-being as an entrepreneur or does a Low-Touch Business really speak to you? Like your mom would say, just because everyone else is doing something, doesn't mean you have to ;)
  • How much time are you able to and want to work in a week realistically?
  • Which tasks do you have in your business that are necessary, optional, and visionary (see above for the categories)? Get clear on them.
  • Bonus questions: Which tasks are time-sinks with not enough return? Ex: For me, right now, that's social media marketing.

What does scaling mean to you? Of course, it refers to your business' ability to grow - and grow easily and without your business' structures get in the way. At the same time, you can - and should - think about it in terms of scaling your offering's ability to serve as many people as possible. It's about the impact and the money.

Ideas discussed in the episode:

  • The conventional way to think about scalability (πŸ€‘πŸ€‘πŸ€‘, infinite frictionless growth)
  • A reframe of scalability: How many people can you serve with your service or product without your business structures getting in the way?
  • What to think about when wanting to build a scalable business - it doesn't have to be for everyone
  • Clarity about your intention beforehand (scalable vs. 1:1 business) is key
  • You want to set up your business in a way that a sudden surge of interest doesn't break the business. You want to be set up so you can serve people, when that happens.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Have you ever considered creating a scalable product for your business?
  • What product do you have that you could tweak so it can become scalable? What idea do you have that could lead to something scalable?
  • Look at the processes in your business: Where might you refine things so they can become scalable? For example: You want to look at a process here that for example relies on manual tasks that become very messy if your client list all of a sudden 10x-ed?

Finding the right software setup for your business can be...a rollercoaster ride. If you're the type of person who reads all the reviews and comparisons online and is none the wiser after half a day of research, this is for you. I'm sharing my experience with a recent software hiccup and the questions you can ask yourself beforehand to avoid an excessive adjustments.

Ideas discussed in the episode:

  • Getting clear on the experience you want your customers to have AND your business needs is key for making an informed choice for software
  • Also: Getting clear on the software requirements for your service is also key in making this process frictionless
  • Pro-tip for customer service chats: "talk to human" sometimes works and puts you through to a person
  • New knowledge = might require re-adjustments in your business (as annoying as it is)
  • When scalability of your business relies on a person and their attention span and work hours that creates a lot friction in your business
  • Being intentional with your spend is key when looking for software

Not all content is created alike! Just because everyone else is on the Gram, who says you have to? I discuss how I create content in a way that plays to my strengths. This is not just about saying bye, Facebook - it's about sharing ideas with your audience in the way that works best for you to bring your message into the world. Because, newsflash, content that you create while hating the process of creating it likely won't charm your audience ;) Being in your sparkly zone of genius will, though.

Ideas discussed in the episode:

  • Playing to your strengths as an entrepreneur: I'm moving to audio content for my blog and products
  • Shaping content creation to serve your strengths is important to manage your time and energy well as a biz owner
  • How creating an audio blog and moving to audio in my content creation process was a game-changer

This episode is about what I wish somebody had told me about business in the beginning. The very beginning. More than anything, business is a radical course in personal development and hardly anyone talks about that. The magic and unique challenge in running a business is that any little thing you're trying to hide from yourself will eventually come to the forefront. And if you don't address them, will blow up in your face.

This is an episode about this secret. And about why I think it's holding us back when we talk about challenges in business within the glossy framework of success stories only. If you're here, you can expect more realness for mutual learning.

How to run your business with very minimal structure: I'm sharing my insights on what works well and what to watch out for.

Ideas discussed in the episode:

  • In my experience, this approach works well when you're very focused when it comes to product and marketing
  • Looking at your work like cascades of focus that follow one another: batch by batch to harness creative energy most
  • The risks and caveats in taking this approach
  • Accountability and self-awareness are key

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Are you clear on the products that you're offering? Do you feel courageous when it comes to niching down on products?
  • Is there anything that I shared that you want to try out in your business?

Do you actually need structure in your life to run a business successfully? Yes - and no.

I run my business with very minimal structure and a lot of room for flow and creative energy. There are pros and cons to this and I discuss them in this episode. Because paradise is a wide-open calendar for me.

Ideas in this episode:

  • Playing to your strengths as an entrepreneur - whether you need room for flow or structure to do what you need to do
  • What doing things when you feel like them means. Spoiler: not like a child not feeling like doing homework
  • Limitations to a low-structure approach to running a business

Questions I ask in the episode:

  • How does it feel when I talk about a day that's in flow for yourself? Do you feel relief? Stress? Confusion?
  • Where does the idea come from that you need to have structure in your life? Your upbringing, social media, or is it something you genuinely want for yourself?
  • What would it look like to give yourself permission to be more in the flow? Can you experiment with giving yourself a flow-day to try this out?

How can you play to your strengths in how you set up your business' structure?

Storytime: From freelancing to consulting to building a startup and failing at a coaching business - I learnt one thing in that journey: you can't sustainably create a business following somebody else's formula. How do you do it in your own way, then? I'm sharing my own experiences about this and ideas how you can look at this process in your own entrepreneurial journey.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What do you consider success in your own way?
  • What are non-negotiable values that your work needs to honor?
  • Is my assumption about how I need to do things to make it correct or did I buy into an ideal that's not my own?

🎢 Let's go outside, let's go outside, in the sunshine 🎢

Reporting live from the jungle in the Bavarian alps with my co-stars, the Birdz.

Ideas discussed in the episode:

  • I like to work outside. A lot.
  • Learn why I do this and how you can make the most of a work session in nature. Because who says work can only happen at a desk?

Welcome to the show! I'm Johanna a Digital Wellness Consultant and speaker and repeat-founder.

On the show, I'm sharing the behind the scenes process of creating a business in my very own way. I help people build conscious, intentional relationships with the tech in their lives. Everything I share is aimed at helping people lead more calm, healthy lives that are sparkly with well-being and I want to bring the same intention to how I create and build this business. It's all about walking the walk. And I want to. After burning out in business twice, I realized that this time around I needed to find a better way to do things. And that means charting my own path and leaving behind other people's blueprints. Instead, I'm running my own business like the rebel and visionary that I am.

Following along to see how I'm doing it and get inspired to step outside the "how to-s". It's time to step away from the guru-formulas and trust yourself in the process. It's your life.
