This episode is brought to you by Dr. Colin Zhu of the Thrive Bites podcast.
In this episode of Thrive Bites as the first episode of 2021, I chat with Dr. Uma Naidoo who is a Harvard-trained nutritional psychiatrist about the connection between the gut and the brain and how we can change our gut and brain health by simply changing what we put into our mouths! Take a listen to this fantastic episode!
Michelin-starred chef David Bouley described Dr. Uma Naidoo as the world’s first “triple threat” in the food as medicine space: She is a Harvard trained psychiatrist, Professional Chef, and Nutrition Specialist. Her niche work is in Nutritional Psychiatry and she is regarded both nationally and internationally as a medical pioneer in this more newly recognized field.
Featured in the Wall Street Journal, ABC News, Harvard Health Press, Goop, Healthline, Martha Stewart, and many others, Dr. Uma has a special interest in the impact of food on mood and other mental health conditions.
In her role as a Clinical Scientist, Dr. Naidoo founded and directs the first hospital-based clinical service in Nutritional Psychiatry in the USA. She is the Director of Nutritional and Lifestyle Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) & Director of Nutritional Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital Academy while serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Naidoo graduated from the Harvard-Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program in Boston during which she received several awards, some of which included a “Junior Investigator Award” (American Psychiatric Association); “Leadership Development for Physicians and Scientists” award (Harvard), as well as being the very first psychiatrist to be awarded the coveted “Curtis Prout Scholar in Medical Education”. Dr. Naidoo, has been asked by The American Psychiatric Association to author the first academic text in Nutritional Psychiatry.
In addition to this, Dr. Naidoo is the author of the upcoming title, This Is Your Brain On Food to be released August 4th, 2020. In her book, she shows the cutting-edge science explaining the ways in which food contributes to our mental health and how a sound diet can help treat and prevent a wide range of psychological and cognitive health issues, from ADHD to anxiety, depression, OCD, and others.

This episode is brought to you by Dr. Sebastian Gonzales of the Restoring Human Movement podcast.
Billions of people suffer from lower back pain throughout the world, many of which have annual flare-ups.
Common treatments include surgery, injections, oral opioids, and massage.
Sadly, some studies estimate that only 3% of people dealing with lower back pain ever attempt a structured rehabilitation program, which yields some of the highest success of all treatments.
In this podcast, we cover common beliefs associated with lower back pain, how to get out of pain, and how to create a wellness program to keep you feeling great for years.

This episode is brought to you by Brock Armstrong of the Get-Fit Guy podcast.
Have you ever felt that you were simply too busy to make the changes you’d like to make in your life? In this episode, we challenge some of those stories we have about how busy we are and how much time change requires. We’ll also offer advice on how you can fit the work of change in around other obligations and priorities.
Key Takeaways:
• Being too busy is often an excuse that we use when there’s some other reason we’re avoiding taking action, like doubt, avoiding the discomfort of the unfamiliar, or fear of failing or making a mistake. • A lot of us aren’t nearly as busy as we think we are--and the other side of that optical illusion is thinking that something will take much longer than it actually will. • Or, we are making ourselves busy with thing that we don’t really value. • By being more intentional about how we use our time, we can make room for the things that are most meaningful, including making the changes that we want to make.
Lab Experiment:
In her book Time Smart: How to Reclaim Your Time and Live a Happier Life, Ashley Whillans recommends cultivating time affluence by evaluating areas of improvement.
Think about a typical day you had. • What are moments that brought you joy and what were moments that brought you stress? • Of all those activities that aren't bringing meaning or pleasure, and that are unproductive and stressful, think about one very specific activity that you're going to try to do less of going forward. (Whillans used the example of "doom-scrolling" — spending time mindlessly browsing social media — as a habit that many may want to change.) • Once you have identified a habit that doesn't serve you well, write down a strategy for avoiding the activity, and then put the written reminder in a visible spot. This is where you can reclaim some time and use it for change.

This episode is brought to you by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne of the The Whole View podcast.
In this episode, Stacy and Dr. Sarah discuss how incredibly common nutrient deficiencies are, even if you think you’re eating a healthy diet, plus what nutrient-dense foods we can eat to restore healthy nutrient levels in the body, and what framing the whole diet as nutrivore means.
Welcome to The Whole View. We’re excited to have new listeners! So, for anyone new to the show, let’s briefly introduce ourselves.
Stacy - 20 year career in Federal regulation and law, my life changed in discovering what we put in and on our bodies affects our health. Now my own boss, leading a large team focused on getting safer non-toxic living products into the hands of everyone.
Dr. Sarah - medical research background, PhD in medical biophysics, used diet and lifestyle to regain my health, and now see myself in many ways as a science translator, a bridge between the researchers working to expand human knowledge and the people who can benefit from the actionable information
A lot of our shows lately have done some very deep dives into the science on specific foods or even specific forms of specific nutrients! So, we thought it would be a good idea to take a step back and look at the big picture, and talk about why nutrients are so important from a whole health perspective.
Basically, we’ve been throwing this word “nutrivore” around a lot lately, so we want to dedicate a whole show to talking about what it means to be a nutrivore and why it’s the most important property of a healthy diet..
We hope this show will be a good “centering” or “grounding” show for our regular listeners, but this is a fantastic episode to share with family and friends who will be or have been inundated with "diet" jargon.
We use science to guide recommended health principals, and the vast majority of scientific studies tell us that focusing on a nutrient-rich fuel source (as well as other lifestyle factors) are the things that support health.

This episode is brought to you by Jenna Free of the How to Love Your Body podcast.
Intuitive Eating, UnDieting and Health At Every Size are concepts and ways of living that go against diet culture. The world we live in that’s obsessed with weight loss, thinness and so called “health”.
It can be misunderstood and seen as extreme because it does go against a lot of what we’re used to.
What do you mean don’t diet? Eat what I want? Don’t restrict? Accept my body? Stop pursuing weight loss?
These are all things our society values in a profoundly dysfunctional way but when we’re in it we don’t see it that way - we see willpower and discipline and health and being good!
So why is it dysfunctional? We are told that weight = health but when you look at the research this is not true. But then why does my doctor always tell me to lose weight? - We live in a culture strife with false beliefs about weight and these are held onto in medical school, and passed down from one generation to the next. We did an interview with a medical student and she said there are new classes being introduced to provide more nuance about weight and health but there are still many professors (older doctors) who use words like COUCH POTATO in their medical lectures - yes, couch potato. She said many doctors were perplexed about why their patients don’t just lose weight? The data does not overtake the fear and bias we have around weight as a culture.
Pursuing weight loss is unnecessary but it also DOES NOT WORK! Not only are we taught that losing weight is good for our health, we’re also taught that it’s possible - all you need is a meal plan and some willpower and POOF you’re thin and live happily ever after. The truth is pursuing weight loss leaves you with a 2-5% chance of losing weight and keeping it off (with likely intensive effort while missing out on a lot of life and negatively affecting your mental health) and a 66% chance of ending up heavier than you started.
But without this knowledge we think these diets should work and WE are to blame for their failure. It’s the only product where it doesn't work, in fact usually backfires and the customer blames themselves.
We are not taught that our bodies are brilliant and we can just listen to them and that will result in positive health outcomes. We are told to not trust our bodies, that we can't be trusted around food and that our bodies will be unhealthy if we don't suppress our weight. Leading us AWAY from the innate knowledge that our bodies hold if we were to just trust our bodies.
J - So what does it look like to not pursue weight loss and trust our bodies?
At first: Yes, coming from dieting, food restriction and body hate, this doesn’t happen overnight. We can’t go straight from dieting to balance, it doesn’t work that way although we’d all love it if it did. Many people do not take on the work of intuitive eating, UnDieting and body acceptance because it is HARD At the beginning and it doesn’t happen instantly but it’s so worth it.
At first many people will experience higher levels of hunger, it might feel like all that you want is the things you didn't allow yourself when you were dieting. And this is what people are afraid they’ll do forever but it’s just a phase. Your body needs to be re-fed! Yes, even if you are not thin, even if you feel like you need to lose weight, if you’ve been restricting, your body is hungry and it will do what it needs to do in order to correct itself.
But then comes a time when food becomes less interesting and the goal is that food just becomes food. It’s an enjoyable part of your life but just a small part of your life - not everything.
Another part of this work is changing the way you think - in fact it's the most important element. If you still think you really SHOULDN'T be eating that and you’re just trying to do this work to try to sneakily lose weight.
But this journey results in what we call wellness without the obsession. Moving your body in ways you enjoy.
Eating a wide variety of food that makes you feel good while also being able to go to a restaurant, order what you want, enjoy it and move on.
Eat dessert without guilt, pass on dessert when you don’t feel like it.
Feel at peace in your body regardless of how it looks.
Be present in your life and feel good mentally.
This is what this work does for us.
And we are so passionate about sharing it with others.
In order to get started we invite you to tune into our other podcast episodes, download our free workbook at bit.ly/wwworkbook and register to join us for a private online screening of our documentary called Behind the Before and After coming out early 2021 bit.ly/btbagiveaway

This episode is brought to you by Stacy Toth of the The Whole View podcast.
In this episode, Stacy and Dr. Sarah discuss how we can comprehensively measure our health versus the negative self-talk that derives from brands and influencers marketing quick-fixes, detoxes and beauty products.
A lot of our shows lately have done some very deep dives into the science on topics like foods, lifestyle factors, hormones and specific nutrients! Today we want to pull all that together and discuss the basic philosophy of health and how we define and measure the actual goal.

This episode is brought to you by Lauren Vaknine of the Reconditioned podcast.
I was honoured to be joined in this season 3 finale special, by my friend, spiritual guide and motivational speaker, Jay Shetty. Jay and I met through our spiritual connections many years ago and in that time he has not only been a friend, but also a mentor of sorts, like he is for so many others. The lessons I have learnt from him (and his equally insightful wife Radhi) have been humbling and life-defining. So many people know Jay’s work and have listened to him speaking about his life as a monk, about his lifestyle and beliefs and about the work he does. So in order to make this episode as unique and expansive as possible, I set the intention to really get to know Jay as the person – not the speaker / author / teacher – by delving into some of the subjects he rarely speaks about in interviews. The result was a rare candid discussion filled with honesty, personal insights, laughter and of course wisdom, in a way that you’ve never heard Jay before. You can find Jay on Instagram @jayshetty You can also head over to www.jayshetty.me and https://jayshettycoaching.com/ as well as his Jay Shetty Genius membership program https://jayshettygenius.com/ You can also listen to On Purpose here. If you enjoyed this episode, please consider sharing it with friends, and please also make sure to subscribe / follow and review! It really helps us to reach more people. And if you would like to help me keep it going for as long as possible, please consider offering a small contribution to my Go Fund Me page.
As mentioned in the intro, if you’re interested in Lauren Vaknine Coaching, please add your name to the waiting list at www.laurenvakninecoaching.com. Reconditioned with Lauren Vaknine supports Solace Women’s Aid Charity, who support survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence, working with over 27,000 people each year to build safe lives and strong futures. Reconditioned also supports El Shaddai Charitable Trust , who provide homes and futures for orphans in Goa, India, and support families living in extreme poverty.

Ayurveda:
The sister science to Yoga and Jyotish (Vedic Astrology).
Ayurveda means the science of life or science of living. We recognize that humans are a part of nature rather than separate from it. This is different from modern science and medicine. We look at each person as unique and consider that uniqueness at any point in time. Also considering that we are dynamic and evolving beings.
Gurvadi Gunas:
20 qualities, 10 pairs of opposites present in nature. Things like hot and cold, heavy and light, cloudy and clear and so on. Lean more about the gurvadi gunas on in our 2020 podcast series:

Panchamahabhutas:
The five elements of earth, water, fire, air and the ethers.
Doshas:
The doshas describe how the five elements function in us which then affects how we experience our body, mind, and spiritual connection. They are grouped into air and ethers (vata) water and fire (pitta) and eath and water (kapha).

This episode is brought to you by Chel Hamilton of the Meditation Minis podcast.
Overcome the negative thoughts, self doubts, anxiety, and worries that keep you from achieving (and being) everything you dream to be with this short guided meditation from the host of the Meditation Minis Podcast.
Hi, I'm Chel Hamilton of the Meditation Minis Podcast and I want to speak to you for a few minutes on high achievers and anxiety. I think most if not all high achievers either have, or have struggled with, anxiety - because when you're up to big things in the world, you have lots of things that you're managing, right?
Did you know studies have actually shown people with anxiety are more intelligent? So there is some benefit to our anxiety... It's like problem solving on hyper-drive all of the time. And that can be a beautiful thing, but we also get to learn how to get quiet and still. I know as a meditation podcast host, a lot of people have this idea that they can't meditate because their brains are too busy thinking things and they can't, you know, "Quiet their mind."
So what I would like to lead you through today is a process in which we use our subconscious mind’s ability to imagine and feel, and for some of us even make pictures in our mind. If you're not super visual, don't worry, this will still work for you. We're going to harness that subconscious part of our mind to create more space to allow more silence and stillness in our mind without struggling with it, without fighting it.
Just try it and see how you feel at the end. You can do this with your eyes closed for a more inward experience, or if you feel more comfortable just staring at a spot on the wall or near the floor, that can work to as long as you just kind of zone out with that staring.

From Kansas we will see how simple habit changes takes you through the next steps and to your final destination: Immunity.

This episode is brought to you by Andrea Samadi of the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast.
Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, with a special episode, recorded for Podbean’s Wellness Week.
What Everyone Must Know About the Top Mental Health Staples to Accelerate Productivity and Results.
My name is Andrea Samadi, and if you are new here, I’m a former educator who created this podcast to bring the most current neuroscience research, along with high performing experts who have risen to the top of their field, with specific strategies or ideas that you can implement immediately, whether you are an educator, or working in the corporate space, to take your results to the next level.
When I first launched this podcast, in June 2019, using Podbean as my host, of course, it was a bit by chance, as I had just purchased a new template for my website that had a podcast theme, and the developer who helped me to build the site said “you can delete the podcast section if you don’t want to host a podcast” and I thought about it for a minute, and was already conducting interviews for the programs and services I was offering in my membership area, so I told him, “let’s just keep it” and I went over to Google and searched for “what is an RSS feed” and “how to launch a podcast.” I had no idea at that moment just how powerful that one decision would be, leading me to launch something that would connect me to leaders around the world, be downloaded in over 100 countries, become my biggest learning opportunity I’ve ever had, and open up many doors, all from just one decision.
I also started this podcast because I saw a serious need in the area of social and emotional learning that was being implemented in schools around the country and the world, but many educators didn’t know the best way to begin their implementation. We all know that “success in life, and in college and career specifically, relies on student’s cognitive, (the core skills your brain uses to think, read, remember, and pay attention) social and interpersonal skills, (including the ability to navigate through social situations, resolve conflicts, show respect towards others, self-advocate and learn how to work on a team with others) and emotional development (including the ability to recognize and manage one’s emotions, demonstrate empathy for others and cope with stress)” but what are these skills, and what exactly is the best way to implement them?
In the corporate world, these skills aren’t new, but they are “newly important” and of high urgency to develop in our future generations. A recent survey showed that 58 percent of employers say college graduates aren’t adequately prepared for today’s workforce, and those employers noted a particular gap in social and emotional skills. This is where our goal with this podcast began—to close this gap by exploring six social and emotional learning competencies as a springboard for discussion and tie in how an understanding of our brain can facilitate these strategies. Hence the title of the podcast, Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning. If we want to improve our social, emotional and cognitive abilities, it all starts with an understanding of our brain.
