Dr. Elizabeth Linsdey asked on LinkedIn recently:

If we could give advice to our younger selves, what would you say?

This was my response.

I would share the following with my younger self:

1) You’re never “the only one,” release yourself from shame.

2) Re-parent yourself when necessary

3) Sensitivity to other people's feelings is a great asset.

4) Take ownership, stop blaming.

5) Reimagine the possibilities, every single one of them!

I would love to hear what your advice would be! DM me wherever you find yourself on social media. I want to learn from you.

"When we move from a focus on leadership to a focus on the leaders themselves, we begin to see what they really need." Dr. Rob McKenna, WiLD Leadership Inc.

Dr. Rob you truly see people for who they are becoming. You make space for the necessary conversations. You teach us to edit. Happy Canada Day! Today's Day 26 of my journey in The Kindness Games and my shoutout goes to one of our favorite Canadians Dr. Mark Boda.

He carried us through our time in Hamilton, ON Canada with deep kindness and compassion. He teaches me over and over again about the value of relational connection. Thank you Mark for giving hope and help to my husband and I during times we didn't think we'd make it through.

Your leadership, care, and kindness has forever changed our lives and I know many more can say the same.

I love the following description of the book of Haggai from a volume you edited. It is a picture of what you teach, preach, and live out day after day. You share confident hope of what is coming and what is already here.

“The book’s creative reconfiguration of Israel’s earlier theological concepts enabled this community to adapt to the new and unforeseen conditions of life under foreign rule, affirming that, contrary to appearances, Yahweh’s covenant and promises were intact, and his work of renewing his community had begun. Thus, Yahweh’s people could labor in confident hope of his coming intervention for them.” - Haggai, Dictionary of the Old Testament : Prophets Authors Mark J Boda J G McConville (J. Gordon) Print Book ©2012 Downers Grove, Ill. : IVP Academic, ©2012.

It’s incredible what happens when you sit in the presence of women who have done the hard work of getting out of their own way. They have laid down their ego. They have learned how to cover and move in ways that make the magic happen. You see it in their smiles. You hear it in their stories. You live it through their actions. I learn from Jamie every time I get to join the Women’s Assembly monthly calls. It was an honor to join today and learn from these women. Echelon Front is shaping leaders in ways that will impact generation after generation.

My DAY 25 Kindness Games shoutout goes to Jamie Cochran + Jackie Hoffman and the Women’s Assembly of Echelon Front. This morning I got to join the monthly conversation.

I took the following notes from this morning's meeting titled, “Extreme Ownership is not for me with Jackie Hoffman, ” and walked away with a renewed energy for my role in this world.

NOTES:

“We own everything in our world:

Every problem

Every solution

Every relationship” - Jackie Hoffman

Cover and move is the first law of combat for a reason. It’s my ego that gets in the way of teamwork.

Ask “How can I make this my fault?”

When I take responsibility then I can step up and do something to solve the problem.

Stop playing the blame game.

EO (Extreme Ownership) is simple, not easy.

Trust - Respect - Listen - Influence

A story about bamboo, business, and friendship:

I heard Sarah Mackenzie from Read-Aloud-Revival encourage a group homeschooling moms with the analogy of a bamboo plant.

She mentioned that when a person first plants bamboo, they water it, tend to its surroundings, place it in the perfect proximity to the elements needed for growth; then they repeat this cycle for the next five years before any actual signs of growth appear. FIVE years!

This doesn’t mean that there has not been growth happening, it just means it is not visible to the human eye. The growth is happening underground; in the root system. They are digging deep, and gaining strength. They are positioning themselves for maximum effectiveness for rapid growth. Because when that time comes, bamboo can grow up to 80ft in just six weeks.

My Day 24 Kindness Games shoutout goes to Jenn Uren who continues to encourage me to position myself as an entrepreneur and mother. She teaches from experience about setting up systems that help us sustain (a solid root system). She's been supporting me since the days when being a business owner was just an idea. We came together as two strangers to lead a weekly clubhouse room and left that as friends for life. Her faith, her process, her day to day examples exude the joy of doing life together and believe in things we can’t yet see. Thank you for believing in me Jenn. Here’s to digging deep for roots that grow deep.

A Runner's Blessing

May your wind be always rhythmic.

May your heart be always strong.

May your road be always beautiful.

May it never seem too long.

May your legs be always faithful.

May your feet be never sore.

May your mind be always peaceful.

May you run forevermore.

By Daniel Mark Extrom

Today’s Day 23 of The Kindness Games shoutout goes to those who have run alongside me throughout varying seasons of life. They pushed me beyond my physical limits. They let me sync my step and breath with theirs. They were my companions and the keepers of my dreams. They taught me to develop my stride and edit according to the environment. I think of them each time I hit the road. They encourage me to take one more step forward.

There is something really special about meeting up for a run, and I am so thankful for each time I got to do so with these amazing women.

Veronica was generous with all the hard learned lessons and work she had done sewing into her kids' early education years. She could have easily kept it to herself, but she didn't. She passed it all along, and we are still reaping the fruits of her labor.

She was just a few phases ahead of me, but her wisdom was water to my thirsty soul. She encouraged me about the coming seasons that I am living out now. Veronica led me with hope through a season of motherhood I thought I'd never get through. Moms of littles, trust those women who have gone before you.

Thank you for always welcoming me into your home, for teaching me how to find a place for everything, and for loving me where I was. You led my heart with kindness, and it has forever changed me.

There's a chance that the person you are hesitant to meet could become one of your closest friends. You'll never know unless you make that first move.

Bre has become my confidant and partner in motherhood, moving, and daily life even though we live in the two states that are not actually connected to the contiguous US. We started out as neighbors, the kind you borrow milk from and have over for tea. Then we separated and had to share life through the screen, but our connection only got deeper. She lives with intention and deep faithfulness to the call God has given her and her family. I am thankful for the way our lives have been woven together. I am looking forward to what the future has in store.

Here's to stepping out, to saying yes, to being faithful, and to lasting friendship.

May today be measured in grace. May you take a deep breath and remember you are the best person for the job. May you take joy in the journey; it's hard but also good. You don’t have to be just a mom, or just a businesswoman. You can be both at the same time. You will find a way. You can do an amazing job.

Today's DAY 14 of The Kindness Games and my shoutout goes to Tasha Kossler and the MommaLove ladies.

Tasha's eye for beauty and balance makes makes better graphic designer. She sees what I can't, and is always willing to help.

She carries a weight that many could not through the loss she’s experienced but she does so with grace and joy. She celebrates life. She loves unconditionally. She speaks the truth with love. She encourages.

We’ve journeyed together through many seasons and somehow our “this is crazy,” always aligns.

Sending all my love to the mommas. May you get a few moments alone in the car today!

No matter the road we've traveled with our fathers the destination is ours to choose. Will we choose kindness? Father's Day can fill us with a myriad of feelings, memories, and emotions. Our Dad’s and those to fill the role in our lives make an impact on each of us.

My dad and I have been on a journey full of highs and lows. I continue in the "developmental lab" of leaning in and learning how to respond to our unique relationship. If there is one thing that I can always count on from my dad it is a word of encouragement and a kind smile… you know those kinds that you can feel through the phone speaker.

My Kindness Games DAY 14 and Father's Day shoutout goes to my dad and my brother. They are grandfathers, sons, brothers and friends. They are men who have sustained. They are courageous and curious.

Through their resilience I have waded through deep wells full of love and forgiveness. I have traveled the journey back to joy even when I thought it was too broken to mend. They have taught me that nothing is impossible, and life is worth fighting for.

Happy Father’s Day to all the men who are, will be, have been, have filled in, mentor, lead, and love as Fathers. I celebrate and honor you.

Have you read The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann?

I read it every time I need to re-calibrate myself to the foundations of stratospheric success... to give.

My Kindness Game DAY 13 shoutout goes to Bob Burg.

First through his book, and then through our interactions on LinkedIn, Bob speaks life and truth into my heart time and time again.

We never know the weight that our words carry, and Bob shows up with words that change lives.

He lives out the laws of Stratospheric Success:

The Law of Value:

“Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.”

The Law of Compensation:

“Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.”

The Law of Influence:

“Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people's interest first.”

The Law of Authenticity:

“The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.”

The Law of Receptivity:

“The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.”

Stratospheric Success begins with kind intentions and solid perspectives. I am thankful for you Bob!

Happy Aloha Saturday.

My Aloha Friday and DAY 12 of The Kindness Games shoutout goes to Anna Stone.

She leads with words of wisdom and grace in highly stressful situations.

She teaches me about the value of good research and even better relationship building. She leads with kindness in ways that make people want to follow. Her experience building and sustaining nonprofit organizations has impacted countless lives throughout the Hawaiian islands and around the world.

I am thankful for the ways our paths crossed as we journeyed to China together almost 20 years ago and now that we get to journey together again in new seasons of life.

Happy Aloha Friday!

Candor is kind. Cindy has the ability to make a difference through her whit and candor. She is my DAY 11 shoutout for The Kindness Games. She is grace for the sake of His glory, and grit for the sake of growth.

We met because we wanted to do something with our words and we've grown a deep friendship because we make each other better. She gives me words to get through life time and time again.

She makes me a better writer because details matter, especially the ones that should be left out. She's kind and honest and that is a gift we all need.

She’s my safe person when I’m not a safe person. (Side note : If you're a women living cyclically then it’s likely there are certain times each month you are not a safe person and it’s okay. You are normal. The quicker we can embrace this reality the quicker we can give and receive grace in that space. Find your person to share that space with.)

Now back to day 10 of my journey in The Kindness Games.

Laura Hunter and I met on a trolly headed to Waikiki our freshman year at UH Manoa and we’ve been journeying side by side ever since. She was an entrepreneur before I even knew what that meant. She is a trailblazer in the world of women owned wine companies in the PNW. Her passion for spreadsheets has guided me through slowly delving into the details.

Her friendship sustains me. Her voice fills my heart with joy. She’s the person I try to call when I get a free moment in the car. If you are a mom you know how sacred those moments are.Her resilience and tenacity inspire me. Her steady sails lead the way to uncharted adventure. I am who I am because she is who she is. We are constantly changing together, and I am deeply thankful for that.

In the days when Clubhouse was full of serendipitous moments to meet lifelong friends she took a chance on trusting a stranger.

My Kindness Games DAY 8 shoutout goes to Meg Glessner. We first met through the sound of each other's voice in various clubhouse rooms about podcasting, parenting, or women in business. She welcomed a newbie to the world she was well acquainted with.

Through her leadership relationships opened up to me and a chance to host rooms through Christian Podcast Connect. I have met a group of people who are changing the world by sharing their stories. They are helping others day after day. They are uplifting individuals around the world as they host vital conversations, lay foundations for building legacies, and make space for healing.

Meg has been a mentor to me as she builds communities, thrives as a mother and grandmother, and continues to reimagine the possibilities of her resounding yes.

Do you remember who taught you to shake hands properly?

Jason Payment was that person for me.

The seemingly little things last a long time when done with kindness. Leadership begins with loving people and Jason was the kind of leader that lead and loved in big and small ways. The small ways most often made the greatest impact.

“I love you both and know God will see you through. The saints are praying across the miles because we love and believe in you.” - Lori Higashi

Today’s Day 6 of my journey in The Kindness Games and my shoutout goes to Lori and Guy Higashi.

The Higashi’s have been believing in us for the last 17 years. It is an immensely powerful relationship to have when mentors push you beyond what you believe for yourself because they see your potential. They have walked with us through our failures and celebrated our successes through many seasons.

We wouldn’t be here today without them. They lead with kindness; the kind that changes people. They invite others into their ohana. They love deeply. They spread joy and aloha by simply sharing life, all the parts of it.

We forged a friendship on the playground, and in her treehouse as first graders. We have journeyed through the jungle gym of life ever since.

Her steadfast commitment to lifting others up, especially the little ones who have learned from

her year after year is inspiring. She gives all she's got to her people. Thank you Sarah Hannah for inspiring me to stay consistent, to be loyal, and to love well. My Kindness Games DAY 5 shoutout is for you.

When you work in admissions you are the first face that impacts decision making for prospective students. It is a heavy burden to bear and Sara Fusilier does it with grit and grace.

My DAY 4 of The Kindness Games shoutout goes out to her and the team at McMaster Divinity College.

She led me with kindness when I was the frantic wife of an incoming student who didn't put the proper postage on paperwork traveling from Honolulu, HI to Hamilton, ON. Her steadfast assurance in the people behind the process made all the difference.

We've journeyed together ever since. I was just a student's wife when we became friends. Then we got to be colleagues on staff, and first time mothers together.

You never know what that first impression will lead to. May we begin with kindness.

My Kindness Games DAY 3 shout out goes to Alan Andersen, with an “en”, a firm handshake, and a cup of black coffee.

He loves and sees each person's unique potential. He leads people from experience and empathy. He knows the intricate needs of people because he’s done the hard work of getting to know himself.

He’s been leading me with kindness in big and small ways for three decades.

When I first texted him about starting a business he immediately replied back, “LET’S GO!!!” He’s one of those people that Tim talked about yesterday. “It is so important to have people around you who push you to be your best.”

Alan, thank you for asking the hard questions, for leading by example, and for loving without boundaries!

DAY 2 of my Kindness Games journey shoutout goes to none other than my husband Will Kapahu.

Was I ready for marriage? NO

Are we opposite in many ways? YES

Are we the same people that we married 12 years ago? NO

Have we learned to love each other one day at a time? YES

Marriage is worthwhile work. I don’t know if anyone is really ready for it. You live independent lives until the moment you don’t. How can you be ready for two sinful, selfish, works in progress to be united under one roof?

It takes time to become one. It takes humility, tons of humility! It takes surrender, forgiveness and work!

Once you think you’ve got a rhythm going something unexpected happens forcing you to reimagine what you thought you knew. You begin building a new rhythm.

Last year my husband asked me, “Do you want to start a business?” I said, “yes!”

We are rebuilding a rhythm for this season. We are on a journey that will last a lifetime.

There will be couples who see a counselor for the issues surrounding sexual addiction within marriage, but many other couples will not. Linda Shevkenek, an MA licensed counselor from Canada, has focused the last decade of her practice on helping couples and individuals address sexual addiction. From the safety and convenience of personal viewing space, this conversation will give words to wives preparing for brave conversations addressing sexual addiction.

This is a clip from the Stimulate Summit Session: Addressing Sexual Addiction with Linda Shevkenek || https://www.stimulatesummit.com/

Linda explains the arousal template. Understanding of this often brings relief to couples who have misplaced their blame and shame. Sexual addiction is not particular to gender, religion, culture, or status. It usually begins early in life and, if not addressed, causes devastating results throughout adulthood. She shares the real work of crisis management and building back bridges of trust. She talks about what a lifetime of hiding does to a person's heart, mind, and soul, explaining how brain chemistry and bio neuro- pathways shape our habits, fears, and conversations.

Addressing suspicious behavior, gaslighting, and trying to control a situation are realities addressed in this conversation as well. Betrayal, pain, fear, and shame are real parts of the journey. But there is also space for courage, restoration and freedom. There is nothing easy about addressing sexual addiction, but there is hope when we make space to begin the conversations towards help, health, and wholeness.

SPEAKER BIO: Linda has been a licensed counselor in Canada for over two decades and started working at There is Hope Counseling Center Kelowna, British Columbia in 2006. She is a trained EMDR specialist and, in the last decade, has focused on helping couples and individuals address sexual addiction. She is a mother, grandmother, and wife who lost her husband to cancer in 2009. She staffs the YWAM school of counseling at University of the Nations in Kona, HI, and churches and counseling centers in Canada.

Growing up as a church girl who followed the rules, made a checklist of ideal husband qualities, and kissed dating goodbye the first few years of marriage with sexual desires, expectations, and failures proved to be messy season. Becoming rule breakers was a conversation about the gift of sex, the need for self-discovery, and the value of pleasure.

There are times we enter with nothing left to give, but we still step inside. Something powerful and unifying happens when we enter the bedroom naked and unashamed. We choose to show up because we’ve committed to fight back the darkness of fear, shame, and division. This conversation addresses the mental capacity needed to accept ourselves as wives desired by our husbands.

Becoming rule breakers is a choice to reimagine the rules we used to keep and develop an understanding of sexual desire that serves those who will follow in our footsteps as wives. It is the beginning of a conversation leading to liberation in sensuality, and enjoying sex in marriage for what it can be.

This is a clip from the Stimulate Summit Session: Becoming Rule Breakers with Shaina Weisgerber || https://www.stimulatesummit.com/ ||

SPEAKER BIO: Shaina Weisgerber is a Texas girl, born and raised. Writer, teacher, speaker and creative she lives for the wide open spaces. She loves spending time with her husband, Nick, and their two girls and creating things. Whether it's crafts at the table with her girls, creating content for Sycamore and Sparrow, or dreaming up ways to encourage others through WeisCoaching.

We can have the best intentions, but they will remain good ideas if we don't plan to execute those intentions. Kat boils down goal setting to it’s essential components. What are we trying to accomplish in marriage's spiritual, relational, and physical aspects?

Kat walks us through understanding the goal vs. the problem. She gives examples of common goals to explain the process of solving problems and being consistent. Goals don’t motivate us as much as solving a problem does. If we are going to set S.M.A.R.T. goals for our marriage, we need to begin with an honest reflection of the season and status of our spiritual, relational, physical lives as wives.

Kat shares how breaking down the process into small amounts of time makes it possible to achieve our goals. Imagine the satisfaction of solving a problem that impacts you and your husband through consistency. She will address the barriers we face and teach us how to set ourselves up for success through accountability.

Imagine the satisfaction of solving a problem that impacts you and your husband through consistency. She will address the barriers we face and teach us how to set ourselves up for success through accountability.

BIO: Kat Lee is passionate about teaching others how to jump-start each day with a grace-filled, life-giving morning routine. She is the author of the Hello Mornings book (published by Thomas Nelson), a speaker, podcaster, and the founder of HelloMornings.org. With their three children, she and her husband, Jimmy, live in Waco, Texas.

Starting their careers together while still dating created a unique level of discipline and ownership needed for marriage. Life was busy from the get-go. "My husband is not a mind reader!"

“He should know!” Sixteen years into marriage, Tiffa shares about real struggles and hard situations. She reminds us that our husbands are not mind readers and reflects on the freedom that comes with embracing the truth that he doesn't know unless we’ve told him.

Have we told him that our needs aren’t being met, or have we just used non-verbal cues and expected him to figure it out? Are we exploding in anger before we’ve ever expressed that there is a problem?

There is solidarity in this conversation for wives in all seasons. Tiffa shares the transforming power of sisterhood when a marriage feels hopeless, the humiliating transformation that comes with Godly rebuke, and how asking for help can change the future. Her vulnerability will spark conversation that we’ve been waiting to have but didn’t know if it was safe enough.

She paves the way for the sisterhood of Stimulate Summit attendees.

SPEAKER BIO: Tiffa and her husband Imua have 3 children, Zeo, Zemmy and Zander. She teaches at Pacific Rim Christian University. She is a pastor, preacher and worship leader at C4 Community Church in Honolulu. Tiffa has a strong desire to raise generations to worship and love Jesus and to know Him with strength and joy. She’s passionate about playing guitar, writing songs and serving her church and community.

People are living with pelvic floor dysfunctions, such as incontinence, constipation, pain with sex, pain with menstrual cycles, etc.

If you experience any of these potentially debilitating symptoms of pelvic floor weakness, that can affect the quality of your daily life, something can be done! If you've noticed something that doesn't feel like it's a big deal, but you've made some significant change once you start feeling, that is a big deal.

This is a recap of the Stimulate Summit Session: Understanding Pelvic Floor Health with Dr. Thao, PT, DPT : @drthaodpt - https://www.instagram.com/drthaodpt/

Serving as the “foundation” of the house, our pelvic floor encompasses a sling of muscles and connective tissues. It essentially supports our organs, including bladder, intestines, sexual reproductive organs, and fallopian tube, maintaining control of bowel and bladder movements. If anything goes wrong with the foundation, the entire house (body) is impacted.

Dr. Thao helps us understand the essentials of pelvic floor health for wives (and husbands).

Let's talk about the hard work and intentionality required to learn new roles together. The effort of building bridges between two families, combining years of traditions, and forming a brand new family begins with an honest look inward. There will be trial and error. There will be hurt feelings that need forgiveness.  There will be mistakes that need grace.  We'll need to build a lot of good moments that we can hang on to. They will remind us that it's worth it to go through tough times together. We will come out closer and stronger and with a greater bond.  We will realize we can get through anything together. Something I've become more and more passionate about over the last two years is encouraging wives and hosting brave conversations in community. These conversations have saved me from the overwhelming odds of marriage trials. Learning, sharing, and reaching out has made all the difference along my journey.

You can learn absolutely everything you’d ever want to know about the summit at www. stimulatesummit.com but as a quick overview:

When we can plan well in the little things, the big things come together.

I had four kids in five years, and by nature am not a planner. For years I struggled with mountains of laundry and a sink full of dishes.

Now that I am business owner full time and my husband is at home full time there is no mountain of laundry or sink full of dishes. He plans what dishes are needed for lunch before he sets the table for breakfast. There is so much we can learn from the stay at home men and in this case it's planning proves successful.

We need to accept our failures if we are going re invent our realities. ___

I joke with my friends that I was kind, gentle, and very patient before I had kids. But the reality is, that it is not a joke. We don’t talk about anger a whole lot because it feels shameful to say we get angry and don’t enjoy our kids 100% of the time. Today’s episode is a reminder that if you get irritated and angry in your motherhood journey you are not alone. There are times that it feels like the more I seek the grace of God and spend time with Him the angrier I become towards the people I should be loving the deepest. I can’t explain why this happens I can just tell you that it does. And because it does we must keep seeking the love and grace of Jesus. We must continue to seek Him and find Him even if we feel angry and irritated.

“Grumpy Faces and Crybabies” This could be the title of my family's album cover. The reality is that through each phase of life with kids, especially littles, we find ourselves with either a grumpy face or a crybaby human in our midst... probably both. And the honest truth is that sometimes that person is us. Guilty. If you feel like you’re in a season where this could be the title of your family's album cover too, know that you are not alone! In fact, you are normal, and you are still a good parent. We all have our moments and being surrounded by and full of big emotions is a part of the process and journey of parenthood. May you find a sacred space of solidarity in this episode.

I listened to Jimmy O Yang read his book “How To American” recently and heard him say, “we only realize the goal wasn’t the prize when we get there.” It is easy to get caught up in reaching specific goals because everyone else is doing it. Often times our goals start out vibrant and colorful and we enjoy the creative process of mixing those colors and creating beauty. But somewhere along the way the colors get darker and mixed up. Sometimes we don’t like what we’ve created anymore. We realize that the goal wasn’t the prize. This week’s encouragement is to enjoy the journey, the creative process, even in the hard and also allow ourselves the freedom to dump out the end result (or the goal) if we need too. You are not alone!

Summertime seems to signal seasons of transition. Grade school kids take pride in advancing to the next level, high school graduates take their first steps into the “real world,” and we as women become keenly aware of our body image as we worry about how to fit into our summer wardrobe.

Whether we are planning ahead for college tuition, kindergarten milestones, a new job, a big move, or a health and lifestyle change, transition can be daunting. The battle for truth in the midst of change, unknown futures, reaching for dreams, and overcoming fears is not to be taken lightly. There are so many lies that can swirl around in the midst of transition.

As moms, our minds are constantly filled with thoughts about what is going to happen next. We wonder how today's interactions will affect tomorrow's reactions. We question our worth, value, effectiveness, and ideals as we strive just to get through the day. When we add a season of transition to the mix, our thought life intensifies 10 times, and the reality of making it through to success can feel further out of reach.

So how do we encourage ourselves in this season of transition? We celebrate the little victories. We give ourselves permission to make one decision at a time, and watch the Lord work out the details. We trust ourselves enough to continue training and loving our children, even though it hurts.

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)

We strengthen ourselves in the Lord so that our hearts remain strong for the journey laid before us. We give our future to the Lord in prayer.

May you know that you are not alone in your thoughts and emotions as you transition into a new season. May you be strengthened through the Holy Spirit to receive and give whatever the Lord has for you day by day. And may you remember that you matter in the world, in His kingdom, and you are irreplaceable to your family. May God lead and guide your mind and heart to love, lead, and nurture according to His ways.

A couple months before our wedding my fiancé asked if we should push our date back a bit.

I had barely broken into my 20’s but I thought I knew what I wanted… ahem I mean what God wanted. I thought I knew about the foundations of love and marriage. He told me exactly what he would need, what I was getting into, and if I needed more time. I said no. I thought I was ready.

I was wrong.

I don’t know if anyone is ever really ready. How can you be ready for two sinful, selfish, works in progress to be united under one roof and immediately call it home? We lived independent lives until the moment we were now united as one. You can talk to a lot of people, read lots of words, pray lots of prayers, and prepare for a lot… but you can’t prepare for the day in and day out until you're in it.

It takes time to become one, lots of time. It takes humility, to love well, tons of humility! It takes surrender, forgiveness and work, a lot of work. Oftentimes this work feels unseen.

And once you think you’ve got a rhythm going something unexpected will happen and force you to completely re-learn what you thought you knew. You will begin building a new rhythm again. There will be high highs, and low lows. Those lows in marriage feel lonely, but you are never alone.

In our modern Western culture we often hear the phrase “lone wolf” and think about a person who does their own thing without submitting to a certain “group.” However, the reality is, there are no lone wolves. In nature sometimes a wolf leaves the pack but only when they are finding a mate and starting their own pack. So, they are not leaving to be alone, but to start a new family that will soon be working together to survive.

Sounds familiar doesn’t it? This sounds like motherhood.

There are intricate and sometimes difficult relational dynamics that play into being a part of a pack, but I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that every mom needs one. There are some people in my pack I communicate with daily, and there are others who have been in my pack for decades but I only communicate with them a few times a year. We each have our own strengths, and at the end of the day we wouldn’t survive without each other.

The law of “the jungle” we are living in can be hard to navigate on the best days. “Raising our pups and hunting for food,” gets more and more complex as we are inundated with information at rates like never before. We cannot open our doors to each other like we used to, thanks to a global pandemic; but we need each other more than ever before. Our kids and communities need us to stay in the pack even though sometimes it might feel easier to be a “lone wolf.”

There are seasons for solitude but even in solitude there is sacred space for solidarity.

In his book “Indistractable : How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life,” Nir Eyal talks about the power of our mind. He reminds us that what we say about ourselves matters.

There are countless times throughout my days that I am forced to reshape my thinking in order to work towards an outcome that aligns with my values. I fail more often than I succeed, but there is still something to be said for awareness. And there’s even more to be said about the help of the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts.

Eyal writes “just because we think something about ourselves doesn’t mean we have to believe it.” What would happen if we allowed ourselves to not always believe what we think? There would be room to reimagine our capabilities, and that is the room where freedom and transformation happen.

There’s no one right answer. Each of our circumstances is vastly different, but there is something that is the same. We are all thinking a certain way about ourselves. We all have an opportunity to shift those thoughts to what’s true if we want too, choose too, and receive the help we need to make that happen.

It’s not easy, not at all. But it can be done. Sometimes our thoughts are learned, sometimes they are reactions, and oftentimes they feel overwhelming and out of control. This is normal. This is real life. This is something that can be turned to focused intentions, and great outcomes!

You are not the only one who talks to themself, who doubts their capacity, who blindly believes. We are on this journey together. You are always invited back to this space to walk out our faith together.

“I Made It Worse But I Tried To Make It Better,” this is an honest reality for anyone in a human relationship. We don’t always get it right when it comes to communicating. Sometimes it’s laughable, and other times it means healing is required. This is a story of miscommunication in marriage from the beach, and a conversation around the fire. Unless we are face to face in clear communication with one another we are probably going to get it wrong, and that is normal. We are on this journey together. There is sacred space in solidarity. You are not alone.

There are seasons of motherhood that deplete us completely from any vibrant colors that we once had. Did you know that this is a natural part of life for flamingos as well? But they don’t stay white forever. Eventually, as they regain nourishment, and their littles become more independent, they regain their beautiful pink feathers The further along we get in our motherhood journey the more beautiful our colors become. They might even be more vibrant than ever before. If you are feeling depleted you are not alone! There is hope.

We are living in a crucial moment of history and the way we attach to others will shape our character for the good or the bad. Our kids need us to form healthy attachments with them. Our world needs us to reflect on our own character.

My hope for us all this week is that we can think about how and what we are attached to.

In his book Renovated, Jim Wilder writes in the concluding paragraphs the following words. “Attachment is pivotal to character development. Hesed with bad company grows bad character, while hesed with upright company grows good character. Pain that sticks with us comes from broken attachments. Attachment sticks. Death, abandonment, neglect, betrayal, conflict, and the social problems associated with them derive from attachment gone wrong.”

We have a choice to make about which attachments we are allowing our days to be shaped by. My encouragement for us this week is to simply, deeply, think about our own attachments and how they are shaping our character.

There is so much hope to be found in the story of Mary M. and Mary as they walked to the tomb where Jesus was buried and wondered how they would get to his body with the heavy stone in their way.

All along our journeys there are situations that seem unmovable, yet time and time again we arrive to a, "stone rolled away." My hope for us this week is that we can find strength in the sacred space of solidarity, and in the invitation of the Risen Jesus to continue journeying even if you don't know how it will end.

Listen until the end of the episode to hear my raw 5:20am reflections on Marks account of this story of the journey towards the stone rolled away and the invitation given to these women as the first to experience the Risen Jesus.

There is a pattern that runs throughout our history of threat of judgement and reality of hope. There is a pattern of God’s faithfulness and a call to perseverance. There is a pattern of refugees who sought safety in temples and forerunners who came first in military campaigns. And there is Jesus who went forward on our behalf and changed everything.

Stay tuned to the end of the episode to hear that story told by my five year old.

Friends there is something to take hope for even if it feels like there is nothing left. May we find ourselves in the pattern of perseverance, seeking refuge, and clinging to hope.

Heb 6:17-20

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”

Carla Naumburg wrote in her book titled How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t With Your Kids, “We are always practicing something even if it is not something that we want to get better at.”

What a powerful reality to bring us to a place of noticing our daily habits. Sometimes we are practicing things that we were modeled and we are unaware that we do them. Sometimes we are well aware of practicing a bad habit but we just don’t stop because the reality is that we humans can be morons. Other times we have intentionally cultivated daily habits that help us practice what we actually want to get better at.

My encouragement for us this week is to think about what we are practicing. May we always remember that we have a choice in what we are getting better at. There is abundant grace for the journey. None of us get it right all the time, but the more we practice what is good, the better we get at it.

You are not alone!

Have you been carrying around an underlying expectation of timeliness that triggers you to #momguilt or #losingit with your loved ones? This is your gentle reminder that seasons change and so does our ability to show up, “on time.” Give yourself grace, and do the next thing in front of you until you get to where you need to be, at whatever time it ends up being.

In his book Fluent In Three Months, author Benny Lewis talks about a study conducted at University of California Los Angeles in which they found that “93% of communication of emotions is non verbal, and a majority of non-verbal communication is universal.”

“A laugh is a laugh across the world.”

I LOVE the reality that we don’t have to be the same age, come from the same place, or speak the same language to laugh together.

Whatever today brings may we find someone to laugh with. Call your friend who never fails to make your belly tired from laughing, watch a comedy special, send a meme, or tell jokes with your kids.

May we be reminded not to disregard the leftovers too soon. In marriage, motherhood, and community some of the richest experiences can come from the conversations that happen after the big celebrations. We wouldn’t have leftovers without the extravagant meal, but sometimes that leftover meal the next day brings new flavor and richness to the relationship. May we embrace this “leftover love” in a whole new way.

I recently finished reading “Seal Team Six,” by Howard E. Wasdin, and was struck by his use of the phrase, “ You’re Not A Finished Product.” If anyone had experienced one extreme situation after another it was him. In one of his darkest recovery moments he felt these words spoken over him as a reminder to keep pressing forward through the pain.

In our productivity culture sometimes we forget to embrace the journey. My quick encouragement to our hearts this week is to remember that whatever we are walking through is a unique part of our journey. Perhaps today is not about the finish line but the journey we take to get there.

“What if the church on Sunday was the church on Monday too?” I heard these words on the radio driving home in the rain this weekend.

As I prepare for our first Coffee W/ Bible + Pop Culture of the year, live on Facebook this Wednesday, I’ve been thinking a lot about how Sundays have significantly shaped my journey. I’m also preparing for a message on “Gratitude in Community,” I’ll be sharing at friends church this coming Sunday. So, these song lyrics touched extra deep.

“What if the church on Sunday was the church on Monday too?”

I don’t know about you, but my Monday wake up energy is a 180 degree turn from Sunday. Sometimes this is a good turn, and sometimes it is not.

What if everything we put into Sunday morning we put into Monday, and maybe even more? What if each of our days began with the same vigor for what God has in store for the day ahead? It is possible.

Sunday morning meant something drastically opposite to me as a child than it does now. That is partly due to my life season, current roles, and state of the world. It’s is also partly due to the realization that I needed to take an intentional look at what the relationship built around Sunday’s meant. In some cases it was about letting go, re-learning, forgiving, and repenting for what I let Sunday become.

Themore I think about what Sunday was, what Sunday is now, and what it will be one day… The more I am convinced that Monday’s hold vast significance.

My encouragement for this week ahead is a simple message that I’m preaching to myself:

Let’s make Monday matter!

Hark the Herald Angels Sing

"with angelic host proclaim “Christ is born in Bethlehem."

I'm intrigued by proclamations of the Angels throughout this song: naming Jesus as King, and pointing [the shepherds] to Bethlehem where Christ has just been born.

Bethlehem, in the eyes of the world at the time of Jesus’ birth, was no place for a king to be born, let alone the Christ. Yet here we are invited to proclaim, alongside an army of angels, that the savior the world has come to earth in a small shepherds town, a city of David, anointed by God to save his people.

“hark! the herald angels sing "glory to the newborn king””

Heaven gathers an army of angels (a scene familiar in the history of the Bible (1Kings 22:19, 2Chr 18:17) to welcome the new king born to mankind. But, who is this king?

He definitely wasn't next in line by way of King Herod. In fact upon hearing news of his birth Herod launched an all out war against his life (trying to get the Magi to give up his location, and then killing all the firstborn sons). He wasn't the king the Jews anticipated would lead them valiantly into battle against their enemies. He was the king who left his throne in heaven. The king that took the form of mankind in order to pay the ultimate sacrifice for its freedom from sin. The king of ultimate humility and obedience. And the king of our hearts

In the heat of the moment it’s hard to see that eventually we will appreciate this thing that is causing us strife. As I watched my daughter try to put together a puzzle she had just completed she was filled with frustration because she had placed the wrong corner piece where it didn’t belong. As soon as she realized her mistake and placed it in the right place the frustration turn to joy. This reminds me of my own attitude. Often times I just need to hold on long enough through the anger and frustration to realize that I will appreciate the things that frustrating me. As we walk together in this holiday season through a global pandemic and a year that none of us could have expected me we be ready to shift our attitudes and expectations as we put one piece of the puzzle together at a time.

This is a story about our picture taking adventure this year for our family Christmas card. The way my kids reacted to the experience made me think about what we see in a picture verse how we experience daily life together. What are we hiding behind our smiles? You don’t have to hide here. You will always be invited back even if you just can’t get yourself to smile today. May you find hope in solidarity and a soft place to land as you listen these words.

“The sleeping child you're holding is the Great, I Am…”

This line gets me every time. Sleeping children are a sight to behold, aren’t they? In those moments of absolute pause, all the tears and heartache of the day, all the chaos, and the work that lead up to that nap or bedtime is somehow lost in the pure innocence of their deep measured breaths and their motionless growing limbs. In that moment we gain new perspective, our love is refreshed, and our heart is filled with hope for when they will awake. Even Mary, who was holding the infant who would grow into the “I Am” we find in book of John. Even Mary, whose child’s eyes were resting in sleep, who would awake to grow up and give sight to the blind. Even Mary, who pushed through fear in obedience to God's call to be a part of His story.

I love how this song melds together the reality of the ministry of Jesus and the ministry of motherhood. Although Mary’s circumstances were unique, to say the least, she was still a woman, a wife, and a mother. She wondered, she worried, and experienced all the emotions that come with pregnancy and preparing for the childbirth and life beyond it.

She also had the unique experience of knowing that her son was being brought to this earth in order to die. She knew what the scriptures said about the messiah and his role in diminishing the death caused by sin in the world once and for all.

“When you kiss your little Baby you kiss the face of God?”

You know those kisses... the ones we sneak in every moment we can because one day it won't be that easy. The reality that when Mary snuck in those kisses she kissed the face of God, is a beautiful reminder of the raw, real, relevant humanity of Christ. The bible doesn't say it, but I'm sure Jesus needed those kisses from his momma too.

There is only one Mary Jesus' mother, just as there is only one ________(fill in your name) mother of __________ (fill in your child’s(ren’s) name(s). As you hear this song in the coming days may it remind you of the sacred calling God has given you as a mother. He has given you power to change the world and purpose for your every move in the way you love, invest in, and train your children. The struggle to get them to sleep and the kisses you give whenever you can are not in vain.

The people of Israel exiled, broken, and awaiting a savior found hope in the coming of Emmanuel- a mighty king who would protect them from their enemies. They held on to a promise from Isaiah that a son from the line of Jesse would stand as a signal to all the nations that God was fighting for them. They anticipated a light coming that would dispel the darkness and gloom and open up a way to heaven. From the One who gave the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai, would come a savior born to the world to bring the law of freedom and grace. This is the hope, the grace, the God, the Savior, and the promise of God's immanent presence with us that we sing about with this hymn.

But now, our hope has come. The sign Isaiah wrote about has become a reality. The light has broken through the darkness. Our Messiah has arrived. Not on a chariot, or clothed in battle armor, but in the form of a child - naked, dependent, and human. As moms this is a life form that we are well acquainted with. Sometimes it is hard to imagine that life on earth for the saviour of the world began just like the lives of our little ones, but it is true. This was Emmanuel, “God with us,” human in every sense of the word. He needed to be fed, clothed, and loved just like our little ones. He needed to play outside and help around the house, study the Torah and listen to his parents. He needed to learn manners, and ‘the way things worked.” He needed a mom and a dad to learn from.

As we find ourselves in these winter months trapped by the cold, and darkness of the early sunsets, may we be reminded of the light that has come into the world. He shows us the way to heaven. As we sing “O Come O Come Immanuel,” may we feel less alone in knowing that a righteous king has indeed come to save us (yes You). May we look at our little ones as a reminder of God's presence with us, and may we never lose sight of his ever present love and intentionality towards our human hearts.

O come O come Immanuel, may we be ever aware of your presence with us this year and may it change us moment by moment to be more like you.

1 Thes 5:18 "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

For Paul and the early Church gratitude (and obligation) was part of ethical thinking. It was the means by which civic relationships were started, solidified, affirmed, and articulated. It was a way of life.

Still today gratitude can be foundational to our daily routines if we are intentional about it.

Last week I got to chat with violence and suicide prevention expert Latasha Davinson about how to dig deep to find gratitude when there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. She said the key is intentionality.

May Thanksgiving 2020 be a catalyst towards a lifestyle of gratitude in the intimate relationships and spaces of our lives.

Wait, what? Yes, you read that right, and although you might have a million reasons to disagree, let’s sit with this tension for a minute.

The way we measure time and interpret the use of its terms shapes every aspect of our lives. It permeates our daily routines, our interpretation of scripture, and how we compare ourselves to others, especially in the Western world.

It is a Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said, “Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.”
