‘Building Justice’ originates from Sacramento State University’s Center on Race, Immigration and Social Justice. (CRISJ).
The podcast explores critical issues affecting our communities with the hope of creating a healthier and more just world. The ongoing conversations between the Sacramento State community and regional partners aim to spark understandings, empathies, and motivation to join the struggle for a better future for all.

Sacramento State Professor Dr. Jaime Jackson talks with Civic Engagement and Social Justice Interns Franny Dewey and Joseph Sais who have been working at Social Justice Politicorps to learn about increased accountability and transparency in local government. They interviewed local leaders on racial equity in K-12 education and Higher-Ed to share what more can be done to improve education access in Sacramento.

In this episode, Dr. Manuel Barajas, Professor of Sociology at Sac State speaks with Sociology Professor Dr. Heidy Sarabia about what motivated the creation of the Center on Race, Immigration and Social Justice. Speaking from his lived experiences and research, Dr. Barajas talks about the erasure people of color, in academia, i.e., curriculum, faculty, and leadership. He also reflects on why Mexicans, as people of indigenous ancestry, continue to face much hostility not only in the nation, but also in higher education.
Manuel Barajas, Professor of Sociology at Sac State and co-founder of Sac State’s Center on Race, Immigration and Social Justice (CRISJ) offers Sociology Professor Dr. Heidy Sarabia a recounting of his family's migration and farm labor experiences and growing up in Stockton, California, elaborating his relationship to family, community, and work. He also shares his experiences going to college as a first-generation student at U-C Davis.
In this episode, Dr. Kristina Flores Victor shares her history about creating the Odyssey Mentoring Program with Dr. Danielle Slakoff. Dr. Flores Victor also discusses conducting student-led research on the experiences of first-generation students in higher education.

The pair also discuss Dr. Slakoff's work on the Missing White Woman Syndrome, a phenomenon relate to the overrepresentation of missing White women and girls in the media compared to their non-White counterparts.
Erik Ramirez, Coordinator of the Dreamer Resource Center at Sacramento State, discusses how the Center functions to empower and transform the lives of students impacted by undocumented status. The discussion explores how institutional agents—including staff, administrators, faculty and students—can work collaboratively to build social justice within institutional settings.
