Creating equitable learning spaces requires you to not only see a person's unique gifts, talents and circumstances, but it requires you to evaluate your possible bias around them in order to work past it and provide the individual students what is needed for their success. In order to truly see people completely and respect them enough to identify and honor their unique gifts, geniuses, circumstances, and definitions of success, the journey has to start with you; with cultural competence. In that part of the journey we unearth the beautiful and broken pieces of your story - your cultural identity markers - that impact who you are in your personal life and as an educator. Jump into this episode to learn more about the power of cultural identity markers.

The equity journey begins with you, your decision. That might seem wild because most people who talk about equity start with the students. The students matter 100%, but so do you, and honestly your journey impacts theirs because it influences how you show up as a n educator. So, as you are charting your course and mapping out the next brave steps you have to begin with you. Jump into this episode to learn all about this and the two other bold, brave steps to take next.

Creating culturally aware learning spaces that intentionally develop cultural competence are critically important IF you feel the purpose of education is to guide students on a learning and discovery journey, not just stuff them with facts. This is important if you desire to help students develop the ability to think deeply and critically about topics, not just take things at face value. It is important if you want students to develop as creative and curious learners. It is important if you want every student to realize they are a genius. On this episode, I share some strategies for effectively creating a culturally responsive social studies classroom. The three quotes I mentioned for consideration are below:
“History is always written by the winners. When two cultures clash, the loser is obliterated, and the winner writes the history books—books which glorify their own cause and disparage the conquered foe. As Napoleon once said, ‘What is history, but a fable agreed upon?’” - The Davinci Code
“Until the lion learns how to write, every story will glorify the hunter.” - African Proverb
“Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world.” -Paulo Freiere (Pedagogy of Oppression)
