In this episode, Dr. Danielle interviews Dr. Lauren Steinman, a SIBO expert, about small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and its impact on hormonal health and fertility. They discuss the symptoms of SIBO, the different types of SIBO, and the root causes of the condition. They also explore the testing and treatment options for SIBO, including antibiotics and herbal remedies. Dr. Lauren emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of SIBO and working with a practitioner who takes a holistic approach. She also provides tips for preventing relapses and recommends abdominal massage for supporting gut motility.
About Dr. Lauren Steinman:
"Having grown up in Germany, I had the great fortune to experience a holistic style of medicine from an early age.
This inspired me to study at the oldest naturopathic medical school in the US (The National University of Natural Medicine), in Portland Oregon. During my four year doctoral training, I underwent rigorous classroom and clinical training, and spent extra time focusing my clinical education on women's health and digestive health.
SIBO is my clinical focus and I am one of a handful of experts treating this condition in Europe. Having suffered from SIBO myself, I know how frustrating it can be. In my 7 years of practice I have treated thousand of SIBO patients. Most of my patients come to me after a long and difficult journey with their gut health and travel to my practice from all over Germany and Europe. I am passionate about treating this complex condition and training healthcare providers in the specifics of SIBO.
In Germany I am licensed to practice as a Heilpraktiker due to differences in medical licensing. "

In this episode, Dr. Danielle discusses the hormone DHEAS and its importance in fertility. DHEAS is a hormone made in the adrenal glands and is converted from DHEA. Testing DHEAS levels can provide a better understanding of DHEA production and adrenal function. While high DHEAS levels are common in women with PCOS, low DHEAS levels can be found in those struggling with infertility. Low DHEAS levels can lead to low estrogen levels, irregular or absent ovulation, and thin uterine lining. DHEA supplementation can improve egg quality, ovarian function, and fertility outcomes.

Navigating the different medication options for thyroid disease, like Hashimoto's, can be overwhelming, especially when you're not feeling well, and people don't always receive all the information that's out there. That's why this week, I'm clarifying the difference between synthetic and desiccated thyroids and the medications available. I cover:
Levothyroxine, also known as Synthroid, and the benefits of synthetic hormones.
Liothyronine, also known as Cytomel, how it works, when it helps the most, and potential risks.
Desiccated Thyroid Hormones, or desiccated pig thyroid, how they work, and the potential benefits and problems.
Remember, there is some trial and error to the process, so be sure to continue to test your levels and don't accept the first option you're given if it's not working for you.

It’s a story I’ve heard a million times. After going to the doctor with a string of symptoms, your doctor tells you that everything with your labs is normal. However, you don’t feel normal. The college atmosphere can really work against a woman with PCOS (hello, stress, alcohol, and lack of sleep!). Today’s podcast guest, Jenna, has learned how to excel in college while also working toward healing her PCOS.
For Jenna, signs of PCOS began with weight struggles, cystic acne, insatiable hunger, and irregular periods in high school. As an athlete, she was told irregular periods were normal.
When we started working together in Spring of 2021 Jenna is now experiencing regular periods, no more bloating, better energy, and balanced hunger and moods.
In this episode, she tells the sweet story of how her dad was the one that figured out she was dealing with PCOS, the impact of college and Covid on her journey to healing, and how a big summer internship taught her the importance of managing stress for healthy hormones.

When the dust settled after the end of Gillian’s dietetic internship, she realized she had been in survival mode and ignoring symptoms with her period for awhile. Now a registered dietician, she began to notice 55 day cycles, fatigue, mood swings, and horrible cramps.
She knew her period was a great source of information and that her symptoms were telling her something was off. Because her symptoms weren’t the traditional PCOS symptoms of weight gain and hair in unwanted places, she didn’t originally consider PCOS.
Through the PCOS Protocol, we began working together to help find answers to her tough, irregular periods.
In this episode, Gillian discusses all the changes that made a world of difference in her cycle, energy, and mood, including doing the Dutch test and implementing targeted supplements, getting her blood sugar in check, accountability from the protocol, and incorporating strength training.
Now Gillian experiences regular 32 day cycles with no PMS symptoms. She has renewed energy and life feels much brighter!

Since her first period, Keri experienced irregular cycles, long and heavy periods, and PMS symptoms such as cramping and nausea. While she always suspected something was off, it wasn’t until her friend mentioned her own struggle with PCOS that Keri had a lightbulb moment and began to connect the dots between her symptoms and PCOS.
A nurse herself, Keri saw first hand as conventional doctor’s ignored her and let her down as she sought answers to her symptoms.
Not knowing where else to turn or who to trust, Keri would spend 7 more years dealing with irregular periods, PMS, and struggles with fertility.
Months after joining my PCOS Protocol, Keri got pregnant! Our focus then switched to a healthy pregnancy, healthy baby, and energy to enter into motherhood. Keri is now 5 months postpartum with a beautiful baby girl.
In this episode, Keri tells us what changes she made that helped to heal her PCOS and fertility. She also talks about her family history of gestational diabetes and how she avoided it with her pregnancy. Finally, she encourages listeners to be their own advocates and that pregnancy with PCOS is possible!

Today, on my podcast, I am joined by Kelly Jackson, otherwise known as @thestudio.atl. Kelly fell in love with Pilates in her 20’s, but it wasn’t until she had two kids that she really understood the therapeutic affect it can have as well. Pilates helped reconnect her mind and body postpartum. It gave strength and ease to her daily movements and inspired her to want to share this experience with other women who, at times, feel like strangers in their own bodies. She also wanted to create a space for clients to feel welcome and at ease while connecting to their bodies. Many of the studios she attended in Atlanta felt very cold or unwelcoming to “non-ideal” body types. She believes everyone deserves a positive movement experience and that class should be an escape from any stress or negativity. Kelly has been in marketing for 18 years and was excited to combine her work experience with her passion. You’ll see her at the front desk of The Studio Pilates and also getting certified through Polestar.

Most of the time, you don't get that much time with your doctor, so the more prepared you can be, the more you will benefit from your visit.
