Vision & Graft: Recent Episodes

Richard William Preisner

Just like a lot of millennials I was thrown out of university into the real world without much guidance, having to find my feet in the middle of a recession. I took the risky path of freelancing in the film industry in London without much experience, working hand to mouth to pay my rent. Over the next decade I got so all consumed by being on the career treadmill that I forgot why I decided to be a filmmaker in the first place and my mental health and personal life slipped to rock bottom.

I needed to find a way out, be inspired again and learn how to build greater resilience to face the challenge of being my own boss - so I turned to the successful and incredible artists I was surrounded by and started Vision & Graft!

I'm Will Preisner, a freelance cinematographer & photographer and in Vision & Graft I'll be sharing the real stories behind extraordinary creative careers and discovering what effects these journeys can have on our mental wellbeing. Each episode features a new creative guest taking a frank and honest look at their career and the hurdles they've faced along the way. It's a go to source for inspiration, ideas and insights into how to develop resilience and take on life's challenges. So join me for the next episode of Vision & Graft - a career and resilience companion, hosted by Cinematographer & Photographer Richard William Preisner @rwpreisner.

In Episode 10 of Vision & Graft I'm chatting to Hannah Lee, a designer I've had the pleasure of working alongside on a variety of projects over the last ten years and for the ten years prior to that we went to college and school together. Hannah is someone I've often gone to for professional advice and she has a great deal of career wisdom to share.

In the episode Hannah and I discuss the merits of freelancing and she shares what the experience is like compared to 'perming' at an agency. She also covers the money trap and how being in full time employment can lead to this if you don't watch out.

We then go on to discuss burnout and how to find the right work life balance. Hannah has realised that she needs to strive to maintain that balance if she wants to be effective at work and she also covers working abroad as a freelancer and finding the balance far from home.

Saying no is a big topic on this podcast and we discuss this in the context of charging what you are worth and we mull over how to get to the point where what you consistently charge aligns with what you think your skills are worth.

Hannah also raises an important point about women in powerful roles within advertising and how she has been working on improving her confidence to keep progressing and growing in her career.

It always inspires me to hear him speak. In this episode we pick up where we left off in Part 1 with Jack sharing what guides him when prioritising between his various creative endeavours. We also consider the concept known as 'essentialism' as opposed to perfectionism and how taking this approach can help us to move forward in our careers and with our work more effectively. We discuss Jack's approach to his wellbeing and the things that he does to help, particularly as society is reopening in the UK after Covid. Jack shares his motivation behind his creative work as I push him to find out what it is that gives him his creative spark and the impressive drive that i’ve always admired in himFinally we discuss what success is to Jack and he flips the question back at me before we get onto my slightly controversial interpretation of Singing in the Rain, the song by Gene Kelly.

In the episode Jeroen shares what an Assistant Director's job role is and why it is so important to the success of a film

We also discuss keeping calm under pressure and communicating with different directors who are each creatives with different ways of working. We consider how important 'clicking' with collaborators is and whether it is important.

We talk at length about managing personal relationships when you have a busy freelance life and the challenges that come up that can cause problems.

Finally we look at the dangers of taking the same approaches to new creative work and why it's important to keep things fresh without running yourself into the ground.

During the break I announce a competition I'm running alongside Rosco to win a Rosco MIXBOOK Digital Swatchbook. Full T&Cs are available at visiongraft.com

In Episode 11 of Vision & Graft I'm talking to Emily Carlton, a screenwriter, journalist and producer who is also one of the cofounders of the Breaking Through The Lens initiative that connects female and non-binary filmmakers to finance at film markets. Emily is so humble and amusing in the way she discusses her career that her honest take on her freelance life is one I highly recommend listening to.

In the episode Emily and I discuss the themes of mental health and her interest in people in her screenwriting work as well as where she finds her inspiration as a writer.

We also discuss the challenge Emily has had having dyslexia as a writer and the skill of knowing when to stop working on a project and to move on to the next.

Emily shares her process of getting an agent and the long path to acquiring one before we chat about the challenge of poor pay at the start of a creative career and how to balance doing what you love with paying the bills.

Finally we go on to discuss Breaking Through The Lens and the reason why she started the initiative as well as her passion for equality.

In Episode 9 of Vision & Graft I'm chatting to a good mate and a long time mentor Chris Fergusson. He's a cinematographer and photographer based in the UK and you can find links to his work at the bottom of this page.

During the conversation Chris talks about his photography project Lost in Process. He is selling a zine for the project that is available to order here -

https://chrisfergusson.co.uk/photography1/lostinprocess/

In this episode Chris gives an idea of the work a cinematographer does on a daily basis and gives a sense of intensity of his job. He goes onto share the path he followed to becoming a cinematographer and how it was unorthodox but lead to his success.

We then go onto discuss how he learned the techniques and skills to be a cinematographer and an artist and also maintain that growth as he moves forward. Chris highlights how he has benefitted from embracing his own style and actively moving away from comparison with his peers. We then get in deep discussing creative boundaries and how limiting your options can be creatively liberating.

During the break I announce a competition I'm running alongside Rosco to win a Rosco MIXBOOK Digital Swatchbook. Full T&Cs are available at visiongraft.com

Chris goes onto cover his experiences working with directors and other creative partners and how he nurtures those relationships. We talk about how a cinematographers job is mostly problem solving and how Chris juggles wearing many hats at work. He shares how his attitude to solving problems has been managed by maintaining a positive approach to handling them and having a mantra he repeats to himself.

I feel grateful that Chris then openly discusses the impact his career has had on his mental wellbeing and what he has done to try to understand the difficulties he has faced. He discusses his personal artwork and the benefits having his own creating projects has on his life. Chris then explains his idea for his project Lost in Process and how the project came together despite difficult setbacks.

In Episode 008 of Vision & Graft I'm sharing part 2 of the conversation I have with director and all round creative, Jack Howard. You can find links to some of his work that we discuss at the bottom of this page. If you haven't heard Part 1 of our conversation be sure to listen back to it in episode 7.

Jack currently hosts a podcast on Amazon Prime called the screen test, is one half of comedy duo Jack & Dean, hosts a podcast with film buff Mark Kermode and directs music videos and commercials amongst many other things. His multi faceted creative approach is great proof that a successful creative career can be very varied and that we need not stay in our lanes.

Jack shares his motivation behind his creative work as I push him to find out what it is that gives him his creative spark and the impressive drive that i’ve always admired in him

Finally we discuss what success is to Jack and he flips the question back at me before we get onto my slightly controversial interpretation of Singing in the Rain, the song by Gene Kelly.

We are never alone in the struggles that we face.

In Episode 007 of Vision & Graft I'm talking to my mate and a director I have worked with on a number of occasions, Jack Howard. He describes himself as a 'director of things' and his work is certainly wide ranging. You can find links to some of his work that we discuss at the bottom of this page

It is inspiring to me to hear him speak.

In this episode Jack tells the story of his career so far and how he started out in the early days of youtube. We then move onto talk about how being persistent and resilient has got Jack to where he is now and how he intends to maintain this mindset.

We then discuss what is good cinematography in filmmaking and how having that approach and mentality can translate to other areas of work and life. Jack shares how important it is for him to foster grear working relationships and what he looks for in potential collaborators as we reflect on the director-cinematographer relationship.

We then move onto look at Jack’s youtube video ‘Sci Fi & Depression’(link below) which I highly recommend watching if you have the chance to pause the podcasts and take a look before listening to the conversation.

Finally we look at what life lessons Jack has learned during covid as well as the biggest hurdle he has faced in his career so far.

Be sure to get in touch with what you think and Episode 008, the second part of this podcast will be out soon!

In Episode 005 of Vision & Graft I chat to Caroline De Moraes, a sports reporter and presenter based in the UK. Caroline has worked for BT Sport, ITV, Eurosport, Channel 4, Redbull and BBC sport amongst many other broadcasters and production companies.

Caroline begins the episode by explaining how she found herself presenting despite it not being her first choice of career and moves on to discuss the value of diversifying as a freelancer, especially to weather the more difficult moments in your career.

We go on to talk about networking and what it actually is (and what it isn't!). We then discuss the need to focus on our strengths at times of adversity and the advantages of making an effort to be aware of your mental health. This conversation covers Imposter syndrome and the impaxt that this can have on putting ourselves out there.

Caroline and I then chat about comments about how we look for both men and women, in particular those in front of the camera and the lasting effects this can have.

Finally we consider the impact freelance life can have on relationships, living a life with constant travel and pushing ourselves hard at work as well as what all of this can do to our overall mental wellbeing.

To be able to chat to Caroline so openly about her experiences was really eye opening and she is such a great storyteller. I could listen for days!

In Episode 004 of Vision & Graft I chat to Diandra Ferreira, a hair and make up designer based in the UK. Diandra and I have worked together on a number of occasions including on on our first feature film, Trendy.

We begin the episode by discussing whether we see our roles as a career, a calling or a job and what these terms mean to us and our career motivations.

We go on to talk about the feature film Trendy and our collaboration on that film. Diandra shares her experiences and views with regards to respect in the workplace. I ask her about her views on working for free and how to judge when may be right to do this and my favourite part is when Diandra shares her wisdom about how important it is to trust your gut.

We highlight the value of communication for creatives being approached for work and approaching others to collaborate, before talking about the difficulties freelancers face with job security and managing the unknown. Finally we go on to talk about adjusting expectations and being adaptable as we navigate our careers, 'going with the flow' to see where it takes us.

To be able to chat to someone with Diandra 's experience on film sets is always a pleasure and her knowledge and experience provides great takeaways for creatives.

In Episode 003 of Vision & Graft I sit down to talk to Karen Sandoval Engler, a Mexican actress based in Texas who I have collaborated with on a number of occasions including as the cinematographer on her first short film #Disconnected.

We begin by talking about how we met and reflect on the reception that Vision & Graft has had. We discuss the concept of bravery when it comes to discussing mental wellbeing and the power of vulnerability in both creative work and our personal lives.

We go on to talk about how Karen started out on her creative journey as a child and the support she received from her mother. Finally we discuss our experiences of the editing process and the merits of choosing to be who you truly are vs who you think you should be.

I'm very grateful for Karen's open and honest approach to the discussion and listening to her experiences gives great insight, especially for any upcoming actors.

In Episode 002 of Vision & Graft I sit down to talk to Conor O'Callaghan, a London based director who I have collaborated with on many occasions, most recently on his short film maithiúnas.

We begin by talking about one of my inspirations for starting the podcast, the BBC documentary, Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency and the impact it had on us both. The documentary explores the mental health and suicide crisis affecting young men and seeks to find answers to the growing problem.

I recommend that you watch the documentary and have provided a link below.

We go on to discuss the shocking mental health and suicide statistics the documentary presents to us and then to the importance of talking about our emotions, in particular for men.

Conor very kindly opens up about his own experiences growing up and working as creative and this insight makes the episode well worth listening to. There are great takeaways I'm sure we can all benefit from.

In this first episode I want to lay the groundwork by talking openly and honestly about my experiences.

I  begin by introducing the Vision & Graft podcast and the reasons behind why I decided to make a podcast about creative career hurdles, mental health challenges and personal life mayhem.

I go on to discuss the biggest hurdle in my life so far - battling depression for the past two years whilst working as a freelance cinematographer & photographer. I talk openly and honestly about my personal experience of depression and the rollercoaster ride it has taken me on personally and professionally.

I finally move on to discuss a selection of tips and techniques I have picked up and developed along the way to help manage my depression and I highlight the importance of reaching out to others. That is both reaching out to your friends and family to check that they are okay and reaching out to those around you when you are in need of someone to talk to.

We are never alone in the struggles we face.

Vision & Graft aims to inspire action, give hope and normalise the discussion of mental health issues within creative sectors as well as more widely throughout society.
