In this episode, we explore the concept of the "marginal decade," coined by Dr. Peter Attia, and its significant implications for both health and financial planning. The marginal decade refers to the last ten years of life, emphasizing the importance of preparing early to ensure a healthy and fulfilling life in those final years.
I explain how this concept can be applied to financial planning by breaking down life into distinct stages. Starting with the investing and development stage during early working years, we move through the spending and leisure phase typically around retirement age, and finally into the marginal decade and later life.
Learn how proactive planning can help you maintain your desired lifestyle throughout your life, avoid common pitfalls, and make the most of your financial resources. Whether it’s saving diligently during your working years or spending wisely in retirement, understanding the balance between saving and spending is crucial.
Tune in to discover how to align your financial strategies with your long-term health and life goals, ensuring that you can enjoy life to the fullest in every decade.

I have 'journaled' in the past but never really got far with it, I have always found keeping diaries or journals to restrictive! the pages that they give you never really fitted my requirements or how I wanted to journal. As a result I never got far with it and stopped when the barriers became to many. I also felt that journalling meant writing for ages and dumping every part of your day down onto the page. I am a big note taker and I have way to many note books with random notes in them, I also have lots of notes on my phone but no way of finding these notes when I need them or reflecting on them after the event.
At the beginning of the year, I decided to revisit the idea of keeping a journal as I could feel my mental health taking a real battering due to the current lockdown that had started in December. The challenges of running a business and looking after kids at home was really having an effect on my positivity and ability to deal with day to day situations. I looked to journalling to be able to help get my thoughts down and out of my head.
After looking at different journalling styles I decided to follow the Bullet Journal Method which was originally created by Ryder Carrol and you can take a look at his website for lots of instructional vides bulletjournal.com
Now if you google, check our youtube or pintrest then you will see lots of very ornate and crafted journals "BUJOs" but this woudl never have worked for me, to many barriers straight away, thats why i prefer the minimalist approach. Here are some of the benefits
You can set up the journal how ever you please
It helps me organise my day and future weeks & Months
I can track longer term goals or habits
Keeps all my notes in one place
Helps me stay more productive working on the important goals and not the 'fluff' that are really just distractions
Helps my mental health by allowing me reflection time to get my thoughts down on paper and out of my head - 3 gratitude points every day
Its quick and easy and not overwhelming
I love stationery haha

In this episode I look to answer a question that I get asked a lot in my financial planning business. Should I consolidate my pension?
The days of someone working for the same employer their whole life has pretty much disappeared, its more like you will move around during your career and have multiple jobs. Its not uncommon for someone to accumulate lots of different workplace pensions over the years and I have seen more and more people with 6 or 7!
This can lead to an admin headache and loosing touch with the pension providers or reams of paperwork coming through your door when the statement arrives. Worse still it could be that these forgotten pensions are left in poor performing and expensive investments.
Consolidating them into one pot could be a good idea and help reduces the charges in your scheme and maybe give you access to a wider investment options, particularly when it comes to ethical investing options.
However, there are things to look out for when moving pensions. Some older pensions may apply exit penalties when you move them.
If you are lucky enough to have a final salary pension, this is often best left where it is.
Older personal pensions may also have additional benefits that you will lose when transferring, for example a tax free cash amount that is higher than the standard 25%. it could provide a valuable Guaranteed Annuity Rate that provides you with a higher income than would be available on the open market.
Hopefully this information gives you some areas that you could consider when thinking about consolidating your pension schemes but as always this is information purposes only and everyones situation is personal to them. I would recommend that you seek financial advice when considering this.

According to the Office for National Statistics The percentage of disposable income saved rose from 9.6% to 29.1% This was more than double the previous record of 14.4% set in 1993Clearly there are lots of people that have been impacted financially and emotionally by the Covid lockdown but despite some horrible events this last year, there are some positives and this could be that more people are looking at their income and outgoings and making changes. I have a lot of client ask me about helping their children or grandchildren during the current Covid situation. Many of the wealthy baby boomers are looking to pass on their wealth to less financially secure millennials at a time when they are in need of some financial assistance. This is accelerating what has come to be known as the greatest wealth transfer in UK history. Its thought that over the next 10 years, £300bn could be passed from one generation to the next.In this solo episode I am going to look at ways that money can be gifted to remove or reduce any potential inheritance tax issues in the future. The content should not be relied upon in its entirety and shall not be deemed to be, or constitute advice. In this bitesize episode, which I recorded while out on my run, I talk about why you should start a savings habit.Having savings will give you peace of mind and will allow you to have choices and take advantage of opportunities as they arise. The last year has shown us that there is a need to have an emergency fund that we can fall back on if we need to and perhaps its shown that the emergency fund needs to be more than just a couple of months worth of outgoings. Being able to save now will also help you prepare for a future when you start to look to work less and enjoy life more. Commonly this is seen as the standard retirement age however, it doesn't have to be. Retirement doesn't have to be at age 65 or older, you just need to have a source of income to replace a salary. The content should not be relied upon in its entirety and shall not be deemed to be, or constitute advice.
