Welcome to the Live Less Afraid podcast, where your host Michele Jones explores what makes us happy and what we waste emotional energy on. Today I will walk you through a couple of exercises to help you discover how and why we waste energy on things beyond our control or that do not serve any purpose in our lives. I’ll also share how these impact our decisions to live in joy and happiness, why we need to discover those things, and how to start doing the work to get there.
Here are a few examples of ways we waste energy instead of focusing on what makes us happy and doing that.
Dwelling on the past: Spending too much time thinking about the mistakes we made or the things have done differently in thepast can be a huge emotional drain. It's important to learn from the past but not get stuck in it.
Comparing ourselves to others: Constantly comparing ourselves to others can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. It's important to focus on our own journey and progress, rather than constantly looking at what others are doing.
Worrying about the future: While it's important to plan for the future, worrying too much about what may or may not happen can be exhausting and counterproductive. It's important to focus on the present moment and take things one step at a time.
Holding grudges: Holding onto grudges and negative feelings towards others can consume a lot of emotional energy and prevent us from moving forward. It's important to practice forgiveness and let go of any negativity that's weighing us down.
Overthinking: Overanalyzing situations and trying to anticipate every possible outcome can be mentally exhausting. It'simportant to trust our instincts and not get bogged down in endless analysis.
By being aware of these emotional energy drains, we can work towards minimizing their impact on our lives andfocusing our energy on things that truly matter. Trust that everything works out for you, work on your mindset, and shift your thoughts to things thatserve us.

Here's the 5 tips:
1. Practice self-care
Self-confidence and self-care are often closely linked. Move your body, get good sleep, eating well can all make you feel better about yourself.
Taking time to assess your needs can help you to identify what makes you feel good about yourself. Practice mindfulness and gratitude can also help to reduce stress, and improve emotion regulation
2. Build positive relationships
Those who are negative and try to bring you down can often drain your confidence. Aim to build relationships with people who appreciate you. Their positivity can help you to feel more confident. I also would encourage you to look at what you allow into your life – like negative social media, news, the kind of books you read can all impact you.
3. Work on a growth mindset
Some research shows that those with a growth mindset tend to have higher self-esteem and resilience than those with a fixed mindset.
4. Challenge yourself
Set yourself a challenge to help build confidence. Although it’s natural to be nervous about trying new things, those with confidence will take on the challenge regardless.
They also recommend setting goals, which can help with forming new behaviors, giving focus, and starting to make gradual progress.
5. Practice self-affirmations
Various studies have shown the power of affirmations. Essentially, by telling yourself about your strengths and how confident you are, you can reinforce these positive thoughts. One particular study demonstrates that self-affirmations can help to maintain our self-efficacy, which is a key component of confidence.
Other studies have shown that neural pathways in the brain respond when people practice self-affirmations.
Some examples of positive affirmations for confidence include:

The anxiety, the happiness and the anger. I share a gentle reminder to allow it in- however it comes and to embrace those parts of ourselves. To go with the flow.

1 TBSP olive oil
1 cup chopped or shredded lettuce
1/2 avocado
1/4 thinly sliced grapefruit
1 chopped cucumber
1 celery stalk (chopped)
1/4 cup nuts of your choice
5-6 mint leaves
3 watermelon radishes (optional)
4oz cooked chicken or protein of your choice
Dressing:
Juice of one large grapefruit
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
1 shallot (onion)
1 garlic clove
4-5 mint leaves
1/3 cup olive oil
Dash of sea salt

Here's a little bit of encouragement and hope when you need to start over and how to give yourself grace and be kind to yourself and silence your inner mean girl. We need a reminder that we can always start something, or try again when something doesn't go the way you expect it. It is an opportunity to learn and accept that a failure or a mistake is just that- and not a reflection on who we are.
This is how we grow and learn and change. Trust that you are where you are supposed to be today and recognize how far you've come. Look what you have built for yourself. Love yourself for the work you have done.

So many times, things happen in our life, we chalk them up to coincidences, or to luck or chance. Today I am here to blow that out of the water. It is all being orchestrated; we just need to pay better attention to the signs. The Universe or God or whoever or whatever you think is running this show has got your back. She wants to align and give and create and allow and make space for all. the. things. we. desire. in this life! But we have to do our part, we have to focus on those things, we have to share those dreams with people we can trust. Allow people to help you, it’s how the universe works. Pay attention to the signs! Listen every day. Then take action and watch what happens! Give the universe permission to bring what you want to you.

On today's episode, I cover the reasons why we need to trust the power of the timing in our lives. Why it is so important that we get out of our own way, that we let go of fear and control, and learn to lean into the right here and now. To be in the present moment of knowing that we are in the Universe or God's divine timing. That even when we feel frustrated that things aren't happening when and how we want them- there is a plan! Don't lose your hope that it is coming! Keep your enthusiasm!

This morning I’m up early and I am examining what my habits have become. I’ve been telling myself for a long time that I am not a morning person. What I’ve noticed though is that it doesn’t really feel true when I am up in the morning. So today I am talking about that and how we can move closer to what feels true today. To tune into what feels right for us. To recognize that we can change and grow and take a look at what we do and examine if it still serves us.

I want to share something with you today, like a mantra or prayer.
Are you ready?
I receive all these great gifts, the co-create to manifest, to have choices, to have freedom, I choose to raise my vibration, and I choose to raise the vibration of others around me. I let joy and peace and meaningful conversations lead my life today. I choose to be kind and loving in my relationships.
So on today's episode, I want to talk about generational trauma. Now, if you Google this you will find that there are there's not a lot of scientific data out there around it. But I know I have seen this play out, not just in my own lives, but in the lives of other people. That you know their dad a certain way or their moms a certain way and their grandma. There's a certain way you know their uncles a certain way.
And I believe that we carry that stuff with us, whatever it is. And you know, if I think back to even to my great grandmother. I can pinpoint that fear and anxiety and worry and controlling things goes back to her. It starts with being a little kid and not feeling safe or not feeling loved or not feeling worthy. And you know, tough talk like I raised two kids, and I know they struggle with some of those things.
It's generational, like I learned that behavior from someone else and they learned it from me, and so the reason why I wanted to talk about it today is because you know, they say the first step to overcoming something right is recognizing that there is something to overcome so.
I've been having a lot of conversations with my kids about this because I'm like, you know, this is our opportunity to break this cycle so that going forward, you know your kids, your kids as kids, whatever, will not carry the same stuff that you've been carrying that I've been carrying.
So I just think it's really important that we look at that and we figure out what those behaviors are that we're carrying with us, and make a conscious decision to work towards changing that.
So if you're listening and that resonates with you. I just want you to say to yourself that's not me anymore, and that's not going to be for my kids and my kids as kids. We're going to change the music on that. We're going to change the tune. We're going to do it different because we know, right and I love love, love that saying too where like you can't UN know something like once you learn you can't you can't turn away from. It if you know, it's like oh no, I know that and I have to work on it and it's going to be hard. But you know it's going to be OK, and there's lots of people that can support you on that journey. I'm one of those people I know lots of other awesome coaches that do this work. And you know, surround yourself with good people. In your family and family does not mean blood, we all know that family can be you know people that have just been with you forever. You know friends that are family, that kind of stuff. But get yourself a good support group support circle you know and commit to working through that stuff not just for yourself and not just for your parents and grandparents but for future generations.

Uhm, you know, it's funny. I don't think I ever felt safe at home when I was a little kid and I have like these really crazy memories of being alone and looking for my mom. My mom was an alcoholic. She's no longer with us, but you know, I think that she had a lot going on and there were times that I she just couldn't be there for me. And I don't tell you that you know for sympathy or for aggrandizing, I tell you that because of what it taught me. And how I've used those skills in life and I'm sure that you can relate to this. I'm sure if you're listening to this right now and you went through a similar situation when you were a kid. And you also recognized that it made you independent, right?
And it made you resilient like tough, tough on the outside. I like to say right and resourceful, like I had to be a resourceful kid. I had to figure things out because there wasn't anybody there like kind of showing me the way. But you know the other thing it did too was, because of the kind of the fear and the chaos that I was around, I really learned to play it safe like I really learned to do a really good look good on the outside but inside I was terrified, like terrified I was. Scared of everything, and I was a worrier. I was such a worrier, you know. You know, I still worry I still slip back into that behavior absolutely, but I think now like I'm just more aware of it and I'm just able to see it for what it is, right?
It was something that served me. At one point in my life, but doesn't serve me anymore, right and uhm? Epic Bones, which is this gal who's an artist. She has this great picture that she drew of her like cradling fear and saying hey thanks bud, thanks for you know-helping me out all those times, but I'm OK now and I don't need you anymore and that is today how I like to feel. But you know the fear and the worry and anxiety like it served me. It served me at one point, and it served me for a long time in my adulthood. But today it just doesn't serve me anymore and there's just other things I want to be doing with my energy. And as you think about where you are today, and if you're struggling with those things, I just want to encourage you to maybe have a little conversation with little you and the big scary fear. And our shadow self and say listen like OK I see you I see you Boo, and I see what you did for me, and I see how you protected me and kept me safe. But today.
Today I get to choose. Today I get to choose that I don't have to be ruled by that anymore. It doesn't have to have the driving wheel, right. Jesus take the wheel. It doesn't have to be the driver, right? I can be the driver. Fear can sit in the back seat. Worry can sit in the front seat if it wants, but they don't have to drive right? We can make those choices. We can make decisions today that lead from a place of love and light and realize that there is so much more that we can achieve that we can embrace so much more love and you know, just by saying, I recognize that you're there. OK and then just allowing it to be and realizing that it doesn't have to be this consuming piece of our life anymore, right? So, I'm just going to leave you with that right now.

What's the longest you've ever stuck with something? Is it your marriage? Is it a job? Is it an exercise routine? I've been talking about this, but I'm doing 100-day challenge. And while it's not the thing that maybe I've stuck with the longest. I've been thinking a lot about what it means. To say to yourself, I'm going to commit to doing this thing, whatever it is. For 100 days. And my friend Leanne Brennan, who organized this challenge over at Epic Bones said “think about what you're becoming as part of this challenge. Who do you want to be after you've completed it?” And so, I've been thinking a lot about that, and I woke up this morning thinking about taking action about just starting and I heard someone else this week talk about that too. That sometimes we just need to start whatever it is that we're. We want to do some sometimes just getting out of the gate. Even though we may not have all the answers, we may not know the right direction. I like the idea of figuring out what it means to show up for myself in this way and to show up for you guys and be here and talk about things that I think are important and I just hope that it resonates with you, that it resonates with one person, that all of this work that I'm doing to show up and talk about living less afraid you know, means something to someone out there, because I think that then it feels like it's all worth it. Like seriously, even if it's just one person that says that helped me or I can relate to what you're saying or thanks for making me not feel like I was alone in this. When I was back in college, I remember I had a writing professor who turned me on to this guy named William Cronon and he talked about that a lot about what it means to be a well-rounded individual. And he said really, at the at the end of the day, like all that we're supposed to be doing is connecting with each other like that's the whole purpose of us being here. You know? Is just to connect and like reach out and you know say hey you are doing OK over there? Can I hold your hand? Can I walk with you on this path a little bit? And justice help that's what we're supposed to be doing here. I have always had that on my heart, like forever and ever. As long as I can remember, I've always been a helper and I've always been a giver. And I just like to show up and say, hey, I got you. So, if you're listening this morning:
I got you girl, whatever it is. Whatever you're thinking about right now, whatever you're going through, just know that I'm here on the other end of. This conversation, holding space for you, holding you up. Believing in you. Encouraging you, pushing you to do. The things that you want to do to be the person you want to be to go to. The places you want to go. So, when you think about challenging yourself to do something. Think about what it means to you. Who did you want to become? Where it is you think you want to go? And then just start. And remember that really at the end of the day, it's only about connecting with people. That's all that's important.

I wake up every morning and I try to do a little personal development work before I start my day. Right now I'm reading, "Women, Food & God by Janine Roth. I first learned about this book from one of my mentors, Cathy Heller. And this morning I was reading the the chapter called, Tiger in the Mind and she talks a lot about Inquiry in this chapter and what I mean by that is she talks about asking ourselves to get quiet and think about what's really going on in our bodies. How do we feel? Do we feel sad? Where is that sadness? And one of the things she wrote that really struck me this morning and I'm an underliner in a book. I don't know if you guys do that with the books that you read, but I do. I underlined this sentence when she was talking about. "Our feelings in our bodies and how we react to it. And when we feel uncomfortable, what it means? In an attempt not to feel what is uncomfortable, the mind will often rant and ramble and tell us how awful it all is. Here's some examples of what you might hear. This pain will never end. This sadness will overwhelm me. If I let myself feel it, I will not be able to function." Those words as I read them this morning, really struck me. It's just our minds like to tell us these crazy things and then our body associate's a feeling or an emotion with that. And we take that as gospel and it's just not true. What I invite you to do and what Janine's inviting us to do, is to sit in our bodies. And really, pay attention to whatever that unsettledness feeling is and just notice it. And like my therapist says, don't judge the judging like let it just be there and say, oh, I feel kind of sad today. I wonder why I feel that way. It's not the end of the world, it's just a feeling. It's going to pass. But I wonder what that's about that's interesting. I'm not going to go eat a whole pizza right now. I'm just going to notice that I'm kind of feeling a little sad. So I would invite you the next time you feel like an overwhelming negative dialogue going on inside your head or some overwhelming feelings that you just stop for a minute and take a breath and close your eyes and tune in to your body. Your physical body. And think about where are you feeling that is it in your throat? I feel a lot of my stuff in my throat. Is it in your belly? Is it in your chest? Is it in your shoulders? Is it in your head? I think knowing is the first part right to understanding how our crazy brains work, because our brains are crazy girls. Let me tell you. It will just fire and wire that same feeling and emotion over and over again. And if we let ourselves stay stuck in that, there's no movement, there's no way to move forward. And that does sound black and white but there's real evidence to support that. There's also real evidence that shows us that when we pivot and pay attention to what's really happening in our bodies and pay attention to our thoughts and retrain those. That real progress can be made. That real change can be made. And that joy and peace and. Zest for life can be found in the new way that we've not imagined. And so I want to leave you with that today if you are fighting yourself. On the struggle bus and you're feeling really strong emotions about something. Take a pause. Take a break. Do it right now if you need to pull the car over or press pause on this and go sit down, go in the bathroom and close the door for your parents. You need 5 minutes. Lock the door. Go to that quiet place. Take some deep breaths and think about what it is you're actually feeling in your body. And then just allow it to be there. I'm not asking you to like solve World Peace, I'm just asking you to notice what's going on in your body and be aware of it. This morning I was reading my devotional by Thich Nhat Hanh. You might have heard of him or seen him on the Oprah show. Actually, that's where I first saw him. He's just this little, Monk man who speaks these crazy simple ideas, but when you really think about it, they are profound. This morning's message was about coming home to ourselves. What he was saying was don't forget to come home to yourself. Don't forget to let go of the outwardly distractions and settle back inside yourself and take a few deep breaths and just remember that all that stuff out there doesn't have to impact what happens inside inside of us. That we get to choose. You know, we get to choose how how we react and whenever we feel a little out of control or maybe circumstances feel like they're getting away from us. We can come home. We can take a minute and we can come home to ourselves. And we can just settle in. And realize that we have all the answers right inside ourselves, right inside our hearts right inside our minds that we can choose, that we can create, that we can find peace. Just by coming home to ourselves. So this morning, If you're struggling or your brain turned on and it was just already thinking about all the things, all the stuff, all of the appointments, all of the responsibilities that you have to do today. I want to leave you with this thought. Just come home. Just come home to yourself and take a few minutes And just enjoy being with yourself. Love yourself. Settle in with yourself. Let's say, I got this. Whatever happens out there today. I know that on the inside I can come home anytime I want. I can get centered, I can get grounded. And I can remember that I'm worthy and that I'm loved and that I'm capable.

Wayne Dyer said, “when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”. On this episode, I talk about friction and how we can sometimes look at what’s happening around us and blame others for how we feel. The reality is we are the only ones who get to decide how we feel. Reframing the way I look at things helps me raise my energy level and stay out of the low level energy around blaming. I say assume best intentions and I mean that. I also know that even though I may assume that, there are people out there who do not have best intentions at heart. For those people I say, have good boundaries!!

On this episode I share my thoughts on being critical of ourselves and those around us. I am a recovering perfectionist and I am always looking for ways to be softer and kinder to myself and those around me. Today I focus on how compassion can help us have grace towards ourselves and others. Repeat this mantra: "I give you loving kindness" Use this as a tool to begin to let go of our criticisms. Watching how we embrace criticisms and how that affects our energy and our growth. When we can let go of that, we raise our vibration, we feel better, we focus on what is good and not the negative. We also have to work to break that cycle of criticism against ourselves and others. Our brains want to fire and wire the same thoughts over and over again. So if we are stuck in a critic mindset- that is what we see and do and focus on. So if we work to rewire that thought and focus on compassion and loving kindness towards ourselves and others, we can change that narrative. I also talk about how we can love our physical body, and be grateful for it AS IT IS.
I encourage you to take an inventory of how you can show yourself loving kindness. I also encourage you to start rewiring your thoughts.

Feeling stuck part 2. This topic came up again for me and I wanted to share what was on my heart. What do you do with that energy when you feel stuck, down, or in a funk? Last week on the bonus episode I talked about finding joy and feeling stuck or in a funk can steal that joy. I want to share how checking into my body and asking what is really going on with me. For me it means I need to check in and ask where am I selling myself short? Or where am I letting myself down? What does that make me say or thin k about me? Love yourself first, and make sure you are being true to you and what you really want. Are you saying no to something you should have said “no” to? Maybe it’s the opposite, it wasn’t a hell yes, and you said yes to it and that’s why you feel out of alignment. Make sure you are walking in your truth.

On today's episode, I get to interview my daughter in law! I have one son, so for a long time I've been asking the universe to bring my son a partner that I could love as much as I do my own children. When I met Khelen, I knew she was that person. One of the many things we have in common is our struggle with fears and anxieties. So when I started my work with Live Less Afraid, Khelen asked to be a part of the podcast. I am honored she is sharing her story and today we talked about what it means to discover your feelings have a name. That you are not alone if you are an HSP. How she copes with it, stays in tune with it and why embracing who we are is important and vital to our survival. She also shares a sweet story about leaning in to the intuitiveness that comes with being an HSP. We also talk about how people who are supporting HSP's can do that. If you are interested in learning more about HSP's or taking the assessment to see if you are also an HSP and maybe never put a name to it. Check out the links here ->. Take the assessment here https://hsperson.com/test/highly-sensitive-test/ and here's a link to the author, Elaine N. Aron's bookstore. https://hsperson.com/store/bookstore/. I'm also taking notes on your ideas for having fun and hanging on to joy!

Well the holiday weekend got away from me but hey I'm human and life is allowed to get in the way once in awhile. It's episode #20 you guys! I know it doesn't seem like a huge milestone, but I believe in celebrating even small successes. You shown up, I've shown up. I haven't done that many solo episodes, so I'd be interested to know what you think. Drop me a note. In this episode, I talk about wading in to the river and what that means for us on this journey to Live Less Afraid. I also talk about how we can embrace “going with the flow” and shake off being resistance. I share that I struggle with the fear and anxiety, but I also love to dream about the what if, and just letting go and stay in the river and where it takes you. We have to get out of own way and do what our next right step is. Stay right there, and just do that. You don’t have to solve all the world’s problems in one day, our job is to stay right here, in the moment. Take a minute and feel the cool river and what 1 degree shift you could make today? Think on that for 1 minute, then later I want you to meditate on it for 1 minute. Then later I want you to journal on it for 1 minute. Then after all of that you can be brave and share with me the one thing you decided on for today. Breathe it in and feel the air in your lungs and let it out slowly. Just take that one step. The only person I need to be true to is yourself. Repeat this over and over again. I want to let you in on a little secret, if you are true to you, the rest of life will take care of itself. Come home to ourselves, figure out who you want to be, what we want in life. It’s ok to meditate on this. In fact, it’s necessary. Think about the river, its always changing, its always moving, it’s always looking for that evolution, for that next bend. If you want to be true to yourself, if you want to show up and live less afraid then let’s get together. Let’s have a discovery call or jump into one of my free monthly workshops. Visit my IG page and check out all the things there in my bio. Working with you would be such an honor. I hope this helps you on your journey. On today’s bonus episode I share what’s on my heart around asking for help. It’s not how I am wired, but it is a beautiful, sweet surrender in asking for help. The other beautiful piece is allowing someone to help you. I share today that I am struggling with my feelings around my mentally ill brother. He’s in crisis at the moment. It’s really a struggle to reach out and get the support I need, and yet I know I need to lean on my support right now. Sometimes just standing with someone who is going through something hard is all that is needed. It also brings up feelings up anxiety and not being able to control this situation. I have to hold him in the space that is safe and see him as being protected, held and cared for. I have to practice what I preach and Live Less Afraid and step back and let go so my tender heart can be protected. If you are struggling today and need support, reach out to someone, reach out to me, tell someone. Get the help you need to live less afraid. We have to breathe through the tough times and push back against the shadow self. Recenter on a hard topic over and over again if needed. I hope this helps you on your journey. On this episode, you get to hear me talk about how we hang on to things that keep us stuck. I also talk about how we need to get ready in our mind, body and spirit. Where we can say we are ready for what's next for us in our life. That we need to open ourselves up to what's to come. Call in that goodness. Call in what is next for us. We just have to get out of the way and let go of our own limiting beliefs. There is so much evidence to support this, if we look at what's already happened to us in our lives. I want to encourage you to be brave enough to stand in the conviction of knowing that there is good things coming for us. We can claim healing for ourselves and our families. We can be the thread that repairs our families, we just have to be open the possibilities. Say yes, and call it in! We can be that excited, that hopeful, that expectant. We cards have we dealt ourselves? And more importantly, what are our dreams? What do we really want to do? Let's work the problem, how can we get there? When self doubt creeps in, and the stories we tell ourselves. We can make amazing things happen, when we decide to. Don't tell me your dream is too hard or too high. It is hard, but is it not impossible. We just have to get really clear and intentional about what we want and how it feels. It is not our job to figure out the how, we just have to know where we are going. On this bonus episode I talk about “inquiry” the practice of sitting with ourselves and asking, “how am I feeling?” and “where do I feel it in my body?” and notice what is happening. Just sitting with those feelings. Knowing is the first part to understanding why we do the things we do. We can’t begin to make real change if we don’t first acknowledge and become aware. Real change can come from this.

Natalie Mesbah is a Certified Hypnotherapist and Rapid Transformational Therapist (RTT) who focuses on using the power of the mind to unleash the power of the self. Throughout the course of her life, Natalie noticed the reoccurring themes of female empowerment and self-esteem materializing and though she did not feel like she was capable of doing anything momentous with these powerful forms of consciousness, she did feel drawn to them. Natalie battled her own disempowered beliefs about her capabilities and direction in life which led to a huge amount of pain and tears that could not be stopped with any amount of effort. She came to realize that this was an attack on her self-worth and was not going to waste the rest of her life living out the same cycles and created a community incase a tribe of ladies wanted to come with. It was when Natalie booked her own RTT session and she experienced the power of hypnosis, plus the ability to re-write our subconscious blueprint, that the reoccurring themes of female empowerment and self-esteem made sense. Natalie now helps other women identify and eliminate the subconscious beliefs that limit them from knowing their true worth and having their heart’s desires.
