In this episode Matt and I chat over how years of using and abusing his body eventually led him to yoga where he explored his curiosity for understanding his unique path to feeling better.
About Matt
Yoga instructor Matt Giordano gives credit to an influential figure from his teenage years – his high school art teacher – for sparking within him the curiosity and tenacity that eventually led him to yoga. It was Eileen Walk who told Giordano, “You are not allowed to say ‘I can’t.’ You must rephrase to a question: ‘How?'”
That inquisitive and unrelenting spirit laid the foundation for Matt to begin a devoted yoga practice. When coupled with his passion to understand the physics and subtle alignment of the body, Matt’s dharma as a teacher came into focus.
Originally from Sea Cliff, Long Island, Giordano spent 7 years developing his teaching style while living in Manhattan, where he taught at local studios (Pure NYC, Equinox). Matt now travels internationally to teach his signature technique-based style of yoga, educating yoga students on how to use their bodies in a profound and life-changing way. Well known for his ability to guide students deeply into postures with his refined attention to detail and precise action cues, Giordano is an adept guide for students of all levels at festivals, workshops, and in his weekly studio classes. His study of biomechanics and integrative mind-body techniques informs his teaching, as he draws upon wisdom from traditions of yoga, martial arts (Aikido and Tae Kwon Do), acrobatics, AcroYoga, and Thai Yoga Massage. Matt is known to inspire humble confidence, allowing students to find ease while expanding the edge of their comfort zones.
In 2016, Matt created and founded an international school of yoga that focuses on community, growth and authentic teaching, and he hosts trainings each year out of his home in northwest Connecticut.

Welcome to part 2 of episode 29 on the “Love at First Science'' Podcast where Jenna Leser speaks to slowing the aging process through her research on bone density.
Do you know the importance of bone density for your overall health? Jenna Leser is a Pd.D. student in molecular medicine and she shares her findings related to bone density on the podcast. She explains the various functions the bones serve, how they adapt to the daily challenges and how to improve bone density. She points out what effects exercise and diet have on bone mass, what changes occur when becoming older and what it takes to grow bone mass when aging. She depicts how important gravity and using force within exercises is and details how important the homeostatic set point is. In addition she shares how to preserve bone density, the importance of progressively increasing the strength and load you are putting the body through, and how critical variety is. In sharing her journey and connecting her research to yoga and movement she stresses the importance of increasing bone density in a simple and understanding manner.
Learn More About Jenna Leser:
Originally from New York, I moved to Maryland to attend Johns Hopkins University where I graduated with a Bachelor's in Biology and a minor in Bioethics. My interest in biological sciences and how the body functions led me to become a research technician in neuro-gastroenterology at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institute upon graduation in 2015. In 2017 I enrolled in (and am now wrapping up soon!), a Ph.D. in Molecular Medicine, with a focus on Cellular and Molecular Physiology, at the University of Maryland Baltimore. I train in the Department of Orthopaedics under the mentorship of Dr. Joseph Stains, Ph.D. and my studies investigate the function of osteocytes, cells that reside inside the hard, calcified bone itself. We are continuing to expand our understanding of osteocytes as regulators of bone formation/resorption in response to hormonal, biochemical, and mechanical cues, with a special interest in the context of aging. As a former gymnast, dancer, pole vaulter, and field hockey player - I have had my fair share of exposure to orthopedics as a patient, so finding a research home in this department feels full circle. In an attempt to mitigate the stress of doctoral studies and get back to my roots as an athlete, I began my relationship with yoga. I completed my 200hr RYT in 2019 after 2 years of committed practice and started my yoga teaching journey. It brings me so much joy to weave my passion for physiology into each class I teach.

Hello my name is Garrett. I was born, raised, and have lived in beautiful Orange County of Southern California for over 30 years. Since elementary school I’ve known that I’ve wanted to be an educator. Almost every person in my family has worked in education as school teachers and administrators, so you can say that teaching is in my blood. At first I thought I would make a great History teacher, but my path quickly diverged into the realm of anatomy, biomechanics, & neuroscience.
For over the past 5 years I have been overjoyed to share my continuously growing knowledge of the human body. I have always had a passion for helping and inspiring others, which stemmed from my previous jobs as an ocean lifeguard and as a tutor. Today I work to helps others through lectures, personalized tutoring, & as a Doctor of Chiropractic.
A lot of my work and care come from the techniques and systems I have had the honor of studying. I am inspired and utilize Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS Part A & B), Functional Range Conditioning (FRC & FRA), I teach Yoga & Kinstretch, and am a senior writer for the online magazine Shut Up & Yoga.
I strongly believe that everyone has the capability to learn about and master their own anatomy, explore functional and fundamental movements that better both life & athletic performance, and continue to adapt & grow stronger to help manage what ever life throws at them.
I share a lot of free content and lead discussions on my Instagram & Facebook Page. I also post yoga classes on my Youtube.
Part of my mission is to deliver high quality & well informed information in what I post in an effort to help others have access to this easily.
I personally have benefited a lot from what others share and I plan to keep my content free for the foreseeable future.

Welcome to episode 2 of the “Neuroscience series” on the Love at First Science Podcast where Dr. Sarah Mc Kay shares her extensive research on the female’s brain resulted in the publication of her book Demystifying the female brain. Topics covered:
Learn More About Dr. Sarah Mc Kay!
I’m an Australian-based (Kiwi born and bred) neuroscientist, speaker, author, media personality and founder of Think Brain and the Neuroscience Academy suite of training programs. I’m a mum to two boys, sailor (co-captaincy shared with husband), botanical artist and ocean swimmer. I explain the brain to helping professionals so they can coach brain-owners in a way that promotes real change and inspires positive action. Brain science and I first met and fell in love way back in 1993 after I read Oliver Sack’s book ‘The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat’. It impacted me profoundly and from that moment I knew little else would fascinate me more than the human brain. After completing an honours degree in Neuroscience at Otago University in New Zealand, I won a Wellcome Trust scholarship to complete my MSc and PhD at Oxford University (where, thrillingly, I followed in Oliver Sacks’ footsteps). I spent my time at Oxford studying the fine art of electrophysiology and answering questions about brain development — what guided synapse growth: nature, nurture or neuroplasticity?’ In 2002, my Irish husband and I headed to Sydney, Australia in search of sunshine, surf and a sailboat (for a year, ahem). I’m delighted to say we found them all (and stayed)! Following a short stint rewriting breast cancer clinical practice guidelines at a cancer council, I spent the next five years researching and teaching neuroscience. During my first postdoc position at NeuRA, I focused on the immune system response to spinal cord injury. At my second postdoc post at Garvan Institute of Medical Research, I looked at neuroplasticity and the development of deafness. Passionate as I was about research, I found myself getting frustrated with failed experiments, the grant application merry-go-round, and the unbearable slowness of the academic publication process. Meanwhile, I found my happy place sharing science with public tour groups, teaching medical students, and writing for online science Q&A forums (back in the good old days before social media!). So after much soul-searching, I put down the pipette, hung up my lab coat, and followed my passion of writing and talking about science and medicine.

Feel unsupported without consciously engaging your core? Wanting to dive deeper into why you don’t need to always grip and squeeze your core? Mike Golden shares his journey with injuries from contact sports, how his rehabilitation journey shifted to simultaneously addressing higher order brain systems, and how his journey got him to where he is today. Inspite of his journey, Mike explains how the visual and vestibular systems affect posture, movement patterns, athleticism, decisions, and metabolic dysfunction, and how optimal plasticity requires a combination of brain-based drills and muscular work. Using A GPS analogy, Mike discusses core engagement, when conscious core engagement may be appropriate, and how the ultimate goal is unconscious core engagement. By explaining the two types of unconscious core engagement that facilitate movement, Mike presents the function of the core, the power of perturbation in training a reflexive and responsive core, and how shifting the movement goal to change awareness is highly beneficial. Unsure how to teach the core? Wondering how important is core engagement in Yoga? Intention is everything. Diana kicks off the podcast addressing the cues that need to be revised and why they aren't as helpful as we once thought. Then, Diana breaks down the core biomechanics behind plank pose, the importance of the core and diaphragm, and potential compensations that occur with an inefficient core. Futhermore, she explains the pressure system through different postural positions, whether alignment in Yoga matters, if engaging the core 30% is needed, and how to find that 30% activation. Moreover, Diana speaks into the diaphragm and describes its link with several systems on the body. She speaks into how to shift the language, in Yoga cueing, around the core, and how the Threes PhysioYoga method embraces that education. Finally, she shares her biggest takeaway in life.
Topics Covered:
What needs to be changed in the Yoga world?
What’s the deal with plank position?
Excursion of the core
Could you overwork the legs and core due to lack of core strength?
What is happening in the core with anatomical neutral?

Should we be engaging the core 30%?
Meditating on the movement of the diaphragm and pelvic floor
The diaphragm hits more than just breathing

Join Patrick McKweon, peak performance trainer, scientist, therapist, and author, and I as we dive into the fundamental concepts of how to breathe correctly, and why we should be breathing in a certain way These concepts are highly mis-understood in the general population and world of fitness. We touch on how nasal breathing relates to topics of sleep apnea, chronic exhaustion, anxiety, recovery, blood circulation, cognitive excellence, and the female menstrual cycle. Through these topics, Patrick provides the biochemical rationale behind training air hunger, CO2 tolerance, and vagus stimulation, providing strategies to help enhance oxygen utilization. We touch base on the core biomechanics and how nasal breathing relates to core synergy. Patrick dives into asthma and other inflammatory conditions, and how nasal breathing has profound anti-inflammatory effects in the body, Furthermore, Patrick describes breathing through exercise and its profound benefits. Through the body's ability to adapt, Patrick addresses how to breath train as a means of improving functional breathing patterns, or as a means providing acute stress. Finally, Patrick unveils the importance of nitric oxide, especially int he content of immune function, and the mouth breathing epidemic amongst children. James Nestor and I talk all about how breathing relates to anatomy and physiology. As an automatic and unconscious practice, we never really take the time to understand breathing and appreciate it, yet it is one of the most vital contributors to the efficacy of all the systems in our body and how well they work together. Fundementally, James Nestor talks into addressing the root cause, which in many cases is the breath, when approaching pathologies within the body. James Nestor briefly explains the mechanics of nasal breathing, its physiological effects, and the mis-directed conceptions around mouth breathing and performance!
We dive into over-breathing and the oxygen-carbon dioxide balance, the humility when having to decrease intensity to accomodate nasal breathing, and the evolutionary consequences of mouth breathing. Moreover, we discuss the root cause of snoring, Oropharyngeal exercises, the technique of mouth sleeping, mouth dryness, diseases from acidity in the mouth, and sobering up when hyperventilating. Using the fundamental concept of our brains trying to keep us alive, James hones in on adaptation and dives into deviated septums, jaw and palate development, teeth development nasal surgeries, allergies, and the close links between ADHD and sleep disorders. We hope to shift common binary perspectives around breathing into a more systemic perspective on the integrity within the body. Look better, breathe better, develop better by nasal breathing.
