It's that time again and for this episode, we are chatting about one of the most deceptively beautiful birds that come to our area in the Fall, the cedar waxwing. These social birds are mostly seen invading fruit trees and flying from tree to tree in large flocks. Upon a closer look, these brown blobs suddenly reveal an amazingly beautiful bird. With beautiful coloration, a crest on its head, and a bold black mask, these birds reveal a ravenous appetite for fruit! After a little hiatus and celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, we're back! We had a great time celebrating with friends and family, but are happy to be back in the podcast studio! This episode is about some strange plants that you may have seen, but maybe didn't know what they were. Hey everyone and welcome back to Walkin' on the Wild Side! We finish up our three part series on the local legends of South Carolina with one of Gabrielle's favorite legends of the Lowcountry, the Gray Man. This legend is a prognosticator of hurricanes and landfall, often protecting the person and property he reveals himself to. The legend started in the 1800's in Pawley's Island, SC and has persisted to this day. There are different versions, but all have a similar outcome. A person sees a gray man in an overcoat and hat, he warns them to flee the impending storm, and their homes are spared, even when everything around them is devastated. Join Gabrielle and I in Pawley's Island, close to where the legend was born, and then join us for dinner as we talk to a local young man, Chandler, who happened to be our waiter at the amazing Rustic Table restaurant. It's time for another episode of Walkin' on the Wild Side and we are road trippin' for part 2 of our "Local Legends of South Carolina" series! This time, we're up in Union County, where a local legend is well known by folks in the area, but maybe not known outside of this area of South Carolina. Goshen Hill Plantation was the site of a settlement where a man was wrongfully hanged for a murder he didn't commit, and both he and his faithful dog were executed in a wrongful rush to judgment. Scary stories of a white dog with a hideous grin that haunts this area of Union county have been told for years and a simple drive along Old Buncombe Road can really get your imagination going! Join Gabrielle and I along this stretch and a few more places as we search for the Hound of Goshen Hill, secretly praying that we DON'T see him!

Our first part takes us east of Columbia near Camden. While out on a road trip that included Buc-ee's and Swan Lake in Sumter, I wanted to share the location of our first local legend in the Scape Ore Swamp of Bishopville. It's time for another episode and this time, we're talking about a bird that is so often heard but not seen. Often called rain crows, due to being heard calling before approaching storms, these birds get a bad rap as nest parasites, but our yellow billed cuckoos don't that that too often. Join us on the backporch, along with the lightning bugs, chucks, whippoorwills, and even a screech owl stops by, all to listen and learn about the cuckoos. I guess you can say they are also cuckoo for cuckoos!

While sitting on the porch last night, preparing to record another episode, we heard chuck-wils-widows and whippoorwills calling and thought, why record another episode when we can bring back a blast from the past and re-post "Goatsuckers Galore", one of our first podcasts from 2021! Hey everyone, it's time for another episode of Walkin' on the Wild Side Podcast! For this episode, we're ringing in Spring with the bells, the OCONEE BELLS (Shortia galacifolia)! Spring has sprung, as you learned from our last episode. However, it wouldn't be spring without the Oconee Bells! This beautiful but small wildflower is one of the earliest blooming spring ephemerals in the Appalachians, is quite rare but locally abundant, and has a very interesting discovery story. It was actually discovered, lost, and re-discovered a CENTURY later, but not by a famous naturalist of the day. Our final two days in Iceland are packed adventures and experiences as we go from Selfloss to Keflavik. We went through a National Park, experienced a few more waterfalls, geysers, and interesting history. We also baked bread in volcanic soil, took in a few more spas, and got up close and personal at the historic fissure and lava eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula. We're back for another episode of Walkin' on the Wild Side! It's the time of year that we are starting to get hints of Fall and many animal behaviors are starting to change with the seasons. Birds are migrating, squirrels are getting busy, but I always thing of the industrious beaver this time of year! The careful observer who has beavers in the area will notice more activity from these semi-aquatic mammals as they start caching twigs, branches, and other food for the winter. But beavers get a bad rap because of their ability to change their habitat and are much maligned in many areas. But it's this ability that creates habitat, improves water quality, and can be beneficial to our environment if we can just find a way to get along with this neat critter. Join Marvin and Gabrielle as we seek to instill some appreciation for beavers and hopefully inspire more folks to get along with this amazing architect. Diverse habitats, water conservation, and stormwater management is all a possibility if we just "leave it to beavers"!

We're talking about the hognose snake! This time, tragedy at with our screech owl family prompted us an opportunity to talk about the sometimes seemingly "cruel" side of Mother Nature. We recently visited Italy for the incredible Slow Food Cheese 2023 festival in Bra, Italy, spending time in the Piemonte region of Italy, located in the northwest of Italy. For this episode, we had an opportunity to visit Seward, Alaska for a few days before a conference and we made the most of it! We burned up the Seward Highway and beyond as we searched for whales, sea otters, snow-capped mountains, eagles, seals, and were hot on the trail of the elusive Aurora borealis. For many folks, like Gabrielle and I, when you think of playful critters, the amazing otter comes to mind.
