Meet Jenn. She lives in her RV and travels solo with her furry friends. There are two things she advises an RV traveler to have, one is roadside service in case you break down, and two always have your pets chipped. Listen as she describes her travels and tribulations. Recently, while in her car, she was hit by an unlicensed driver with no insurance. She sustained some bad injuries including a crushed ankle. Buying a brand new RV is an exciting and fun experience. However, for one man it was a rough road. We introduce you to Danny from Los Angeles, who tells you what he, and his wife, PJ, had to endure to get a brand new RV. Three of them were flawed and one was accidently wrecked. But, the dealer stepped up and Danny got his new motorhome that he and his family thoroughly enjoy. Patti and I also give you an important tip about why you should fill your water tank when you arrive at an RV campsite or park. If you are going to boondock, you should travel with a full tank. We travel light with a small amount of water to get better fuel mileage. However, RV parks and campsites can suddenly turn off the water due to old pipes breaking or other issues. Be prepared. On Thursday November 8th, 2018, the most destructive wildfire in California's history occurred in Northern California’s Butte County. Within 4 hours, the towns of Paradise and Concow were almost completely destroyed by the catastrophic wildfire. Over 85 people lost their lives. 18,000 structures burned to the ground. Jeff and Patti met Scott and Lynn Taylor, at an RV resort in Palm Springs, California. For 25 years Scott and Lynn lived in Paradise, California and tell their story about how they were able to get out of the deadly path of the fire with their RV and a few possessions. Ed Pardi and his wife Shirley Diamond started RVing four years ago when Ed was 79!! Ed started his very successful career in the car industry in his early 20's, then moved up to selling airplanes. Eventually he started his own company selling high end airplanes and jets. Yes, he piloted all of them. He flew all over the world and flew over everything from place to place. On Wednesday, September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian hit Florida. Listen as we interview our friend Tim Apel. He describes what happened to his home in Fort Myers. Many of you will remember him from our podcast, Episode 38. Tim also explains how they are coping with the chaotic aftermath. It’s the second largest disaster loss, with at least $60 billion in private insured losses, not to mention the human toll it has taken. Hurricane Ian was a category 4 hurricane with winds of 150 mph and a storm surge of 7 to at least 12 feet that caused tremendous damage. Kirk is their guest this week and gives important information about monitoring the weather and how to stay safe. Kirk was influenced by legendary television meteorologist Dick Goddard who started his career with the Air Force and contributed to many top-secret projects. Most cellphones have very good weather apps. For their personal computers, Jeff & Patti recommend the National Weather Service radar website and also the National Weather Service homepage. While RVing, you’ll see amazing sights and visit incredible places. But can you meet someone special and eventually get married? Yes! Hear the story of Michelle and David Brown. Each of them had been through a lot in their lives and had made the choice to hit the road solo to find a new beginning. She left Indiana and he left Atlanta. Fate had them meet in a Harvest Host in Louisiana where their site was double booked. A year and a half later they are married. The Great Lakes are a wonderful place to explore with your RV. Jeff & Patti talk about camping on the St. Mary’s River near Michigan’s oldest city, Sault Ste. Marie. They also give good information about how to watch huge freighters and cruise ships go through the Soo Locks. There is a special Marine Traffic app that you can install on your phone, which will give you information about every ship in your area. Whitefish Point, Michigan, is famous for a lighthouse built in 1849, as well as the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. It is approximately a 1.5 hours drive from the Mackinac Bridge. The museum features superb exhibits of shipwreck artifacts, artwork, and shipwreck models. The bell of the famous steamer Edmund Fitzgerald is on display. It serves as a memorial to her crew that sank 17 miles north of Whitefish Point on November 10th, 1975, during a fierce storm. All 29 crewmen were lost in the disaster. The Fitzgerald was built to transport taconite iron ore pellets between the mines near Duluth, Minnesota and the iron works at ports around the Great Lakes. On November 10th, the Edmund Fitzgerald and another vessel, the SS Arthur M Anderson, departed ports on western Lake Superior to begin their voyages east to the Sault Ste. Marie locks and eventually the lower Great Lakes. The Anderson was about 10 miles behind the Edmund Fitzgerald. Both ships were in constant contact via radio when they encountered the storm. Jeff & Patti interview Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum’s Historical Interpreter Andrew Schneider, who explains the fascinating details of one of the best-known shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. RVing through Michigan’s lower and upper peninsulas gives you a chance to experience what many refer to as the “8th Wonder of the World”, the Mackinac Bridge, which opened to traffic on November 1, 1957. Jeff & Patti interview Mackinac Bridge Director Kim Nowack, who details the characteristics of the famous bridge as well as interesting things that happen daily. Even Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs filmed an episode with the maintenance crew back in 2007. Mackinac Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere, connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. From the city of St. Ignace on the north end to the village of Mackinaw City on the south end, the views are spectacular. If you haven’t driven across the Big Mac Bridge, put it on your bucket list. The maximum depth of the water at midspan is 295 feet, the height of the main towers above the water is 552 feet, and the height of the roadway above the water at midspan is 199 feet. Ships can easily pass under it. Also, the length is a staggering 26,372 feet long! The “Tip of the Week” is to inspect your camping site before you set up or pull into it. This will prevent you from experiencing what happened to Jeff & Patti. They had to be towed out of a camping site in one of Michigan’s State Parks. Plus the story of Muriel and Dick who came to Michigan from Florida to work in a campground and had a unique way of getting an RV to live in. Recovering stranded vehicles off-roading. Many who like to RV also like to take their vehicles off-road. That can create a lot of problems if you are not prepared.
