Melisande Neal is an expert in her chosen field of pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenting and founder of Kawartha Birth and Lactation. She is an experienced, certified birth educator, doula, infant massage instructor, Cranio Sacral Therapy practitioner (CST), La Leche League Leader and registered Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and past midwife apprentice. She is also a pregnancy and infant loss counselor.

We talk about postpartum depression, but we often don’t recognize prenatal depression, a mood disorder that affects someone who is pregnant.
Vanessa is a mom, an entrepreneur and former education worker. She left the school board after having her son in order to provide the life she wanted for him.
Vanessa experienced a difficult pregnancy. She had severe prenatal depression. And it was in the midst of the pandemic so there was virtually no resources available to her. She survived by implementing a routine of mindfulness, body movement and journaling.

Alyssa Warmland is an interdisciplinary artist and activist. Her work utilizes elements of radical vulnerability, restorative justice, mindfulness, performance, and direct action. Mackenzie is a fundraiser and mother who is more than honest with Sonja about her postpartum journey, especially in the mental health realm. Mackenzie talks about as a new mom, we can have everything beautifully set up and ready on the outside, but the realities of our internal maternal self can be suffering.
At 4 months postpartum, a sleep deprived Mackenzie became erratic, communication with her husband suffered and started showing unusual behaviors. Mackenzie was supported by her family to go to the hospital when she realized she was experiencing a mental health crisis.
Mackenzie wants parents to know the early signs of depression, how to get the help you need, and to know that there are supports out there for parents who are deeply struggling with the postpartum period of their lives. She has developed a planner for other parents to help support our mental health.

We are so thrilled to have Atheana Brown with us this week. A non-diet, body inclusive, fat-positive and trauma informed Registered Dietician, after ten years in her practice, Atheana started noticing deeply entrenched trends in her patients, in the way they viewed their bodies, deep-rooted behaviors and narratives around diet culture. Atheana’s whole world in nutrition changed very drastically and has since gone on to take more education that lead her into the world of intuitive eating practices.
Intuitive eating is all about listening to what our bodies need. Children do this so well!
Atheana reminds us that the language we use around food is very important, specifically as parents. We are not born hating our bodies, we are not born understanding the hierarchy of food. This episode is pure empowerment!

Sarah interviewed her friend, Leah Simms-Karp, who is the mother of an amazing little girl named Bea (Beatrice).
Bea is medically fragile (she has a diagnosis that requires TPN and a central line) and requires around the clock care.
