We are all familiar with the concept of classic literature: every language, every culture has its own collection of classics. But what makes a book earn the label of 'classic'? What qualities or characteristics do they share?

Today we answer the question: what is literature?
In order to find an answer we first look at the different types of stories and traditions: oral tradition and written tradition. Then we look at some examples and discuss whether they are or not literature and the reasons behind our classification. At the end, after reflecting on the different ways of telling stories and the different types of stories there are, we define literature.

Before we delve into specific details of history, language, and literary marvel we ought to tackle the important question of "why." So today we begin our literary journey by exploring the questions of why literature is worth our time, why we love it, why we hate it, and why we study it.
