Allegory52a publishes original short stories in English and Afrikaans. New stories are published every month.
In the lyrics of In My Secret Life by Leonard Cohan you will find the following sentences, “Looked through the paper. Makes you want to cry. Nobody cares if the people live or die. And the dealer wants you thinking. That it’s either black or white.” I think there is a lot of truth to this. The dealer controls the narrative. The last thing the dealer wants is for people to get along and live in peace. But, it also seems true that life on earth is a bloodthirsty business and only the strongest survive. The idea for this story came after a famous Springbok victory considering the mixed emotions of joy and hatred that followed.

Many people choose to become homeless. To live outside the framework of rules, expectations and pressure society puts on people. Of course, not everyone chooses this path. In an instant you could loose everything. In an instant your whole life could change. Regardless the reason, there is a sad desolation that forms part of such an existence. I wrote the following story to try and illustrate this desolation:

The Boss sings about their Glory Days: how one of his friends was a good baseball player and could stop talking about it when they met again after many year; how there was a girl in their neighbourhood that let the heads roll. The good old days! Blink and you miss them! It goes by so quickly but stay with you forever. It feels like yesterday. Problem, however, is that it is easy to live in the past for your entire life. I was oversees for 12 years. The time passed so quickly. During that time so many things happened. Life goes on. Life goes on without you. The past changes into the present. The question is where do you live? The past or the present? Be thankful for the past, but focus on the future. It could help to live in the present. It is not easy. Sometimes you first need to learn the lessons from the past before you can shift your focus. The next story I wrote to inspire myself a bit.

Luge Glider from Lichtenburg, by W. Laufs
A tale of speed, precision and bravery.It’s remarkable how people push the limits of what is possible. Felix Baumgartener jumps from space. Others speed through the air in wingsuits. And then, of course, Kloof St has its longboarders; they go so fast they trigger the traffic camera. A while ago I sat watching the luge on TV. I started thinking of Kloof St and those longboarders. I imagined how there’s someone who glides down Signal Hill St and into Kloof St using his own modified luge method. A method Sanka and Derice would approve of! A person who goes about his business in a nonchalant fashion. A person of extreme bravery. An unsung hero. Unfortunately, the names Koos and Wikus had already been taken. But, L.L had not. And so, L.L. van der Merwe was born:
