New Horizon NI
New Horizon is a seven day Christian festival that takes place every year on the Ulster University campus in Coleraine, set on the picturesque north coast of Northern Ireland. It exists to provide a space and time in which thousands of people of all ages can be taught from the bible, be inspired through worship and story, develop a missional heart, and engage with relevant and challenging issues. The event has been running in NI since 1989 and we are very much looking forward to seeing and hearing what God has in store for us in the years and decades to come.

This seminar turns from the head to the heart, asking not just why evil exists, but where God is in the midst of it. Through personal story, biblical reflection, and the hope of the Gospel, Alanzo Julian Paul helps us see that God is not indifferent to our hurt. This seminar will provide examples of how critical thinking is important for the development of your faith and character. Additionally, we’ll address what critical thinking is and explore various ways of how to do critical thinking by integrating examples of logical thinking with our desire to engage with story and creativity. We will also evaluate how these methods are inspired by listening to the spirit of God. We will apply critical thinking to engaging our faith within education, thinking of ways to share your faith as a teacher, parent or student.
‘Forgive one another as God has forgiven you’. A short sentence with a world of complexity behind it. This seminar will aim to set out the biblical foundation of God’s forgiveness, look at the practical implications for our relationships, and also face some of the ways we can easily stumble as we seek to forgive.
Applying the gospel to the everyday challenges of marriage – transforming conflict into an opportunity for growth.It should come as no surprise that when one sinner marries another conflict will arise. But it doesn’t have to be destructive. But the sanctity of life and value of every person is at risk. We need a better story of suffering and death – one centred on Jesus and shaped by faith, hope and love. In this seminar we’ll explore what is happening in our culture, how the gospel transforms our thinking and how we can engage with the issue by speaking the truth in humility and serving others in love.

Archbishop Ben Kwashi is well known as a preacher and evangelist throughout Nigeria, Africa, England, Ireland and the United States. He was ordained in 1982 and 10 years later became Bishop of Jos. In January 2008, he was presented as the Archbishop of Jos Province in the Church of Nigeria and is currently moving into a new season of ministry. He and his wife Gloria have six children but have also adopted over 70 orphans and provide a school for several hundred. On the final night of New Horizon 2023, he spoke from Habakkuk chapter 3.
Through personal testimonies from the global church, this seminar will explore how the light of the gospel has brought joy even in places of challenge and darkness. Millions of our brothers and sisters around the world face extreme persecution for following Jesus. Considering this alongside other topics of war, displacement and gender-based violence, we will see examples of God redeeming suffering and the gift of God-given joy will be presented. Voices from the global church will tell their stories. There will also be opportunity for discussion on what the church in Ireland can learn from experiences of Christians across the world.
Most of us will have had moments when we have been bewildered by what happens to us and made to wonder if God is really there, and if so, does he actually care? Prayers are unanswered, suffering seems unjust, and God seem inactive, silent or even absent. Hopes are dashed and dreams unfulfilled. Our faith takes a battering and we are simply hanging on. Without offering trite solutions, or pretending that there are any quick-fix solutions, Tony and Jilly Horsfall shared some responses that enable us to move forward to a deeper relationship with God even in the face of disappointment.

Across Northern Ireland, many are arriving in our communities seeking refuge and a welcome - whether they be seeking asylum or from Ukraine, Afghanistan or Hong Kong. The Year of the Lord's Favour - Tony Horsfall continued his teaching from Isaiah 61 on Wednesday morning of New Horizon 2023. " We can bring to God our ashes, mourning and despair and we can trade it in to receive beauty, joy and praise."

When Archbishop Ben Kwashi’s plane was delayed, Bishop Ken Clarke stepped in to share during the Tuesday evening celebration at NH2023. He brought a powerful challenge for us to be a church that prioritises the Great Commission. "Whoever we are, if we are a disciple of Jesus, whatever we are facing, not least in this kingdom task of sharing the good news, He is with us. Paul said, 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.'"

After graduating from London School of Theology, Tony Horsfall served as a missionary and as a pastor before heading up a missions training programme at Bawtry Hall. Since 2004, he has had his own ministry Charis Training and has a passion to see people grow in their relationship with God. On Tuesday morning at New Horizon continued his series teaching on Isaiah 61 with this powerful message "Good News for the Poor"

As Christians, seeking to live out Micah’s call to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God, how do we bring hope and light into dark places? Join Stu as he shares about his time with International Justice Mission tackling the Online Sexual Exploitation of Children. This new form of trafficking targets children in places like the Philippines and is fuelled by demand from places like the UK. But there is hope. Hear how Christians are engaging with suffering and helping to bring about miraculous transformation in across the world.

For many people outside West Belfast it is unknown. It is also a place where an evangelical expression of church is largely, although not completely unknown. In the past the Presbyterian Church had a number of congregations there, but the last closed in 1993. Yet the constituency of West Belfast is home to around 95,000 people! Last year a new four year development post was created to reach back into West Belfast, with the hand of friendship, service and grace. David Moore shares about this project.

How do we speak to God when we face difficult situations, whether it be Covid, Ukraine or something else? Lament in the Bible offers one way for Christians both to express honestly to God how we feel about our difficulties, and to reaffirm trust in God as relevant even to these situations. In this seminar we will explore the importance of lament in the Bible, looking at what it is, where it is found, and how it is relevant for us. We will also ask whether there is anything that we cannot say to God as part of our relationship with him.
William Ford teaches Old Testament and Hebrew at Belfast Bible College. He has a particular interest in how we understand theologically difficult passages in the Bible.
Leaders aspire to be instruments of change. However leadership is not simply about the change that is brought about in or through an organisation or a church; the journey of leadership itself is a crucible of change through which the leader is transformed. This seminar will aim to explore some of the ways leaders can expect to be changed as they lead. The seminar will be of particular relevance to leaders of churches and other Christian ministries, but will also be open to Christians who are leading in other spheres of influence.

Every 15 minutes, a child comes into care in the UK. The number of children in care in Northern Ireland has risen by 41% in the last 10 years. There is a huge need to find loving, stable homes for children and teenagers. God’s people are called to respond to this challenge. Many churches across Northern Ireland support families to provide homes through fostering, adoption and supported lodgings. But there’s more need; more potential. This seminar shares stories and offers suggestions for how you and your church can play an active role in caring for children who need a place to belong.
Roger is the Northern Ireland Lead for Home For Good, a UK charity that works with churches to promote fostering, adoption and supported lodgings for teenagers. Roger is a foster carer with Barnardo’s NI.
Judith is the Southern Trust Coordinator with Home For Good, working with churches to help recruit and support foster carers, adoptive parents and supported lodging hosts. Judith has experience of adoption and fostering through the Southern Trust.
There is an epidemic of false guilt within the church community at large and yet this phenomenon is often overlooked because we assume that ‘feeling guilty’ equates to ‘being guilty’. The Gospel is the only true remedy for true guilt and yet so many Christians still live under condemnation. It is the greatest paradox of the Christian church today and a core reason why our witness to the world is weakened. If you resonate with this problem in anyway, this seminar is for you.

Too often our discussions about worship boil down to the question, “What kind of worship do I like?” so that we miss the real question about the kind of worship the Father seeks. This seminar will attempt to explore that second question by outlining a brief biblical theology of worship, and to unpack some of the ways that understanding can enrich our experience and practice of worship.
John (our morning Bible teacher this year) has led worship in local church and conference contexts, and has a long term interest in the theology and practice of worship. He is the author of the book “The Message of Worship” (IVP)
Louise is a cognitive behavioural therapist whose Master’s degree examined the effects of caring for a loved one with dementia. Dementia is caused by damage to the brain. Each case is unique – a combination of the pathology, the individual’s personality and their spirituality. This seminar looks at proven principles of care and dispels some of the myths surrounding the disease and its treatment. It also looks at how churches can best support ‘dementia families’ and a ‘Brain and Soul Boosting’ programme being used by hospital chaplains, families and churches.

The COVID pandemic has caused an even greater income and wealth divide – low paid workers, people in debt, single parents, black and ethnic communities have all been hardest hit. How can the Church respond in the years to come? What can you do? Chris is a Director in Christians Against Poverty with responsibility for the UK network of CAP services all run in partnership with local Churches.

We wonder about the relationship between the Bible and other ways God might speak. Good Grief: Living with sorrow and loss with Malcolm Duncan Grief does not stop simply because we are followers of Christ. In this seminar, Malcolm Duncan will explore some of the Biblical motifs around grief, loss and mourning and unpack some of his own journey through sorrow and loss. Amongst other things, we will think about what it means to walk through the valley of the shadow of death, how we learn to change our grip as we travel through loss, how God can use shadows and darkness as places of encounter, what it means to live with the minor key of loss, and what lessons we can learn from the story of the resurrection of Lazarus.
