Yet, these words are not uttered to be needlessly cruel, but we dig into these hard sayings and see how Jesus is passionately and compassionately calling to the religious in His day to repent and look to Him for their salvation.

As we take our spiritual next steps, we must remember that growth never happens in a day. It happens daily. This is why our daily walk matters so much. In fact, one of Jesus' final teachings before His crucifixion reminds us that we are called to "dwell" or "abide" in Him.

But responding to the good news of Jesus is much more complicated. As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, we gather together to study the best news that we could ever hear. Jesus is alive!

While there are those who tend to like rules, the Pharisees go far beyond rules and structure for themselves and began to impose heavy burdens on the people. Through this lens, they looked for ways to trap Jesus and His followers. Jesus confronts this behavior as He shows that He is the Lord of the Sabbath and the Lord of Rest.

Have you ever heard an echo? Of course, you have! In the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) the message of God is shouted loudly through Jesus. While a cursory reading of the book of Esther may leave you wondering "Where is God?", chapter five gives one of the clearest "echoes" of God's working through the Old Testament. (This is part four of a series entitled "Invisible God.")

Through the book of Esther, God is never mentioned but always working. The introduction to the book poses the vile King Ahasuerus against the invisible but ever-present King of the universe as an enthralling drama is about to unfold. (This is part one of a series entitled "Invisible God.")

God rarely works the way that we do. For example, which of us would see death as a pathway to victory? And which of us would choose a woman like Mary Magdalene to be the one to carry our message? Join us as we dig into Mary's story and as we gain insight into how God works in our lives this Easter.

The story of the Bible is often told as a story of conflicting kingdoms - the kingdom of God and the kingdom of self. As he wraps up his letter, Peter challenges believers with a few specific ways to take our little "kingdom" and give it to Him.

Hardships and life can catch us off guard, but should they? Sure, the circumstances can be unexpected, but knowing that the world that we live in is broken by sin, followers of Jesus should be prepared to walk through difficulties knowing that Jesus faced them, too. So instead of acting surprised, Peter tells us how to respond in trying days.

Wouldn't it be nice if your face changed when God saved you? That way everyone would notice the new you and expect something different. But that's not how God works. Instead of changing us from the outside in, He works from the inside out. So how do you deal with living in the same skin but a new you?

When people are passionate about something, it's hard to spend time with them without knowing about it! Most of us are like this about our kids, jobs, or hobbies, and followers of Jesus are called to be like this about the One that saved them. When you have a hope that cannot be taken away, you'll find yourself displaying and declaring the good news that you have been given.

Nobody likes being told what to do, but Peter says three times in this passage that we are to "be subject" in specific areas of life. Through our subjection to earthly authorities, we actually demonstrate our dependence on our heavenly Authority that sits on a throne above every earthly throne.

With so many competing ideas about who we are and why we are here, it's vital that we let the Word of God inform our beliefs. Peter casts a vision for God's people built on the foundation of Christ that calls us to grow into maturity and to be built up as a part of something far greater than any one of us.
