The entrance antiphon is the first indicator that the Christ child is almost here, calling for "The Just One" to come down from the heavens. Taken from Isaiah chapter 45, verse 8, we read:

and let the clouds rain down the Just One;
let the earth be opened and bring forth a Savior.

This weekend we are celebrating the Second Sunday of Advent.

As is true of the Advent season in general, the readings today share the message of the coming of the Messiah. Beginning with Isaiah's prophesies in chapter 30, verses 19 and 30, the Entrance antiphon proclaims:
O people of Sion, behold,
the Lord will come to save the nations,

This is one of the only ordinary time feast days in the entire liturgical calendar where three of the four readings tell the exact same prophesy. This is the case with the First reading, Responsorial Psalm, and the Gospel reading which all tell the story (or prophesy, really) of the vineyard of the Lord.
Generally, that kind of cohesion is reserved for the seasons of Advent, Lent, and Easter. But today the entire redemption story between God, his son Jesus, and his people is summarized so well in these readings.
Entrance Antiphon:
Within your will, O Lord, all things are established,
and there is none that can resist your will.
For you have made all things, the heaven and the earth,
and all that is held within the circle of heaven;
you are the Lord of all.
(Esther 4:17)
Psalm 80
The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel.

The continuous theme of God's unending mercy is still prevalent in the readings for today.
Beginning with our Entrance Antiphon from Daniel chapter 3, we enter into worship with a penitent heart as we acknowledge our faults and plead for God's bountiful mercy.

This weekend we celebrate the 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year A.
After prayerfully reviewing the scriptures for this Sunday, I fell that three main points are emphasized:

We are approaching the end of the Lenten season this weekend with Palm Sunday and the passion of our Lord. This mass is very unique in that we begin with a celebration, but we end reflecting on the sorrowful passion that Jesus suffered in the crucifixion.
The entrance antiphon, taken from Matthew chapter 21 verse 9, celebrates the Lord's entrance into Jerusalem when he rode in on a donkey and the people cried out:

Today we are celebrating the 5th Sunday of Lent year A, and are only a couple weeks away from the feast of the Resurrection. The readings and antiphons point us to God's perfect justice, mercy, and promise of the resurrection.

Today's readings for the 4th Sunday of Lent, Year A, highlight some key steps of the Lord's story of salvation for his people.
We journey from Isaish's prophesy of the Lord's final judgement, through King David's anointing, continue to his famous psalm 23 "the Lord is my Shepherd", and ultimately arrive at Jesus showing his disciples that He is the light of the world.

Now we have reached the 2nd Sunday of Lent, so we are 10 days into our 40 day Lenten journey. The scriptures for today encourage us to stay the course and keep our focus on the Lord. We are reminded to seek God's face, place our trust in the Lord, and listen to His word.
In our entrance antiphon from Psalm 27 verses 8 & 9, we echo our own heart's deepest desire as we proclaim:

This weekend we celebrate the 1st Sunday of Lent, Year A. We're only a few days into our Lenten journey that started this past Ash Wednesday. Sometimes the beginning of any journey toward self-improvement can have a rough or rocky start. But I want to encourage you to keep going. We should never focus on our mistakes, but instead on the Lord, who promises to always be there for his faithful ones when they call to him.
And God knows we need encouragement - we need to be reminded of his promises. That's why I believe the entrance antiphon for today is so fitting.

Today we begin our lenten season with Ash Wednesday, and the first episode of Season 6 of this podcast. This is also the first season of the podcast that is presented in a video format.
During these 40 days of Lent, which includes prescribed fasting, prayer, and repentance, we are truly given an opportunity to turn our hearts more fully to the Lord.
My goal is to provide a new approach to praying more deeply with the psalms, antiphons, and other scriptures each Sunday. Each one of us is called to truly explore and meditate on the sacred scriptures so that be can become more like Christ, and realize the best version of ourselves.

This weekend we are celebrating the 3rd Sunday of Advent, year A. Our readings center around the prophesies of the coming of the Messiah and in John the Baptist preparing the way of the Lord.
The entrance antiphon sets the tone of apprehensive waiting as we rejoice in the coming of the Lord. Taken from Philippians chapter 4, verses 4 and 5, we read:
"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice.
Indeed, the Lord is near."
In the Psalm for today from chapter 146, we the people cry out to the Lord to come quickly and save us from our oppressors. The refrain itself comes from Isaiah chapter 35, and states:
"Lord, come and save us."
Inthe gospel acclamation, from Isaiah chapter 61 verse 1, we sing the words of the prophet himself, proclaiming the good news:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor."
In the communion antiphon today, we're back in Isaiah chapter 35, verse 4:
"Say to the faint of heart: Be strong and do not fear.
Behold, our God will come, and he will save us."

This weekend we are celebrating the 2nd Sunday of Advent, year A.
As is true of the Advent season in general, the readings today share the message of the coming of the Messiah. Beginning with Isaiah's prophesies in chapter 30, verses 19 and 30, the Entrance antiphon proclaims:
"O people of Sion, behold,
the Lord will come to save the nations,
and the Lord will make the glory of his voice heard
in the joy of your heart."
Taken from chapter 72, the Psalm response is:
"Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace forever."
Like Isaiah, John the Baptist proclaims the coming of the Messiah, saying in the gospel acclamation from Luke chapter 3, verses 4 & 6:
"Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths:
all flesh shall see the salvation of God."
The communion antiphon is another proclamation of the coming Messiah. Taken from the deuterocanonical book Baruch, we read:
"Jerusalem, arise and stand upon the heights,
and behold the joy which comes to you from God."

This weekend we are celebrating the beginning of a new liturgical year, cycle A, with the First Sunday of Advent.
O come, Emmanuel.
The entrance antiphon helps us prepare our hearts to worship the Lord at the beginning of mass. Taken from Psalm chapter 25 verses 1 through 3, we sing:
"To you, I lift up my soul, O my God.
In you, I have trusted; let me not be put to shame.
Nor let my enemies exult over me;
and let none who hope in you be put to shame."
This psalm is, interestingly, the same refrain as last Sunday - the Feast of Christ the King:
"Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord."
The gospel acclamation prepares our hearts to receive the word of God. Taken from Psalm chapter 85, verse 8, we sing:
"Show us Lord your love;
and grant us your salvation."
Like the gospel acclamation, the communion antiphon for today is also from Psalm chapter 85. Verse 13 tells us:
"The Lord will bestow his bounty,
and our earth shall yield its increase."

This weekend we celebrate the feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, which marks the final solemnity of the liturgical year C, and the final Sunday of the Catholic church's 3-year liturgical cycle.
The Psalm for today is attributed to King David from chapter 122:
"Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord."
In our communion antiphon from Psalm chapter 29 verses 10 and 11, which was written by King David long before Jesus' birth, we learn that:
"The Lord sits as King for ever.
The Lord will bless his people with peace."

This weekend we celebrate the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, year C, and the next-to-last Sunday of this liturgical cycle. The theme of Christ coming as the final King of the Universe continues through today and next Sunday as we culminate the end of the liturgical year with the feast of Christ the King.
Today's psalm foretells the Lord's coming and encourages us to praise the coming King of the Universe. Taken from Psalm 98, the response is:
"The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice."
Our communion antiphon also reminds us to place our hope in the Lord. Taken from Psalm 73, verse 28, we read:
"To be near God is my happiness,
to place my hope in God the Lord."

This weekend we celebrate the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, year C. As we wind down the liturgical year, we are approaching the last Sunday solemnity in just a few weeks: that of Christ the King.
The psalms in these final Sundays also proclaim his coming, like we have for today with Psalm 17:
"Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full."

We're approaching the end of the church calendar year C as we celebrate the 31st Sunday of Ordinary time this weekend. In just a few weeks is the feast of Christ the King year C, and then the cycle returns to Year A again with the 1st Sunday of Advent on November 27th.
Taken from chapter 145, the psalm response is:
"I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God."
The words in the verses are the very sentiments echoed in our hearts when we have been forgiven by God's unending grace and mercy.
The communion antiphon is from Psalm chapter 16, and is one of my favorite psalms of praise. The antiphon itself is from verse 11:
"You will show me the path of life,
the fullness of joy in your presence, O Lord."

This weekend we celebrate the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, year C. Much like last Sunday, today's readings remind us that the Lord is merciful to those who cry out to him with humble hearts.
The Psalm for today really sums up all the readings in the response itself. Taken from chapter 34, the response is
"The Lord hears the cry of the poor."
As often occurs, the communion antiphon for today is almost like a response to the psalm. Whereas the psalm proclaims the Lord's eternal care for the lowly, the communion antiphon thanks God for his "saving help."
Taken from Psalm chapter 20 verse 6, we read:
"We will ring out our joy at your saving help
and exult in the name of our God."

This weekend we celebrate the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, year C. Our readings today encourage us to hope in the Lord and pray without ceasing, looking to Him to protect and preserve us.
In the psalm for today, from chapter 121, we proclaim that the Lord - the master of all creation - is who we look to for help in times of trouble. The response reads:
"Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth."

This weekend we celebrate the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, cycle C. The readings for today encourage us to continually hope in the Lord be attentive to God's voice, so we can serve him faithfully and do his will.
The psalm for today, taken from chapter 95, reminds us to continually listen for God's voice, and to be open and surrendered to his commands:
"If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts."
As it often does, this communion antiphon for today follows the psalm very well, for those who keep their hearts open to God are rewarded by God's goodness.
Taken from Lamentations chapter 3, verse 25, we read:
"The Lord is good to those who hope in him,
to the soul that seeks him."

This weekend we celebrate the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C, and the beloved parable of the prodigal son. This is certainly one of my favorite parables, and all the readings for today proclaim God's mercy toward humanity.
The psalm for this weekend is taken from chapter 51, the most famous of the seven Penitential Psalms. The response, however, is from today's gospel in Luke chapter 15. Verse 18 is used for the response:
"I will rise and go to my father."
The communion antiphon for today also proclaims God's great mercy. Taken from Psalm chapter 36 verse 8, we read:
"How precious is your mercy, O God!
The children of men seek shelter in the shadow of your wings."

This Sunday we celebrate the 2nd Sunday of Lent, Year C. As we journey through the scriptures from the lectionary, we go from seeking God's face in the entrance antiphon, to proclaiming that the Lord is our light and salvation in the psalm. This weekend we celebrate the 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time, cycle B. I love that the theme for today is centered around being true disciples of Christ in our lives, and not just following a set of rules.
The Psalm for today, from chapter 15, says:
"The one who does justice will live in the presence of the LORD."
As we continue to explore the theme of living justly in the presence of the Lord, and the need to allow our hearts to be guided by the author of truth, I find the Gospel acclamation fitting. Taken from James chapter 1, verse 18, it reads:
"The Father willed to give us birth by the word of truth
that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures."
The Communion Antiphon for today, taken from Psalm chapter 31, verse 20, has a different approach to the same theme - that God has good things planned for those who fear and revere the Lord:

Today's celebration of Pentecost marks the end of the Easter season as we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit of God.
The Psalm today, taken from chapter 104, is a plea to the Lord to send out His Spirit:
"Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth."
The Gospel Acclamation for today is taken from one of the prayers in the Catholic missal, and echoes the same petition to the Lord:
"Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love."
The final passage in the communion antiphon, taken from Acts chapter 2, verses 4 and 11, confirms the reception of the Holy Spirit and its effect on the disciples:

Today's episode features a guided meditation on Psalm 23. This Sunday is Good Shepherd Sunday, the 4th Sunday of Easter, year B, and although the psalm selected for this particular cycle of the liturgical calendar is actually Psalm 118, I thought a meditation on Psalm 23 would be appropriate.
"The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want."
The famous Psalm 23, where the Lord is compared to a shepherd of his sheep, is by far one of the most recited and sung psalms in the entire book of Psalms. I'm going to introduce the sung refrain of the psalm, and then review the verses in sections. I invite you to meditate on the words, and take a moment to offer up your own words of prayer in the pauses between. I'll finish with a recitation of the Lord's Prayer and a fully-composed version of the psalm.

This weekend we are celebrating the Fourth and final Sunday of Advent. In only a few more days we will enter the Christmas season.

The communion antiphon, taken from Isaiah chapter 7 verse 14, prophesied this very coming of the Lord. It reads:
"Behold, a Virgin shall conceive and bear a son;
and his name will be called Emmanuel."
This isn't some fantasy book. This isn't a fairy tale. This is real life. This is our faith. And I'm proud to proclaim it.

This weekend we're celebrating the final Sunday of the Liturgical Year, cycle A, with the Feast of Christ the King. Next Sunday we begin a new liturgical year, cycle B, with the First Sunday of Advent.
Christ the King is a really special solemnity for me because it was on this day, over 15 years ago, that I was confirmed. So I always look forward to this feast day every year.
Year A has one of the most beloved psalms of all time, from chapter 23:
"The Lord is my shepherd: there is nothing I shall want."
