Guitar Blah Blah is the daily guitar podcast for people that can't stop talking about guitar. A new episode every day explores all there is to know in the world of guitars, from interviews with wold-renowned builders and artists to discussions on gear, specs and – of course – music.
I talk with Florian of Millimetric Instruments about innovative guitar design, building skateboards and why B.C. Rich guitars belong in a burlesque show.
This is my full-length interview with Florian, conducted for the episode "A New Era of Innovative Guitar Design".

Is the guitar world really as stuck in the past and conservative in its tastes as we often hear? If so, then where do all the innovators fit in? Because amongst all the reverence for a 'golden age' of guitars and guitar music are countless creative people taking the instrument in new directions.
In this episode, I talk with three guitar builders who design out-there, innovative instruments that push the boundaries of guitar design. What perspective do they have on this – is the guitar world stuck in its ways, or are we heading into a new era of openness and experimentation?
I want to say a massive thank you to Florian, Robin and Leo for joining me on this episode. Please do check out their work at the links below.

We all like something new, expressive, different, genuine. We can all also respect that artists need promotion. But if online spaces are creative outlets rather than just promotional tools, should we really drive our output on them with some kind of prescriptive digital marketing consultancy? Wouldn't our own creative inspirations and intuitions serve as a better foundation, just like when we're making albums/films/art/anything?
Today's music/official PowerPoint presentation: youtu.be/9UVhLu5c500
Sometimes it's easy to get stuck in the mindset that there's a single 'right way' you need to be told to follow – from playing guitar to using gear to whatever else. It's usually when you're trying to figure something out or attain something in particular, and you end up just wanting an answer at a certain point. But it maybe isn't the most helpful or beneficial mindset for a few reasons, and it can take hearing from a great musician to reset your perspective.

This past year or so has seen massive guitar sales, and companies big and small are still struggling to keep up with demand now. Even with some supply side issues taken into consideration, that's largely been caused by record guitar sales. While this will all inevitably level off, will the guitar community continue to get (and stay) bigger?

From Martin and the Fishman Aura System to the Taylor T5, the Godin A6 and the HyVibe System, with piezo pickups, soundhole pickups, mini microphones and neodymium magnets in the mix – a lot has been thrown at the problem of trying to get a 'natural' sound when amplifying the acoustic guitar. How close are we to nailing it?

Another year, another NAMM Show (sort of), and another set of new guitar models from Vox. Over the decades, the beloved amp brand have made attempt after attempt to enter the guitar market. Their models have been experimental, innovative, classic, beautiful, and sometimes a seemingly perfect blend between all of these. Yet, they never really stick around – on the market, or in our minds. What's going on?

Avoiding the big debate around whether they're the next best thing to vintage guitars or are just a lame phony, relic guitars and aged guitars have thoroughly established themselves in the guitar world. Whether they're your thing or not, here are a couple of names to seriously consider when it comes to guitars with that vintage vibe.

Gibson's first true premier electric model was a place for experimentation and innovation, breaking new ground both pre- and post-war. It serves as a fascinating thread for following the early development of the electric guitar. But why didn't its boldest feature on first being released – its pickup – stick around?

Despite everything moving to the virtual world, it's still NAMM Show season – or Believe In Music season for this year. Many companies are sticking to the usual cycle of revealing the majority of their new gear for the year ahead in the run up to the show, so it seems a good time to put my recent 2021 predictions to the test. Just how far off was I?

Paul Gilbert just sold his iconic Ibanez Ice-Stroyer – along with a bunch of other signed and signature gear – to raise money towards Juan Alderete's recovery. I think as a guitar community we're pretty fed up with hearing about all this legal stuff. It's seemed constant for quite some time at this point, and it's not why we're all into music and guitars. The S-Type or Strat-inspired model has, of course, been done more times than there are planets in the solar system or grains of sand on a beach. Copying is a constant topic of conversation in the guitar world when it comes to both music and gear. What counts as a copy? What is legal and what should be legal? What seems acceptable and fair? Does 'cloning' or 'following' another product harm the industry? Does it really help consumers?
It can be helpful to look outside of our own little world that's full of brand loyalties and personal preferences to get a fresh perspective. A big story in the world of MIDI keyboards right now offers just such a chance. Is the new offering from Behringer just a copy? Was 'Stairway' a clone or simply heavily influenced, or were any similarities there just coincidence? Well, in all these cases, it depends who you ask...

There are definitely some mixed opinions about the word 'boutique' in the guitar world, and its use possibly becoming more common could make it an even weirder, more polarising term.
Obviously not. Every year it seems there's some claim about guitar or certain genres of music dying, and we all talk about to what extent it's just BS. But it generates some interesting thoughts, and there's a point to be made about 'guitar music' ending - but not in the way you think. Promise. Don't hate me. I can explain...
It's a good question. If these luthier-made guitars really are so good, then there'll be a bunch of great guitarists around the world playing them...right? I've already highlighted a bunch of amazing players who use 'boutique' guitars on this podcast, but it's something I want to do more to answer this question - so here are a couple of examples to start us off! Here's the video discussed in the episode:

It's not something you see often, but Spalt Instruments of Austria and Jersey Girl Homemade Guitars of Japan have come together to create a truly stunning and unique build. Could we see more collaborative high-end guitars in the future?
It's a pedal I've loved at every stage of my guitar-playing life so far - it's the only pedal I've ever gigged with, and many times it's been the only pedal I've needed when recording. I come back to this one again and again, and even after all this time, it still inspires me.

It's easy to get tunnel vision with our gear sometimes - certain guitars are for certain genres, specific amps are for specific sounds. But being more creative and open with what we have at our disposal is usually a much better approach. Seeing musicians demonstrate their own creative use of gear inspires this kind of approach, so here's one example that really caught my eye.
