Seersucker Explained

Seersucker, hickory stripe or railroad stripe is a thin, puckered, cotton fabric, usually striped or chequered, used to make clothing for hot weather. The word originates from the Persian words Persian: شیر and Persian: شکر, literally meaning "milk and sugar", from the gritty texture ("sugar") on the otherwise smooth ("milk") cloth.[1] This lightweight silk originated in colonial India and was introduced to the wider world from there.[2] Seersucker is woven in such a way that some threads bunch together, giving the fabric a wrinkled or puckered appearance. This effect is often achieved during weaving by feeding the warp threads for the puckered bands at a greater rate than the warp threads of the smooth stripes. (These are often of different colors but do not need to be.) The unevenness causes the fabric to be mostly held away from the skin rather than being plastered on it when wet with sweat, facilitating heat dissipation and air circulation. It also means that ironing is not necessary.

He is the author of ten books, published by Waldmann Press. These include: 'The Wittelsbach Dynasty', 'The Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt', and 'Cuzco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas.'

He just returned from his latest trip to Kenya and is currently promoting his brand new travel guide, 'Kenya - The Heart of Africa '.

Margaret Garland is a self-taught seamstress who has been sewing for more than 40 years. She took her education to the next level attending Morgan State Univ. and Baltimore Community College. After moving to Germany, was able to study at the Paris/American School of Design in Paris, France. Margaret is highly experienced in Fashion Design and Doll Artistry. Her work has been published in the Soft Dolls & Animal magazine and has been presented in small boutiques all over Baltimore.
Even with all that, her passion has always been teaching others how to sew. She has been a teacher for the Fashion Design Department at Baltimore City Community College and at FIT in North Carolina (NCSU). She has even volunteered to teach the elderly to sew in a nearby senior care facility. Her desire to teach has leapt out of her school and found its place in elementary schools, hospitals, and church events!
In 2016, she received an Entrepreneur Award from NANBPWC, Inc. and in 2019 She was awarded the Ms. Unstoppable Award. 2021, Margaret’s business was featured in the Alignable (a small business Referral Network) online newsletter and she was featured in the Wawak Finest sewing supplies. She is a member of the following organizations: American Sewing Guild Association of Sewing.
Margaret started this business to share her skills with others so they can begin their journey to create fashions their way. She wants to help them to become designers, entrepreneurs, seamstresses or sewing for themselves. She believes that everyone has a dream and if she can help someone towards their destiny then her job is done!

Meet Sage Alexander, a multifaceted creative born and raised in Temecula, California—just a short drive from San Diego but with dreams much bigger than his hometown. From a young age, Sage was drawn to the energy and possibility of big city life. In high school, his passion for fashion began to take shape thanks to a standout teacher who introduced him to sewing, style, and the art of spotting trends.

That passion led him to the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), where he majored in Visual Communications. While studying in Los Angeles, Sage immersed himself in the heart of the fashion industry, building a strong creative network and gaining hands-on experience through styling gigs with Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom.

Most recently, Sage brought his talents to a fashion agency as a graphic designer, working side-by-side with the art director. It was in that role that he discovered his true calling: creative and art direction. Now laid off, Sage is embracing this transition as an opportunity. He continues to pursue his dreams by screen printing and developing his own brand, all while searching for his next big opportunity.

Kenyon selected and attended the University of Maine for his education but he continued playing basketball then went on to graduate with a Bachelors in Business Management in 2002. After graduating, Glover began playing professional basketball in England, recognized for his skills was then picked up by the Milwaukee Bucks. His career was short lived, however, after three months due to a career-ending knee injury. Feeling devastated and unsure of his future, he attempted suicide.

The polka dot pattern has a history that dates back to the mid-1800s. It originated in Western Europe and quickly spread to America, becoming a decorative fashion trend in the late 19th century. However, the irregularly spaced dots in the pattern were initially associated with diseases like leprosy, syphilis, and smallpox.

The book was astounding!!!! It was a page turner that I admired!

Reading Russell Westbrook's book Style Driver's was entertaining and a true page turner. I enjoyed gazing at the looks he chose, the quotes from special people in his life, and how he feels about fashion.

Nya Syndab is a 2020 graduate of Spelman College where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. During her time at Spelman, Nya decided to compete in local pageants for scholarships to help pay for school. While competing, Nya was inspired to create an initiative, ‘A Life Regifted,’ that supports teenagers as they cope with the divorce and separation of their parents because of her own personal experiences as a child of divorce. Nya aspires to pursue a joint career in both medicine and law to further her advocacy for health disparities namely maternal health for minorities. In addition, with Nya’s experience with competing in both the Miss America system and the Miss USA system, she looks forward to becoming a pageant/talent coach to young girls who would like to compete in pageants as well.
