it’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and/or questioning (LGBTIQ+), pride month. and i will start by reminding you that the first pride was a riot. in the early morning hours of june 28, 1969, police initiated yet another raid at well known gay club called the stonewall inn in greenwich village, new york. this violent police raid on LGBTIQ+ folks- the majority of whom were Black and brown- led to six days of protest and violent clashes with police. especially as pride here in denver- and many places- has become very gentrified, it is important that we pay homage to and uplift the many Black and brown people that led the way at stonewall.

there is no better way to celebrate juneteenth-  no better way to honor the legacy of the Black liberation movement- than to continue the work of prison industrial complex abolition some 150 years later. yes, you read that right. it has been only 150 years since the first juneteenth. in my family, there are two generations between my father, and slavery. there is one generation between my grandmother, and her grandmother, who was born into slavery. she taught my grandmama how to garden. my grandmama taught me.

social justice organizers on the ground have made it clear again and again over the years: what is happening in palestine right now is not a “conflict.” that infers that there are two relatively “equal powers” fighting here, which is not even close to the reality. the reality is that the right wing israeli government- backed by an annual 4 billion dollars in military aid from the united states- is murdering and displacing palestinian people.

honestly, i’m not really excited about things opening back up “post-quarantine.” mostly because, i know that for many people, things opening back up means “back to normal.”

and our “normal” has never been normal. we deserve more and better than “back to normal.”
