Today we continue the series of short stories. Today’s tall tale is titled “College Freedom”. It tells the story of a mom dropping off her child at college and the feelings that come along with that. The freedom of college for the child but also for the parents. If you are a parent going through the exciting but hard time of letting your kids go then this story is for you. I hope you enjoy it. Here is it “College Freedom”

We are kicking off a new series today called Telling Tall Tales. In this series I will be sharing short stories I wrote on all different types of topics. I thought it was only fitting to begin with a story titled “The Beach Read”, since we are saying goodbye to summer. This is a fun story about a day at the beach for a midlife woman who has been feeling a little down but a chance encounter changes her perspective. Now for my listeners who know me well, or even those you may not, it may cross your mind during this series if these stories I have written are true or are about me. Well, let me just say this, like any tall tale there is a small grain of truth to it but I will leave it up to you to guess or ponder what that truth may be, and maybe you don’t see a piece of me in the story but instead you find a piece of you.

This is a podcast all about life and the work we do to enjoy it, thrive at it, and sometimes just survive it.

Today I am talking about freedom.  No this is not a July 4th, Independence day show.  I’m talking freedom from the one thing that I believe has control over most of us…our phones. Now before you jump ship on this show because you don’t want to hear all the statistics on why our amount of phone use is bad for our mental health, our relationships, our social interactions, our children, our society  I promise I will not be coming at you with that approach today. No, today I just want to share with you what I experienced during a four day trip in the mountains where cell service wasn’t available.

It's here, It is finally here.   It is summer.  This girl, Summer Amy,  is happy. Shorts on and sun kissed cheeks. I am here for it all.  Are you?  Have you made your plans, booked your vacation, planned your adventures?  I have,  but I have also made some different kinds of plans. Some plans to sit.  Today’s episode is a slow look at summer.  I take a moment to look at summer’s invitation to sit back and relax.  There is no better way to kick off this summer than with a clear perspective on what summer is all about.

Hello friends, I’m Amy Gray and this is Lately I’ve Been.  A show all about navigating life.  I share what I’ve been up to lately in hopes of building a connection, helping us feel a little less alone. Today I am talking about my body because something has been happening lately to my mind-body connection that I never noticed before.  Maybe because I was too busy, maybe because I had learned to tune it out or never learned to recognize it. But it is shouting at me now, sending me signals to be noticed. To pay attention. Today I talk about stretching to rebuild that connection.

Hello friends. Happy New Year. I am back, my voice is not really back but I’m here, and so excited for the year ahead. I’m working on a few new projects and lots of fun ideas for upcoming episodes. If you are new here, let me introduce myself. I am Amy Gray, host of Lately I’ve Been. I started this podcast with the idea of sharing my life, my struggles, my joys, my perspective in hopes that it would help someone out there feel less alone. Life can be hard, we can feel like we are facing battles and situations that no one else struggles with, but that is far from the truth. Social media might give you the highlight reel of other people's lives but you have to know there are battles, struggles, and stories behind those perfect pictures. Just like you face and just like I face. So throughout this year I will share what I’ve been facing lately, what I’m dealing with, what I’m working on, reflecting on. No highlight reel, just real life. And hopefully you will feel less alone, feel connected, empowered, supported, inspired, seen, encouraged. That is my hope for this podcast.

And I want you to know I see you.  I see all you do to pull this all together for those you love and in honor of that I give you the podcast classic, commercial free,  Lately I’ve Been Performing Magic.

Do the work.  That has been my mantra for the past four years. It is how I end each one of my episodes because if you want change, if you want to heal and move forward then you have to put it in the work.  But this year I have added a new mantra to my life: get uncomfortable.   Today we are going to explore how both of these powerful thoughts have shifted my life.

Two past episodes that explore more of this topic:

The time change is a change in our environment.  It shifts our evening environment from being dark at 5 to the sun being up hours later. This has an effect on our mood, our plans, our day.  There is power in the environment around us, and there are  changes we can make to set ourselves up  for success.  So let's jump in to Lately I’ve Been Changing my Environment.

I have to admit everything I have tried to write, record or post seems so unimportant or small, silly, compared to the war in Ukraine, my heart hurts for them, the world feels heavy.  But I also know that to stop and pour all our attention and thoughts on this war isn’t healthy either so for the next ten minutes or so let's distract ourselves.  Please enjoy my childhood memories of growing up Catholic and attending Catholic School in the 80’s

For the past two weeks we have been running a food drive in our hometown.  We have been posting daily to reach out for donations.  The amazing organization we are collecting for, Operation 143, fights childhood hunger.  The donations will go directly to kids in my community.  I feel very strongly about this cause and you may have noticed that I was posting repeatedly about the food drive.  Posting Posting Posting.  Reminding. Reminding. Reminding. This got me thinking about the power of a post.  Which then led me to do some posting of my own.  Which is the reason why lately I’ve been praying off a post-it.

During lockdown and the pandemic life many of us turned to comfort and coziness as a coping strategy.   We began living in a state of yes, yes to whatever made us feel good.  Food, shopping, social media, binge watching.  But how do we begin to come out of this state, maybe we begin by telling ourselves no.

Last week we talked about the feeling of our days being mundane,  the feeling of a time loop, repeating the same day, same tasks over and over.  This is life sometimes, we can fall into the trap of feeling like zombies or a robot knocking out our daily to do lists.  But today I want to talk about how those everyday tasks have a greater purpose and how that ties in with feeling small.

Over the past two years, or has it been three pandemic years, does anyone else feel like this has been the slowest time in your life, like time is frozen but at the same time it feels like it is just one big blur where time moved so quickly?   Anyway, for most of us this time, whether fast or slow,  the pandemic has created a feeling of  repetition.  Stuck in a time loop, repeating the same day with the same issues, with the same routine, day in and day out. Today we talk how to break the cycle.

Today’s episode is for my dog lovers and those sweet but sometimes crazy furry animals we live with.  In the Gray household we have had our fair share of pets over the years, two bunnies, two hamsters, hermit crabs, two cats, fish, two frogs and three dogs.  Currently though, we  have Vanilla, our cat that no one ever sees.  Parker, our sweet border collie mix, who we rescued from Alabama.  Her full name is Parker Belle Gray because she is a true southern belle.  And we very recently adopted Charlie, a goldendoodle puppy.  His adorable face will make you melt and he is settling in very nicely.  Parker Belle and Charlie Trigger are my inspiration behind this episode, especially Parker and her love of returning home.

Lately I’ve Been Scrooge.  I am not saying I’m Scrooge in a sense that I’m an old miser who hates Christmas, nor am I sitting by candlelight counting my gold coins.  I am Scrooge in the sense that I’m looking at Christmas past, Christmas present and Christmas Yet to come. Why? Because I think it may be the best  way to move forward in a healthy and joyful way.

We are all well aware of how hard life feels right now.  Living through a pandemic with so much division.   The world can be loud  and can pull you into feeling hopeless,  sad, anxious, angry, frustrated, confused, lost, and lonely.   If you are not careful the world can dictate your day to day well being and for me that is something I strive hard to fight off.  How, you might ask.  Well I turn to my faith.  And I thought there is no better time to share my faith than now, at Christmas.

Grief is a funny little emotion.  It is complicated and messy.  It shows up in different ways.  I guess that's why they say, Everyone grieves differently.  I mean think about it anger, happiness, sadness those are pretty clear emotions.  For the most part, You can identify them easily in others and in yourself. Oh but grief is something unique to each person.   I want you to keep that in mind as I share my story today.  What I feel is unique to me, it is how I’m walking through this time of loss.  Your journey might look completely different, and that's ok, just like it's completely ok that lately I’ve been holding sadness and peace in the same hand.

Season One Grand Finale! We are here and I’m excited to dive into this episode because we are looking back over our past topics and using them to build ourselves a tool box.   This will not be your typical toolbox, this one is full of resources to help us not only get through life but enjoy it more.  And who doesn’t want that.  Let's get to it, because lately I’ve been using tools.

I started this podcast with an idea.  To tell stories and reflect on life in hopes that it would help someone.  I thought that if I shared my story, the battles, the decisions, the tools I use to survive, someone might hear it and feel connected.  A listener who may feel alone in their battle might realize that someone else out there feels the same way.   Our circumstances may not be identical but at the heart of it our wants and needs are the same.  We want to be happy, we want to be loved, seen, heard, valued.  We need to know we are enough.

Over the past 18 episodes I have brainstormed, researched, wrote and rewrote. I have recorded and re-recorded hoping that what I was saying would make a difference, and in some way serve others.  Because that was the goal, that has been my goal for years.  Serve others well.  Love others well.

Remember the days of turning the dial to the exact spot to hear your favorite radio station.  Waiting for that song you loved to come on, hoping they would play it.  And when it finally came on you would crank the volume all the way up and just soak it in.  That song, that song sparked a feeling, or a memory, or a sensation that ran through your body and mind.  Music is powerful, which is why lately I’ve been turning up the volume.

As I record this podcast I am preparing my heart to say goodbye to a very close friend. She is moving away and will no longer be across the road.  She has been a neighbor, a walking buddy and a best friend.  Our friendship will continue but I will miss her so much.  Making friends can be so hard as you get older.   Finding your person,  finding people.  True friendship takes work, time and energy.  When life is busy or there is a pandemic,  building new friendships seems impossible.  Which is why lately I’ve been a bit lonely.

Have you ever run in a race?  Think back to when you were young, racing to the finish line to beat your siblings or classmates. Racing when you are young is simple.  You don’t have to train or stretch or loosen up.  You don’t run with the fear of falling or pulling a muscle.  You just hear GO and you are off and moving.  Full force.  No holding back.  Running as fast as you can to win.  Our pace is set by the other racers, pushing us to go faster.  If we win, great.  But if we lose we are left feeling like our pace was not enough. Life can be a lot like this, trying to push ourselves to move at a faster pace because of other racers.   That is why, Lately I’ve Been setting my own pace.
