As humans, we've got a lot of emotions and big feelings about things, and they aren't always good. It's painful to feel uncomfortable, angry, resentful, guilty. But there's something even worse: adding shame on top of it all.

In today's episode, Lara talks about clean pain vs. dirty pain, and how we can choose which one to deal with. It comes down to the negative thoughts and whether you're going to let yourself talk to you that way anymore.

If you think you're not enough, too slow, too much, need to get better, then Lara's three steps will help you clarify whether those thoughts are true or not.

This Episode is For You If:

  • You ever have the thought you should be doing more or you should be doing something better, or you should be further along
  • You think, "Why can't I just be better, do better, act better…"
  • You're holding back from your goals because you have a fear of failure, of rejection, of feeling bad

You feel guilty, you shame yourself for taking time out for self-care. The meaning has become so skewed over the years, but in reality when you take care of yourself, it's the BEST way to take care of everyone else in your life.

In this episode, you'll learn 3 guidelines for your own self-care, self-preservation practice that feeds and nourishes your mind, body and soul.

This Episode is For You If:

  • You're good at keeping commitments to other people but not yourself
  • Self-care becomes one more thing on your to do list that you can't get to
  • You think self-care takes too much time, money and energy
  • You view self-care as indulgent manis and pedis

"Caring for myself is not self-indulgent, its self-preservation."-Audre Lorde, Burst of Light

When you take time for you, time expands, it's like a "universal exchange of energy." You'll create more space, and come back rejuvenated and with a fresh new outlook to everything you do.

Self-care is a way of preserving yourself, and you may choose to take hours and hours where you may want to cook a "full meal" of self-care things. That is okay, but also recognize that the "protein bar option" of self-care is also available to you too.

Mentioned in this episode:

  • Audre Lorde

"Go Big or Go Home". Now I am someone who will never say this to you, or I try, not to. Now you've probably heard this. It's very cliché in the self-help area and for some people it works fantastic but that's not always the case.

I am happy that you are here today. We're talking about something that's always vulnerable and very raw for me. If you've been following along for a while, you know about my family and how we're dealing with autism and PDA.

I have already done an episode before which I hope helps bring a lot of peace and comfort and hopefully hope to families that find themselves in similar situations.

For Autism Awareness Month, I wanted to do a follow-up on creating a path when dealing with neuro divergencies.

Whether that is autism, PDA, or any other challenges that you have with your kids, I hope this episode helps you embrace the process of thinking outside of the box and following your intuition on a very deep level when you have nothing else to go by or no proof that things are going to work out.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • How trusting our intuition is necessary when facing uncertainty in parenting
  • The hope, humor, and deeper appreciation for the world of neurodiversity
  • Our story of battling PDA burnout and the unusual, gut-feeling path we took towards recovery
  • The need for patience and understanding in the diverse ways brains interpret instructions and the world around us
  • The historical mischaracterizations of autism and how evolving perceptions are shaping the treatment of autistic individuals

Two weeks ago today, I was in a ski accident and you all know how excited I was to be learning how to ski. I always think goals are linear, and I'm sure you experienced that as well. There might be a couple obstacles, but we'll work through that and then we'll achieve our goal.

But in reality, yes, that does happen, but more often than not we'll experience large detours along the way and it's very easy to become disappointed, discouraged and feel a lot of despair in those moments when the detours happen. I myself felt that way.

In this episode, I will share with you how we can take care for our emotional well-being when they do happen.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • Understanding that life's goals are not always linear
  • the 'RA-RA' method and how to use it to deal with emotions
  • Recognizing the negative effects of resisting or avoiding emotions
  • Ways to find moments for emotional care without needing extra time

When I think about the goal cycle, we're looking at it in four steps. The first is to decide, second is to implement, third is to celebrate, evaluate, and fourth is to try again. I signed up for ski lessons a couple years ago and I found out I was pregnant. Because of the complications with my pregnancy, I wasn't able to actually do the lessons and ended up cancelling them.

So, I'm bringing you on a journey today. I want you to see real time what this looks like and what it feels like when you're reaching goals. One year postpartum and I decided to learn how to ski again and I'm bringing you along with me to show you how the four steps happen and how it feels to actually do something about your goal.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • Strategies for dealing with setbacks, including planning for and learning from falls
  • Tips for setting and reaching new goals
  • The emotional rollercoaster that accompanies pushing beyond comfort zones
  • The concept of community support and its positive impact on personal growth

Today we are talking about goals and actually setting goals. And, as I've thought about this, one of the critical things that I teach in my program and that I coach people on is setting and achieving their goals to help them live their purpose. Now, a critical piece of that is what I call the goal cycle.

In this episode, we are going to talk more about building foundation before you can actually achieve a goal, to define what brings you joy and to discover what that purpose is with your joy. So tune in and get inspired to not only set intentional goals but to savor the growth that comes from every attempt, big or small.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • How to set goals that bring joy and lead to true accomplishment
  • Strategies for building a solid foundation for goal achievement
  • Techniques to rewrite subconscious narratives that hinder goal achievement
  • Balancing strategic action and emotional management when pursuing goals

As I've been thinking about you and thinking about my last year, I wanted to come clean on something. Some people sometimes hear me on the podcast and think that my life is perfect, that I'm doing everything right and that I'm reaching all of my goals.

But I wanted to just come clean on the fact that in 2023, I didn't set goals at all. I took a break from goals, and the reason why I want to share that is because there is this kind of underlying mindset that you always have to be growing and that works for some people, but also sometimes that doesn't work.

This episode is a testament to finding beauty in life's winters and the joy that comes from savoring the present.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • Taking breaks from setting goals and allow yourself a "non-growth year"
  • Strategies for living with purpose even when you're not pursuing new goals
  • Growth is not the only path to happiness
  • How to reassess goals to check if they are driven by true desire or simply habit

Sometimes God and the Universe has a funny way of poo poo-ing our plans, and that's okay. Yes, you may have created a plan, and maybe it didn't go the way you had hoped, but there's one guarantee: life will give you an opportunity to let go of your plan whether you like it or not, that's when the magic begins to happen.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • Trust that whatever path is happening for you now is the right one
  • Lara shares how she let go during her pregnancy to enlist the help of others
  • The more we trust, the more the universe provides exactly what we need
  • When we can handle any emotion, we remain open to receive the lesson
  • When things go "wrong" maybe it means we have to practice feeling certain emotions so we can uncover why they are there.

What's a guarantee in life, is that we will definitely feel emotions we don't like. Instead of spiraling into a shame vortex, we can cultivate peace and a deep level of trust through our willingness to turn adversity into magical gifts!

Ep 65 Create Gratitude by Letting Go of "Negative Gratitude"

Do you try to "look at the brighter side" anytime you feel negative emotions? If so, you are practicing "Negative Gratitude." Instead, take a deeper dive into your positive and negative emotions so that you can create a joyful gratitude practice that honors what you feel while fueling your daily life.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • The more we try to fix emotions we don't want, the more we amplify them
  • Why allowing others to be seen and heard is the most loving thing
  • "Looking at the brighter side" is not always the best advice
  • Emotions are simply vibrations in our body that we label "good/bad"
  • How to see feelings as waves that rise and then fall away
  • Feeling an emotion we don't like does not mean something has gone wrong
  • How to see emotions as cyclical and be willing to experience the full range
  • The most loving question we can ask before "spewing negative gratitude"
  • How deep breathing allows you to "blow into the vibration" of feelings
  • The 3 steps to create a daily "habit for living" gratitude practice

When we are willing to get in touch with the full range of negative and positive emotions, instead of trying to fix or push away, the more able we are to experience authentic gratitude for ourselves, and hold the most loving space for others so they can do the same.

Ep 45: The Compound Interest of Parenting

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the weight of parenting decisions, especially during the summer months? Are you constantly worrying about the long-term impact of your choices on your kids' future?

In this episode, I share my insights about effectively managing parenting decisions without getting bogged down by every single choice. I explain how our parenting decisions can have a compounding effect, just like our finances. I emphasize the importance of focusing on the present moment, rather than the next 20 years, in order to build trust and communication with our children.

We also address how to manage power struggles between parents and kids, and how to recognize when our own subconscious thoughts and behaviors may be contributing to these struggles.

This Episode is For You If:

  • In the moment of parenting your child, you are thinking about their future and fear that if you don't hold your ground on a particular issue, your kids won't learn a particular lesson.
  • You feel like certain parenting decisions have the weight of the next 20 years and that if you "give in" to something, your child won't turn out to be a responsible, caring human.
  • You have a distinct physical response or reaction when you feel like your child is being disrespectful to you, leading you to snap at, yell, or give consequences to your child.

As we explore the compound interest of parenting and the importance of teaching healthy disagreement, I challenge you to consider when you want your children to disagree with you and how you're teaching them to do so in a constructive way.

By doing this hard but rewarding work, you'll not only transform your family dynamics but also experience a shift in your own mindset.

Ep 42: 5 Steps to Being More Present in Your Life

If you're constantly saying to yourself "I want to be more present," you're discrediting everything that you are already doing that creates the presence you seek.

You get trapped in this framework of "not enough-ness," and the drive to do more, be more becomes a tiring cycle, and that in order to check off the good mom box, you have to be fully engaged every moment of every time of the day.

This episode invites you to really step back, and ask yourself: why am I not actually present right now?

When you tune in, you'll learn these 5, easy to put into practice steps: noticing, pausing, giving your brain something to solve, breathing in the moment, and how to give your brain a focused container of time to practice presence.

This Episode is For You If:

  • You have said you want to be more present in your life
  • You feel bad that your mind is wandering when you're with loved ones
  • You have a hard time turning your brain off
  • You forgot who you were before you had kids
  • You think you'll feel less guilty once you master being more present

You can give yourself permission to add these daily little on-the-go moment to moment bits of awareness, and even just a minute or two is progress.

When you test drive these easy steps to be more present, you just may catch yourself by surprise and notice without even trying that you have more presence in your life.

Ep 41: 3 Guidelines to Effective Self-Care

Ep 38: Goals are Just Decisions in Disguise Part 2In today's Part Two of "Goals Are Really Just Decisions in Disguise," Lara's diving in with a solid, actionable plan that you can incorporate today (for anything you are reaching toward). The decision-making cycle will help you step out of the emotions that hinder your decisions, help you take an objective view of the negative stories you might have. It's about getting clear so that you can troubleshoot ahead of time. Listen in as Lara shares the four steps in the decision-making cycle that just might change how you see the G-word.

This episode if for you if:

  • You try to avoid failure and increase your successes
  • You are "always trying to do it right" so you don't waste your time, money, or energy

  • Other people think you are reaching goals, but you don't think you are doing a good job at it
  • At the very end of reaching a goal, you're desperate for a break and don't even want to think about reaching goals

If you're struggling with making decisions, with keeping commitments to yourself, it just means you need to tweak some things in your brain a bit. Do any of those sound like things you've said before? Ep 31: How to Keep a Clean Home

Are you a mom who goes all-in on what you love, but you don't have the systems built within your home and then before you know it, things get really cluttered and out of control?

If you find yourself getting so overwhelmed to the point where it actually stops you from progressing forward, listen in as Lara shares a process that will help you put a plan into place, say good-bye to clutter and overwhelm, and hello to a happy, harmonious home.

This episode is for you if …

  • The messes in your house are yelling at you
  • The more you try to juggle, the messier and more disorganized things get
  • You yell at and shame your parter and kids for not "helping"
  • You think you need to reorganize everything before working on a goal

When you think of your home like the zones of a sprinkler, you can figure it out based on the time you choose or have to give to it, not what needs to be done, but the time you choose to spend doing it. Then you can decide which zones in your home need to be "watered" most.

When you think of your home as a cyclical process, and not as an end destination that feels like a giant mountain to climb, the heaviness and overwhelm subside.

Ep 23 Letting Go of Doing It RightSometimes God and the Universe has a funny way of poo poo-ing our plans, and that's okay.

Bonus Episode: Busy Moms' Book Club : Quiet, the Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking by Susan McCain.

If you identify as an introvert, you're in good company with Eleanor Roosevelt, Gandhi and Rosa Parks and Warren Buffet to name a few.

Every month, The Busy Moms' Book Club meets virtually over Zoom. You do not have to read the book to join. I read the book, then will teach it to you and how to apply it.

It's the best because you can get ALL the goodness books have to offer in an hour. Because we all know you loved Cliff Notes for your book reports as a kid ;)
You'll know this book is for you if ...

  • You dislike small talk, and would rather discuss “deep” topics you care about
  • You need downtime after spending time with others, even if you loved it
  • You feel like the “noise” of motherhood and life is a lot for your body
  • You feel like you are flawed for not being more sociable

In this book club, I will share with you the history, research, and examples of the difference between extroverts and introverts; and how harnessing your introverted superpowers can help you change the world.

In a nation of extroverts we are told to be "bold" as an individual, and that if we are not, the underlying message is that we are fundamentally flawed, and therefore not as good as someone who is more outgoing.

Instead, Quiet shows us how to honor who we are, and see that we can succeed and be happy and embrace our introversion, instead of shunning it.

Ep 19 Create Gratitude by Letting Go of "Negative Gratitude"
