Welcome back to a VERY low res, VERY rough cut of the Always Gaining podcast.

After a long hiatus, I felt motivated to record an episode after my journaling session this morning.

I don't know if the podcast is returning full time... nevertheless, in this episode I speak about:

  • How being truly fed up is how you make change
  • What journaling did to get me there
  • Why I have commitment issues with new habits
  • How I'm overcoming those issues

In this episode, I speak about why I've been feeling "off" my game recently. I detail:

  • The type of struggles I've been facing
  • Why I think I've been off my game
  • The "aha" moment I had as a result of a great workout
  • What you can do if you're in the same situation

This episode is off the top of my head, so I hope you like the unfiltered take on what you should do if you're not feeling like yourself.

In this episode, I do something different and go COMPLETELY unscripted. I talk about my recent struggles with anxiety and really get in-depth on:

  • Why I think we have anxiety
  • Why the holidays seem to make it worse
  • My personal revelation on how to deal with anxiety
  • How vulnerability can be the key to helping you with your anxiety
  • How to pick yourself up by your bootstraps and stop being the victim

Quite honestly, the idea of doing an unscripted episode terrified me but it has been one of the most beneficial experiences for me so far with this podcast. I would really appreciate any and all feedback as this was a learning experience for me.

In this episode, I talk about why I'm generally against New Year's Resolutions. I dive into the nitty-gritty of:

  • Why we should treat resolutions like habits
  • An overview of why most people fail their resolutions
  • The four rules of behavior change to make habits stick
  • The three reasons I see behind why most people fail resolutions
  • Outcome versus identity-based goals

This episode is critical to me as we cruise through this holiday season with a new year right around the corner. I want to help others make meaningful change, no matter when or where they are at. Hopefully, this episode is a step in the right direction.

In this episode, I’m joined by my great friend and fellow University of Alabama C&IS alum, Eryn Cooper.

Eryn is a multimedia journalist in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She’s worked previously with the ESPN/SEC Network, the NFL’s Washington Football Team Broadcast Network, and National Geographic.

We discuss with Eryn the challenges of being a journalist in 2020 and the common reason we both got into our respective fields.

We review:

  • What critical thinking is
  • Why there seems to be a lack of it in our society as a whole
  • Eryn's tidbits on becoming better-informed people
  • Transparency as an element of trustworthiness in sources
  • Body image vs vanity and its necessity, especially in a performance role
  • The pressure to fit a societal mold
  • Balancing meeting expectations and carving your own path

This is a deep podcast, but I think it’s well worth the listen.

In this podcast, I review my experience with the 10,000 calorie challenge.

I go over the point of doing the challenge, what I ate, how I felt, and review how my weight changed during and after the challenge. You can also check out my IGTV video to see a whole recap of the day of eating!

This calorie challenge and my experience aim to prove a few key dieting principles:

  1. Calories are the king of fat loss versus fat gain
  2. No matter how bad you mess up a day of eating, you can get right back on track
  3. The scale is just a tool, it's not something to fear or a measure of your worth
  4. Your weight is always going to fluctuate, it’s normal

Disclaimer: I really wouldn’t recommend the average, everyday person to try this. I’m not a doctor or a nutritionist, but I wouldn’t assume this is healthy. Don’t force feed food, I am NOT endorsing that you eat 10,000 calories in an attempt to lose weight. When I mean eating 10,000 calories can help YOU, I mean that ME eating 10,000 calories is something YOU can learn from for your own goals!

I hope you enjoy this episode. If you have any questions or comments about the challenge or your diet journey, hit me up on Instagram @austintreygoodwin

In this podcast, I give you the 411 on dieting. Understanding calories, macronutrients, different dieting approaches, diet fads, my approach to dieting, and of course, how to structure a diet with macros that work for you.

I go over the basics of calories: calorie maintenance, surplus and deficit, as well as what the pros and cons in each of those caloric approaches are. From calories, I explore macronutrients, what each macro does for the body, as well as the foods that are heavy in a particular macronutrient.

Then I jump into fad diets that consume our social media and the tabloids: keto, paleo, fasting, and many more. From there, I explain the flexible dieting approach that I take and the importance of building a healthy relationship with food.

Finally, I review my self-named Bamboo Principle in dieting and give you the tools to understand what’s important when it comes to your diet, then I do a segment on sample macros a person could have with my approach. With these macros, I speak briefly on weighing yourself as a critical component to understanding your calories.

In this episode, I celebrate my 24th birthday by going over 24 life lessons that have shaped me into the person I am today. This is the culmination of months of notes and ideas, so I believe there’s great insight in this episode.

These lessons revolve around the Always Gaining principles of getting better mentally, physically and emotionally.

My top five lessons from the 24 are as follows:

  1. Calmness should be the first emotion you strive for
  2. There is endless power in saying “Why?”
  3. 1% > 100%
  4. Gratitude is a muscle we should workout every day
  5. Memento Mori

I hope you enjoy find tons of value in this episode. Let me know on social which lesson you agree with the most or find the most value in, @austintreygoodwin on Instagram! I’ll share my favorite responses on my story.

Also check in to the end of the podcast to hear about some great people who have impacted my life, I wouldn’t be who I am without these people. Thanks for listening!

In this podcast, I explore the three main reasons fitness sucks for most people, AKA why we can't stick with a routine in our diet and exercise

I explore the "some people are just lazy and complacent" argument for why fitness doesn't work, and explain why we can't use this excuse as the catchall for the REAL underlying reasons fitness sucks for most people.

These "real" reasons are:

  1. Personal imbalances in the approach and inconsistency
  2. Doing too much, too fast
  3. Setting unrealistic goals and lack of systems

We use the three elements of fitness (exercise, diet, personal health) to break down the cause of these reasons, discussing the ideas of perfectionism as a barrier, having an overnight mentality, as well as confusing what to do in the micro vs macro.

Sprinkle in some quick tips to achieve balance and harmony no matter where you're at in your approach, and we have the recipe for the Episode 3 cocktail. I hope you enjoy and find value in this episode. If you like the episode please leave a review or share on your socials (tag me @austintreygoodwin)!

In this episode, I explore how to become more practically positive and how to maintain an upbeat spirit, regardless of what's happening in the world.

I speak on deploying passion, gratitude, perspective, and habit building as action items of a positive lifestyle.

I bring up different examples in my own experience, such as my love for the gym and my work, as well as other's experiences to highlight why passion is important; I explain that we all have unique individual experiences, and our hardships/challenges should empower us; perspective setting also ties many of these ideas together.

Finally, I tie fitness and the discipline involved in a fit lifestyle into how everyone, fit-minded or not, can apply discipline and anchors into their own lives. Habit building is an integral part of positivity, as I discuss how habits fundamentally define the type of person we are.
