Adults teaching other adults. It's so different than teaching children. Children are fresh, always learning new things so being taught comes natural to them. Adults come with their own life experiences. They know their learning styles and they also may experience fear or resistance to learning new things.

Confidence coach and public speaking aficionado Amber Rose West sits down with yoga teacher Kim Richardson to discuss the skills needed to be an adult teacher to adult students.

The conversation is heavily based around yoga, because Kim is a yoga teacher, however, many of the things we discuss can be useful for teachers in any field

HIGHLIGHTS

• Creating spaces where people feel calm enough to be open when learning new things

• Becoming a teacher to represent others who resonate with you

• Making learning more accessible

• Adults often fall into the "I tried it once and didn't like it...so I'm never doing it again." How do we help adults embrace being students that explore?

• Learning something new will take practice and you should be able to practice your own way.

• Children have extreme courage when learning. How do we as teachers instill that courage in our adult students?

• When practice becomes performative, it drains you. How to do you shift away from being performative to genuinely practicing?

• Why do we shame ourselves or others for using supportive tools while we're learning?

• The best ways to create community around what you're learning

Teaching adults is different than teaching children. Children are learning things for the first time so teachers take their time, are slow during demonstration, and have more amounts of patience and compassion during their learning process. As adults, we sometimes lose the important parts of teaching that truly allow another to absorb and understand what is being taught to them.

If you're an adult teaching other adults, this episode is for you! Join public speaking aficionado and confidence coach Amber Rose West as she breaks down the best speaking techniques for adults teaching other adults.

Most of us want to find a career that brings us enjoyment and fulfillment, something we're passionate about that makes a meaningful impact. Maybe you're still looking, or maybe you have the career but wonder if you have what it takes to translate the work you do into your own business.

Betting on yourself to start your own business starts with self-confidence, and in this episode, Amber Rose West is joined by Zandra Webb, Founder, and CEO of ZEducation, LLC. With 20 years of experience as an educator, administrator, and education coach, Zandra started her business to help educators grow and maximize their potential, both professionally and personally. She is committed to empowering through self-love, self-duplication, and self-improvement.

Zandra and Amber dive into how self- is the critical foundation to entrepreneurship and talk at length about the role higher education does and doesn't play when it comes to careers.

Highlights in this episode:

  • Zandra talks about her journey from working for someone else to working for herself. She knew her content but didn't know if she knew business.
  • A "confidence spark" comes when all of a sudden you believe in yourself to do something for yourself that you've always only done for other people.
  • Zandra and Amber talk about the normal emotion of fear when starting a business. Zandra describes how she managed her fear and relied on her connection with God and with other women of color who were experiencing similar roadblocks.
  • Zandra shares how she stays confident and motivated in her business, including daily affirmations and the belief that if she doesn't walk in her purpose, she is doing a disservice to someone else.
  • Amber points out that social media helps entrepreneurs connect with others and that it's a powerful tool for knowledge sharing.
  • Continuing education and professional development are very important for leaders, especially women of color, as they seek to "keep up" with their male counterparts.
  • Remember to invest in yourself as an entrepreneur. Zandra's advice for entrepreneurs: get a mentor or a group you can learn from.
  • The two discuss the role of higher education and its value, whether or not your career is in the field you studied.
  • If you feel like you're not learning from all the hours you're putting in on "YouTube University," your confidence is going to plummet; spending a bit of money to get a coach or mentor is invaluable.

Self-care is a term we hear a lot, often paired with social media posts of someone doing something nice for their body, like getting a massage or mani-pedi. But less talked about and less sexy is the kind of self-care that focuses on our inside - our mental health, which affects our confidence and the way we show up for ourselves and others.

In this episode, communications expert Amber Rose West will give you two essential and transformative self-care practices that you may never have heard of before. Put these in your rotation to maintain higher levels of self-confidence in yourself, in your head, in your emotions, and in your mental state. Instead of a “fake-it-til-you-make-it” strategy in which you portray confidence you don’t really feel, Amber, teaches you how to exude authentic confidence that comes from the inside out.

These two practices will help you be more attractive, not just in your appearance but in the energy you have in your life. They will help you attract more positive people and opportunities and build more happiness and fulfillment.

Highlights in this Episode:

  • Amber talks about the study of communications and how her specialty is intrapersonal communication - how we communicate with ourselves.
  • In this consumer society, everyone profits when we hate ourselves. To be happy, we are told we need to buy something, or we participate in activities that only temporarily make us feel good - like eating or binge-watching Netflix.
  • It can be difficult for ambitious women to admit that they engage in negative self-talk.
  • Part of being a confident woman is taking accountability for the way that you treat yourself.
  • Negative self-talk are things that keep you stuck and don’t serve your highest self.
  • Usually, our self-bullying manifests in small things throughout the day, but small actions lead to big impact.
  • Amber explains how to do an inventory of self-hate and recommends writing down every bad thing you say to yourself for 30 days.
  • Create a happiness file in which you keep evidence of doing good and things that can combat your negative self-talk.
  • Loving yourself more is important - but that idea can be very overwhelming if you’re struggling to like yourself. But liking yourself can be small daily actions that will prepare you for the climb of loving yourself.
  • When we open the door to liking ourselves, others will start to like us too.
  • Amber gives concrete ideas on how to like yourself and what to say to help you reinforce this positive behavior.

Confidence coach and communications expert Amber Rose West pulls back the veil about being a confident woman and the four main things you need to know as you start your personal development journey to become a confident woman.

Being confident is not a one-size-fits-all prescription. It’s a highly personalized, continuous journey that starts from the inside. Your first step to becoming confident is to learn what makes YOU feel confident. Then, it’s important to learn how to communicate your needs with those around you. This episode is the perfect starting point to learn about how you can create sustainable self-confidence while expressing it as your authentic self.

If you’ve been putting off self-care or personal development work because you’re too busy taking care of others, or you feel like you don’t have time or the money, it’s time to let go of those misconceptions and realize you can do significant work (without spending a dime) in just 5-10 minutes a day. And if you need someone in your corner, Amber Rose West is here cheering you on!

Highlights In This Episode:

  • Some women fear becoming too confident because they are afraid of losing people in their life or what others will do or say as you uplevel.
  • Learning to communicate our needs with others in our lives is important.
  • Amber uncomplicated the process of gaining confidence, while others (even other coaches) tend to overcomplicate it.
  • Trying to feel confident 100% of the time is unrealistic, especially if you want to have a genuine, compassionate, and symbiotic experience with the people in your life.
  • Learn the importance of what to do when confidence escapes you.
  • Your habits, the people around you, and your environment are the most important impactful things when it comes to your confidence.
  • It is your responsibility to teach people how to treat you, and the most powerful tool you have is communication.
  • Environments can help or hinder your growth, including having a space for yourself at home and a safe place online with a curated social media feed that fills your bucket.
  • There are two types of people that you need to unfollow: those who are negative and those who make you feel bad about yourself because you feel like you’re comparing yourself with them.

Confidence coach and communication expert Amber Rose West is joined by April Jefferson “AJ” to talk about discovering your authentic self and how to support each other as women of color as we learn who we truly are and as we share ourselves online or in real life.

As young girls, Black women are often taught that it’s their role to provide for others above all else. As the only daughter and the oldest of her siblings, AJ was taught it was her responsibility to help take care of her younger brothers, even after she had left home and started her own family.

Learn how she broke away from the “others first” mindset and tapped into her Black girl magic - losing 85 lbs and finding herself in the process. Discover how you can take your power back, too, gain confidence, and set important boundaries without tapping into the stereotypes that often follow Black women and steal our ability to stand up for ourselves.

Highlights in this Episode:

  • AJ talks about her background and how she is rooting for women, especially WOC.
  • The two talk about how Black families typically don’t teach boundaries very well, if at all.
  • Why self-care is so important and discovering what self-care means to you.
  • How weight loss empowered AJ to help others learn that taking care of your health is not selfish, it’s crucial.
  • The two get real about unrealistic expectations from family and generational patterns that they want to see broken.

-No matter how trapped you may feel, you have the choice to make yourself a priority. * Others are also afraid of seeing you change because it means you may not be there for them. * Surround yourself with people who are aligned with you and detach from those who drain you. * How writing and journaling can not only help you develop yourself but can become a work of art. * The two talk about AJ’s book, “Allowed to Be Me,” which she wrote after a particularly low time in her life. * How AJ wants to be known for making people uncomfortable because that is the only way to create change. * Why women are afraid to change, even if it doesn’t serve them to stay in their old habits.

Confidence coach and communication expert Amber Rose West is back for a powerful season three, helping you create and express self-confidence as a woman of color. In this episode, Amber answers a common question of why she chose to focus on the topic of confidence and women of color - particularly Black women. The short answer is simple: empowering black women is a win for all women.

Black women suffer a confidence problem, and it’s no wonder why. Black women have spent their lives trying to overcome consistent attempts at erasure, oppression, silencing, and discrimination. Living life with generational trauma and stigmas takes a lot of time and energy, patience, sisterhood, and support.

When we empower black women and encourage them to create and express authentic self-confidence, they are able to break free from stereotypes and rise to the top. Black women consistently show up and fight for the common good, and as they rise, they amplify the voices of all women. Learn more about why in this episode.

Highlights in this episode:

  • Amber talks about her reasons for starting the Women of Color and Confidence podcast.
  • Today’s generation of black women are more determined than ever not to pass down generational trauma.
  • Because they suffer daily oppression through overt racism and microaggressions, black women know what it’s like to be kept down and don’t tolerate it happening to others.
  • Black women are great leaders because they have to work twice as hard and be twice as credentialed to be considered equally qualified. (Anyone watches Katanji Brown Jackson’s hearings?)
  • Historically, black women are nurturers, and they truly care and are able to identify promise in others.
  • Struggle and burnout are no longer a prerequisite to success.
  • The new generation values cooperation over competition and sees the power in sisterhood.
  • The more we support each other, the less we allow the erasure of our black girl magic!
  • Black women are infectious and inspiring. A win for us is a win for all!

While my intention for episode 15 with Angela was to talk about pivoting careers, it was brought to my attention after the show that...we didn’t really touch on that as much as we did being a black woman in a white workspace.

The response I received was “but we WANTED to hear about pivoting careers in later years and y’all barely touched on it!”

And I hear you!

I've retitled E15 Being Black in a White Workspace, because that is what we talked about on that episode, and this week, for episode 16, we will dig into Pivoting Careers in Later Years, and this time I promise not to stray ;)

For episode 16, she and I talk about what may make someone want to change from an 9-5 to self-employment, how age places a role in that decision making, and how working women are treated in our society when they get to certain age milestones.

EDIT - the title of this episode has changed.

While my intention for this chat with Angela Calvin was to talk about pivoting in careers in later years, it was brought to my attention after the show that...we didn’t really touch on that as much as we did being a black woman in a white workspace.

The response I received was “but we WANTED to hear about pivoting careers in later years and y’all barely touched on it!” And I hear you!

My job as a facilitator of these conversations is to deliver the chat promised in the title and I understand, we strayed. SO! After speaking about this with Angela, I asked if she’d be willing to come back on the show with the mindful intention to bring that chat we originally were going to have.

Please check out E16: Pivoting Careers in Later Years, and enjoy E15 about Being a Black Woman in a White Workspace - and equally powerful talk!

There has been an aspect of fear that follows around women at work. We've been taught to find jobs that pay well, stay at jobs we dislike because who else will hire us? Black women aren't taught the idea of job security. In fact, we are taught that at any moment, something like our natural hair style is grounds for termination without cause.

We stay at job we dislike with organizations that undervalue us because we're not sure what other job, if any, awaits us.

I'm very excited to invite Angela Calvin onto the show to talk about the empowerment and happiness fulfillment that can come from changing careers, even in your later years. It's never too late to start doing something you enjoy!

Warning! This episode got real & personal - real personal!

In a genuine moment of our guest sharing her validation and support for the work that I do, I broke down and cried. Unscripted and completely authentic, it couldn't have happened on a more appropriate episode. Even as someone who teaches about confidence and self-esteem, I wonder about the strength of my impact sometimes. As displayed here, the support of the women around me often throws me off guard. In the realness, I had support in my emotional release as well.

This episode, I welcome back Courtney Fullwood (previously from E04) for this very important conversation about why and how black women can support each other. This includes squashing the "you're so strong" stereotype, embracing collaboration vs competition, and learning when to pass the mic, especially in a room full of opportunity.

Listen in and enjoy this powerfully charged discussion!

This conversation with Kloii Hummingbird gets right to the point! A call to white people to take accountability for the racist/racial situations and conversations you find yourself in without needing validation from the black people in your life. This is not a time for you to turn to black women to express understanding or ask for commiseration. In your personal ives, with the people closest to you, is your opportunity to put your promises to work. Ending white supremacy and racism in this country requires that you not turn away from your family and friends when they lean into racial inequality. Dragging black women along with you is hurting us while we are already badly bruised. Listen to this week's episode as Kloii and I cut to the truth of the damage this is doing to black women and the black community.

Shannon and I sat down to talk about the spaces we "don't belong in" or are the only people like ourselves in those spaces.

Shannon is a black + plus-size aerial artist who had the confidence to try something new and the ability to fall in love with aerial arts despite the gyms, the silks, the lyras often being occupied by a very specific body type. Looking around her studio and seeing no people of color and only the typical slim, lean body types and rather than be swayed away, she decided to keep training.

She advocates for people of color and all body types to engage the arts and promotes the idea of loving your body, always, for what it can do without the assumption that your body can't do things if it doesn't look like "that.”

I sat down with Michanne Bohanon to discuss how black families can gain financial literacy and, as a result, start developing generational wealth that has been denied to us for way too many generations! Michanne brings a dynamic perspective to financial planning and wants to make sure black women and their families have confidence in their financial future.

Being confident isn’t just about being a confident woman. It’s about having confidence in all aspects of your life including your bank account. I believe it’s so important to have black female representation in the financial industry for those of us who want to be financially independent and free women.

Enjoy! Thanks for listening.

I was unable to sit down with my cousin as planned but I still wanted to come on and address a topic we had planned to talk about - black girls being bullied at school.

As a black woman who grew up being endlessly teased for my black features, it broke my heart to hear my young cousin is experiencing the same thing. Teasing a classmate because of their skin tone or the texture of their hair is racism. Parents don't want to acknowledge that racial bullying is racism against our youth. And while you may not want to admit your child would do that, racial bullying is steady happening to black girls in every city and state in the USA. How can we stop it?

The hair of a black woman.

Everyone wants to touch it.

I've had people grab me, touch me, and pet me without asking in grocery stores, at parties, waiting for the light to change, while working in an office or at a bar.

Random strangers have grabbed my hair without asking and it always feels like such a violation.

So what's the big deal about it?

In this episode, I share a piece I believe explains it really well while also giving everyone more insight into why the simple question "Why can't I touch your hair?" is offensive and equally damaging to our spirits as it is to our curls.

Growing up, it always seemed like I had to choose.

For white people, I was too black. For black people, I was too white.

I was never given an education on being both. Nor did the world tell me it was OK to be both.

Our country has more biracial people in it than ever before so this topic is important for adults still struggling with racial identities, as well as making sure we're understanding the potential struggle our biracial children may experience.
