What an honor to have with us this week, on the Rick Flynn Presents podcast, professional basketball star Dean Tolson a power forward and #20 for the Seattle Supersonics (Ret.). Dean Tolson was one of the top prep basketball players in the state of Missouri his junior and senior years at Central High School in Kansas City. So, when the colleges came running, he accepted a full ride to the University of Arkansas. Despite being unable to read or write, he went on to be one of the most prolific players to grace the Razorbacks’ campus. In 1974, Tolson was the first basketball player to be drafted by both the NBA and the ABA, having been selected by the Seattle Supersonics and the New York Nets, respectively, ultimately playing for the legendary Bill Russell in Seattle. Following his basketball career, Tolson made the courageous decision to re-enroll at the University of Arkansas, and repeated all four years, this time legitimately. At the age of fifty-two, he returned to the university for three more years, earning a master’s degree and graduated magna cum laude. Tolson’s gripping story from his childhood in an orphanage to his academic achievements is not only an indictment of a system that would just “pass you along” from grade to grade as a hot basketball prospect without any educational accountability, but also an inspiring story of overcoming great odds to find success. DR. STEPHEN COHN is a 40-year veteran Trauma Surgeon and the author of "All Bleeding Stops - Life & Death in the Trauma Unit." Dr, Cohn was a surgeon in the United States Army Medical Corps during Operation Desert Storm. He was the Chief of Trauma & Surgical Critical Care at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Stephen Cohn is the recipient of "Teacher of the Year" awards at Boston University, University of Massachusetts, Yale University, Northwell Health and he holds a Lifetime in Education Award from the University of Miami Department of Surgery.

Larry Jorgensen first became fascinated with Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and its unique history while writing and reporting for television news in Green Bay. However, his journey into that world of news had begun much earlier in northern Wisconsin where he worked during high school for the weekly newspaper in Eagle River. Later he was employed by a newspaper publisher in Milwaukee, and then on to radio and television news in Texas and Louisiana, along with wire service and freelance assignments. During all those years he looked forward to return visits to the Keweenaw Peninsula. During one of those visits, Larry discovered the tale of the wreck of the City of Bangor. Learning of that little-known event resulted in his decision to create this written account, which he hopes would share the story of one of Lake Superior’s most unusual shipwrecks.

She is the founder and president of World Unity, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to making a continuing and lasting contribution towards the elimination of all forms of racial, ethnic, religious and cultural bigotry, prejudices, discrimination and biases.
Sara’s knowledge and understanding of diversity comes from her rich experience growing up in America at a time when there were very few Asian Americans. Throughout her life she has confronted the issue of diversity. Her activism to advance equality came alive through the Sun poem she wrote in a personal journal in 1978, a poem that then became the cornerstone of city-wide multi-media public service campaigns promoting racial and ethnic harmony in Boston, New York City and Providence, Rhode Island. She designed a diversity and inclusion workshop that uses poetry and has presented it to organizations across the U.S. She also served 20 years as a poet-in-residence, teaching students at the elementary grade level the art of writing poetry, and developed a workshop with the “Sun” poem to teach students equality.

Amy O’Shaughnessy, Co-Founder of George’s Rockstars says “The song is in memory of our gorgeous boy George and is inspired by his journey with music therapy during treatment for childhood leukemia. We lost George in 2019 and we wanted to help other children like him who spend far too much time in hospital. Our mission is to bring music to every child in hospital across the UK.”
George was diagnosed with leukaemia at just 22 months old in November 2014, aged just 22 months old. During his near 5-year battle, he sadly relapsed 4 times and after having all the treatment there was available including high dose chemotherapy, total body and cranial radiotherapy, bone marrow transplant and revolutionary CART T cell therapy, George passed away at home in August 2019, surrounded by his family. George adored music and nature and had a huge zest for life and an infectious smile and character.
The charity was inspired by George’s experience with music therapy during intensive treatment at Bristol Children’s Hospital. Pamela Hopkins was invited to appear on Rick Flynn's podcast "Rick Flynn Presents: Confessions of a Show Biz Kid" when, by accident, after being pitched some other artist's material to promote and consider for guest appearances, her material was recommended and somehow found its way into the pile of guest artists we were considering for appearances on the show. Anne Butler Montgomery has worked as a television sportscaster, newspaper and magazine writer, teacher, author, and amateur sports official. Her first TV job came at WRBL-TV in Columbus, Georgia, and led to positions at WROC-TV in Rochester, New York, KTSP-TV in Phoenix, Arizona, and ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut, where she anchored the Emmy and ACE award-winning SportsCenter. Today, I no longer feel the need to use alcohol as a band-aid to distract me from reality. I now have the ability to accept and adjust to any changes or challenges that would have caused me to stress out before I learned to live mindfully and make meditation a daily gift I give to myself.
I'm not going to lie, it wasn't an easy journey. I had to do some serious work on myself, and it took a lot of time and dedication. But the payoff has been incredible. I feel more connected to my life, and I'm able to handle stress in a much healthier way.
Mental health is no joke. It's just as important as physical health, and it's time we start treating it that way. I hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to seek the help they need and find the tools that work for them. After all, we're all in this crazy journey of life together!

July 1967. After the arrest, beating, and imprisonment of cab driver John Smith by local police, the city of Newark―already a tinderbox―became a hotbed of protest and retaliation. Over five long days, 26 people were killed by police gunfire and hundreds more were injured, thousands arrested, and millions of dollars in property damage caused. The scars on the city remained for decades.
The most shocking thing about the photos in the book is that, over the last few years, exactly the same scenes have been playing out before us in cities across the US. 'BUDDY'S BACK' is the new single from the legendary ALLAN CARKE and GRAHAM NASH, made all the more special and poignant, as it's the first time they have been heard harmonizing on a new track together in decades. The song is written by Graham and reflects their childhood friendship and musical influences. Both from Salford, Allan and Graham were founder members and original vocalists of Manchester band, THE HOLLIES. They went on to shape pop music throughout the 1960s and became one of the most successful bands of all time, enjoying hit after hit, with top chart singles such as 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother', 'The Air That I Breathe', 'Bus Stop and 'Carrie Anne'. In fact in 1978, The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles confirmed that The Hollies had achieved "more hits than any other British group" (even more than The Beatles!). Graham famously left The Hollies in 1968 to pursue a massively successful career with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Neil Young, plus as a solo artist. The Hollies' music is still as much loved today as it was back in the 1960's and 1970s. The Hollies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

Louis Prima Jr. is a singer, musician and bandleader known for his energetic and over-the-top performances with his boisterous New Orleans-style band The Witnesses. Prima Jr. is the son of legendary singer and entertainer Louis Prima. Louis Prima Jr. and The Witnesses was formed in 2006 and have been performing to sellout crowds around the world ever since. The rowdy, horn-driven 10-piece band has recorded two albums, “Return of the Wildest!” (2012) and “Blow” (2014), both on the Warrior Records label and distributed by Universal Music Group. “Return of the Wildest!” features Prima Jr. and the band performing 10 Louis Prima Sr. classics with a razor-sharp rock-and-roll edge. “Blow” captures the energy and wild fun of a live show with 11 tracks including eight original songs written by Prima Jr. In its first week, “Blow,” which was recorded at Capitol Records, was the most-added album on American jazz radio and debuted in the CMJ Jazz Chart’s Top 25 and the iTunes’ Top 15 jazz. WALFREDO REYES JR. is the drummer for the classic rock band CHICAGO. He has performed with many jazz, Latin, World music, World fusion, Afro-Cuban, and rock bands as a touring, session recording, and full-time player. Reyes is known for his fusion of many of the world's percussion techniques, including the ability to play a drum set with his hands in addition to the traditional use of drumsticks, whereby it is said that he can "sound like a drummer and a percussionist at the same time" He is well known for having been a long-term member of Santana, and a member of Chicago as the percussionist from 2012 to 2018 and the drummer since 2018. Charlie Gracie is one of a diminishing number of rock & roll innovators. A native of South Philadelphia, he became the first successful recording star of the “Rock Era” to emerge from that neighborhood. In 1957, Charlie’s Butterfly topped the American and British music charts, selling over 3 million copies. His other late 50’s big sellers include: Fabulous, Ninety-Nine Ways, Wanderin Eyes, I Love You So Much It Hurts and Cool Baby. These hits bankrolled Philly’s famous Cameo-Parkway record label.
At the height of his fame, Charlie frequently appeared on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, The Ed Sullivan Show, and Alan Freed’s TV Specials. He headlined shows at the Brooklyn Paramount, the Casino Royale in Washington, the 500 Club in Atlantic City, the Opera House in Chicago and old Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia.
Charlie’s star burned even brighter in Great Britain where he became the first solo American artist to bring rock & roll to the English concert stage. Preceded only by Bill Haley and the Comets, Charlie headlined London’s Palladium and Hippodrome - receiving outstanding receptions from the press and public. Charlie’s popularity in the United Kingdom continues to this day where he continues to tour annually.
His superb guitar playing elicited the highest of praise from music legends like George Harrison. The late Beatle once referred to Charlie’s guitar technique as “brilliant” in a March 1996 interview with Billboard Magazine. Sir Paul McCartney paid tribute to Charlie by recording an updated version of Fabulous on his album Run Devil Run.
Pop superstar Sir Cliff Richard followed in 2014 and 2016 by paying tribute to Charlie with updated versions of Fabulous and Butterfly in his Fabulous Rock & Roll Songbook CD series.
Belfast Blues performer Van Morrison displayed his admiration for Charlie by inviting him to open a West Coast tour - one of a precious few artists to be given that honor!
In 2011, on his 75th birthday, Charlie recorded ‘Baby Doll’, a true resurrection for him as it received mass airplay on the BBC as well as Sirius XM in the USA, entering the Mediabase Top 100 and the #1 retail seller position for several weeks in Philadelphia. As the record peaked, he headlined the World Café and played at the Bitter End in NYC.
In 2012 Charlie was the subject of a made for PBS-TV documentary: Fabulous! The program recounted the story of his influential career - from humble beginnings in his South Philadelphia row home to concert stages around the world!
The year 2015 saw the release of his long-awaited autobiography: ‘ROCK & ROLL’s HIDDEN GIANT: THE STORY OF ROCK PIONEER CHARLIE GRACIE’ (Alfred Music Publishing). The book received critical acclaim, including a stellar endorsement by Sir Paul McCartney!
A member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame, Charlie shows no signs of slowing down. He still plays to packed houses all around the world. Recent show tours have taken him to France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Finland and Great Britain -the site of his greatest success.

Unfortunately Kevin D. Hoffman's early upbringing was interrupted by a cross burning right in his adoptive family's own front yard. Raised in God's country, rural Indiana, JAY JESSE JOHNSON, worked in his Dad's filling station and earned extra money bailing hay until one day the desire to chase a Rock & Roll dream came knocking on his mental door and off to New York he went with no band and no job. Toting a Fender Bassman amp and a Stratocaster guitar, it turned out to be Connecticut that made the dream come true when, as a member of local band CRYER Jay Jesse Johnson performed with some of the world's greatest and most well known musicians. Some might call it the "Who's Who" of Rock & Roll which led Portrait Recording Artists, ARC ANGEL, to hire him as their lead guitarist where the group had the hit record "Tragedy" as well as appearances as one of the very first bands to be shown on the early version of the newly created MTV. As a member of the band DEADRINGER, which featured members of the ALICE COOPER band and BLUE OYSTER CULT band, Jay Jesse Johnson developed a nearly lifelong friendship with ALICE COOPER drummer Neal Smith who is a Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame drummer.
