Talking at folks is one thing, having a heart to heart is another. When someone isn’t looking at us, while we are trying to convey something sincere, it hurts. That should make us aware to put our eyes on their eyes while preaching.

When should I use an illustration? When is it too much? What makes up a good illustration?
We don’t want to proof text the whole sermon, but we also don’t want to speculate. Balance is key.
Is my sermon a “song and dance” trick or gimmick? Am I pointing people to my cleverness and wit? Something to consider.
God is too big and often times we preach Him too small. People leave the faith because their God isn’t big enough. We may be the cause of that.
As you approach your sermon, what steps do you take? What do you do with peripheral verses? Are you pointing people to Jesus?

Doing the work of an evangelist isn’t just preaching on it, nor is it someone else’s job. It’s yours.
What do you make of Saturday nights? Are you busy? Are you watching ball? Or are you finalizing your heart for Sunday?
Honestly, what are you expecting when you preach? Public response? Public praise? Or nothing at all?
What are we eating from Scripture? Our own thoughts or the thoughts of the Spirit? Topical preaching alone, is shallow at best and it leaves our souls longing for more.
