We all get angry. How quickly do you get there and what do you do with it? Most of us speak too quickly, often before we think. What if you learned to be quiet a little more often. And nearly all of us do not listen enough. What if we truly did listen twice as much as we speak? Maybe, just maybe our walk with Jesus and our relationship with others would be more fruitful, more consistent, less troublesome. We all would do well to memorize in our minds, mouths and hearts James 1:19. Especially the lines, “be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry”. Imagine how differently good it would be.

If you laughed a bit at the title of this new series, you were not alone. And that’s because you and I (and every other non-delusional person) know that perfection on human terms is not going to happen. Still, the scriptures show that we are “being perfected”—being made complete—as we, through grace and the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, become more and more like Jesus. Part of that comes with age and wisdom and experience. Part of it comes because we want it to come. Most of it comes simply by the grace of God as He works His work in redeeming and re-creating us. James, the half-brother of Jesus Christ, is literally giving us a “how to” manual as it relates to living the Christian life. It’s practical. It’s daunting. It’s certainly convicting. As we take our first overhead look today, you, too, will come to understand when I say, “James would understand.”

It can be almost overwhelming sometimes when we sit back and watch the world spinning ever-so-quickly toward anarchy and chaos. We see it world-wide, but we can’t help but see it in our own nation, especially when we consider the corruption and/or ineptitude of leadership at the highest levels. Sometimes it feels like we don’t have a chance! But if you look back through history, even to the time when Jesus came to earth, it was really much the same. Evil rulers dominated the landscape and tried their best to exert their evil wills in all directions. One was a dynasty we know as “the Herods.” Bottom line, though, is that the Herods are all gone. And even though new evil leaders will and do follow in their footsteps, their day will end. They will die and face inescapable judgment. But Jesus conquered death, and He still lives! It’s good to remember history; it’s good to have open eyes and see what’s going on. But maybe it’s better to keep our eyes on God and remember that our God reigns! He is not a God of chaos. In fact, it is out of chaos that He creates order, exactly according to His purpose. You can trust Him!

The “GOING” part of the great commission is pretty clear. What’s harder to come by is the answer to two HUGE little questions the great commission begs be asked: “HOW?” and “WHO?”
In today’s message we consider those questions, and we take a look at the life of a man God called long ago, and then sent. Maybe what this man Isaiah learned in the process can teach us. And just maybe, how he answered the questions can inspire us to do the same.

The question was asked of Jesus, “and who is my neighbor”? In our series entitled GOING we are reminded the importance of our taking the message of Jesus to those who need to know Him. As you go and wherever you go, may you be a good and salty neighbor to those in your circles.

One of Jesus’ most overlooked commands is the last thing he ever said to his disciples. We are quick to obey some of his other commands, but often struggle to obey this most important one. Because of the resurrection, we have an inside track to the best news the world has ever known, yet we struggle to share it. This week, we are reminded that “Going” means obeying Jesus’ command to “make disciples” “as we are going.”

We continue the thread we started last Sunday when we asked the two biggest questions of life: 1) Can we trust God? 2) WILL we trust God? There is no more teaching of God more challenging—or more ignored likely—than His command to be generous in our giving back to Him. Whether you’re talking about tithing, as was commanded in the Old Testament, or the even more generous giving anticipated by the covenant of grace—it’s a tall order sometimes. But when we will actually DO IT, actually trust Him with all of our stuff, some amazing things will happen that can be experienced in no other way. Join us today as we step back into a story where a “widow bit” was more than enough!

Usually, when it comes to giving, we begin to think in terms of percentages. While that’s certainly a biblical model, it seems as though the New Testament asks more of us. Join us this week as we explore “how much” we are supposed to give, and celebrate the ways that WACC has done this already!

In Luke 2, we are given a brief, one-sentence look at what Jesus did as he grew. This week, we will look at those things and how they can work to help us grow in similar ways in today’s world.
We all know the frustration of failing at something repeatedly because our wishes to change and efforts to change are never quite enough. In this first message in our “Growing” focus, we will look quickly at three biblical scenes in which people by themselves were not enough until God made the difference. In all three cases, part of the work to be done toward growth involves getting outside of our mediocre, comfortable and often sick complacency, and then allowing God to transform us or our situations with His power.

Jake leads us through the overarching story of the Bible and how God, since the beginning of time, has contextualized himself, ultimately through Jesus. Throughout history, the methods of God and the Church have changed, but the message stays the same. God is the great I AM. He has never changed and never will, and we can be comforted by his presence in the days to come.

Only God can heal miraculously. He has performed all kinds of healings throughout the Bible and then some. Sometimes He did so on His own initiative. Sometimes He waited to do so on the request of people. In this week’s message we find that Naaman’s healing was dependent on his obedience, but his obedience was not dependent on his understanding. Just as God has shown He can heal bodies, His desire is to heal sinful, broken hearts. Only God can truly heal bodies. Only God can heal sin.

Many people are unaware of the fact that the idea of work and a “work ethic” are woven into the Bible from the earliest pages of scripture. Long before the fall, humans were given a job to do, tending the garden, tending paradise, so to speak. With the fall work became undoubtedly harder, but in no way a punishment in and of itself. From the biblical perspective, work is always a gift, always a blessing, always a responsibility. Today, this Labor Day weekend, we will be taking a look at this whole idea of “work.” So grab your boots… let’s get going!

In today’s final message of the Broken Saviors series, we walk through what might well be the most disturbing and ugly chapters in the entire Bible. There’s probably a good reason why almost nobody preaches about these chapters, and almost no one can spend much time reading them! But read them we must! And pay attention, we must—because they are true-to-life, unvarnished pictures of exactly what happens to a leaderless nation where the only moral code is “whatever seemed right in their own eyes.” This would all be less disturbing if it did not look so much like today’s world, today’s news, and in increasing ways—today’s America and even today’s church.
If nothing else, these bitter chapters remind us of the absolute depravity of the human condition, and our utter need for the only true savior who can change and redeem any of it. As we embrace our own dark, sinful natures, we are made more desperate to embrace His merciful salvation.

Everybody—absolutely everybody—has a god. From the most devout follower of the Lord, to the most determined atheist—everybody has a god. Trouble is, only One is real, true, powerful. The rest are mere counterfeits—broken, damaged, inadequate and ultimately incredibly disappointing. In our story today a man named Micah tries to create some gods made in his own image. It is a classic picture of ancient idolatry, and the gods he has made will soon abandon him. But Micah’s gods are no less tenuous than our own: pride, money, sex, power, possessions, pleasures, media, games, house, relationships-- even wrong theology and misguided worship--can find us bowing to gods who cannot save us and will leave us alone and desolately empty. This is a cautionary tale.

Time and time again Samson has shown his propensity for his physical strength and moral weakness. This part of Samson’s life will show that his strength will become his weakness. His pride will lead to his downfall, but his humility will lead to the downfall of the Philistines. When we let God work with and use our weaknesses He can make something beautiful of our brokenness.

When I was a kid the stories of Samson that I remembered always dealt with his strength. As I read the accounts of Samson as an adult, I see the parts that didn’t get brought up when I was a When I was a kid the stories of Samson that I remembered always dealt with his strength. As I read the accounts of Samson as an adult I see the parts that didn’t get brought up when I was a kid. These make me scratch my head quite a bit. Also, when I was younger life seemed more innocent. Now that I am older I see the harsher realities of life and the brokenness surrounding them. In Samson’s story I see that God uses even flawed people to accomplish His mission. These broken saviors point us to the unbroken savior who allowed Himself to be broken for us.

If you are paying attention during the middle of summer you will spot a few areas that celebrate Christmas in July. In this week’s message Samson’s beginnings point forward to another angelic visit - to another soon to be deliverer. Both of these deliverers were born with an already identified mission. They came into this world with work to accomplish. One was temporary for a certain place and time. The other was eternal for all who accept and follow.

As Gideon prepares for his showdown with the Midianites, God intervenes to show Gideon his limits, redirect his fears, and show him an unconventional battle plan. In this second week of Gideon’s story, we will walk together through these topics and see how Gideon’s preparations for battle can be applied to our lives here and now.

Do you ever feel like there is nothing one person can do to make a positive difference in the battle against evil in this world? Does it seem that every day brings chaos more than control, and storms increasingly threaten peace? Into just such a time came a woman named Deborah, who is remembered as a Judge of Israel. At just the right time, God raised her up to decisively change “the way things were.” In our lesson today we meet two “wonder women” and one courageous man, all of whom by God’s strength won a decisive battle against evil.
Main themes: God wins! Yielded lives make a difference. Boldness and courage instead of fear. Saying “yes” to God’s call and opportunity; people serve but God gets the glory; Evil will not win out in the end.

And so it begins . . . The Israelites found themselves in a sin cycle that continued to repeat for centuries. Each time the Lord raised up a deliverer after they cried out to Him. Judges 3 begins the cycle that would perpetuate itself. Their story is our story. Same old story - just different characters. The difference is that Jesus is the only one who can truly deliver us from sin and its eternal consequences.

In our second message introducing the Book of Judges, we will see just how fast the faith of a nation can go from a vibrant dependency to a forgotten fable. In only one generation, Israel manages to turn away from the God who led them across the wilderness and gave them a promised land, to become a nation “prostituting themselves” and sleeping with just about any god who came along. This sad story is a cautionary tale for every generation, as we learn about the cycle of rebellion, punishment and deliverance in this story. We also will learn more about God’s incredible mercy and grace, whose love shines through in spite of every human failing.

When it comes to choosing a God—who we will serve—humans have a pretty lousy track record. Instead of logically choosing the one true God who made us and loves us and saves us and provides for us and cares about every little detail in our lives, we choose one or more of any number of gods who can’t do any of those things. And we become their slaves as they increasingly own us. In today’s series opener we lay some groundwork for our study of the book of Judges. And in the very first chapter we begin to see the very early symptoms of a heart problem that will prove Israel’s ultimate undoing. And we learn about the dangers of half-hearted obedience.

One of the drawbacks of being a large church is that there tend to be more people needs than there are shepherds to help meet them. Enter Stephen Ministry, a program at WACC designed specifically to provide loving support, shepherding and a caring, listening ear when people need these things. Today in our message time we will consider the WHAT and the WHY of Stephen Ministry, as we also commission additional Stephen Ministers to join the ranks of our other Stephen Ministers at WACC.

What difference does the resurrection make in our lives? More specifically, how does the resurrection help us to cope with the dark times in our lives? What effect do the prayers of Jesus from the cross have on us when dealing with our own dark moments? It truly makes all the difference.

It’s easy to get confused about Easter. While Easter is joyful and fun, it’s not really about eggs and bunnies. It’s not about lilies. It’s not about Easter dresses and Easter hats. Easter is about resurrection. It’s about the power of the cross, the weakness of death, the end of any questions about who Jesus really was. In just a few weeks the close followers of Jesus went from a group of people who were devoted fans of Jesus to people who would die for Him. Why? It’s because they saw the empty tomb. They saw Jesus alive after they had seen Him dead. And it changed everything. It can change everything for us, too! The surest sign of the empty tomb is a heart that’s full of Jesus!

Many of the questions we might have surrounding the death of Jesus can be answered by spending time in two gardens. One is called Eden and the other Gethsemane. One explains man’s weakness and need for a savior; the other shows Jesus overcoming Evil at every step, even to the point of turning Himself over to be crucified, to fulfill the Father’s eternal plan for our salvation. One is about human pride and vulnerability, one is about incredible power cloaked in indescribable humility. Come to the gardens. We will learn some important things there about weeds and wonder.

In our last message we talked about the universally tough question “Why is Life So Hard Sometimes?” Today we step aside from the “why” and move toward the “how” in terms of what we can do when it seems the wheels are falling off our lives and we find ourselves dealing with a crash. While the pain is real and hard times can certainly make us self-focused, there is something we can do that will help us navigate and survive our broken-world experiences. And that something is to REMEMBER. In our final message in this series today we will talk about how remembering the right things will provide the perspective we need to survive the bumps.

We are busy people, often mostly concerned with the now or very near future. We run our lives according to appointments and deadlines and scheduled trips. And truthfully, most of us run as if the race will never end. But it will. The inescapable fact is that every single one of us will DIE. As we continue delving into the perspective of eternity and its consequences for us, today we look at a couple of sobering realities that deserve our attention way before we find ourselves at that place. You have two absolutely unavoidable ultimate appointments. Are you ready for them?

We continue our consideration of heaven today, in the vein of eternity, and how the choices we make definitely have eternal consequence. Beyond our decision to answer the call of Christ to salvation, there are lots of days and typically lots of years to make choices. We “define the borders” of our truly final disposition every single day as we choose how we’re going to live and Who we are going to follow and what we’re going to live for. And from scripture it would appear that much of our eternal destiny and reward is formed and determined by the way we respond to the eternity He has already placed in our hearts, when He made us. And He made us to live for something much better and greater than what we merely know now.

Throughout history, God hears and cares for the orphan, the widow, and the oppressed–those who are on the fringes of society. Darnel, the Director of the Family Service Center, shares his testimony and reminds us that we too are called to love and care for our neighbor.

The book of Esther is the only book in the Bible that doesn't mention God's name. So why is it in the Bible? How does God speak to Esther and what does this mean for us today? Hear 3 different perspectives on discerning God's will, and responding to His call.

It’s so easy for us to mistake motion for progress. Today we continue our look at Paul and his words in Philippians 3, where he describes for us how to balance our perspectives on past, present and future, and mostly how to make sure that we are “living with the end in mind.”

We start a new series for a new year today, which is actually the “second half” of the series we studied last fall. They go together. If “it’s not about me” then it is also “not about now.” For the next several weeks we will be considering what it means to live our lives with the end in mind; and the end, believers should know, will find us standing before God and giving account for how we spent our days, our money, our time in the years we were given. This means that our lives need to be focused, along with our priorities. We each have a limited supply of energy, resources, time—and if I live “with the end in mind” it means I want to make sure my life is not consumed by mere trivia. Today we begin our exploration of what it looks like to live a life that’s not about now, a NOT so trivial pursuit.

One of the greatest mysteries of Christmas is found in the very audacious idea that God, who is “LIGHT” according to scripture, would choose to come and live on earth, trading heaven and glory for pain, suffering, darkness, insecurity and death. Christmas begs to answer why the “Light of Creation” travelled so far. He travelled “light” coming with nothing; but when He did, LIGHT travelled, cloaked in a suitcase of skin, wrapped in the rags of a newborn baby. In our message time together on this fourth Sunday of Advent, we will explore two angles that may help answer why. One, Christmas makes God real to us. Two, Christmas makes God close to us.

If you’ve ever experienced the joy of having a baby come into your world, you also know what comes quickly after: chaos! Babies have a way of turning things completely upside-down, and when they come and stay, our lives are never the same. One of the most marvelous pieces of the deep theology we call the “incarnation” is that Jesus, God with skin on, came to us as a tiny, helpless baby. And, I feel pretty certain, that His coming brought joy to his earthly parents. But we know that it also brought chaos, both early on as they fled from Herod and later when literally every heart in creation would be forced to make a decision about His identity and His charge to “follow him.” Today we’ll consider the chaos that comes with ordinary babies, but mostly, as we ask some of the same questions we did with our own kids—we’ll find that with Him, the answers are a lot bigger.

THAT Jesus came is arguably the most important truth of all. But knowing WHY He came certainly comes in a close second. If we don’t know WHY He came, we will never know what we are supposed to be doing as His Church; and not knowing, we will tend to make church all about us instead of all about Him. The good new is that it is easy to know why He came. The answers to that question practically jump off of every page of the Gospels, if we are looking for them. So, let’s be looking. In today’s message we meet an old man named Simeon who had been waiting a long time to see this Child.

In the middle of all that’s going on around us, three things tend to be true: we don’t see much, things are rarely only as they seem, and you never know what God is up to. As we kick off our Advent/Christmas series today, we take a macroscopic look at the pages of history and note that most of the really significant stuff--is the stuff humans completely miss. It’s partly because we’re not that great at seeing things for what they are; it’s also because God tends to work quietly in the background. In the world where Jesus first came, all eyes were on Rome. Power and politics were the news of the day, oppression and injustice were the lament of the masses. But what happened mostly unseen on a sleepy night in Bethlehem was about to change EVERYTHING.

The world has never been more crowded, with now well over 7 billion people walking on the earth. The world has never been more connected, via the internet and social media. Ironically, the same people in this world have never been more lonely. Truth be known we are surrounded by lonely people, people crying out for attention, acceptance, love. We work with them, we pass them on the street, we live across the road from them. Sometimes we sit on the same pew with them. In today’s message we will consider three stories, and God’s command that we love and accept each other. Loneliness takes us to the most extreme levels of “it’s all about me.” Jesus, the only one who ever rightly could have declared “It’s all about me”—made it all about others, and showed us how.

Realizing that I OWN NOTHING goes a lot way toward fixing a bad case of selfishness. It’s not that I have nothing… I have a LOT! But it is only loaned to me by God, for a season, for my benefit and for my use. But it’s HIS, not MINE. He is the OWNER, I am only the manager. In today’s message we will consider a story Jesus told about 3 managers, and what went right and what went wrong. In our time together we will attempt to clarify what all of this means by exploring four questions for faithful managers: The question of ownership; the question of ability/accountability; the question of quantity; and the question of reward.

We began talking in our last message about “the Precious”—the things in our lives that we hold tightest and dearest, the things that can, if we are not careful, become idols to us through our utter devotion to them, as they begin to own us. We talked about the basis and definition of idolatry, and we did some work last time identifying these “Precious Rings” we hold so tightly. Today, as we continue our thoughts along these lines, we’ll be asking questions of true ownership and what it means that God owns everything. In the end, we are just renters here, but God has promised us a permanent inheritance and residence just down the road. For now, we bask in His goodness; then we will bask in His glory!

The oldest temptation is pretty much “one size fits all. “It is idolatry. You can trace just about every other temptation to that one. So, it’s a good idea from time to time to identify things in our lives that have the potential to become idols, things that could well become “too precious to us. “
Once we identify them, we can be reminded that everything belongs to God and that all good things are a gift from his hands, loaned to us for a season. And we can learn to hold things with very loose hands because it will hurt much less when God asks us to let them go. Just ask Abraham…
The amazing thing is that when we are willing to let go of these gifts, we will one day be able to receive everything back that we once thought was ours. It’s about trusting God with our stuff.

Today’s message finds us shifting a bit in our theme. We’ve been asking “Who will I trust with my life, my future?” As we continue to think about what it means that life is NOT ABOUT ME and NOT ABOUT NOW, the next question we will be asking for a few weeks is “Who will I trust with my stuff?”
In a culture where our stuff tends to define/motivate/possess us--how can we be reformed in such a way as to turn our attention away from ourselves to the very obvious needs of others? How can I learn to see beyond myself? If you really want the answer, keep listening!

When it comes to issues of faith, trust and obedience, the oldest question--and one we’ve been asking a lot lately--still applies: “Who are you going to trust?” In our teaching time today, we are back in the camp of Israel. It is some 43 years after the first time we joined them there, when they chose to trust themselves instead of God for their future. It was a choice that cost them greatly. Now in the first three chapters of Joshua a new generation finds themselves faced with the same question. They had all buried their parents because of their parent’s lack of faith. How will they choose this time?

A selfish mindset makes me think I can control the circumstances in my life and create safety and security. This is a myth. In our message today we visit a New Testament story where a man named Peter, not always known for his altruism, will make a bold decision of faith in Jesus and ultimately set the all-time world’s record for a human walking on water. He’ll also sink. But Peter will show us that if we ever want to walk on water, first, we have to be willing to get out of the boat!

At regular points in life we are faced with various crossroads, some simple, some consequential. But at every single one of them, our old friend self is present. At the crossroads we are really deciding if life is all about me and what I want or about God and His desire for my life. When we choose our path, we are declaring the object of our greatest trust. In the story today we meet a nation at a crossroads. And we will see what selfishness cost them.

The oldest temptation of all really had nothing to do with an apple. It had everything to do with an idol - the one I see in the mirror every morning. When Satan tempted Eve it was with a subtle idea: “you don’t really need God, you can be your own god.” Once Satan convinced her that life should be “all about her” – his job was done. We’ve all bitten that apple, all of us have chosen self as our favorite god. During our new series we’ll be searching for an antidote to that insidious deception. The cure is found in understanding It’s Not About Me – It’s Not About Now. At it’s heart, it’s all an issue of trust.

In today’s message we meet a man named Jonah, perhaps one of the Bible’s most universally known characters. His name is known not because of how well he answered God’s call, but precisely because of the opposite. Jonah is indeed a cautionary tale for us in the dangers of prejudice and disobedience. But it is undeniably true that God still works with stubborn sailors, and it is not out of the question for Him to even throw us overboard to help us get where we need to be. And if we’ll look closely, a man’s radical disobedience is not the only thing we will see in this fishy story. We’ll also catch a glimpse of God’s radical grace, evident in even our worst experiences.

Jesus did not tell us when He would return, just that He would. When He does it will be unexpected. Our job is to be alert, keep watch, and be ready. We are to be obedient and faithful in the meantime. I much prefer to hear those words, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you” rather than “Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire”.

There are times when what we say and what we do don’t match up. But there are some who make a habit of hypocrisy. Their inner and outer lives don’t resemble each other. They care about the outside way more than the inside. Jesus has a few things to say to them in Matthew 23.

Can’t we all just get along? Unfortunately, people in God’s kingdom act selfishly and arrogantly too often. Humility is the antidote to living in this kind of manner. It is the foundation for entering into God’s Kingdom and the key to combatting so much sibling rivalry within the King’s family. Humility seeks the interest of others and not so much our own. What a difference that would make at WACC if we all acted with this same humility that Jesus displayed.

Today we look over Paul’s shoulder as he closes out this inspired little masterpiece with some well-pointed thoughts about finishing well. Maybe you should take a few minutes right now to go back and read through this hope-filled jewel one more time!

The Bible doesn’t offer a lot of space or options when it comes to fighting spiritual warfare, and too often our human “do-it-yourself” strategies are lacking if not laughable. But in a very practical and memorable passage for today, Paul takes the time to clearly enumerate six or seven pieces of “personal military hardware” with which God has already equipped serious soldiers of Christ. In this message we will work through his list, consider the equipment and the purpose it serves while hopefully taking inventory of our own personal state of preparedness. This battle is not “Armageddon-sized.” But it is of great consequence and mostly fought in the mundane trenches of day-to-day living. And much of it has to be fought on our knees.

We have gotten so good at separating our work and our worship that what happens to us on Sundays may seem pretty far-removed from what happens to us on Mondays. But this was not God’s design. Work is intended to be a blessing, a means by which God allows us to provide for ourselves and our families and even His work. We often spend more hours and years working than in any other single pursuit. In today’s message, Paul will remind us of the biblical relationship between employees and bosses, and, most importantly, he will challenge us to work with the right motives, the right focus, and the right awareness of who the BOSS really is.

In today’s message we continue our look at “The Toughest Dance of All” as Paul turns his attention, and directions to men and how they are to act toward their wives. If you thought he was expecting a lot from the wives, well, just wait to see how high he sets the bar for men! We need to remember that humanly speaking this dance is pretty impossible, for both men and women. It is only possible by the enabling power of the Holy Spirit, which is fully at our disposal. Why would we ever try to dance this dance without it?

Dr. Bob Mink kicks off our new series with teaching on the Holy Spirit, participles, and God's will. It was a Sunday to remember!
Light is an interesting thing. On a dark night or in a shadowy alleyway, we can’t have enough of it. But when the alarm goes off and we are fighting the bed sheets, the last thing we want is for someone to turn on the bright light overhead. The symbolism of light and darkness is everywhere, the warfare well-documented. As believers, we are called to be soldiers of the light. In our message today, Paul finishes his thoughts about light, reminding us that even though we “once were darkness” now “we are light in the Lord”—indeed—"children of the Light.”

On the first Easter Sunday a group of women went to the tomb of Jesus to finish the job preparing His body for burial. What they found in there and also what the disciples found there—is the fulcrum of the entire Christian faith. What did they find? They found nothing. That’s because He was not there. That’s because He had risen, just as He said He would.
Today in our message, on this Easter Sunday, our thoughts turn to a situation where the reality of nothing is everything.

Our focus today is on that Sunday when Jesus entered Jerusalem as the triumphant Messiah. What a contrast from the events that would take place the following Friday! But that Sunday, He would ride into Jerusalem like a king, and for the ride He would need something He didn’t have—a donkey. In a similar way, there are things we have been given, things we “own”—that could be used in the service of our King Jesus. The big question is: When He asks us for what He needs from us—will we say “Yes!” It’s a big question. And the answer says everything

I was reminded that if we are going to say we follow Jesus, then what we say and how we act should represent that. We should be different. We are called to be light. What should we look like? What would we be doing or saying if we were to imitate God (Jesus)? As the light of the world we are to look different, act different, think different and talk different.

As Paul turns the page into chapter 5 of Ephesians, he challenges us with the very tall order of “Being imitators of God." What does this look like? And how is this even possible?
Holiness in scripture describes “God’s pure and powerful presence.” This means that the Church is also supposed to be pure, and having a powerful influence on the broken, corrupt society around us. We do this, Paul says, by watching our own behaviors morally and vocally. The world is always watching. We should live and even talk differently, as followers of Christ.

Through our identity in Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, we have been enabled to live lives with qualities that distinguish us from the pagan world. As we “take off“ our natural habits and “put on“ better ones that reflect Christ, the world takes notice and is impacted by our influence. The contrast will bring light into the darkness.
Sadly, even those who are in Christ still wear the chains and inhabit the prisons that go with our fallen natures when we lie or steal or rage or spew—even when we refuse to forgive or act unkindly. In our lesson today Paul is going to show us that we were made for something better. We were made to be free from such chains.
We often pick out our clothes based on what we are doing or who we are with. Daniel Tiger suggests we should choose what to wear based on what we are going to do, but what if we choose clothes based on what has been done for us? This is what Paul invites us to in Ephesians 4.17-24 – to put off the old self and put on the new. Just like Eustace Scrubb, we can be freed from our former self and walk in new life.

Jesus has given His Church everything we need to THRIVE and function at our best, to grow in strength and impact. In Today's lesson Paul will show us that we are well-equipped and built to withstand and keep standing, even when we are attacked by storms, lies, and the Devil's best tricks.

No story can top God’s coming down as Jesus, God “in the flesh.” But after Jesus left, He gave us something He considered even better than His physical presence: The Holy Spirit. After Jesus conquered sin and death, this victorious king returned to heaven. But the conquering king did not leave us empty-handed. He gave us “the spoils of His victory”—the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Out of our oneness, diversity occurs when each of us embrace our gift and do our part for the community of Christ.

When we come to chapter 4 in our study of Ephesians, Paul has finished describing the mountainous landscape of God’s grace, mercy, and goodness to us. He then turns his attention to helping us see the “so what” part of this letter. The opening verses of chapter 4 give us direction in four simple but extraordinarily important virtues that will keep us traveling on the road together, in the same direction. If there is anything our world, our families, our churches need today—it is understanding how and finding the willingness to walk together in unity. Ever-eager to help us catch a glimpse of God‘s intention for us, Paul tells us first how to walk worthily.

One of the hallmarks of Christians is supposed to be found in the way that we treat others, both those who are a part of our family as well as those who are complete strangers. Today, we take a closer look at one of the primary ministries of WACC, as we also consider what Jesus had to say about showing compassion on the Sabbath, and what God had to say about true devotion.

We live in a “can-do, try-harder, put-everything-you’ve-got-into-it” society. And we are highly influenced by it, so we spend a whole lot of our effort trying harder in the hopes of changing the way things are or changing ourselves. The problem is that trying harder rarely works.
What would happen if instead of carrying that whole load on our own shoulders, we trusted God and surrendered to the work of His grace in our lives? Isn’t it about time we learned to believe more in Him than in ourselves?
Because so much of life consists of doing a lot of the same things day after day, it is fairly easy to find that we have fallen into a deep rut; sometimes it is so deep we can’t even see over the edges of this early grave. If anything can be said about God, scripture would tell us that God loves new things. He especially loves leading us into greener pastures as His “new creations.” Maybe a brand new year is a wonderful time to consider doing something different for a change.
Christmas may “numb our pain” as we focus more (as we should) on the peace Christ brought and brings into our lives and world. But we are living in denial if we fail to acknowledge that evil is and will continue to be a powerful force until Satan is once and finally brought down. Our text shows us today that evil and evil ones like Herod may have their day, but they will not win the day. God is completely and fully in control, and one day, everything that is so broken and haywire down here will be set right and made new.
"When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." 1 Corinthians 13.11-13
Despite what the year 2022 turns out to be these three gifts will make your year better. One gift for God; one for yourself; and one for others.
If you ever wondered if God has a sense of humor, just look in the mirror :-)
All through the pages of scripture, if only you will look, you can't help but see God smiling, maybe even bending over in a belly laugh, as he works to accomplish His purpose in the strangest--and sometimes the most comical--of ways.
We see this nowhere better than when we are wondering why we would find God lying in a feed trough...
We can't know how much angels know but we can see that one of their best days ever was the day when they got to announce the arrival of the newborn king. Heaven exploded with joy and praise as God wrapped himself in human skin, a present of his presence for all mankind.
In this week's Advent focus, God's penchant for using unsung people from out-of-the-way places continues as He chooses outcast shepherds to be invited to the birthday celebration of the ages.
We live in a culture where bigger is always better and just about everything is measured in terms of size and perceived impact. That may be true in our culture, but it’s not how God works.
In our Advent journey today, we are reminded once again that God takes great delight in working mightily through little people and little places…
The Apostle John tells the Christmas story a little differently: “… The Word became flesh and lived among us for a while.” As Advent season begins, watch with us in wonder as we consider the impact of this one little Word, whose coming into our world 2000 years ago changed everything.
Never in history have a people been so abundantly blessed as we have; and it has never been so easy to take it for granted or even fail to see it entirely. As we move into a season called “Thanksgiving“ let us open our eyes and open our hearts and give thanks to God in and for all things. Even if life is really tough right now, there are lots of reasons to be thankful—if only we will look for them.
We often get confused about power. We think we know it and see it in technology and governments and political personalities. But the real power comes from a different source; it comes from the source of everything. GOD. In this amazing prayer covered by our text today, Paul is making sure that believers know and receive the enabling and empowering strength of God, and that we at least catch a glimpse of just how big God is. As a believer in Christ, that power is at our disposal. So why do we live like beggars?
As we move into chapter 3, Paul begins to pray but then segues into a detour in which he explains the mystery of God‘s plan to reunite the Jews and Gentiles, as well as the mystery of grace that allows him to be a part of it.
Today we have the privilege of hearing from CRF CEO, Milton Jones. He brings an update from CRF and explains what God's grace is doing for those around the world, and what his grace can do for you.
In our last look at Ephesians 2, we talked about how God, through Jesus Christ, took warring factions and brought them together through his peace. As we look further today, we will find out that not only have we outsiders been invited in, we are now fully a part of God’s family
One of the primary mistakes that Israel made was putting processes over people, thereby building walls instead of bridges. In Ephesians 2.11-18, Paul reminds us that all the walls have been torn down and a bridge has been built between God and humanity. As a result, Christ followers are called to be bridge builders as well.
“For we are God’s workmanship…” it says in Ephesians 2:10. Most of the time when we read that verse we focus on ourselves, feeling thankful, or even proud that God‘s fingerprints are all over our lives. And we should! But today, let’s turn our focus away from the creation—you and me—to the Creator. Because after all, that’s where the focus really belongs!
Sometimes looking back, it is probably a good thing we didn’t know how bad things really were in a particularly dicey situation. But in our Ephesians text today, Paul wants to make doubly sure we know exactly how bad our situation was before Christ came with a means to save and redeem us. Today we take a first look at the PROBLEM, the SOLUTION, and the RESULT. Beyond the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, this becomes the most amazing part of the Gospel and what it means for those in Christ.
The most powerful engine is useless without fuel. The best table saw in the shop is no good when it is unplugged. The brightest searchlight remains dark until you flip the switch. In a similar way, a Christian life disconnected from the power of God will have no impact, no change. In our text today, Paul reminds us of the incredible power that is ours through Jesus Christ.
Are you too busy doing, and not just being? So often we can find ourselves doing the work of the Lord, that we forget the Lord of the work. Join us as we figure out together that God doesn’t need us to do anything, he just wants to do it with you.
Sometimes it can be easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer size of a mountain, especially if you think you have to climb it! The first chapter of the book of Ephesians is kind of a “Mount Everest” in scope and bearing. Sometimes, all you can do is stand back and take it in and just be amazed! In our study time today, we’ll take a quick look at ten huge blessings that already belong to every believer in Christ. We won’t understand them all perfectly, and some of them only barely. But what we can do is praise God and give him thanks for these incredible gifts!
Sadly, most people, Believers included, approach work and career as if it is a curse, or at best a necessary evil. But that's not the way God sees our work! On this Labor Day weekend, we'll spend our time considering two main reasons Americans have put so much effort into work, and we'll end with some considerations geared at helping us make sure our work ethic is grounded in biblical and spiritual wisdom.
As we take our first steps into the text of Ephesians we quickly find out that God has been busy making plans for a very long time, and that those plans include us! Today we'll take a first peek into the truckload of blessings we've already been given, and we'll spend some time being wowed by the mind-boggling paradoxes of God's sovereignty and man's responsibility.
It's called amnesia - the loss of the memory of one's identity. It's a serious diagnosis with serious consequences. In the Apostle Paul's day, Paul was concerned that the Christians at Ephesus had forgotten who they were and what they had in Christ. Maybe that's true of the Church today. We kickoff a new Series today - "WE ARE..." - as we take our first look at this New Testament letter, God's word for them - and for us.
In our text today the people of Israel have just left Egypt, but their freedom quickly finds them up against impossibilities and certain destruction. In this very place they will learn that although people are only people, God is God – and He wants to fight or us.
As we come to the end of our series, we’ll take a last look at the two main points of our study: one, that forgiveness is a complicated and costly business, And, two, that there is nothing more powerful than the sovereign Grace and Providence of God. Then we’ll finish up with a touching, powerful, real-life ‘meant for good’ story.
The finish to our lives will say an awful lot about the years we’ve lived. In our message today, our focus is largely on two funerals—one for Jacob, the “father of the twelve tribes of Israel” and one for Joseph, the favorite son of that same father. As we look upon last scenes and last words, we will find out that our unconfessed sins will follow us and even dog our kids and grandkids and beyond--and that our “owned and confessed” sins will pave the path for forgiveness and a lighter, blessed future. We will also witness in our hero Joseph that a life lived in grace also tends to end in grace. Forgiveness is such a sweet song! The “notes” of our lives will reverberate long after we are gone. Let’s be sure we play the harmonious ones.
Joseph has proven to the readers, to his family, to Pharaoh, to the nation exactly what kind of man he is. He is capable. He is intelligent. He is wise. He is faithful. He is trustworthy. He is patient. He is selfless. No wonder the people were willing to sell themselves to him. Because when you trust your master, slavery doesn’t feel like slavery. We are all slaves to something. Fear, anxiety, greed, power. But, through Jesus, we have the opportunity to become slaves to righteousness. And, in Christ, slaves aren’t slaves, they are sons. Because when you trust your Master, slavery doesn’t feel like slavery, it feels like family.
Guest speaker Luke Greer serves on the executive team at Orchard Group, a non profit church planting organization. In John 8:12-18, Jesus declares He is the Light of the world. This proclamation sums up the good news about Jesus. He came not only to bring the light but to be the light; to show us a new way forward out of the darkness. Luke walks us through both the function of light and the consequence of darkness in this week's message.
Sometimes when you read a passage of the Bible, it leaves us with more questions than answers. When that happens, one of the best things to do is to act like a tourist in a foreign country. Put yourself in the original audiences’ shoes and ask, “What would this mean to me if I were them?” In this week’s passage, it doesn’t look like much is going on, other than just the advancement of the story, but when we put our Israelite sandals on, a portion of this passage should leap off the page to us. God tells Jacob that “from Egypt” he would prosper Israel. But, Egypt = slavery. So, what do we do with this? Well, we let it remind us that the safest place to be is always directly within God’s will, and that the call for God’s people has always been a call to suffer and die to self.
On this July 4th holiday we celebrate our nation’s independence and freedom, but more importantly, let’s explore the Bible’s teaching about our Freedom in Christ as His followers.
In today’s journey with Joseph, we come to a suspenseful climax. The brothers can no longer hide or run from the truth, and Joseph can no longer bear to forestall his reunion with them. They get a sweet taste of grace, a lesson in sovereignty. Joseph gets to hug his brothers 20 years after their crimes against him. And we get to catch a glimpse of the greater story God is writing all around us. All in all, it is a very sweet story; and every chapter is meant for good.
Amazing Grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me… You probably know the song, and you may well know the beauty of grace if you have been its beneficiary. In our story today from Genesis 34, the eleven sheepish brothers of Joseph return to Egypt, expecting to be in deep trouble because it appears they didn’t pay for their grain on the last trip. But what they get is love, acceptance, lavish treatment and a feast—all from this man they still do not know is the brother they mistreated so badly so long ago. Such is the sweetness of grace; it always trumps fear.
As a parent, letting your children go can be unbearable. In the story of Joseph, Jacob is faced with a choice to keep his children under his control, or to release them to God. Decisions like these can make us "sad to be a dad," and make us question why certain things happen to us. We can rest in the fact that God has everything under His control, and He will use those experiences for our good.
There are many ways to react when a dark part of your past shows up in your life. Lennie walks us through the Recognition, Remembrance, Reprimand, Reckoning, and Restoration of Joseph and his brothers. We continue to see God working through Joseph, this time in showing grace to his brothers.
Today we look at Genesis 41:41-57 and Joseph’s promotion from prison to second in command only to Pharaoh. His example encourages and challenges us in our jobs, roles, and positions to honor God and serve others.
During a season of life on the sideline, it is easy to feel forgotten and insignificant and unloved, but God promises in scripture that he will "confirm, strengthen, and establish you." (1 Peter 5:10) This week, Joseph's prayers are answered (after 2 years!) in a way he could never have imagined.
Joseph's ever-changing circumstances find him in prison, now seemingly forgotten and forsaken. All of us will do time there, wondering if God knows, sees, cares where we are. So what do you do in the pause between the prayer and the answer?
Temptation comes in many different forms, and as humans, every single one of us are subject to temptation. Today we will learn from Joseph how to remain strong in the face of great temptation; we will also learn that sometimes the price of integrity is quite high!
Today we begin our journey into the story of Joseph, one of the most dynamic characters in the early Old Testament. As we consider his family of origins-namely his father Jacob, and the extreme dysfunction of his family unit-perhaps it reminds us that all families are broken; Their story could make your family seem down right normal! The thing to remember is that even in the midst of the chaos, God is writing a story that through His grace will reflect His perfect purpose. One day, hopefully, we will be able to see that it was all meant for good.
There are a lot of high-stress, high-stakes times in life; in many of them, we will have to choose whether we are going to trust in ourselves to solve the problems and meet the needs--or trust in God. King Asa of the Old Testament knew about this kind of decision. Early in his reign he trusted God and God showed up. Every time! But late in his reign an enemy king began to threaten the people of Judah and the question arose again: “Will Asa trust himself, or will he bet the farm on God?” You’ll have to listen to the message to find the answer.
Have we forgotten who we are? We attend church on Sunday mornings to worship and listen to a sermon, but is that all it takes to be a Christian? What would life look like if church wasn't something we do, but something we are? Day by day, continuing the work Jesus began to do, you are the body of Christ!
Everybody has a story, and most of us think we know or can control the ending, or at least have very definite ideas about “how things are supposed to turn out.” In our Easter Sunday message, we meet two Christ-followers who are traveling the road to Emmaus that first Easter Sunday evening. They are bewildered and dejected by the intense plot twist that has taken their hopeful Messiah and had him nailed to a cross. On the road they meet a “stranger” who comes alongside them and gently challenges the story they expected. He helps them see their own story and Israel’s story—and indeed their Messiah’s story—in an entirely different light, all because of the cross.
Much has been made of the seven last “words” or sayings of Jesus Christ from the cross, both in music, art and literature. Last words are important, and they capture our imagination and attention with their weight. In this message Jim will be travelling to all four gospels and their resurrection accounts, trying to hear and see the meaning behind our Savior’s last words on the cross. They are words of grace, words of need and anguish, words of love, words of victory. Listen carefully!
God is always at work in the lives of those who have submitted to His rule and reign. In this conclusion to our “New YOU Revolution” series, instead of looking at other people changed by the power of God, we will spend our time looking deeply inside our own hearts. The work God wants to do in us is far more important than anything we might ever do for Him! But we stand in the way. Sometimes there are questions we need to ask that will set our hearts on the course to change. In this message, Jim will be walking through those questions with us.
There are many interesting characters in the Bible from whom readers can learn a great deal. In this study we look at the well known tax collector named Zacchaeus and how his encounter with Jesus transformed his life. How revolutionary was this encounter? How did Zacchaeus' view of Jesus change after the encounter?
God wants to change us for the better. He wants to heal us spiritually, so we can live the abundant lives Jesus promised. Too often, we resist healing and remain unchanged, untouched, untold as what could have been be a story of God’s work. Naaman of the Old Testament (2 Kings 5) was faced with a choice between being healed God’s way or staying sick like he was. He chose wisely. How about you? What choices are you facing?
Do you ever wonder if it is too late for you to change? Or someone very close to you? A Tale of Two Kings reminds us that with God nothing is impossible, it is never hopeless nor is it too late. God‘s grace is greater than our sin and is found in our repentance. The only time it’s too late is when we continually refuse what God offers.
Isaiah was minding his own business, enjoying life and security and abundance, probably an externally devout man who would have scored high in “religiosity.” Then one day something happens that is amazing… he goes to church and SEES GOD! And his life is never the same; a revolutionary calling changes everything! God works when he changes ANY life. The response required from us for any significant change/transformation to occur is a willingness to see God as He is, and a willingness to see ourselves and others as they are, then a willingness to submit to his transformative work through us IN SPITE of our lack of qualification or spiritual maturity.
Jesus Meets a woman at a well who is a deep well of needs. But we all are – our cravings tend to drive us and if we're not careful, destroy us. The revolution of a better way starts with knowing our thirsts and drinking from the only well with living water – Jesus Christ
Almost every human knows the feeling of wanting more. Satan takes advantage of our hungers and thirsts by offering counterfeits (which we often settle for). Jesus' revolutionary offer is the only way to find REAL life.
The Washington Street Family Service Center gives hand ups, not hand outs. Darnel shares the fruit of this ministry and Jim reminds us that it is not about the provision from these stories, but it is about the Name and the power of Jesus Christ.
