Global plastic production has more than doubled since 2000 to roughly 460 million tonnes per year, about half of it destined for single-use products (1). After accounting for reprocessing losses, only about 9% of plastic waste is ultimately recycled, whereas nearly half is landfilled, about a fifth is incinerated, and the rest is mismanaged or leaks into ecosystems (1, 2). As governments negotiate a legally binding global plastics treaty (3, 4), they should recognize that recycling alone cannot solve plastic pollution and prioritize reducing production and reusing materials.
On 8 June, Brazil temporarily suspended its Butantan-DV dengue vaccination rollout after reports of rare and unexpected adverse events during early implementation (1–3). This decision—an appropriate response to a safety signal—should not be interpreted as evidence that dengue vaccination has failed. Rather, it serves as a call to make dengue vaccine deployment more scientifically accountable. Every dengue vaccine rollout should be paired with active pharmacovigilance, transparent reporting, and postlicensure studies that can distinguish vaccine-related adverse events from severe dengue occurring after vaccination. The priority is not to retreat from dengue vaccination but to ensure that safety, effectiveness, and serotype-specific performance are monitored in real time.

For nearly three decades, the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change has convened global leaders, policy-makers, and scientists—at considerable cost, including a hefty environmental footprint—to confront one of humanity’s greatest existential threats: climate change. Milestones achieved at prior COPs such as the Kyoto Protocol, the Paris Agreement, and the Glasgow Climate Pact provided optimism and guidance, yet rhetoric has often eclipsed action. In February, China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment announced a plan to eliminate severe air pollution by the end of 2025. To achieve this ambitious goal, China will tighten emission standards and boost clean energy and electric transport, including shifting freight from roads to rail and waterways (1). These strategies will build on the progress China has already made, but additional action will be needed to meet the proposed clean-air goals.
In the past two decades, the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has prevented millions of deaths and new HIV infections through the provision and support of HIV testing, treatment, and prevention programs in more than 50 countries worldwide (1). Although HIV remains incurable, treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART) leads to sustained viral suppression, which halts both immune system destruction and HIV transmission (2–4). With ART delivery at its core, PEPFAR has been enormously successful in improving both individual and public health: At the end of 2024, more than 20 million people were receiving life-saving ART through PEPFAR, and between 2010 and 2023, new HIV infections were reduced by an estimated 52% in PEPFAR-supported countries (1). However, in January, the US government ordered a 90-day hold on the PEPFAR program, which was later extended to 20 May (5) and still has not been lifted. Although HIV treatment was quickly exempted from the hold (6), ART delivery has been destabilized and effectively halted in many settings (7). The US government must reinstate PEPFAR to ensure continued progress toward ending HIV as a public health threat.

China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of sand gravel and crushed rocks, with an annual consumption of 20 billion metric tons, accounting for nearly half of global consumption (1, 2). Sand mining activities alter riverbed and lakebed topography and disrupt aquatic habitats and river ecosystems (3). These environmental changes threaten the safety of downstream bridges, embankments, underwater structures, and flood prevention infrastructure (3). China’s Ministry of Water Resources has implemented regulations to curb sand mining, but companies continue to engage in mining activities, sometimes with the permission of local governments (4). China must take steps to streamline and enforce sand mining bans.
The final planned negotiation session of the Global Plastics Treaty will take place from 25 November to 1 December in Busan, Republic of Korea (1). Negotiators hope to provide the treaty’s future signatories with internationally, legally binding obligations that can effectively mitigate plastic pollution. Most discussions so far have focused on the largest category of plastics: packaging and single-use products (2). However, effective strategies must also address the second-largest global plastic category: building and construction materials, which accounted for 17% of plastic use in 2019 (3). Without intervention, demands for plastic building materials are projected to nearly double by 2050 to 150 million metric tonnes, a quantity that would surpass the 2019 level of plastic packaging production (4). The Global Plastics Treaty must include commitments to reduce plastics used in construction.

Since 2011, a private company has sued to terminate protections for the Cristalino II State Park in Brazil’s state of Mato Grosso. The company is suspected of being a shell to enable private entities to gain rights to government land (1). On 23 April, after repeated appeals and counter-repeals, the Mato Grosso Court of Justice sided with the company and annulled the 2001 decree that created the park (2), despite evidence that the park’s creation was legal (3). The contested park area, spanning 118,000 ha, is a top conservation priority (4), especially for Amazonian tree species (5) and vulnerable faunal communities, such as the Endangered spider monkey Ateles marginatus (6). Childhood malnutrition is a well-known problem in low- and middle-income countries, but children in countries such as Bangladesh also face increasing rates of obesity (1). Obesity in both public and private schools in Bangladesh ranges from 14 to 38% (2), and about 23.6% of adolescents are overweight (3). Because the food environment— i.e., the type and amount of food that is available and accessible—affects children’s dietary preferences and health outcomes, it is considered a primary cause of obesity (4, 5). Bangladesh must collect data about the food environment in and near schools and then use that information to address childhood obesity.
In the first 23 weeks of 2024, Brazil surpassed 6 million cases of dengue (1), a viral disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes (2). Dengue is a cyclical disease with seasonal variations, and outbreaks occur every year during the rainy periods (3, 4); however, the previous record infection rate was 1.7 million cases throughout all of 2015 (2). Despite ongoing mitigation efforts, Brazil faces challenges such as the resistance of the A. aegypti mosquito to insecticides (5), climate changes that favor the proliferation of the vector (3, 4), and a failure to eliminate breeding sites (6). Other countries in South America are facing similar infection rates and challenges (4, 7–9). This outbreak burdens Brazil’s public health system, and the resulting workplace absences have placed a substantial strain on the country’s industry and commerce (10, 11).

Despite their size, wetlands smaller than 8 ha perform valuable services, including biodiversity protection, floodwater storage, water quality maintenance, and climate regulation (1, 2). However, human activities and climate change have driven widespread loss and degradation of small wetlands, causing substantial declines in ecological functions (3). Although they may be more vulnerable and recover more slowly than large wetlands (4, 5), small wetlands have long been overlooked in conservation plans, perhaps as a result of inconsistent definitions and limited research attention (6). Recent policies have begun to prioritize small wetlands, but international cooperation will be required to implement the conservation efforts necessary to protect them.

Iran is experiencing unparalleled challenges related to water scarcity (1), including the desiccation of lakes and rivers, a decrease in groundwater levels, land subsidence, the degradation of waterquality, desertification, soil erosion, and dust storms (2). In response, the Iranian government has begun transferring lake water and desalinated seawater to regions plagued by desertification and scant rainfall to provide drinking water and meet agricultural and industrial water demands (3–6). Many water transfer projects are underway, and more are planned, but few have undergone a thorough evaluation of their environmental, economic, and social implications (4). Iran should consider the environmental effects of transferring water and focus on other solutions to water scarcity.

Pakistan and the global community must ensure the safety of vaccination workers.
Large-scale road construction in China’s mountainous regions has led to many exposed road slopes. Bare road slope patches, stripped of soil and vegetation, have resulted in severe landscape fragmentation and destructive effects on surrounding habitats (1, 2). They are also potentially dangerous to humans. In April, the slope of a section of the Yinkun Expressway roadbed collapsed, blocking the road with about 4000 m3 of debris (3). China needs long-term strategies to stabilize and restore road slopes.

Two decades ago, these species thrived in habitats across Pakistan, but now they are limited to isolated patches in their range (1), are classified as Near Threatened in Pakistan (2), and are listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) (3). Pakistan must take steps to protect otters.
Global biodiversity decline is a pressing environmental challenge in the 21st century (1), and both international platforms, such as the United Nations Conference of the Parties (2), and regional development plans [e.g., (3)] focus on biodiversity conservation. However, because of the public appeal of charismatic species, research resources are predominantly invested in birds and mammals (4) and often exclude noncharismatic species, such as fish, insects, and plants. Contrary to perceptions, the ecological and economic consequences of noncharismatic species are often substantial. During the 28th annual meeting of the Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) held in November and December 2023, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released a roadmap for transforming food systems. The plan aims to end world hunger without breaching the relatively safe 1.5°C global temperature rise threshold (1). The livestock industry is food systems’ biggest climate culprit, accounting for more than half of food systems emissions (2) and at least 16.5% of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (2, 3). FAO’s roadmap calls for intensification of livestock production—i.e., keeping more livestock in less space—to cut GHG emissions. Katavi National Park in western Tanzania is famed for its pristine remoteness and large mammal dry season aggregations (1, 2). Two unpaved roads of equivalent length run through the park, linking the regional capitals of Mpanda and Sumbawanga. One road cuts across the center of the park, crossing the Katuma River, a dry season hotspot for very large mammals, especially hippopotamus (3). The other runs farther west through miombo woodland with much lower animal densities. After a hiatus due to lack of funding, construction to pave the road that bisects the central area frequented by animals in the dry season has recently started, putting animal populations at risk. Yet Tanzania could still craft a win-win solution to this environment-development conflict if it reassesses its paving decision.

Brazil has committed to ambitious goals, including the reforestation of 12 million hectares (1). However, a recent proposal by Brazil’s Congress (2, 3) puts at risk the Atlantic Forest, one of the world’s most threatened biomes (4). The Provisional Measure (MP) 1150/2022 aims to change the Atlantic Forest Law (11.428/2006) and the Forest Code (12.651/2012) by loosening restrictions on removing native vegetation. After Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies and Senate approved the proposal in May, President Lula rejected it, but the Congress could overturn the presidential veto. National and international pressure are essential to persuade Brazil’s Congress to comply with the presidential veto and prevent further attacks to the Atlantic Forest.
After 4 years of regression in Brazil’s environmental policies, the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been trying to resume an environmental agenda (1). However, the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies—led by Arthur Lira, a supporter of former President Jair Bolsonaro (2)—has recently approved a provisional measure (MP) and a bill, MP1154/2023 and PL490, that would hinder Brazil’s ability to control deforestation and threats to Indigenous lands. If these bills are approved by the Senate and signed into law by the president, global trade partners should reconsider their import agreements with Brazil.

In their Perspective “Abandoning land transforms biodiversity” (12 May, p. 581), G. N. Daskalova and J. Kamp suggest that rural depopulation, environmental degradation, and other factors have led to vast areas of land globally that are available for restoration. We agree that careful planning and management are needed to conserve biodiversity on lands where human activities have ceased. However, by oversimplifying the socioeconomic processes that affect whether land is truly abandoned, the authors overestimate the potential of these lands for biodiversity conservation.
The views of Lenda et al. and Holl et al. about land abandonment, biodiversity, and people largely align with ours. To advance our understanding of the short- and long-term impacts of abandonment, biodiversity research and policy should explicitly define spatial, temporal, and taxonomic scales; distinguish between passive and active management of abandoned land; and acknowledge differences in landscape heterogeneity and socioeconomic context.

The Chinese government has constructed the world’s largest water conservancy initiative, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, to address drought and water scarcity in northern China (1, 2). The project encompasses an area with 438 million inhabitants and spans a total of 4350 km across its eastern, middle, and western routes. As of March, the cumulative water diversion volume of the eastern and middle routes has surpassed 61.2 billion cubic meters (3). Although the project has generated substantial economic benefits, it has also provided a path for biological invasions (4). The Chinese government must take urgent action to stop invasive species from infiltrating water diversion canals and mitigate the harm they cause if they are transported to northern regions.

The United Nations identifies the drivers of the planetary crisis as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution (1). Mitigation requires reliable science to inform decision-making. However, relevant research is often underutilized in policy planning and implementation because policy-making entities limit the ability of scientists to contribute to the process (2, 3).
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), in an effort to ensure equity and reduce bias, has proposed a plan to change how grant proposals are peer reviewed (1). However, the proposed changes do not address previous evidence about bias in the peer review process, and the agency has not specified how it plans to evaluate progress. NIH should ensure that the policies and practices that control the conduct and communication of grant reviews are informed by evidence and subject to accountability.

The US Census Bureau decided to adopt a differential privacy framework by adding noise to the 2020 Census data to improve the confidentiality of individual Census responses (1). To protect the collected data, random noise was added to the tabulated statistics, and the data and noise were stored together in a Noisy Measurement File (NMF). The NMF is critical for understanding biases in the Census data and for performing valid statistical inferences, as it potentially allows data users to adjust for the noise in their analyses. However, in 2021, the Census Bureau released only the final tabulated statistics that were produced after postprocessing the NMF (1). This postprocessing ensured the final published data met data consistency requirements (such as nonnegative population counts), but it may have also introduced systematic biases (2–7). The Census Bureau must provide data users access to the NMF in usable form to facilitate the wide array of use cases for Census data.
During the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in December 2022, nearly 200 countries, including Chile, agreed to halt biodiversity loss by 2030 and to take urgent actions to stop the extinction of endangered species. Despite this commitment, the Chilean government is pushing for the construction of a road that would cross the Alerce Costero National Park (1), an area of global importance for biodiversity conservation (2) and home to the endangered conifer Fitzroya cupressoides (3). Throughout the world, roads threaten biodiversity and ecosystem functions (4). Before pushing this project ahead, Chile should consider the likelihood that the road will undermine the country’s progress toward international environmental commitments.

On behalf of the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America, the Asian American Scholar Forum, the Chinese American Hematologist and Oncologist Network, and the Chinese Biological Investigators Society, we applaud the News Feature “Pall of suspicion” (J. Mervis, 24 March, p. 1180) and accompanying Editorial, “Eroding trust and collaboration” (H. H. Thorp, 24 March, p. 1171). These articles revealed secretive and widespread investigations of Chinese American scholars prompted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) under what Mervis described as “NIH’s China Initiative.” As Mervis explains, “81% of the scientists cited in the NIH letters identify as Asian,” and hundreds of Chinese American scholars’ lives and careers have been disrupted or ruined. The Department of Justice’s original “China Initiative,” launched in 2018 to protect national security, raised concerns that Asian Americans and immigrants were being profiled. Although there have since been positive changes to that program (1), both scientists and nonscientists in the United States must remain vigilant to ensure that history does not repeat itself.
In his News Feature “Pall of suspicion” (24 March, p. 1180), J. Mervis describes 5 of the 246 cases in which the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) suspected that scientists were violating grant funding policies. Mervis insinuates that the cases were mishandled and unjustified, but the data he cites show that NIH had well-founded concerns. In over 60% of the 246 cases, institutional investigations resulted in employment termination or future grant ineligibility, whereas institutions found no evidence of wrongdoing in only 6% of cases. Mervis characterizes the investigations as secretive, but the lack of transparency can be explained by privacy considerations, which prevented NIH from disclosing details about the evidence leading to concerns about these 246 scientists. Although nondisclosure of details to the public may have led to misunderstandings among those not directly involved, NIH followed appropriate procedures and guidelines to protect the integrity of its funding.

Addressing global warming requires increased investment in conserving and restoring carbon-dense natural habitats. Some companies that emit carbon have turned to certified carbon credits to offset their environmental impact. However, the effectiveness of carbon credits depends on the methods used to quantify them. If carbon credits do not accurately represent their environmental benefits, relying on them could exacerbate climate change (1). To ensure that carbon credits are robust, the methods used to calculate them must be improved.

Kaiser explains that recently issued recommendations (1) from the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) would require government oversight for all pathogen research. Although we strongly support the NSABB recommendations, we recognize that the disjointed federal oversight of biosafety and insufficient support could stymie their implementation. To operationalize effective biosecurity oversight systems, the US government must provide regulators and local institutional staff with the appropriate tools and resources.

As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we shouldn’t overlook the women who contribute so much to science and yet continue to be devalued, ignored, and discouraged from pursuing an academic career. Women researchers are cited less often than men (1) and are substantially less likely than men to be credited with authorship within research teams (2). A variety of factors contribute to gender disparity in science, including harassment (3), conscious and unconscious gender bias (4), and motherhood (5). One often-overlooked obstacle is the myth of meritocracy (6), a set of assumptions that obscures the challenges faced by women and other underrepresented groups.
In their Editorial “Students and postdocs deserve more” (10 February, p. 519), S. M. Malcom and S. Parikh describe elements of academia’s culture and governance that have stirred justified distress and protest among our trainees. I disagree, however, with their conclusion that funding agencies alone can address the problems. Funders indeed have important capacities, including increasing stipends and benefits for students and postdocs, but academic research institutions also hold both power and responsibility to effect change.

We agree with Calow that caution should be exercised when using storylistening in policy advisory systems. The same is true of all forms of evidence. Effective advisory systems that incorporate the natural, physical, and life sciences use mechanisms carefully calibrated to identify, synthesize, authenticate, challenge, and review such evidence. We advocate extending these mechanisms to the humanities and, in the case of storylistening, to the creation and use of narrative evidence.
In their Policy Forum, “‘Storylistening’ in the science policy ecosystem” (13 January, p. 134), C. Craig and S. Dillon explain how the expert evaluation of narratives can facilitate the delivery of humanistic and social science advice for public policy on a range of issues, including those to which scientific advice is also pertinent. Choices about which problems scientists prioritize and which solutions policymakers select are infused with public values (1). Capturing these values can be as challenging as doing the science itself, so any process that makes decision-making more systematic and transparent, as storylistening is supposed to do, is welcome. However, as Craig and Dillon acknowledge, stories often do not tell the truth. In addition, stories do not always reflect universal values. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using the storylistening approach in policy advisory systems.

Floating offshore wind, which can operate in deep ocean waters, is a potential source for increasing renewable energy production (1). By 2035, 11 to 25% of all new offshore wind projects worldwide will feature floating equipment (2). However, this energy strategy faces technical, economic, and ecological challenges (3). By the end of 2021, only 17 floating offshore wind projects existed globally, with a cumulative installed capacity of only 142.37 MW (4). Countries planning massive investment in floating offshore wind farms, such as China, must ensure that the infrastructure is efficient and environmentally responsible.
Toxic perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been widely used for decades in textiles, food wrappings, flame retardants, water proofing, offshore industry, and cosmetics and are now ubiquitous in the environment (1). PFAS compounds are extremely resistant to biodegradation and persist for millennia, which complicates their management and cleanup (2). Their toxic properties make them carcinogenic, endocrine disruptive, and immunotoxic (3). In February, in response to PFASs’ threat to ecosystems, biodiversity, food security, and drinking water (4, 5), five EU countries proposed a complete phaseout of PFASs (6). Other countries should ban PFAS use as well.

As researchers on molecular methods of wastewater analysis (1, 2), we agree with J. I. Levy et al. (“Wastewater surveillance for public health,” Perspectives, 6 January, p. 26) that community-level monitoring can be an efficient way of detecting new outbreaks of disease and activating or prioritizing local public health actions. This approach to monitoring also serves to assess the effectiveness of mitigation and includes communities with minimal individual testing. However, Levy et al. say little about the ethical or legal considerations that must be considered when expanding wastewater surveillance to new targets or communities. Although wastewater monitoring itself is not new, recent pandemic-stimulated growth in monitoring infrastructure and personnel, technological innovations, and proposals for wider application have made the need for ethical review and oversight urgent. Given that interest in and applications of wastewater surveillance continue to grow, the scientific community and government officials have an obligation to use the technology ethically and legally, ensuring that personal data remains private and vulnerable groups are protected (2, 3).

In the 9 December 2022 issue, the Research Article “Competition-level code generation with AlphaCode” (Y. Li et al., p. 1092) and the accompanying Perspective, “AlphaCode and ‘datadriven’ programming” (J. Z. Kolter, p. 1056) describe an artificial intelligence (AI)–based system for generating code. The authors explain that the system can be used for small coding problems, such as tests for computing students, and that they are far from being useful in computing applications that include millions of lines of code, such as word processing. As we enter an era of AI where tools like AlphaCode and chatGPT will change how tasks are performed, it is important to understand the boundaries of what they can and cannot do.

In her Science Insider piece “Indonesia bans five foreign scientists, shelves conservation data” (7 October, https://scim.ag/up), D. Rochmyaningsih describes how the Indonesian government is suppressing conservation scientists, research, and data in pursuit of economic development. Other governments have also restricted domestic and international research on politically sensitive topics, sometimes indirectly by controlling data (1), restricting funding (2), denying access to research sites (3) or specimens (4, 5), or labelling researchers as disruptive protesters, foreign spies, or provocateurs (6–8). To address global environmental challenges, researchers need freedom to collect, analyze, and share data without political constraints. International treaties and organizations could counteract some of these restrictions.
Over the past few decades, China’s coastal zone has been subject to extensive land reclamation. As of 2014, approximately 65% of all coastlines in China were affected by the expansion of farmlands, salt pans, aquaculture ponds, roads, and buildings (1), resulting in disrupted ecosystem services, ecological security, and sustainability (2–4). About a decade ago, the Chinese government began addressing the problem (2, 5). On 1 June, a new Wetland Protection Law came into effect, which is expected to build on past success (6). However, invasive species now threaten China’s coastal wetlands.

Any scientist working with animals is familiar with the “3Rs”—replacement, reduction, and refinement (1). Replacement refers to using alternative methods instead of live animals. Reduction requires using the minimum number of animals. Refinement demands the optimization of experimental techniques, housing, and care to safeguard animal welfare. The 3Rs led to a paradigm shift in guiding the use of animals in research, through legislation or institutional review committees worldwide. The model could be similarly effective if applied to farm animal production.
To promote a circular economy and mitigate pollution, the bioplastics industry has begun to phase out polymers derived from petrochemicals (1–3). This action is a positive step, but it doesn’t affect the many bioplastics on the market, which also contain potentially harmful additives. In June, the largest flooding disaster of this century hit Pakistan, flooding farmland and inducing a severe food crisis (1). Over 30 million people were affected, and more than 1000 people were killed (2). Developing countries such as Pakistan remain at high risk of disasters arising from climate change. To mitigate the damage, countries facing such threats should cooperate to improve disaster prediction capability and infrastructure.
Forests comprise less than 5% of Pakistan’s total area (1), and every year more forest area is destroyed by anthropogenic and natural activities. Pakistan’s dwindling forest cover has exacerbated the effects of climate change (2). In June, the country suffered devastating floods that threatened valuable ecosystem resources, including agricultural products, as well as the socioeconomic conditions of millions of people (3). Given the ability of vegetation, native biodiversity, and connected waterways and floodplains to serve as buffers for storms, rains, and floods (4, 5) and mitigate climate change (6), Pakistan and other Asian countries must increase their environmental budgets to prioritize ecosystem restoration.

In June, the European Commission proposed a nature restoration law to repair Europe’s damaged ecosystems (1). This regulation stands out by setting legally binding biodiversity targets for member states and has been well received by ecological scientists (2). However, the proposal faces an uphill battle to become European law. In January 2023, the rotating presidency of the European Union will be held by Sweden, whose parliament has already voted against the Commission proposal, arguing that its conservation measures were disproportionate (3). The newly appointed Swedish government terminated on its first day the 35-year-old standalone Ministry of Environment in charge of nature conservation (4). Given its political record of weakening biodiversity laws, Sweden is also likely to counter the proposed European law during its presidency.

Antibiotics are frequently used to treat or prevent bacterial infections in humans, animals, and crops. Later, the drugs end up in the environment, particularly the water supply, through wastewater, excrement, or groundwater. Because testing for antibiotics in drinking water (even bottled water) is rare, people consume them unknowingly (1). Extensive human exposure to low-dose antibiotics can lead to decreased response to antibiotics when they are needed (2), and antimicrobial resistance is growing (3). Therefore, governments worldwide should work to identify, prevent, and remediate antibiotic contamination of water sources (4).
The information and communications technology (ICT) industry, which includes telephone and computer networks and devices, has the potential to reduce emissions and increase efficiency in other industries by using internet platforms to connect equipment, production lines, factories, suppliers, products, and customers (1). The ICT industry is expected to help reduce global carbon emissions by 20% by 2030 (2). However, the industry’s own carbon emissions could undermine its positive contributions. Although carbon emissions produced by the ICT industry accounted for only about 1% of total global carbon emissions in 2007, without interventions, the number could reach 14% by 2040 (3). In China, where the ICT industry is growing rapidly (4), the government must ensure an environmentally responsible transition.

Extreme events are growing in frequency and intensity worldwide (1). In Brazil, national policy exacerbates natural disasters by failing to consider risk reduction. Real estate speculation and construction encourage urban development in risky locations, such as areas close to water bodies and high slopes (2, 3), and efforts to raise public awareness of the risks are rare. The next administration should take steps to improve the country’s disaster prevention and response.
Brazil exports more than 100 tons of gold annually, about 20% of which is produced illegally (1). Illegal gold mining in the Amazon region of Brazil has increased substantially in the past few years, as inspections and penalties for violators have diminished (2, 3). The gold mining process has led to mercury contamination in Brazil’s waterways (4, 5). When consumed by humans, mercury damages the central nervous system and disrupts the metabolic function of organs (6). Brazil’s government must step in to protect the country’s population by enforcing mining laws and limiting mercury use.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to have a devastating effect on the well-being of Ukrainians and their economy (1). The tragic human consequences will be compounded by the long-term ecological implications of the war, such as the contamination of soil and water by the weaponry and other pollutants, wildfires and disruptions to ecosystem structure and services, and the environmental impact of the eventual postwar rebuilding activities (2, 3). Ongoing hostilities in the vicinity of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station (the biggest in Europe) highlight the risks of large-scale nuclear disaster (4). To prepare for Ukraine’s recovery, we need to understand both the current and longterm environmental impacts of the war (2–5).

When Science launched its weekly podcast in 2007, Jeff composed the theme music, which still welcomes listeners to this day. Jeff was kind, talented, and thorough. He will be missed.

In their Policy Forum “Achieving STEM diversity: Fix the classrooms” (3 June, p. 1057), J. Wildfires have been increasing in frequency, severity, and intensity in many landscapes worldwide. The trends are driven by climate change (1), changes in land management (2) and land cover (3), logging (4), and ineffective fire mitigation actions (5). As a result, extensive parts of some landscapes are now extremely flammable and will remain so for decades to come (6). Improving fire management, especially early detection, will require new technologies and strategies (7, 8).
In China, decades of industrialization and growing cities have replaced coastal mudflats, sandy beaches, mangroves, and rocky reefs with engineered structures such as seawalls, break walls, and dikes (1–3). The loss of coastal wetlands exposes coastal cities and communities to substantial damages from storms (4) and extreme events, which are increasing in frequency, intensity, and scale (5). The degradation of coastal ecosystems also threatens migratory birds, which depend on the wetland habitats along their flyway (6). To conserve and restore natural coastlines, policies must prioritize quantitative local assessments of successes and failures and use that information to guide national and regional priorities.

The use of leaded ammunition has caused collapses of raptor populations worldwide due to secondary lead poisoning (1–3). In Europe, lead kills millions of wild birds each year, and the losses in biodiversity, environmental health, and socio-economic activities are estimated to be more than 1 billion EUR (4). There is no tolerable lead intake for humans (5). In June, Denmark took an important step to address the harm caused by lead: The country will ban the use of all kinds of leaded ammunition for hunting as of April 2024 (6).
Pollinators play an irreplaceable role in ensuring food security and maintaining ecosystem stability. Worldwide, 87.5% of angiosperms, more than 70% of crops, and more than 35% of food production depend on animal pollination, primarily by insects (1–3). However, pollinator populations and diversity are declining across the globe (4). The situation is particularly dire in China, where the distribution areas of the two most important indicator species, Apis cerana Fabricius and Bombus chinensis, are rapidly decreasing (5–8). If China does not take steps to address the threats to pollinators, their decline could lead to systemic ecological risks and food shortages.
