Voices from the Field: Rachel SimmondsRachel SimmondsStrategic Manager, Conwy Youth ServiceRachel Simmonds joined Conwy County Borough Council in 2007, following a range of previous roles within community settings. In 2007, Rachel joined Conwy as a Professional Youth Worker and since this time her roles within the organisation has developed continuously, and she is currently Strategic Manager of Conwy Youth Service and Outdoor Education.Rachel feels Youth Work is at the heart of the community, providing positive caring and welcoming spaces for young people to connect, share and learn. Rachel has always had a passion and interest in improving Young people’s mental health, including providing outdoor experiences and opportunities to push boundaries, overcome challenges and have fun. Rachel feels the above outlook has supported her within her personal and professional career, never being scared to try something new!Outside of work, Rachel is a keen walker and enjoys discovering new places. Rachel is married with two children and enjoys spending time with them exploring, learning and having fun. Matthew O’Brien Headteacher Birchgrove Primary SchoolMatthew O’Brien started teaching in 1999 and has gained a thorough knowledge of the Primary Curriculum and has experience teaching across the age ranges from Reception to Year 6 and in a Special Teaching Facility.During his career, he progressed from class teacher with curriculum responsibilities to two deputy headships, and in 2008 was seconded by the Local Authority as acting headteacher. In 2009, he was appointed headteacher of a Junior school and soon after successfully amalgamated the Infant and the Junior schools.He has been headteacher of Birchgrove Primary School since November 2013; a school that nurtures children’s natural curiosity, and develops happy, confident learners.Facilitating the Professional Learning of staff is central to Matthew’s philosophy. All staff at Birchgrove Primary School successfully understand the school’s vision and as a result, they work together as a community. Over time, the school has successfully brought about significant improvements and sustains these in a meaningful way. Much of this has been achieved by supporting the professional learning of the staff and strengthening collaboration with parents and the wider community. Owain Jones, Headteacher Aberaeron Comprehensive SchoolThis presentation is delivered through the medium of Welsh.Owain Jones has been the headteacher at Aberaeron Comprehensive School since 2015 and was previously the Deputy Headteacher at the school. Owain started his career at Ysgol Y Strade in Llanelli and was given the opportunity to develop various leadership skills whilst in this post. Jen DaviesYsgol Gynradd Gymraeg Calon Y CymoeddThis presentation is delivered through the medium of Welsh.Jen Davies is a primary phase teacher and middle leader in the Welsh medium sector of Bridgend. She has worked at her substantive post at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Calon y Cymoedd since 2008 under three headteachers and has supported the school as part of the senior leadership team since 2015. Following a yearlong secondment teaching at a Primary school in Melbourne, Australia, Jen, has worked as a seconded Deputy Headteacher at Tynyrheol Primary where she earned valuable experience in curriculum design and has developed a passion for learning about and sharing successful pedagogy and an understanding of the science of learning. Her curriculum design work at Tynyrheol has supported other schools in their mission to provide the best opportunities for their learners and support for their practitioners. Bryony Evett HackfortDirector of Learning, Teaching, Technology and Skills for Coleg Sir Gar and Coleg CeredigionBryony Evett Hackfort is the Director of Learning, Teaching, Technology and Skills for Coleg Sir Gar and Coleg Ceredigion in South West Wales. Bryony is extremely proud of the Further Education (FE) sector in Wales and feels passionately about the need to amplify its voice. Bryony started her FE journey in 2006 within the Performing Arts department and made the move into the leadership of teaching and learning in 2018. Since that time, Bryony has made the most of every opportunity to learn about the FE community and establish links, networks and projects driven to support the FE sector. Bryony aspires to be a future leader for FE and be part of helping to shape its direction.As a leader, Bryony wants to enable and support those around her to recognise their own strength, value, potential and voice within their organisation and externally. Bryony has demonstrated a commitment to this approach through the creation and implementation of the Action Research programme and the development of Coleg Sir Gar and Coleg Ceredigion’s ‘Culture of Curiosity’. Action Research and the wider FE speaks movement, is about showing staff that they are able to shape and influence not only their organisation but the sector as whole in order to give our learners the best possible experience and opportunity to reach their potential. Mae Bryony yn hynod falch o'r sector Addysg Bellach (AB) yng Nghymru ac yn teimlo'n angerddol am yr angen i chwyddo ei lais. Dechreuodd Bryony ei thaith AB yn 2006 o fewn yr adran Celfyddydau Perfformio a gwnaeth y symudiad i arweinyddiaeth addysgu a dysgu yn 2018. ALN Unlocked: Sam GarnerThe National Academy for Educational Leadership Wales webinar series ALN Unlocked is a professional learning programme exploring Additional Learning Needs in Wales and its educational context. Each webinar is guided by a notable guest speaker.This episode features Samantha Garner. Sam is a renowned Mental Health and Inclusion Consultant. She has been a SENCo and has a wealth of experience and qualifications around mental health and neurodiversity. Lauded for her humour and 'telling it like it is' approach for mental health. Geraldine FoleyHeadteacher, Marlborough Primary SchoolGeraldine Foley started her teaching career in Liverpool in 1992. She moved to Cardiff in 1999 and took up anew Deputy Headteacher post. Geraldine started her first headship in 2004 and her second headship at Marlborough Primary School in 2011. Marlborough is a vibrant, inclusive school in the heart of Penylan community. There are 530 pupils on roll, including Y Galon, our 30 place Specialist Resource provision for pupils with Severe and Complex needs. Geraldine is Chair of the NPQH Assessment Centre for the Central South Consortium (CSC) and is part of a pilot cohort of System Leaders with CSC.Geraldine is a flagbearer for well-being. Cath HicksHead of Learner Services and ResourcesCath Hicks joined Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales (then WEA South Wales) as a HR specialist in 2008, following previous HR roles in both the private and not for profit sectors. Since this time her role within the organisation has developed continuously, and she is currently Head of Learner Services and Resources. As a member of the organisation’s Senior Management team, Cath’s areas of responsibility include Learner Services, Marketing, Health Safety and Environment, Welsh and Bilingualism, and HR. Reporting to the Chief Executive, Cath provides strategic leadership, management, and development of the HR strategy and the learner services strategy in support of the Strategic Plan and financial objectives. Cath also leads the promotion and development of an active Welsh language offer in all the organisation’s activities at a strategic level, ensuring that the bilingual nature of the organisation is projected effectively throughout Wales.

This episode features Cerys Furlong. Cerys is Chief Executive of Chwarae Teg Wales’s leading economic development agency for women and charity that campaigns for gender equality. Prior to joining Chwarae Teg, Cerys was Director for Wales at Learning and Work Institute. Cerys is also a Governor of Fitzalan High School and Member of the Executive Board of BBC Wales. In 2018 Cerys was appointed to the Cardiff City Region Economic Development Board, which oversees the proposals submitted to the city region and advising the joint Cabinet. In addition, with her business partners Cerys has set up a number of successful businesses and runs a small group of pubs and restaurants in Cardiff.

Steve Munby is a self-employed consultant and speaker on leadership and on system reform, working with governments and with groups of schools around the world. He has spent his whole career in education, commencing as a secondary school teacher in Birmingham, England. He later became Director of Education for Knowsley Local Education Authority, Merseyside, UK.
Steve was Chief Executive of the National College for School Leadership in England for 8 years and then Chief Executive of Education Development Trust, an international education charity.
Steve has worked as a keynote speaker/consultant in North America, Africa, Australasia, Europe and Asia. Steve is also the facilitator for the ARC summits (education systems from around the world committed to equity, excellence, well-being and social justice). He is Visiting Professor at University College London Institute for Education and is Chair of the Teaching Awards Trust in the UK.

Laura is Professor of Public Policy and the Governance of Wales at Cardiff University's Wales Governance Centre. Her research centres on Welsh politics, devolution, electoral reform, and gender. Laura works extensively in external roles and is very committed to the impact of research and its benefits for citizens. Major Marcus Heslop is a regular serving officer in the Royal Tank Regiment. Born into a military family, his entire life has been shaped by public service and the Army values and Standards. A 31-year career thus far seen him deploy globally on operations. Progressing from a very young Trooper at the age of 16 to the rank of Major his career has given him unique experiences and the opportunity to lead soldiers in some of the most challenging environments. The strong identity and organisational culture of the British Army have allowed him to develop as a person, leader and manager. He is an experienced leader who is passionate about Leadership, coaching and mentoring those around him. Major Heslop has helped numerous organisations explore Leadership and uses his own experiences as a lens for promoting further learning and assisting teams in maximising their potential.
