In this Podcast I reflect on the situation in Gaza and the experiences of Jewish and Black People in the UK, the importance of speaking up and the reasons we fail to do so."The world will never forget the choices we make. The surviving children will not stop screaming silently, wondering why oh why we made the choices we did. What will we tell them?"

Each episode will feature Dr. Shungu H. M’gadzah, Psychologist and Antiracism Expert and Raphael D. Aboyeji, biologist.

The podcast is produced by Gari Gono, producer of No Brown in Town.

Podcast Episode 1: Understanding How Racism is like a Virus

This podcast explores the concept If Racism was a virus and is based on an article by Dr Shungu H. M’gadzah.

It reflects and links to the key principles of Dr Shungu’s book Understanding and Dealing with Everyday Racism- The Six Stages Framework.

In this episode Dr Shungu, Gari and Raphael consider the following:

  • Introducing the concept of the racism virus as outlined in Dr Shungu’s article
  • Explore what viruses are and how this links to The Six Stages Framework
  • The analogy has greater utility when we focus on human biases and discriminations
  • Understanding biases and prejudices and how racist views are spread.
  • Expand on the analogy of racism as a virus and how it can spread silently throughout communities
  • Epidemic vs pandemic vs endemic and the means of transmission of viruses
  • Asymptomatic racism, low key racist language and why we should worry about this.
  • What causes the racism baseline to vary? And what are the dangers if the baseline lowers? (Six Stages and biological baseline)
  • Consider what we learnt from the COVID 19 virus, diseases of the brain vs the mind
  • What antigens are and how these markers can fit into the analogy
  • The Six Stages Framework as a psychological tool for mapping the development of the racism virus and antigens- its signs and symptoms

What is the Six Stages Framework? How can it be used to explore biases and discriminations at an individual and organisational level?

In what ways do we discriminate? We all like to think we’re good people but the truth is we all have biases.

What are yours and how do they show up? What impact do our biases have on the people we work with and on our clients?

Come and explore your individual discrimination inclusion profile as well as that of your organisation.

This workshop/discussion will support individuals in using the Six Stages Framework as a tool for identifying individual and organisational profiles.

YES, I AM PRIVILEGED!

OWN IT AND BE PROUD OF IT!

HOW ARE YOU USING YOUR PRIVILEGE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

My gardener came round with his brother who seems to have a learning disability. He saw my car and said loudly “privileged, isn’t she?”His brother told him you can’t say that. But you know what he’s right, compared to many I am.

At first I felt uncomfortable and embarrassed and then I stopped and embraced it. We should be proud of our privilege, it means we are in a position make a difference to others. Use your privilege don’t hide it.

Listen to how are use my privilege to make a difference. Find out how the Six Stages Framework can help you embrace and use your privilege to make a difference.

The Six Stages Framework and The Prejudice Racism Equity Spectrum can be adapted to help us understand and deal with other areas of discriminations. It does so by providing us with the language and structure to talk about challenging issues.

How does the Six Stages Framework help us talk about violence within the community and to identify the signs and symptoms?

Reflections on the Six Stages Framework and how you can apply it to your family, community and your work.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF IT HAPPENED TO YOU?

Watch the youtube video or listen to my full length podcast:

The USA shootings- round and round we go:

The nightmare merry-go-round which no one seems willing or able to switch off, whilst parents scream get our children off and don’t put any more on. But like some terrifying déjà vu, it carries on turning and the eerie music is all too familiar to us all as we have heard it before.

In my view standing around and doing nothing and not speaking up is way up there on the spectrum of injustice or on the violence bystander spectrum.

So, do you believe in good and evil? The honest answer is I don’t know. I do however recognise the ‘human flaw of indifference’ and the damage this can do.

The Six Stages Framework offers a language to talk about violent acts and about the negative dimensions of the Six Stages where people spiral out of control into bad, and destructive behaviours culminating at stage -6 which some may refer to as extreme and violent behaviours. And some may even go as far as to call behaviours at stage -6 evil.

As more and more evidence comes to light about the tragic events in Uvalde it is even more clear that many questions remain and everyone is screaming “STOP”, “NO MORE INACTION” “STOP THIS NIGHTMARE MERRY-GO-ROUND” and “WE NEED TO DO BETTER”.

Our children and ALL Children deserve better, ALL Children’s lives matter All Children deserve to be protected and not left asking (as one survivor did, when she found out that the police had been outside for an hour before coming into the school) WHY DID THEY NOT COME IN TO SAVE US?

MESSAGE OF HOPE:

Having written and posted this blog, I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it.

So ask me again do I believe in good and evil?

If there is evil, I belief in the power of good to triumph over evil. And this begins by small every day acts that each of us can make, starting with casting away indifference and caring about our fellow human beings. We can show this by speaking out and pressing for change even if we are not immediately affected and we are not the ones suffering. By showing compassion for everyone even those that are different from us, those in our neighbourhoods and those who are in communities thousands of miles away.

Conversations that make a difference: Community Narratives

"I’m in a hotel sipping coffee and two white guys in their 60's walk in and start playing snooker and we start talking about racism and some of our experiences."

This podcast and You Tube video involves me telling Penny Holding about this conversation and others.

https://youtu.be/Xz_2aeOHNHY

Watch or listen to us as two psychologists reflecting on anti-racism and the work required in this area.

The conversation helps us reflect on individual experiences of being viewed as racist and how deep quality listening can provide the space for self-reflection allowing individuals to shift in their thinking.

In the short introduction clip Penny Holding and I reflect on the news of the need for antiracism work facing police forces and also on the recent experiences of black girls and adultification and strip searching.

Watch the full You Tube video where I talk to Penny Holding and we reflect on the work we need to do in this area.

https://youtu.be/Xz_2aeOHNHY

Watch us reflect and ponder on these issues and some of ideas for the way forward.

What happened in Buffalo? Check out the podcast to the latest blog from Inclusion Psychologists -The Six Stages Framework. In this blog, I explore what happens when we fail to challenge racism early on within the Six Stages Framework. The devastating consequences can be seen in the events such as the recent terrorism act and massacre in Buffalo, USA. We all need to play our part and not ignore or turn away from racist behaviours and language. Challenging racism is everyone's responsibility, including you too! We need to get better at understanding racism and identifying the signs and symptoms before people spiral out of control down the negative side of the Six Stages Framework. What action are you taking within your home, communities, and workplace to promote your understanding and ability to deal with racism? Short version of:

Leadership comes in all forms_ negative and positive. We don't always choose our leaders!

Dr Shungu and Sally Casterton talk about leaders on the positive and negative axis, that's Stage 6 of the Framework.

Grandma Cheri asks how can we get this work into schools?

Join us as we introduce Stage +6 and Stage -6 of the Six Stages Framework.

Stage + 6: Leadership qualities

Ability to take on a leadership role in promoting racial equity and social justice. Joining with others for the greater good and for the sake of Humanity.

Stage – 6: Extremists/leadership Strong racist views and work to champion them to others and recruit others to join them.

People on Stage 6 exhibit leadership qualities- this can be either positive or negative depending on whether they are on the positive or negative axis.

As Sally Casterton says "We do not always choose our leaders, especially as children."

This episode explores the positive impact of leaders at Stage +6 as well as the devastating impact of leaders on Stage -6 whether that be within the home, school, workplace or community.

WHAT STAGE ARE YOU ON?

Do you know someone who is at Stage 6 and if so is that +6 or -6? How do you know what behaviours do they exhibit, what do they say?

My latest blog has had over 261 views and many have described it as powerful and insightful. This is the podcast recording of the blog.

"Many of us have been watching the trial of Chauvin, accused of killing of George Floyd. This is tough viewing for many people, black and white (and other ethnic minorities groups)...

In Belgium there are similar concerns of violence and the death of black men at the hands of police.

We need all need to face up to the realities of racism. Black people need to protect themselves from the trauma of constantly witnessing racism.

A key global challenge is hate and bias and discrimination towards those who are different from us. We need to be brave enough to see the reality of racism and we need to be brave enough to call it out when we see it. It is not good enough for the UK Government and other organisations to deny the existence of racism. We need to wake up and face up to the realities of the challenges we are faced with globally, such as the reality of racism.

Hate and racism does not just affect black or Asian people. It affects us all. Without empathy and compassion we are nothing but animals."

“We choose our politicians based on their identities and then adjust our interpretations of their policies to fit.”

What are the implications of this on recruitment and selection processes and on allowing the space for marginalised groups to speak in meetings?

Creating a safe space for the voices of black and ethnic minorities to be heard.

When we allow ourselves to be stuck in caves of privilege, safe from the injustice which affects marginalised groups we convince ourselves that Diversity and Inclusion is not our business. However if we do this long enough the damaging impacts are clear to see as we nurture and reinforce messages of superiority and entitlement. We nurture and reinforce messages of intolerance and believe the conspiracy theories we are told. The impact of these repeated messages affects us all (not just those who believe them) as we saw in the Capitol Hill riots.

Some will argue this was in America, it cannot happen here. However the truth is it can happen anywhere. Wherever senses of privilege and entitlement are left unchecked and where there is intolerance of difference and an eagerness to blame those who are different such as ethnic minorities.

As we wrap up 2020, I sat down with Kevin Kamau to reflect on the year and discussed at length what that means for EDI resolutions in 2021. Feel free to share your 2021 EDI resolutions in the comment section.

Join me in this episode as I introduce my Six Stages Conceptual Framework and why it is an important tool in supporting individuals and organisations to better understand and to deal with racism. The Diversity Wheels are Turning and this is your chance to listen to some new ideas around fighting racism. 2021 is a New Year and we have to be bold and approach things differently. If we do the same as we have always done we will get the same results. We need to be committed to change and the Conversation starts here.
