In this humdinger of an episode, Tim & Mike discuss the advantages of harvesting a doe in the early season. In order to reach the maximum potential of your deer herd, does will need removed.
Food plots are expensive and does will wipe out your food sources and have a big impact before the mature bucks possibly ever arrive - keep in mind how important food is after the rut. We suggest leaving those resources for the remainder of the herd, which takes less stress off of the bucks and improves antler growth and development.

Crossbow hunting has been met with a great deal of opposition (especially from Mike), but numbers are real. Nearly 70% of archery kills are via crossbows.

Illinois legislature passed a bill to allow rifle hunting during the already established shotgun season beginning in 2023. The law states only a single shot rifle may be used, but there are some question marks concerning the language of the bill.

Episode 71:
Many don't know this, but there are free ranging Elk in West Texas. They were introduced into the McKittrick Canyon in 1928. Today, five herds of Rocky Mountain Elk exist in the Guadalupe, Glass, Wylie, Davis and Eagle Mountains of West Texas.
The State of Texas considers Elk to be an exotic animal. What does this mean? It means you can hunt Elk year-round with limited restrictions. A non-resident 5-day special hunting license for $48, or annual version for $132, is all you need! It is known as license number 157.
Finding public land can be a challenge, however. There isn't much remaining in Texas.

Hunting mature Whitetail Bucks is challenging especially when they know they are being hunted. It's even more challenging when you are hunting on smaller tracts of land.
Knowing where bedding, feeding areas, and water sources are will allow you to create tactics for a more successful hunting season. Know your wind directions, use scent control methods, and make sure your access to your stand is as undetected as possible.
Hunting small tracts can be extremely challenging, but embrace the challenge and reap the awards of the work you put in.

Billy had the opportunity to harvest a giant typical whitetail that gross scored 183" on October 20th in Southern Illinois. Just 5 days later, Billy struck again this time with a 157 7/8" whitetail.

It is officially turkey season here in the Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky region. As well as many other states. We are seeing several birds hit the ground. Always love a successful hunt.
Tim and Mike discuss the hunting gear necessary for turkey hunting and also get into some of the gear that we consider to be optional, but yet still valuable.
Our heart goes out to Travis "T-Bone" Turner with the Bone Collector. T-Bone was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer known as Fibrosarcoma. The tumor on his leg was too large and intertwined, which ultimately led to his leg being amputated.

We, as hunters, face much bigger challenges and problems in our industry than the use of trail cameras being considered "not fair chase."
If the technology being used aids in a good ethical clean hunt and recovery of the animal, then I fail to see the problem.

Episode 43:
Tim and Mike visited the Shawnee Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation banquet. There was a could have/should have moment on bidding for the South Africa Safari Hunt as it went very cheap.
The fellas get into a discussion about draw weight on a compound bow. Somewhere along the way, we have gotten into the "more is better" philosophy. There is a big difference between what you can shoot vs. what you can shoot effectively and efficiently.
Ultimately, it comes down to the proper setup and tuning and most importantly, the time practicing on the range.

Episode 42: THE BUCK FILES
Tim shares his story of the 154 1/8 inch net whitetail buck he killed in his early 20's. The buck was shot with a bow (a PSE at the time) on a 43 acre farm in Southern Illinois. The farm is surrounded by more than 23,000 acres of Shawnee Forest property.
The buck is a 14 point (6x8) with a kicker on the left side and a split brow tine on the right side.
This is our 1st Buck file episode and we found it fitting for the first couple episodes to be bucks harvested by the hosts. We have numerous episodes upcoming with guests sharing their buck file stories.

What Tim thought was only one 140's class Buck on his property turns out to be what is apparently twin 140's. Literally twins! They look identical.
The National Deer Association released their statistics for the 2021 hunting season. Hunters harvested more bucks in 2021 than over the last 21 years. 41% of those were mature Whitetail Bucks that were 3.5 years of age or older.

Utah bans the use of trail cameras during the hunting season. Quoting: "It's not a fair hunt any longer."
The Boone and Crockett Club has issued some controversial rule changes on what they now consider ethical hunting. B&C stated. "The use of smart scopes, GPS enabled tech and trail cams that transmit images in real time isn't fair chase. Trophy animals taken with any of these technologies are no longer eligible for the record book."

The orange Army invaded Illinois for their annual 3 day shotgun hunt. We talk about the Jim Thome Buck that was killed on his Central Illinois farm. The Redneck Blind is fully assembled and ready to hunt.

It's the first shotgun season in Illinois. So we are getting together on a Saturday night for drinks and recording a show. What we call the "All BS Edition."
THE Todd Gatzke joined us as our first official guest. Just good ole boys havin' a good ole time while the orange army invades Illinois.
Mike is back from his hunting trip up north. He had a successful hunt killing a very solid Buck. We are guessing it will score in the 150" - 160" range. This deer was never captured on the properties trail cameras.
Mike's 12 year old son tags his second deer of the season.
Tim had some fun hunts, but still nothing to show for it other than the stories that unfolded.
Tim closes out on his thoughts about Mediacom internet and Mike closes out on his disgust with crossbows.

It is the first day of fall as we record this episode. That means hunting season is inching closer.
Tim, a Hoyt shooter, really would like to get his hands on the new Hoyt Ventum.
We read the Field and Stream article about the alleged crossbow stalk, possible record deer, harvested in Kentucky. Derek Settle of Henderson County, Kentucky reported to Field and Stream that he had stalked a whitetail buck to 12 yards before making the kill with his crossbow. Not any whitetail buck, but a 57 point 280 inch buck. Derek checked the deer in with the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife telecheck system.
In fact, Derek killed the deer on a high fenced hunt at Patoka River Whitetails Preserve in Indiana. He even posed with a picture of the same deer at their preserve.
Derek, you are a douche! And the fact that you fabricated this whole story and dedicated it to your deceased father makes you even a bigger douche!
Only two weeks before the Illinois bow season begins. Final preparations are being made. Mike explores the idea of doing some teal hunting. Why not.... Tim sets his BBQ grill on fire trying to cooks some ribeye steaks. What a week!

CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease) and the fatal effect on deer, elk and moose. CWD has been detected in 25 states including Illinois. CWD was first observed in the wild in 1981.
CWD in its simplest terms means - a contagious disease that causes brain damage in the animal.
Tim shares his personal story of a CWD infected deer on his property.

Not too much going on with a bowhunting podcast in the middle of April. Mike brought his Zebco 33 over to Tim's pond and schooled his son on catching fish who was using his high dollar baitcaster.
For the record, Tim still believes in the baitcaster no matter the results on this given day.

It's crappie fishing season. A lot of rain has created high muddy waters, which has slowed down the bite.

The North Marcum Archery Complex is set to have their grand opening in April, 2021. This is a great addition to Southern Illinois. We got to fry up some of Mike's deer bacon and it was very good. The 2020 hunting season has came to a close. We discuss the hunting season in review. It was a weird warm hunting season, but what wasn't weird about 2020? I talk about my hunt with my daughter. It was one of my favorite all time hunts without putting a deer on the ground. The thrill of the hunt also requires a good ethical bow kill. It just simply wasn't there. We also review the Centerpoint Archery Heat 415 crossbow. We have several likes and dislikes, but overall would definitely trust it in a hunting situation. BACON...Is feral hog hunting coming to Illinois? The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will probably tell you no. There are feral hogs in Illinois. IDNR identified a hog population in the Lusk Creek Wilderness Area of the Shawnee National Forest this past spring and went in to eradicate them. Feral Swine does 1.5 billion dollars worth of damage annually across the country and it requires a 70% decrease in their population annually to control them. Did I mention BACON?...
