FINISHING WELL: Recent Episodes

Hal Habecker

The podcast will touch upon many subjects related to aging, senior life, church life, scripture and God’s plan for us. Most podcasts will involve discussion between Hal and Randy, sometimes including interviews with each other or with other guests. It is Hal and Randy’s fervent desire that by sharing and exploring God’s plan for older citizens in this podcast, seniors will gain a better understanding of ways they can finish well. It is also our hope that seniors will thereby find greater joy in their lives than they had ever imagined for their aging years. We will endeavor to help the listener understand the role he or she already has as a senior seeking to finish well. We will also strive to illustrate how the finishing well track can fill a void too many of us feel about our worth, our value and our purpose in our aging years. If we are able to clarify the message we know the Lord wants all of us to grasp, we hope the listener will find a renewed sense of purpose, meaning and joy in his or her life every day.

REPLAY OF THE FIRST FWM PODCAST

In this episode of the Finishing Well Podcast, Dr. Hal Habecker and Dr. Randy Hess revisit the very first episode of the show, originally recorded in December 2020. The episode opens with Dr. Habecker expressing his deep desire for older generations—parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents—to be active encouragers and mentors to younger generations. He emphasizes the importance of older adults pouring their wisdom, experiences, and love into their families and communities, highlighting the biblical value placed on elders.

The hosts discuss the mission of Finishing Well Ministries, which is to inspire and equip believers of all ages, especially those in their later years, to live purposefully and finish their lives well in service to God. Dr. Habecker shares his personal journey from pastoring at Dallas Bible Church to founding the ministry, motivated by a passion to counter cultural and even church-based tendencies to marginalize older adults. He points out that, contrary to societal views that equate retirement with the end of productivity, Scripture consistently affirms the ongoing value and purpose of older people.

Throughout the conversation, Dr. Habecker and Dr. Hess reflect on biblical examples of impactful aging, such as Moses, Joshua, and the apostle John, who accomplished significant work in their later years. They reference key scriptures like Ephesians 2:10 and Psalm 90:12, underscoring that God’s purpose for each person does not diminish with age. Instead, the wisdom and experiences accumulated over a lifetime are meant to be shared, especially with younger generations, to build up the church and community.

Dr. Hess shares his initial intrigue and eventual conviction about the ministry’s vision, noting that many seniors wrestle with questions of purpose after retirement. He observes that while society often promotes leisure and self-indulgence as the goals of aging, true fulfillment comes from discovering and living out God’s ongoing calling. The hosts encourage listeners to reflect on their own lives and consider how they can continue to serve, mentor, and make a difference, regardless of age.

The episode concludes with a call to action for older adults to embrace their God-given roles as encouragers and mentors, and for all listeners to pursue a life of purpose and impact. The hosts invite feedback and continued engagement with the podcast, reinforcing the message that the later years can be the most fruitful and meaningful season of life when lived in alignment with God’s purposes.

The Podcast for today is one Vicki and I recorded August 14, 2023. The topic is our “Identity.” It is our most listened to podcast of the 178 we’re recorded. I think it is still one of the most critical issues of life and of our advancing years. Who are we? What does our identity of being “in Christ” mean in terms growing older? What is life “in Christ” all about? Here it is again, just as we recorded it then. I hope you’ll enjoy it again.

Pressing on for all that God has for us “in Christ.”

Hal

We exist to call a generation of retiring boomers and aging believers to leverage their lives for the fame of Jesus and the glory of God.

Hal’s wife, Vicki, shares her heart about the importance of “Identity” in all of life, and particularly, in the aging years. Perhaps nothing is as important in life than knowing who God created us to be and to see ourselves as He sees us through the life and death of His Son, Jesus. Satan attempts to pull us away from that incredible truth by tempting us to see our value through what we do. Vicki speaks out of her own heart to women, but the truth of her heart speaks to men as well. Let’s press deeper into our identity in Christ and stay focused on His purposes as we grow older.

FOUR PRINCIPLES TO IMPROVE A MARRIAGE

In this episode of the Finishing Well Podcast, Hal Habecker and Ken Wilgus discuss the concept of "ringleaders," a framework for Christian men to reflect on and improve their marriages. Ken introduces the four principles:

I belong to Jesus the Creator of my marriage.

Jesus has joined me to my wife as one flesh.

To love my wife is to love myself - to serve my wife is to serve myself.

I am to my wife as Jesus is to me.

They emphasize the importance of grounding marriage in Jesus and understanding the deep unity and oneness within a marriage. The conversation highlights the need for men to love and serve their wives as Jesus loves them, reflecting on the theological and practical implications of these principles.

Hezekiah's story started well, very well. He became king at age 25 and "did right in the sight of the Lord" (2 Kings 18.1-3). He removed false idols, trusted in the LORD, and clung to Him faithfully.

When Hezekiah was afflicted with a terminal illness, the prophet Isaiah told him: "Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live" (2 Kings 20.1). Hezekiah prayed desperately, and God responded by giving him 15 more years of life.

When envoys from Babylon came to visit him after his recovery, Hezekiah showed off all his treasures rather than testifying to God's faithfulness. Isaiah prophesied that all these treasures would one day be carried off to Babylon.

Hezekiah gave no return for the benefit he received, because his heart was proud; therefore wrath came on him and Judah and Jerusalem. (2 Chronicles 32.25)

What would we do with 15 years if God added them to our lives? Would we live them for ourselves or would we live those extra years for God? Hezekiah's son Manasseh was born during these extra 15 years, yet grew up to be one of Judah's most wicked kings. This suggests that Hezekiah failed to invest spiritually in his son during his extended years.

Moses 120 years of Purpose

Hal Habecker continues his series on How Characters from the Bible Finished their Lives

We meet Moses in Exodus 2, where God protected him from Pharaoh's death threats and sovereignly led him to grow up in Pharaoh's house during his first 40 years.

At age 80, Moses was entrusted with leading Israel out of Egypt. Despite his failures, including striking the rock at Meribah (Numbers 20), Moses pressed on to fulfill his purpose. One of his final tasks was completing Joshua's training and commissioning him to lead Israel into the promised land.

Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance." (Deuteronomy 31.7)

God completed Moses' life with a personal burial. What a picture of beauty. God was pleased with His servant's life of 120 years.

Peter & John: Faithful to the End

Jesus called Peter and John away from their work as fishermen to follow Him and become "fishers of men" (Matthew 4.18-22). Though we don't know their exact ages when called, Christ's call on their lives was a lifelong commitment.

Peter's Journey

From his brash early days to his denial of Christ, Peter was transformed by the resurrection and Pentecost into a bold leader of the early church. Even when he faltered years later in Antioch (Galatians 2.11-14), he accepted correction and continued serving faithfully.

In his second letter, written shortly before his death, Peter exhorts believers: "Be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 3.17-18)

John;s Legacy

John, once known as a "Son of Thunder," became known as the apostle of love. In his final 15-20 years (AD 80-98), he wrote five New Testament books:

The Gospel According to John (AD 80) First, Second and Third John (AD 90-95) The Book of Revelation (AD 94-98)

His most productive literary ministry came in his elderly years, showing how God can use us powerfully in every season of life.

God's call on our lives, whenever we first said "Yes" to following Him, is to be faithful till the end. The idea of "Retirement" is not an option for us as Christians. We live in obedience to His claim on our lives every day that He entrusts to us.

Daniel: Faithful through the Decades

We meet Daniel in captivity when he was perhaps about 16 years old (Daniel 1.1-7). From the beginning, "Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's choice food" (Daniel 1.8).

Daniel served under Babylonian and Persian rulers for at least 65 years. In his 80s, he was still going strong, battling in prayer against spiritual forces (Daniel 10). The angel Michael gave him these final words: "But as for you, go your way to the end; then you will enter into rest and rise again for your allotted portion at the end of the age" (Daniel 12.13).

Daniel was fearless, confident, dependent on God, and served faithfully under pagan rulers. God is looking for and calling "Daniels" 3 men and women of all ages - who will serve God through all their years.

Dawn Pownell discusses her transition from a 30-year teaching career to retirement, emphasizing her identity as a child of Christ rather than her role as a teacher. Despite initial reluctance, she felt a divine appointment to return to teaching after staying home with her children. Over five years, she wrestled with the decision, ultimately finding peace in retiring. A pivotal moment came during a Bible study on John, which reinforced her faith to believe without seeing. Dawn now focuses on trusting God's leadership, embracing new opportunities, and redefining her identity beyond her professional role.

Jehoiada & Jehoshabeath: Faithful to the End

The story of Jehoiada ("Joe") and Jehoshabeath ("Beth") demonstrates how elderly believers can have tremendous impact even in their final decades.

Age 83

When evil Queen Athaliah destroyed the royal offspring to take the throne, "Joe" (about 83 years old) and "Beth" (around 80) rescued little Joash and hid him in the house of God.

Age 90

After protecting Joash for 7 years, "Joe" orchestrated his coronation as king at age 7, confronted the wicked queen Athaliah, and helped restore proper worship.

Age 90-130

For the next 40 years, "Joe" served as a mentor and spiritual guide to King Joash, helping him reign righteously.

Age 130

"Joe" died at the remarkable age of 130, having served God faithfully for 47 years from age 83-130.

Tragically, after Jehoiada's death, Joash turned away from God and even had Jehoiada's son Zechariah executed when he prophesied against the king's unfaithfulness. This reminds us that while we can have tremendous influence, each person must ultimately make their own choices before God.

Our story regarding Eli begins not with Eli but with God's judge who will succeed him. God's successor to Eli will be the great prophet/judge Samuel so we begin with his birth and background.

Samuel's Birth

Samuel was born out of a godly family (1 Samuel 1.1-2.11). Hannah prayed for a son and promised to dedicate him to the Lord. Eli blessed her prayer, and when Samuel was weaned, Hannah brought him to serve in the temple under Eli.

Eli's Failure

By contrast, Eli's sons were wicked men (1 Samuel 2.12-17). They abused their priestly position and "despised the offering of the Lord." Though Eli knew of their sins, he did not restrain them.

Why do you kick at My sacrifice and at My offering which I have commanded in My dwelling, and honor your sons above Me? (1 Samuel 2.29).

God revealed to Samuel the judgment that He would carry out on Eli because he did not rebuke his sons (1 Samuel 3.10-14). When the Philistines defeated Israel and captured the ark of God, both of Eli's sons were killed. Upon hearing the news, Eli fell backward from his seat, broke his neck, and died at age 98.

The tragedy extended to the next generation 3 Eli's daughter-in-law died in childbirth, naming her son Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel."

David was a man after God's own heart, and we all identify with him because of the way he lived his life. He was out there, you know, leading people making mistakes. I just just loving God passionately with his heart dancing before God. I mean, he was enjoying life with God. But there are a lot of lessons to learn from his life. I have the text there, and you can follow them all in your handout as well, but follow these texts, and let's learn from his his life in the next few minutes. In Second Samuel chapter 23 he lists out more than 30 friends who have shaped his life. I mean, that's a good discipline. We meet Joshua first when he was selected as one of the 12 tribes to spy out the new land from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun (Numbers 13.8).

Early Faith

Joshua (along with Caleb) spoke with confidence about how God would take them into the promised land and defeat the enemies. He had great confidence in God who would be with them.

If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and he will give it to us, a land that is flowing with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against Yahweh, and you will not fear the people of the land, because they will be our food. Their protection has been turned from them; Yahweh is with us. You should not fear them. (Numbers 14.8-9)

Leadership in Later Years

At 80 years of age, Joshua was entrusted with the task of leading Israel after Moses' death. God commanded him:

Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go. (Joshua 1.6-7)

Throughout the conquest and throughout his life, Joshua remained full of faith and trust in the Lord. As he came to the end of his life, he challenged the children of Israel with these famous words:

If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24.15)

Don't get sidetracked as we finish, Gideon is faithful, but watch his story. It's fascinating to me. You know, we begin to see Gideon in Judges six, the angel visits him and gives him a sign where Gideon puts a sacrifice in the rock and the angel brings fire down and takes it all to heaven and gets his attention. He's not expecting God to work this way, but God chooses him for a particular reason, and I want to say he chooses you and me for reasons as well, particularly as we age, for his purposes in life.

Israel loved Joseph more than all of his sons because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a very colored tunic. His brothers saw that his father loved him more than all of his other brothers, so they hated him and could not speak to him on faith. Friendly terms. How would you like that growing up in that kind of home where your older brothers hated you? On top of that, Joseph even had dreams of God's future for him, which offended His brothers. And listen to this, then Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more.

Listen and learn how Joseph finished.

As I think about the life of Naomi and how she lived her later years, I cannot help but think of a principle that we learn in the Advent story 3 you cannot tell the end from the beginning. Apart from the Old Testament promises of the Messiah ad the angelic announcements of Messiah's birth, the majestic destiny of Jesus might never be guessed from His humble beginnings and surroundings.

As we read the opening lines of Naomi's story one might never guess how the story will end. How anyone lives out the final years of life, like Naomi, is learned as we intentionally trust our lives to a sovereign God and live obediently following His hand.

Naomi's story begins with incredible hardship.

Now it came about in the days when the judges governed, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the land of Moab with his wife and his two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife, Naomi; and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Judah. Now they entered the land of Moab and remained there. Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left with her two sons. They took for themselves Moabite women as wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. And they lived there about ten years. Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died, and the woman was bereft of her two children and her husband (Ruth 1.1-5).

Simeon and Anna, two biblical figures who exemplify living well in old age. Simeon, described as righteous and devout, was anticipating the Messiah and was assured by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he saw the Lord's Christ. Upon meeting Jesus, he blessed God and was ready to die in peace. Anna, a widow for 84 years, dedicated her life to fasting, praying, and serving in the temple, and recognized Jesus as the Messiah. Both Simeon and Anna lived their lives in anticipation of Jesus' mission and message, offering lessons in faithfulness and devotion to the end.

Hal Habecker discusses the biblical perspective on retirement, focusing on the Levites who retired at age 50 to serve in 48 cities across Israel. Despite the modern concept of retirement being less than a century old, Habecker emphasizes that the Bible addresses it implicitly. He highlights the Levites' post-retirement roles as pastors, judges, and teachers, stressing their continued contribution to the community. Habecker argues that older people, like the Levites, should remain active in their faith, mentoring younger generations and fulfilling God's purpose. He encourages continuous growth and service in all stages of life, advocating for a multi-generational approach to ministry.

This study explores the lives of several key biblical characters to examine how they finished their earthly journeys—whether in strength, struggle, or redemption.

Hal Habecker introduces a series on aging and fulfilling God's purpose, emphasizing that aging is a meaningful part of God's plan. Hal argues that older people are a valuable resource often ignored by culture citing 2 Timothy 4:6-8 and Psalm 90:12 to underscore the need for wisdom and purpose in aging. Hal encourages continuous service to God, regardless of age, and stresses that retirement does not diminish one's mission. He concludes by urging everyone to live out their calling as effective disciples for Christ.

For our study, we’ll be looking at many characters from the Old Testament and some from the New Testament. The apostle Paul writes this when we think about learning from the Old Testament.

Randy Marshall and Hal Habecker discuss the importance of friendship, particularly in the aging years. They emphasize humility, adversity, and empathy as key traits of true friendship. Randy shares an analogy about finding one's life's purpose through the support of five close friends and the realization that life is brief, with an average of 30,000 days. They highlight the role of encouragement and the need for older people to stay active and engaged. Randy's ministry at Watermark Church, focused on intergenerational mentoring, has seen 20 people sign up to mentor younger generations. They also touch on the spiritual aspects of friendship, including honesty, accountability, and forgiveness.

As we age, living with and influencing our adult children is a huge theme in life. In this podcast, listen to Hal as he interviews well-known psychologist, Dr. Ken Wilgus about life with adult children. Ken has written an exceptional book entitled, Feeding the Mouth That Bites You, and while Ken’s book focuses on the adolescent years, the principles he shares are timeless and critically important in the years we share with our adult children.

Dr. Hal Habecker and Ken Wilgus discuss the challenges of parenting adult children and the concept of planned emancipation. Ken emphasizes the cultural shift in how children transition to adulthood, noting the lack of a universally agreed-upon method. He highlights the importance of signaling to children that they are seen as adults and respecting their choices. They also touch on the impact of cultural changes, such as expressive individualism, on identity and the isolation it creates. Dr. Habecker stresses the need for Christians to live strong adult lives and encourage their children spiritually, using personal stories and experiences rather than lectures.

Dr. Wilgus has been a practicing psychologist for over thirty years. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.A. from Trinity University and a B.A. from Baylor University. He completed his internship at the Michael Reese Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Wilgus served as Director of Child and Adolescent Services at the Minirth-Meier Clinic in Dallas, Texas. He maintains a private practice in Dallas Texas. Although he is no longer accepting new adolescent patients, Dr. Wilgus consults with parents as well as providing marriage and individual, adult therapy.

Dr. Hal Habecker and Ken Wilgus discuss the importance of planned emancipation in parenting and grandparenting. They emphasize respecting adult children and grandchildren, avoiding overbearing advice, and fostering independent adulthood. Wilgus highlights the need for churches to involve older teenagers in mentoring and to support families with technology and discipline. He advises grandparents to communicate respectfully and not side with grandchildren against parents. They also stress the importance of understanding and engaging with younger generations' beliefs, rather than imposing one's own views. The conversation underscores the role of the church in guiding multi-generational interactions.

Grandchildren play a huge role in our lives as grandparents. Dr. Wilgus will help us
understand the extent with which we can impact and encourage our grandchildren as they age. These truths can be impactful in the developing multigenerational relationship in the church as well.

Aging is a gift. Yet, many of us may not think that way. Typically, our culture speaks of aging in a negative way, and too often we ourselves think of aging in the same negative ways. God disagrees. Rewarding friendships in our aging years are wonderful gifts from God. In this podcast we’ll explore this truth. I hope you will find it rewarding. Pass it on to others. Randy and I will follow with more friendship insights in future podcasts. When I think of rich friendships, my mind runs to a great quote from C.S. Lewis. Enjoy it.

In friendship, we think we have chosen our peers. In reality, a few years' difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another, the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting---any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking, no chances. A secret Master of Ceremonies and Divine Connector has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, "you have not chosen me, but I have chosen you". Jesus can truly say to every group of Christian friends, "you have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another."

Friendship is not a reward for our discrimination and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of all the others. C. S. Lewis. "Four Loves"

In this podcast, Hal and his wife, Vicki, talk about the importance of FINDING

SIGNIFICANCE AS WE AGE

They address these four questions:
1. What happens when you’re no longer a big deal?
2. What happens when you’re no longer the king pin?
3. What happens when you’re no longer the big kahuna?
4. What happens if the world is not waiting with bated breath to know what I’m
doing or what I once did?
In our aging years, do I feel unimportant or even worse, am I even seen, am I just
invisible? How do we see our new significance in our new aging seasons of life?

Let’s learn from his fascinating story. It is recorded in 2 Kings 18-20; 2 Chronicles 29.1-33; and Isaiah 36-39.

Last month I had the privilege of being a guest on ‘Saving Grace Podcast,’ a regular podcast produced by Grace School of Theology, Houston, Texas. My interviewer was a good friend, Tracy Marshall, a fellow church member where we attend. It was a great opportunity to share the work of Finishing Well Ministries with their network and the radio network of Salem Radio Network. I hope you will enjoy what God is doing through FWM and the doors He continues to open to us. Thanks, Hal Habecker

How do we live each day in light of God’s grace and love?

God calls us to influence our world with the truth of God’s love, a love that cannot be earned and cannot be lost. Sharing God’s love with others requires that we first grasp His love for us. Saving Grace provides the listener opportunity to hear inspiring interviews with experts as well as everyday people who love Jesus and want others to know and experience that love and the abundant life Jesus spoke about.

Special guest, Hal Habecker, discusses the aging population and how the church marginalizes their importance.

Hal Habecker interviews Tom Watson, a longtime friend, about his life journey and transition into retirement. Tom shares his upbringing in Pampa, Texas, his education in agriculture and biology, and his career as an anesthesiologist in Texarkana. He discusses the challenges of aging, the decision to retire, and the move back to Dallas to be closer to family. Tom emphasizes the importance of finding a new church and community, and he expresses his desire to continue serving God through teaching and reaching out to neighbors. He advises others to find purpose beyond their job and to live a life that honors Christ.

Retirement brings new opportunities for God to work in our lives. In this interview, Dr. Tom Watson shares his journey, after 40 years of full-time medical practice, into his new retirement season. As we listen to Tom’s story, let’s keep pursuing God as He desires to maximize His work in us through our new extended years. Furthermore, let’s keep telling and retelling the stories about God’s work in us.

By the year 2060, over 95 million people in America will be over 65. That’s an increase of over 30+ million in just 36 years – by then 1 in 4 people will be over 65. How is FWM making a difference? How does God call us and the church to prepare for this population change? Let’s make a difference by being older people committed to God’s purposes in our aging years. Let’s call the church to grow their vision for an aging population.

Life has lots of interruptions and uncertainties. They may be as simple as too many red lights when one is in a hurry, and they may be as profound and life-changing as an unexpected illness or even death. We can also expect that the longer we live these uncertainties of life may even become more frequent for ourselves or with family and friends. Can we prepare for them? How do we prepare for and anticipate them? Hal and Randy will discuss and encourage us as we trust God with life.

The destructive fire of the historic sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Dallas, started Hal & Vicki thinking about their memories of churches that God used in their lives. This historic church is what God used to launch them into ministry. Perhaps this podcast will jog some thoughts in your heart about the churches that have been a part of your life and how God used them to stir your spiritual growth. Happy listening and growing. If you have a chance, please take an extra few minutes and listen to this song by Emily Ann Roberts, “The Building.” Emily Ann Roberts - The Building (Official Music Video) (youtube.com). There are so many things to think about in the topic of “Aging.” We want to address one of those aspects today – the aspect of “Letting go.” Aging teaches us know what it means to let go – “letting go” is a new season of learning – aging teaches us about limits – life changes - churches ought to have active plans to be with and encourage those who are learning to let go as life changes/narrow – as we age. We’ve been learning about this ever since our kids grew up and left our homes. Change is a “letting go” of realities and expectations as we have known them. Death may be a final form of “letting go” – letting go of loved ones and friends – ultimately “letting go” of this life and anticipating heaven and eternity.

There are any number of spheres through which God can use us to make a difference in His kingdom. We can envision this truth through a series of concentric circles – begin with knowing yourself and discover anew how God is calling and leading you to serve and encourage other in the following areas of life - spouse, family, friends and neighbors, and church. Then there may be various volunteer agencies, mission agencies, and local/world needs where God may be leading you to serve. We believe the Spirit of God directs us in all these arenas as we listen to and seek Him.

disappointments and loss of friends and relationships, illnesses, hospitalizations, and other various life

the grief is not your grief personally, you will probably be with others during this season who grieve. We

Finishing Well during the Christmas season may not be “picture perfect.” While we will send and receive countless Christmas cards with pictures of our families that are “picture perfect,” real life is often somewhat chaotic. The 3 or 4 generations in our families will have differing agendas. How do we as the patriarchs and matriarchs listen to and enjoy those who may be totally different in various ways.

How do we love? How do we listen? How do we influence? How do we encourage? Let’s continue to “finish well” this Christmas season.

The 2nd Essential is “Being Connected.” We will CONNECT – we will not live alone – we will continue to build strong friendships – we will stay connected and encourage each other. That is God’s design for friendships.

Christ went above and beyond in His great love for us and therefore calls us to give away our lives for others around us. This could be our families, people in our communities, even the most unexpected people He may bring into our lives that aren't like us. This is the distinguishing mark of the Church in the world and
God is calling us to be those kinds of people. We are to be His arms and His hands to those in need as we go through life, beginning in our homes.

In general, the Bible speaks of generations as 3 generations at a time – Abrahm, Isaac, and Jacob

Deuteronomy 6.2-9 – fathers, sons, and grandsons – and then perhaps great and great, great grandchildren as God allows.

God has us here for those purposes – to teach, lead, mentor future generations.
God calls us to the same multi-generational tasks wherever He takes us – church, schools, community involvement, wherever He leads.

You know, our desire as older people is to change the narrative of our lives. Our culture says we're finished, we're retired, we're over the hill. But I don't believe that we're here as Christians to make a greater difference for Christ. Throughout our remaining years. We want to use all that God has poured into our lives and leave a legacy that will strengthen the work of Christ for generations to come.

In this 6th Essential we think towards what wisdom would teach us as we anticipate nearing the final season of our life. Wisdom would tell us that we should plan ahead for when we will not be here. In practical terms, what does that mean for us personally, for our families, together with all that God has entrusted to us through the years He has entrusted to us?

One of the joys of aging is that God has new purposes and experiences for us every day that we live. Whether it is new people or friends we already know, each day brings new opportunities to get “out of ourselves and love others.” Perhaps its and encouraging word, taking time to listen, a simple act of service, or a new project never before considered, God leads us and He calls us to be available to serve His purposes in life.

In our 7 Essentials series, we complete the series with heaven. But shouldn’t we consider our starting point with the end in view? There is a sense in which the 7th Essential informs each of the previous 6 Essentials. So, let’s begin our review of the 7 Essentials with trying to imagine what heaven might be like and trying to image our new relationship with our heavenly Father. We’ll focus some time reimaging our first day in heaven.

As Christians heaven is our destiny. Even though we do not take enough time to think about and/or prepare for it, in a very real sense heaven is the answer to everything. Looking at all of life through the lens of eternity and heaven ought to make all the difference as to how we live our lives today. We’ll look at biblical truths and we’ll make practical applications concerning the impact of heaven on our lives and the choices we make.

For the past 13 years Hal, along with his son-in-law, Mark McWilliams, have a led a unique 3-day event called “Wine & the Word.” This event takes place in the middle of a vineyard in Healdsburg, CA, Arista Winery, owned by the McWilliams family. In this event, Mark does an “exposition” of the vineyard and wine, while Hal follows him with an exposition of John 15.1-11, where Jesus teaches the spiritual life of His disciples through the metaphor of the vineyard.  This podcast is about that event. To learn more about where this event takes place, see Arista Winery. If you might be interested in being a part of this unique event, contact Hal at hal@finishingwellministries.org

In this 2nd podcast, Vicki continues to interview Joy Evans and hear the sad but life-giving story of her daughter’s death. Listen to how Lana’s death, even after all these years, actually continues to give joy and purpose and peace to others. Joy and her husband Lee have seen God open a pathway so that Lana’s story keeps on leading others to discover God’s ever present grace and compassion. It is equally compelling.
Please consider sharing these two podcasts with others who might have had or who are now walking through similar journeys. Also, Lana’s own personal journal is available if you desire to read her story for yourself. “Hendrick Ministries” is based in the St. Louis, MO area and is one of encouragement, connecting many believers with one another to advance the Kingdom of God.

For years Harold Hendrick has hosted hundreds of radio interviews on KSIV-AM 1320 in St. Louis (owned by the Bott Radio Network — www.bottradionetwork.com).

Hal, with all his other virtues, follows the counsel of that down-to-earth philosopher, St. Louis native Yogi Berra, when he said: “It ain’t over … till it’s over!”

He notes that the word “retirement” is not in the Bible!  Older people have so much to offer that they should not be “turned out to pasture” when they reach a certain age.  They have so much wisdom and experience and … as followers of Jesus, they continue to want to serve Him!

In the radio dialogue with Hal, you will hear the “overflow” of his wisdom and experience.  And we will hear Hal cite Scriptures from the Word of God that reenforces this mindset.
