Years ago, when I became a Christian, I really thought it meant I had to talk a certain way, and read a certain amount of The Bible every day. I was expected to attend church regularly, and thought that it was necessary to display a certain piety that was evident by not cursing, not smoking, not drinking, etc. I had no idea that true biblical righteousness went far beyond these outward displays of spirituality. There is so much more to the Christian life than Daily Bible reading and a Christian-eze vocabulary. God wants more. He wants us to grow in faith and obedience. Today in Exodus, we read a small fraction of the plethora of rules that God lays out for the israelites to follow. Yes, there are rules to being righteous, but they must be the right rules, followed by the right heart and motive. If we follow the rules without caring for the people, we have missed the point of righteousness. God gave the people rules because he cares about them. He loves his people. In fact, he loves people so much that he sent us someone who was perfect in all his rules! He sent his son, as a saviour, to fulfil all of his rules and commandments for those who accept him. In love, Jesus is the culmination of all of the laws and rules laid out in the word of God. In him we have the key to all of his statutes. All-in-one place. And all he wants from us is to love him with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength.

After God rescued the israelites from the Egyptians, he led them into the Sinai desert. Only God was able to keep them alive. He fed them and took care of them. Then God called for a huge prayer meeting, where he would come down to Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. When they needed him the most, God revealed his presence. When we are absolutely powerless to do anything on our own, that seems to be when God is there to pick us up, and work in and through us. As the israelites wandered through the desert, they had no choice but to rely on god's provision for them. Can we challenge ourselves to stop relying on our own strengths, and really lean on the one who loves us enough, and cares for us enough to die so we will be provided for?

Eating the same thing for 40 years. I couldn't imagine. 40 years… that's a long time. It would be really hard to stay positive, even though the bread from God miraculously appeared every morning, without fail. The manna and quail was all the israelites needed to survive and thrive. Yes, God had them March around the mediterranean desert for 40 years, but he still sustained them. He still made sure they had enough to eat and enough to drink . But to the Israelites, these daily miracles became not so miraculous. They grumbled and groaned, longing to be back under the whips of the Egyptians. They weren't happy about taking the long road back to Israel. God took them on that long road to train, protect, and test them. Also to teach them patience. Just as a parent can't give a child everything they ask for, without risking that child growing up expecting to receive everything they want. God was teaching the israelites the discipline of trusting him to provide. And he did provide for their basic needs. For 40 years, nobody had to go out and get a job. Nobody had to work the fields to provide for their family. God provided all the bread and meat they needed to survive. All they had to do was follow him. And walk. For 40 years. Quite often we get impatient with God when he takes us on the longer route. Except the path that he has you on. Be content with god's purpose in your life. Encourage others who are dissatisfied to do the same.
