Not exactly the warm holiday verse we were hoping for, right?

But maybe…
maybe He knew that family gatherings, unresolved tension, old wounds, and differing beliefs would make this command painfully practical.

This week I’ve been praying about a few people I’ll see whose presence feels… tender.
Not unsafe.
Just complicated.

Maybe you know that feeling too.

As I prayed, the Lord reminded me:
“Pat, you don’t need to fix them.
Just love them the way I love you.”

This week, we’re pausing around a theme many of us need right now:
loving beyond lovable.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:

it’s about choosing peace over proving
grace over grumbling
compassion over being right.

When Elijah fled to the wilderness, worn out and afraid, God didn’t meet him in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire.

Those powerful displays came and went, but the Lord’s presence wasn’t in them. Instead, Elijah heard Him in a gentle whisper—a sound so soft that he had to lean in close to recognize it. (1 Kings 19:11–12)

In that quiet moment, God reminded Elijah—and us—that His voice doesn’t compete with the noise of the world. It comes in the stillness, when our hearts are quiet enough to listen.

The whisper of God is intimate, personal, and full of peace. It’s not the shout of condemnation, but the tender voice that restores our strength and calls us forward again.

Our divine assignments are not about never feeling afraid. They’re about choosing faith over fear—obedience over hesitation—even when your knees are shaking.

Like Esther, you don’t need a perfect résumé, a flawless past, or a detailed plan.
You just need the willingness to say YES to God.

So pause and ask yourself:

“Where in my life is God calling me to step up, even though I feel unqualified?”

Your Esther moment might not look like standing before a king. It might look like:

  • Starting or joining that ministry that sets your soul on fire.
  • Writing the book that’s been on your heart.
  • Launching that faith-fueled business.
  • Or having that difficult, but necessary, conversation.

Whatever it is, remember—you are here, right now, for such a time as this.

Don’t let imposter syndrome keep you small or silent. Like Esther, step forward in faith—and watch what God will do.

Merry Christmas friend!

As this year closes and a new one begins--I have a question for you.

Have you ever paused to think about the story your life tells?

We all know it's easy to get stuck in the past, which I very much understand, and help women work towards getting unstuck from their past. But it's often easy to get stuck in replaying moments of pain and shame. God invites us to see our stories through, through his lens, stories of redemption and healing and hope.

Revelation 12:11, reminds us that our testimonies are weapons in spiritual battle.

Your story, no matter how messy or broken it might feel, is part of God's masterpiece. It's part of your armor. It's part of what you fight the enemy with, overcome the enemy with.

Let's PAUSE and think about that!

Every December I find myself returning to the story of Jesus found in Luke 1 and 2.

It is definitely a story of hope and wonder and divine interruption.

This is surely a season of growing still.

Fall is a perfect set up for a time of quiet, slow growth, a time of trust and faith and maybe even loneliness. So I encourage you, wherever you find yourself right now, to pause in the season that you're in and think about the coming season, how you're preparing, what your roots are like, where you might need to focus on some deeper preparation.

I hope you enjoy this prompting to PAUSE and really FEEL the change.

Psalm 7:17 says, I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness.I will sing praises of his name. Most High, the Lord most High. So, Lord, we just thank you for seasons.

God, thank you for the change of seasons, that things do not stay the same, that they are ever changing in your kingdom. In your kingdom work. We happen to be going into a season of some political unrest and some political transition. So keep our roots strong, Lord. Help our faith stay strong in you to know that you are righteous. You will not leave us or forsake us. That even if things look like they're becoming bare or lonely on the outside, you are deep inside of us. Your spirit dwells in us, and our roots are strong in you. In Jesus name.

I recently heard one of my favorite author/speakers use a phrase in random conversation that I could not get off my mind. I was listening to HIS podcast and scribbled a note while driving so would not forget.

The phrase he used was “NET THAT butterfly” in reference to not allowing our thoughts to run away with us. That visual image has stuck in my head now for weeks.

Stinking thinking tends to be a dangerous downfall of mine if I am not very careful and intentional about NOT allowing that to happen.

In the fast-paced world we live in, our minds are often buzzing with a flurry of thoughts, opinions, and arguments. It's as if our brains are a never-ending butterfly garden, with thoughts fluttering about like delicate butterflies, each one vying for our attention.

2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV, that invites us to bring order to that fluttering chaos:

"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ."

This verse presents a powerful imagery of netting butterflies – capturing and subduing our thoughts for the purpose of aligning them with Christ's will.

Let's pause today to consider what it means to "net the butterfly" in the context of our everyday lives.

Everyone needs someone we trust and with whom we can share our story but our most important "share" is with Jesus! He will guide and direct us from there.

We need someone who will keep our story confidential and who will pray with and for us. The more shameful our past seems the more desperate the need.

Because the very thought of surrendering our secret shame frightens us so, we need to FIRST pause in God's presence and consider what "sharing" does and does not mean.

In this episode of Permission to Pause, we dive deep into the bondage of secrets and how they can hold us back from experiencing true freedom in Christ.

We discuss how acknowledging these secrets and leaning on our faith can bring peace, hope, and restoration.

Welcome to Episode 64 of Permission to Pause--part 3 of a 4 part series on SOUL CARE.

If you are a regular listener here on the podcast, you may have noticed for irregular post. I have been a traveling crazy girl! Lots of speaking and ministry work for the past 6 weeks.

I am TIRED.

Can I say that? I think I just did :)

So, this Episode is very timely for me and hopefully for you as well.

I want us to talk about PAUSING TO REST when we need it and receiving help when we need it.

It is so important to seek help and support from people that we trust--family friends are professionals, when we’re going through a tough time or difficult time. It can be so tempting during that time to isolate ourselves.

I have mentioned during this series, my love for the study of Elijah and his escape to the broom tree during a time of stress and exhaustion. I never get tired of being reminded how God met him right there in his place of exhaustion (after some really great feats of ministry).

Let’s pause over the verse we find in First Kings, chapter 19:3-5.

Thank you for joining me on this new podcast series where my goal is to help us PAUSE and consider a NEW SEASON for our SOULS!

Lets talk for a few weeks about getting unstuck from Winter to Spring.

A lot of us, over the last couple of years have dealt with a whole different level of life transition so I specifically want to talk a bit about getting our SOULS unstuck--FROM WINTER TO SPRING?

You might know--my book is called LIFE UNSTUCK (It's on AMAZON!) There are several tools in my Amazon Shop that will help you along this journey.

Right now, on my beautiful little northwest Georgia bit of heaven, there is so much new growth all around our property. I’m looking out through the windows of my She Shed at the gorgeous, wild Day Lilies, Forsythia blooms, Pear trees, Wild Cherry trees, and my favorite is the fabulous Dogwoods right outside my window. They actually line our driveway but have not quite bloomed yet. within the next days or week they are going to be bursting out in beautiful little white flowers. It makes me think about how change of seasons not only effect the natural world but also our emotional and spiritual worlds.

I would imagine wherever you are wherever your listening to my voice you are living with the same fresh natural beauty, as Easter approaches, things start to bloom and turn green all around you but you may be still feeling a bit STUCK IN WINTER emotionally or spiritually!

Lets' PAUSE and think about ways that we can get UNSTUCK from Winter so that we can prepare our souls for a NEW SEASON of Spring blooms!

Matthew 11:28-30

28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Nothing great happens in our lives without PURPOSE. Without INTENTION. Without COMMITMENT.

This invitation in Matt requires a few personal intentions: It requires getting clear about what “me/God” time means to you and sometimes explaining this to the people in your life.

We have Paused together over the past few episodes to consider exactly what the Listening Life looks like.

Hey friend--let's take a moment to pause together.

I always encourage taking a few deep breaths and opening your heart. In recent episodes, we have discussed the listening life, considering our listening skills and the condition of our hearts.

Today, I want to share a habit from Jesus' words that will change your life.

In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus says "Come to me...and you'll recover your life...Learn the unforced rhythms of grace."

Women, especially mothers, are prone to neglecting self-care. We are trained to keep going despite emotional exhaustion, and we often give at the expense of our own well-being. Running on empty leads to feelings of conflict, victimization, anger, exhaustion, and irritability.

However, Jesus invites us to experience the unforced rhythms of grace.

Lets PAUSE together today to consider 5 Places to Pause in the middle of the hustle!

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

—John 10:27 ESV

If you didn’t know, my husband and I have a little hobby farm in Georgia. We have three dogs, a parrot, and three baby goats.

Yes, I know what the Bible says about sheep and goats. To be honest, it stings my soul a bit, I love my baby goats!

Yet, at the same time, I can clearly understand why God’s Word separates them. Sheep are prone to listen to their master. Sheep will follow the lead of their shepherd as they look to him for provision and protection

Goats…not so much.

In fact, I am most at risk of saying naughty words when I’m trying to get my adorable little goats to do (or not do) something.

Friend, the struggle is REAL!

Nevertheless, the revelation of this visible difference between the sheep and goats has caused me to indeed pause and consider the words of Jesus in John 10:27.

Am I a good sheep?

Am I a good listener?

Do I follow my Shepherd?

Together we will take the sacred journey through the Love Letter found in Luke Chapters 1 and 2.

Every year I gather a few close friends and family to share an intentional time of quiet reflection in these timeless scriptures.

Since I am always praying and planning reasons for us to get together here on this podcast--I would love to have YOU join me this year.

Hey there friend-I am so blessed to virtually meet with you today.

Thank you for choosing THIS PODCAST as a place to Pause and Rest in God’s Love for a few sweet minutes.

Today we are going to Pause over the word, TALENT

The scripture that I’m using today is Matthew 25 verses 16 and 21 and 22

14 p“For qit will be like a man rgoing on a journey, who called his servants3 and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave five stalents,4 to another two, to another one, tto each according to his ability. Then he rwent away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more.

20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and xfaithful servant.5 yYou have been faithful over a little; zI will set you over much. Enter into athe joy of your master.’

If you read a bit more of that story in the Bible you will see that not all the servants who were given talents form their Master, were as faithful as this one. I don’t know about you but sometimes I am more like the other guys in the story than I am like this one.

Sometimes I limit --in my own heart in my own mind the talents that I believe that have to offer.

Last episode (number 49) we paused over the word UNLIMITED

Today’s Pause is a bit along that same line of thinking—today we are going to pause and consider our talents and where we might be holding back on our Master, our Father God.

Today the word that I feel like the Lord has put on my heart for us to PAUSE TOGETHER over is UNLIMITED.

UNLIMITED!

Eph 3:16-20 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 

Today’s verse encourages us to PAUSE AND PRAISE the fact that we have THE UNLIMTED POWER OF GOD dwelling inside of us to fight and every battle that rises up against us or those we love.

Do you need the UNLIMITED POWER OF GOD TODAY?

Where do you need it?

For whom do you need it?

God is in the business of unlimited power, provision and protection. 

Lets pause together today to ask God to do the impossible and to be Unlimited in our life today.

Today’s word that I want to us to pause over today is kind of different --the word God has dropped into my heart for us today is cast CAST

C A S T : the definition of caste is to move or send forth by throwing

to get rid of

to throw to the ground as if in wrestling

The scripture that I want us to look at is first Peter 5:7 that says “cast all your anxiety on him for he loves you

Last episode, number 47 I made a confession to you about a fear that I have --a fear of the darkness. I also told you about my two beautiful great Pyrenees puppies . I called them puppies but they are really a year old now and they weigh about 100 pounds apiece . They are truly awesome and beautiful. Very protective but very loving

1 Peter 57 tells us to cast all your anxieties on him for he cares for us

That word CAST made me think about another recent adventure we had with our great Pyrenees puppies--join me for this Episode of Permission to Pause to hear THAT sleazy story!

Ephesians chapter 5:8 says “you were once in darkness but now you are light in the Lord, live as children of the light for the fruit of the light consist in all goodness righteousness and truth”

Lets pause and consider the word LIGHT!
 I have always been afraid of the dark to some degree or another. 

As a little girl I was very scared of the dark and often would cry myself to sleep at night even though I was in a room with three younger sisters most of my young life.

I was petrified of the dark.
 A few evenings ago, I noticed such an interesting thing about the darkness I had never thought about before.

These past few weeks, truthfully-months, have honestly carried a lot of challenges in my life. Well, not my life as much as ones that I love. Still, when we love, we love big right? What hurts them, hurts us. I have been more than simply "tempted" to sink into worry and fear--I have been there! I have prayed passionately for a "miracle" for one of those circumstances. But guess what? I know God is still at work doing what only he can do for those I am praying for. What I did not expect was--(surprise-surprise) He did a miracle in ME! 

As I PAUSED--sincerely prayed, fasted and "pressed in" I did not see the circumstances change as I would have liked. 

What I did see change was me. 

God brought unmistakable peace to my heart. He told ME exactly how I should respond to the needs around me. As He did two songs were on repeat in my heart and mind. 

One was--I have the JOY-JOY-JOY down in my heart. I have the LOVE OF JESUS down in my heart. 

The other was It is WELL with my soul. 

Those THREE WORDS will change your life. 

ALL IS WELL.

Lets' PAUSE for a fe minutes together and consider those 9 letters.

I personally know that I guard my family time, my leisure time, and I sometimes hold my wallet too closely. So, we tend to mark what is ours that sometimes extends our measure of faith. 

In the last episode number 43, we were talking about being reminded of and taking a pulse on our faith level as we transition from one season to another. Today I want us to pause and think about the word mine.

As we step complete our 2nd Summer together and prepare for another change of seasons, I thought we might pause this week and focus on our Faith levels—specifically having Faith IN A SEASONS OF Change.

· But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands. (Psalm 31:14-15)

Can you imagine a tightrope stretched over a quarter of a mile and spanning the breadth of Niagara Falls? The thundering sound of the pounding water drowning out all other sounds as you watch a man step onto the rope and walk across!

This stunning feat made Charles Blondin famous in the summer of 1859. He walked 160 feet above the falls several times back and forth between Canada and the United States as huge crowds on both sides looked on with shock and awe. Once he crossed in a sack, once on stilts, another time on a bicycle, and once he even carried a stove and cooked an omelet!

On July 15, Blondin walked backward across the tightrope to Canada and returned pushing a wheelbarrow.

The Blondin story is told that it was after pushing a wheelbarrow across while blindfolded that Blondin asked for some audience participation. The crowds had watched and "Ooooohed" and "Aaaaahed!" He had proven that he could do it; of that, there was no doubt. But now he was asking for a volunteer to get into the wheelbarrow and take a ride across the Falls with him!

It is said that he asked his audience, "Do you believe I can carry a person across in this wheelbarrow?" Of course the crowd shouted that yes, they believed!

It was then that Blondin posed the question - "Who will get in the wheelbarrow?'

Wow—such a great picture of true faith when things looks really scary, or risky or downright impossible.

There is another story, this one is in the Bible in the book of Daniel—it is a story about three teenagers in the book of Daniel who refused to bow down to false idols required by the king—

When the King heard about their rebellion he commanded they be thrown into a hot burning furnace. Just imagine their confusion when they knew they were doing the right thing—making the God choice-- they could’ve complained God “this is just not fair God, we serve you and look what is happening” but instead these 3 young men chose to stand strong in faith—not like the wheel barrow story of just talking about faith but actually walking into faith—they got in the wheelbarrow--telling the king “we will not bow down, we know that God will deliver us but even if he doesn’t we will not bow”

This beautiful story reveals what true, acted out faith looks like

The end of the story tells us the king actually saw 4 men not three in the fiery furnace “unbound and unharmed” .

As we pause and consider the upcoming change of seasons some of us are facing changes or circumstances that are testing our faith—

But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands. (Psalm 31:14-15)

I have a question for you today—my question is this…

When is the last time you have INTENTIONALLY EXHALED? 

Intentionally let go of a deep breath?

A surrendering breath?

I had a friend ask me that question the other day and it caught me off guard a bit—

We have all heard the phrase—“Don’t hold your breath,” right?

We know what that expression really means—it means—it probably won’t happen; or won’t happen for a long time. 

The message behind that phrase is NOT faith filled. It is rather the opposite.

Let's PAUSE and talk about the power of the EXHALE shall we?!

The call of God is life changing and, in my experience, EVER CHANGING and we have to be ready to follow Him—Lets' Pause and consider....

Is there a DOOR in my life—my purpose, my calling Lord, that you are asking me to open? 

Has a door closed to make a new thing ready? 

Let's pause and pray about that!

Let's Pause and think about some things we absolutely KNOW about our purpose.

Last episode we paused to consider how God created us and what might be His BIG purpose for our lives. Even if we are a bit unsure of some things we think or wonder about God calling us to do, while we WAIT for clarity or even open doors, there are a few things we KNOW!

A few years ago, I wrote a series of gift books called Born to Bloom. I always loved that concept. I fully believe we were each BORN TO BLOOM!

The Bible is slam packed with promises that God has a great plan for each of us. He has a purpose and a “calling” on our lives from BEFORE we were born. I love Jeremiah Chapter 1 where God tells Jeremiah—before you were born, I set you apart and Psalm 139 that says every day is ordained before it comes to be. 

I have trusted and had full faith in that truth since the day I surrendered my life to the Lord. That idea is what I would like for us to Pause and consider today.

Philippians 2:13 says, “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” I love knowing that God is working in and through me for HIS OWN PLEASURE! 

How about you friend?

Do you believe that God has always and still has a plan for your life? 

Do you believe He has a very specific purpose for your life right here and now?

As a woman, just like you, who has navigated many seasons of life—being a wife, a mom, and a now a grandmother; having my own businesses, followed by a call to a full time ministry of speaking and writing—I am well aware of the intentional decision it takes for dedication to pausing in God’s presence.

Just to mention a few of the reason God calls us to pause in has presence.

I had a recent discussion with a family member about a tough choice she was having to make. As we RANDOMLY chatted about this God dropped THE BEST checklist into our hearts.

As smoothly as a butterfly flows to a flower—we came up with these 5 things that are CRITICAL when making a life changing decision.

Admittedly actually FOLLOWING THEM is a bit messier—

Here they are:

  1. Faith (How does this line up with my faith? How is GOD directing me)
  2. Family (what does my family think? Does it affect them?)
  3. Freedom (Do I have FREEDOM in this choice or does it trip me up, make me feel trapped?)
  4. Friends (How are my friend’s responding? Do they think this is a good choice for me?
  5. FUN! (Does this choice bring me JOY? Or is it filled with burden and heaviness?

The day I met my husband is one of those days in my memories.

He know he had me at hello as they say. He had an adorable dimple in his chin, huge blue eyes and a killer smile. I remember his first hello even today 40+ years later. That smile of his still speaks volumes when he looks at me—

As life would have it--today as I came to my prayer chair with prayers already on my lips and praise in my heart for something that is set to occur this weekend that has been fervently prayed out and has much hope involved 

I went to put my coffee down on the little table beside my prayer chair and the entire cup of hot steaming hot coffee tipped over and poured all over everything 

it poured on my Bible 

it poured on my journal 

it poured on the blanket basket sitting next to the table 

it poured down the table and down the walls 

it poured over the electric cords that were tucked behind the little table 

it was quite literally a hot mess

I am getting even more than normal, transparent on the podcast this week with the hope that somebody else is struggling with the same "righteous" strife I am. That's the goal here--learn and grow together. 

The truth is, I have recently allowed myself to feel justified in some areas of strife in my life. I have allowed my response to certain situations or treatment to dishonor God and steal my personal peace.

As I PAUSED this past week, I allowed the Lord to reveal on the pages of my journal those situations where I’m feeling strife right now in my life. As I PAUSED to pray, journal and read the word I began to see the hard truth about Strife's hold on me!

The good news is--I know exactly how to fix that!

My husband Mike was a soldier. He gave his country his 19th year of life while serving in Vietnam in the Marines as a forward artillery observer.

His job was to move ahead of the troops into enemy territory. When he spotted the enemy, he was to call in the artillery. Oh my. I’ve always connected Mike’s assignment on the battlefield to our life assignment as women today.

Mike has never talked much about his days in Vietnam, he’s just never been able to share many of the details about what he saw there. But I’ve seen enough of his heart to know that my husband was changed forever by those 13 months on the battlefield.

As I was writing this chapter in my book Life Unstuck, I asked Mike what five words would describe his time as a marine.

Have you ever wanted to do something that you knew you shouldn’t? Maybe you were headed down a path that seemed good, but it was not the one God had designed for you?

How about when the dream we are dreaming, the illness that needs to be healed, the marriage that needs to be restored, or the child that needs to be conceived has run smack into a huge barrier that says STOP.

Dear God, You alone are the God of the impossible. Open our eyes to see what You are doing right in front of us. Help us to adjust to Your plans and respond with respect rather than resentment. Expand our faith to believe You are as big as You actually are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Maybe even a heartbreak or a loss? 

Let’s pause today and ask Jesus, “Am I ready Lord, if a need or an opportunity or a divine appointment dropped onto my path today? Am I ready to respond?” 

If not, let’s take this pause to ask, “Lord, what do I need to do Lord to be ready? What needs to shift? What needs to be attended to? What needs to be reframed?”
