Start small. Teach the littlest amount of information possible. Over time you can give children the fundamental information they need.
Kids are sometimes given no preliminary instruction and then expected to grasp sophisticated phenomena. Won’t happen without a struggle. Teach them the most basic stuff before you start.

The official story about what happened in Butler is not to be believed. The fiendish evil plot against children is also not to be believed or at least accepted as human. So there you have it, two parallel universes.

You learn a little today and then a little more tomorrow and then still a little more the next day. Just as if you want to build a high brick wall, you start with one row of bricks.
Nowadays, the normal instinctive way to do things is avoided. Somehow the kids are led through the backyard and down the street and around through the garage. Yes, they're confused. That seems to be the essence of how you keep children ignorant, and slow.

There are no good ideas in our public schools, only garbage expressed in protective sauce.
Instead of telling you how to reach your destination, the schools will lay out a program of scuba diving, mah Jong, and fashion tips. You won't get to where you wanted to go. After a while, you won't remember you wanted to go anywhere.
A good illustration of this pessimistic view is the triumphant non-teaching of geography in order to promote the criminal non-teaching of history.

Non-phonics instruction leads to poor reading, anxiety, ADHD, reliance on Ritalin, etc. There is no good reason for teaching with sight-words, except that “experts” insist.
Phonics expert say children typically learn to read in first grade. Requiring children to learn sight-words is typically asking the impossible.
Few humans can memorize even 100 license plates. Why would anyone think that ordinary children can memorize thousands of sight-words?

70 Years Ago, Schools Were Already Warped (Wed., March 27, 2024)
Joan Dunn, a schoolteacher, wrote a book about her experiences in Brooklyn schools circa 1953. It is a time capsule, showing that quite long ago the professors of education had substantially wrecked everything they touched.
I love this book. It’s a grand statement by a very smart sensitive person. Joan Dunn’s description of public schools appeared 70 years ago but already the public schools were a disaster, a crime scene, an intellectual slum.

I think that too often the answer is: no, not really. What we have now is a great range of readers, with only the best being what we used to call readers...

And order a copy of Why Johnny Can’t Read (used, less than $10 on Amazon) so you can read the first chapter, about 22 pages, and then you'll know the whole crazy history of keeping America illiterate.
Flesch’s big mistake was thinking everybody would grasp his short explanation of why sight-words don't work. He thought it was so obvious. One of the most intriguing miscalculations* in history.

Here's the problem simply stated. Much of the Education Establishment is terminally, tragically in love with stuff that doesn’t work. These people are the problem. Those who support them are accomplices. Don't be an accomplice.

Every day they have to concoct some rationale for ideas that they know are borderline at best. But they are very industrious and never take a week off. They have a world to destroy and if they have to destroy your kids, they've accepted the deal. It's nothing personal. Maybe at the end of their career, they'll say they are sorry. Let's get serious about reading. You can teach it only with phonics because English is a phonetic language.
All the other stuff is bogus, a distraction, counterfeit. a perversion, a crime against the next generation.
If you are preparing pedagogy for a slave population or workers who need to read only short instructions, then sight-words are okay.

The Education Establishment has cunningly devolved our school system. Little is taught, little is learned. K-12 is a boring hell for most children.
After Covid was over, the total number of students had dropped by more than 1 million. These children voted with their feet.
Let's stop pretending that the school system is acceptable. It's time to support education reform. That means we figure out what went wrong, and one by one we fix the problems.

The Greeks were so clever. Why not take advantage of this? There are hundreds of memorable quotes left by Greek philosophers, a job they may have invented. Use these quotes to draw children into geography, history, logic, etc..
The pattern in K-12 education, for more than 100 years, is to ask a question: is this material easy, is it simple? If not, let's not make our children uncomfortable. Let's not make them feel stressed or unqualified. And that's how K-12 became as dumb as a brick.
The ed professors are always looking for an excuse to get out of the education business. They should be looking for more interesting ways to stay in that business.

One phenomenon that still shocks me but shouldn't is that our Education Establishment has one peculiar gift: they can riff for hours about literacy and other vital subjects without ever saying anything important.
What our professors tell us is that sometimes birds fly to the east and sometimes they fly to the west and sometimes they move both wings at the same time but sometimes they just glide. In any case we are told just the obvious in weird loops. But we aren’t told causes, or what it means, or where we should go from here.
When Shakespeare talked about a tale told by an idiot, he was talking about our education elite.

You can do something--that's real life. Or you can talk about doing something, which is theory. Too much theory and there's no real life left.
I think that education to an astonishing degree is theory-driven. That's professors talking, talking, talking.
This means concretely that a bunch of highly paid experts could spend a whole day talking about education and never mention a single thing that students need to learn..
Sometimes, just glancing around a room or a street or a scene I'll see something that was never mentioned when I was in school. Actual knowledge, actual facts, these should be the entire essence of teaching and education but in fact they're often the last items mentioned.

Basically, any video content can be the stimulus for somebody's new video content. Now the audience gets two separate contents but merged.
Below are some of my favorites. These are rock 'n' roll because I am a child of rock 'n' roll. But ignore the specifics. Consider the richness of the viewer's experience

What is the favorite gimmick used by Marxists? They promote stupid policies that make society worse. For example, they allow looting and arson in urban centers. For a parallel example, they allow whole word and sight-words in the public schools.
Having created lots of pain and destruction, they claim to be the group that can fix everything. That is the gimmick. Blatantly stupid but not blatant enough because so many Americans accept this nonsense.

The most brutal satire in American literature (Wed., May 24, 2023)
Reading is the central skill we need in school. That is why the far-left has so persistently tried to discredit and discard phonics. Instead, children must memorize the English language one sight-word at a time. Folly.
The passage discussed here is from a famous novel. You might think this satire would laugh the education establishment out of the room. Harper Lee handles this put-down so craftily that most of the targets don't realize that they are being laughed at.
Ask anybody if they remember the education satire in To Kill a Mockingbird. I'll bet not one in 20 remembers. It's not just the pedagogical technique that is the problem. It's the pompous lockstep of the young teachers.

It's a constant irritation to me that our Education Establishment pretends to care about critical thinking or truth generally. They manage to suggest it's like a new suit. You put it on when you want to. Not so. Time and effort are required.

Many public schools insist on teaching sight-words, which guarantees a long slow process. Until the 1930s, our schools taught phonics and we had more than 90% literacy. If you rely on the newspapers you might get the impression the public schools are a jungle. A combat zone. An irrational place no rational person would want to be. Clearly, our schools are out of control and need all the help they can get.
We should call on the people at the top, the highly educated and successful people, the movers and shakers, the executive-types who run our society, all of them have to get more involved in stopping the public school decline. Otherwise you have all these crazy ideologues— you could call them socialists and communists— and they want to turn the United States into a wonderful communist paradise.

When Senator McCarthy told Americans there were lots of Communists in Hollywood and throughout Washington DC, pundits shrieked. That's sick. There are no Communists and if you say otherwise, you're crazy.
This whole experience is much like when you study American K-12 and find there are scores of badly designed, counterintuitive programs and methods at work. If you accuse the Education Establishment of incompetence and malfeasance, they will shriek: how could you be so silly?
Our budgets are relatively huge but international tests (PISA) show we are 17th in reading, 20th in science and even lower in math. No sense of decency? Our Education Establishment would know about that.

Traditionally, Americans believed in competition, knowledge, learning, grades, ability, mastery, truth, logic, all those good things going all the way back to the Greeks.
John Dewey and his socialist cartel rejected all those practices. They want cooperation, fairness, equality, equity, inclusion. Everybody's the same, that's the general idea.
But why? Because if people are all the same and they're all weak, they're easier to control.
Here are two complementary references explaining how the professors of education planned to take down the country:
1) Ed School Follies, a wonderful book published in 2001, explains how John Dewey intended to replace the traditional American school system by controlling all the ed schools. See my Amazon review here.

40 years ago, a congressional commission concluded that our public schools are so bad they might as well be an act of war by an unfriendly foreign power.
The congressional report was titled A Nation at Risk. This is a big deal. It's not some scholar’s opinion. It's not a reconstruction of something far away. It's what the best people in 1983 thought had happened to us. Namely, the wrong people controlled our schools.
The perps were the far-left and the professors of education. They are very skilled at sliding around in the shadows, trying not to leave any traces as they trample to death the very thought of superior public education.

NB: transmogrification is a wonderfully fancy word that perfectly describes a long complex process by which you transform something mediocre into something excellent or, as in our national tragedy, the opposite.

Here's what children need to be told about school, and why they need to be told.
K-12 is like Bernie Madoff's Ponzi. Many thousands of customers thought their money was safe, and making more money every day. Until one day they were told they had no money. All gone. All a sham.
And these were sophisticated people, rich people, smart people, successful people. And they have to face the fact that they were pathetic victims of a con.
What chance do ordinary people have against this level of trickery. What chance do the kids have?
The odds are much better if they confront the reality they're in.

Episode 80: George Carlin and The Truth about American Education (Wed., Jan. 11)
Are vastly rich industrialists mainly greedy? That's the common assumption, as Karl Marx explained.
George Carlin seems to echo the same vision. The people running our society, or ruining it, are propelled by greed. Even with the very successful people, I don't think greed is the whole answer. Probably it's too simplistic, because that's the kind of thinking Marx did. (Basically, Marx said that money -- i.e., Capital -- explains everything.)
In particular, if we want to explain our hard-left (and our berserk education establishment), money doesn't take us very far.My own sense is that these people are motivated more by psychological compulsions. They like being able to boss people around.
If you think of them as sociopaths, their behavior is much more logical.

Episode 79: Critical Thinking — how to teach it to children (Wed., Jan. 4, 2023)
Teaching something, anything, is the first order of business and the sacred obligation of every school. What we have instead in America is tens of thousands of schools where students spend millions of hours each year but at the end of the year they know hardly one bit more than they did at the beginning.
The common problem is letting all content be taught in a swirl of confusion. Schools should organize and prioritize knowledge so it's easy to understand and absorb.
I see that I did an earlier piece about critical thinking, Episode 46. The topic is very much in education news. Nobody seems to know how to do it. Meanwhile it illustrates the broader problem. Professors of education announce some new initiative said to be of great value. But it turns out to be not new, and not of any value. Mainly we see incoherence and inefficiency. in Episode 46 and now in 79, I try to show that there is always a simpler, more efficient way to proceed.
The two approaches are complementary, and both are valuable.
Let's Fix Education is for connoisseurs of education. You want to understand what's actually wrong in the classroom. You want to find better ways to do things. Typically, we see broad sweeping recommendations (more money; more parental involvement; more community involvement; deeper learning; higher learning; 21st-century learning; etc.), but none of this is based on identifying the specific malpractices that are causing all the trouble. If you teach children in the worst possible ways, you can expect the worst possible results. That is what our Education Establishment ruthlessly does. Here's the bottom line: phonics is essential, because it’s a mnemonic device for dealing with a huge language like English.
If you don't have the phonics sounds to remind you how to pronounce the words, you will struggle and stall.
College students need more than 100,000 words. A computer might master that many sight-words but if we are talking about your kid, you can forget it.
America had universal literacy until 1931 when the Education Establishment insisted that we drop phonics and use sight-words. Now we have universal barely-literate.
If you agree that we should dumb down the American population, you will surely love sight-words.
Remember that the basic premise was that you first teach children to read and then they can teach themselves. That's the next step which our schools have cleverly, cunningly, criminally made impossible.

The perennial problem is that authoritarians always want more power. One quick way to get it is to change the meaning of words. That is, to play games with the language. What to do about this?
Always preach the virtues of simplicity, sincerity, transparency, and honesty. Say what you mean, and mean what you say. These are the lessons that should be taught to all children in the early grades. Think for a minute how indebted we are to George Washington for never telling a lie, or at least saying so. That's how some really ruthless people were able to kill so many millions of victims in several countries. We need to have more honesty, more realism, in our society and in our schools, so we can see the totalitarian mechanism as it starts to happen.
The problem for education is that these ruthless schemers naturally try to use education to their advantage. They will change education, they will subvert education, they will pervert education. Episode 19: Big Lies in K-12 (Nov. 3, 2021)
Public school are full of dishonesty and deception. Parents have to deal with this. First, understand what's going on. Second, take steps to work around the problem.
Here's the background. The Education Establishment has concocted many ways of undermining K-12 education, typically by lying about what is possible or helpful. The simplest technique for dumbing down America is the most pervasive gimmick of all—don't try to teach very much. The professors are full of excuses and alibis: kids don't need to know certain information, they will never understand other information. In any case, teachers shouldn't teach anything directly, let the kids figure it out for themselves.

Episode 18: Why Liberal Arts Education is Good for Everyone (Oct. 27, 2021)
Why have American public schools gotten dumber and dumber over the last hundred years? Simple. Because the schools have systematically driven out the most important ingredient: knowledge. And the importance of knowledge is not knowing lots of miscellaneous facts, it's being able to analyze and assess those facts.

True story, most of the work I've done in my life is related to journalism, writing, publishing, editing, et al. I wanted to think the professionals controlling our daily papers are people like me. I wanted to think well of them. Big mistakes. Fifteen years late, I realize that the people running the New York Times are similar to the people in control of the K-12 school system. They are ideologues before they are anything else. For their ideology, they will lie and they will betray.
I believe these ideologues are in charge of a meta-project which Charlotte Iserbyt titled "The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America." My audience, in all my writing about education, is people who are sick of dumbing down and would like to see some smartening up for a change.

I think the real reason the student-centered sophistry was concocted is that adults don't want to say no to children. if you're told that children wouldn't like a certain idea, you think, okay, let's get rid of it. You see how this turns the world upside down.
Reading this article again, I realized that my favorite phrase is "truth centered." In the last few years, I started to think of K-12 as a crime scene and a fraud. Not enough truth, that's the problem.

Episode 10, Sept. 1: Max Efficiency: How To Study A New Subject
Some suggestions on how to make education more efficient.
School is starting. There are many clever young people, probably on a trajectory toward college, who will find value in these ideas. Weird but true, I don't think the Education Establishment thinks in terms of efficiency. If we would let them, they will spend a whole year on global warming and critical race theory, even if the ostensible subject is literature, math, geography, etc.
I think it's good for students to know there is something of an adversarial relationship between them and the public school system. Administrators tend to be satisfied with mediocrity. So let's teach the students to think independently and to fend for themselves at a high level.

Episode 9 summary: why dyslexia is for the most part a fraudulent spin on a common school problem. Children don't have dyslexia so much as the schools give them dyslexia-like symptoms.
Public schools routinely claim that 15-20% of children have dyslexia. Done deal. Nothing you can do about it. Phonics experts say real dyslexia is virtually nonexistent. The problem is that our schools insist on using instruction that doesn't work. This bogus instruction is variously called sight-words, whole word, whole language, etc. They might also be called the road to dyslexia.
