Pastor Tim sat down again with pastor and economist Jürgen von Hagen to discuss the religion of global warming. It is the nature of mankind to want to be involved in something big. What's bigger than acting to save the Earth? Yet, basing our actions and governmental policies on scientific models is a complicated venture. What does Scripture say about global warming? What is the solution to global warming? What is the greatest natural resource available? Should you leave your car running when you pop into the grocery store? Is God sovereign over global warming? What are the creation commandments and do they offer any answers?

Out of Our Minds is back with a new voice. Mr. Andrew Henry—entrepreneur, musician, and all-around curious man—will join Pastor Tim Bayly for the upcoming episodes. Sometime soon we'll have Mr. Henry introduce himself on the podcast.
Today's episode answers, "Does it take a church to raise a child?" When parents enter new territory with teenagers, how can they teach their children to love the church? What could competent parents possibly need from the church in relation to their children?

A lot of people come to an understanding of biblical sex roles late in life. Sometimes, late in marriage. Sometimes, they haven't had it modeled for them by their own families or by the churches they come from. Sometimes their understanding of a wife's submission can be ... really wooden. So ... how can they not be like that?

Last month, Tim Bayly resigned as the senior pastor of Trinity Reformed Church. It may come as a surprise to you if you’re not from our church, but it’s actually been in the works for many years. Tim and Mary Lee served this church faithfully for 25 years, and we threw a party to celebrate God’s goodness to us through their faithful service. This episode was recorded about a month ago, right after that party.
This is the penultimate episode of the Out of Our Minds podcast in this format. That is to say, next week’s episode will be the last one that I host. Tim Bayly will, Lord willing, continue to podcast in the future, but you’ll hear more about his upcoming plans in the episode.
There’s another half to this conversation, so I hope you stick with us and tune in next week.

Pastors are called by God to use everything at their disposal to point people to heaven. That means pastors have to lay it all out on the line for others. They have to go for the heart.

Real relationships are difficult, and rarely are there easy answers when conflict comes along. If your goal is to avoid relational conflict, then you don't actually have real relationships. In this episode, pastors Tim Bayly, Max Curell and yours truly will challenge you to love others in a way that is difficult and risky. It is the way.

This is the second half of our conversation about the crisis of authority in our culture, and one of the main points we make is about the connection between authority and responsibility. I love the way that Tim ends the conversation: don’t worry about restoring authority, just start taking responsibility for others. And it’s true! If you do that well, with love and humility, authority will be restored, to the glory of God.
We put a lot of links in the show notes for the first half of this conversation, and we encourage you to take a look at them here.

Today we are going to talk about the crisis of authority in our nation. Whether you’re talking about the president of the United States or dad in the home, you’d have to be living under a rock to miss the fact that there is a general breakdown of trust for those in authority all across our society.
So how are we as Christians supposed to respond?

There’s always law and gospel. Elon Musk’s good news is that we can rescue the world from destruction through ingenuity and hard work.
But it’s a lie, and Elon Musk is a wuss.
God is the one with whom we have to do. You can judge God all you want, but in the end, he’s the one who will do the judging. The judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether. God has judged us and found us wanting, but He has also provided a way of escape through His Son, Jesus Christ.
If You, LORD, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with You,
That You may be feared.Psalm 130:3-4

Today’s conversation is all about how you can be right with God. This is a topic that I chose because I think it’s so important. I see the whole red pill movement and Jordan Peterson and all that stuff as our culture waking up to our need for law. And compared to the insanity of critical theory and transgender ideology and all that rot, Jordan Peterson’s 12 rules for life sounds wonderful. Sane!
But as pastor Max points out in the conversation, the law that Jordan Peterson or anyone else teaches cannot save you. Scripture teaches that we are saved by faith, and so we get in to what it means to have faith.

We would be pleased never to link to Patheos due to the paganism and lies they publish, doing so religiously (so to speak). Still, this piece on the background of Justice Barrett and that background’s debt to author Stephen B. Clark is worth reading. Clark is the brother who wrote the book we recently reprinted, Man and Woman in Christ. I think the piece, then, is necessary background to what we should expect from Barrett’s work on SCOTUS. – TB

Today, we circle back around and talk about birth control and contraceptives again. We got a little push back from the last episode, and so we hope to clarify, improve, and sharpen our teaching on this very important topic. Today, we talk about companionship in marriage. Marriage is a mission, and a man and a wife cannot be two ships passing in the night if they hope to complete the mission with any success. Two ships passing in the night is not Christian Marriage. So today in our conversation, we try to give our listeners a vision of sweet companionship in Christian Marriage.

The universal testimony of both Scripture and the Church through the ages has been to oppose the use of birth control. And yet, even the most conservative churches in our country have completely embraced it and consider child-bearing and contraception to simply be a question of stewardship. I hope our conversation today is challenging, helpful, informative… but mostly, I hope it strengthens your faith. There’s nothing quite so wonderful and scary as bringing a child into the world. It’s risky, and therefore terrifying. But God gives grace for the work, and there are joys you will never know apart from the work - and pain - of raising children.

We live in a country where 50 shades of gray is released in the theaters on valentines day. This is the state of our understanding of love between a man and a woman. It's godless and loveless. And much of that thinking has seeped into the church.

You can almost think of today’s episode as a bit of premarital counseling. My goal going into the conversation was to talk about the challenges of getting married and how young Christian couples will be different and stand out in their approach to marriage in a world gone mad. How does a young couple who wants to honor God with their sexuality approach marriage differently than everyone else?

Our liturgy for a wedding is based on the marriage solemnization found in the 1549 Book of Common Prayer. It lists these three purposes for marriage:
First, marriage is given for the mutual society, help, and comfort that man and wife should have from the other, both in prosperity and adversity. Second, marriage is given for the procreation of children, to be brought up in the fear and nurture of the Lord, and to the praise of God. Third, marriage is instituted as a remedy against sin, and to avoid fornication, so that those who are married might live in the purity of marriage, and keep themselves undefiled as members of Christ’s body. These purposes have been foundational to our understanding of Christian marriage in the West for many centuries, but they sound foreign to our modern ears. And so we talk about them in this this episode.

If you want to disciple your teenagers to love Jesus Christ, you have to train your girls to be women and your boys to be men. In other words, to live out our God-given sexuality is Christian discipleship. And yes, you will be persecuted for teaching Biblical sexuality to your children, and they – if they choose to pick up their cross and follow Jesus – will be persecuted for living it. But we cannot talk about raising teenagers without talking about teaching them to submit to God in regard to their sexuality.

In this episode, I push the men to discuss the distinction between working with your mind and working with your hands. And I do that, I think, because I feel some amount of guilt and shame over the fact that I am not especially good working with my hands.
Many young Christian men are in the same boat.
A guy like that is very susceptible to others who tell him that he has to hunt or build his own house or live on a farm if he’s going to be a real man. Those things involve work that is very good, but those works do not define what it means to be a man.
As we mentioned last week, the foundation of work is in the cultural mandate for us to take dominion over the earth. And there is absolutely a manly way to do that. But the essence of it is not in knowing how to program a computer or build a house, but rather in taking responsibility for yourself and for others out of love to them and love to God.
And, of course, we live in a physical world! So that means you must be willing to tackle physical work when it comes your way, and cheerfully! And as Christians, we don’t look down on physical work, we honor it.
Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

We believe that fellowship with other Christians in church and in small groups is central to our faith. Social distancing and mask mandates, however, make fellowship very difficult, and, at times, impossible. So what is a faithful Christian to do? Are we duty-bound to submit to the mandates, or to break them? Or… something else? It’s not an easy topic to unravel, but we do our best.

COVID has everyone on a short fuse, and we like to take out our anger on those in authority over us. That's not right.
Title a little dramatic? Yeah, it's true. But conservative Christians are terrified about COVID restrictions because they believe they are a harbinger of bad things to come. So today we try to address those fears and the visceral reaction to COVID laws on the part of conservatives in this country.

Conflict is inevitable in this world of sin. It just is. If you understand that, then you’ll be able to understand that a godly man’s goal in conflict is to bring peace. Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” A peacemaker is not a man who has flowers in his hair. A peacemaker is a man who has mud on his face and blood on his shirt because he’s been doing the hard work of making peace.

Do you expect your pastor to make judgements about you? We would have no hesitation in saying "yes" to the question if we were talking about a doctor or a football coach of a piano instructor. We want those people in our lives because we want them to form us. We want the doctor to accurately diagnose our diseases and help us be healthy.
But we are unwilling to receive the same kind of treatment from a pastor. And, the truth is, many pastors don’t even believe they are supposed to make a diagnosis at all, let alone get involved in actually helping us heal. But that’s precisely what a pastor is called to do.

Preachers during the Second Great Awakening used emotional manipulation to "convert" the masses, and Reformed pastors have been leery ever since then about appeals to emotion. But a pastor must preach to both the mind and the heart. In the Reformed world, we place a very strong emphasis on truth and doctrine, and that’s all to the good… unless we become tin men who are incapable of actually loving another human being.
As you listen to this conversation, you’ll notice that we spend a lot of time talking about sexuality (which, if you know us at all, is not surprising), and you may think that we’ve left off talking about pastoral leadership as it pertains to this issue of the mind and the heart. But keep your eye on the ball, because really what we’re doing is opening up a case study to help us understand the issue better. There is nothing more objective than “He made them male and female,” but these days, we can't even have separate bathrooms for men and women.

Hebrews 13 reminds us that our pastors have the awful responsibility of watching over our souls. One day, they will give an account to God for their work. That’s a scary thought. Many pastors downplay their position as a pastor to try to get the perks of the job without feeling the weight or the pain of it. We begin our conversation today by talking about one of the ways pastors hide their authority and avoid taking responsibility for their people. This leads us to a discussion about Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and Pastor Bayly opens up for us why Solzhenitsyn was such an inspiration to him.

Today we turn our attention to music and worship. Music is powerful. It moves our emotions and shapes our desires, and these are not secondary things for a Christian. Just like our minds need instruction, our hearts and wills need to be directed. The songs we sing in church, therefore, just like the preaching of the Word, should be aimed at the people in the pews.

The pastors on this show all serve at Trinity Reformed Church, an Evangelical church here in Bloomington, Indiana. We are unapologetically, unequivocally, Evangelical.
