Sangeeta Sharma of Calgary and Arvind Katyal of Ottawa share stories of their recent travel from India to Canada after the flight ban. The inconvenience aside, they say that despite being Canadian citizens, they were treated like second-class citizens upon their arrival in Canada on account of their ethnicity.

Conversations like this one drive the need for TC-SAN. Our guest Dr. Sonia Aujla-Bhullar breaks down a few of the many intricacies that imbibe racism, and its context in Canada, especially with a South Asian Canadian lens.

This conversation was much needed after the terrorist attack in London, Ontario that killed 4 members of a Muslim family, and also after the findings of 215 indigenous children bodies found in Kamloops residential school.

"The stereotypes about Aboriginal people being drunk, a drain on the system, violent ... is stuff I grew up with my whole life.": Les Jerome, Instructor Emeritus of Social Work at U of C, and of of Anishinabe/Michif descent.

We talk to Les today on a topic many of us New Canadians have difficulty understanding. The only way to understand anything is to ask questions, and listen. Let's listen to Les today, and form more questions after 'critical thought' and perhaps ask those questions again next time to expand our learning.

What we discuss with Les:

8:00 = Why are there not many aboriginal students in Universities?

18:30 = “We've always known”, says Les. (referring to the 215 children found in Kamloops)

26:30 = What are some of the ways that the immigrant communties can be better allies to the Indigenous communities?

29:30 = What if the 215 children found for non-native, would the response and acknowledgement have been stronger?
