Unpacking Mormonism: Recent Episodes

Sarah Westbrook

Unpacking is in the title of the show and it applies to all of us; being self-aware requires us to be critical of unhelpful patterns, but we also have to give credit and forgive ourselves as well. Understanding why you did what you did, is extraordinarily helpful.

Sarah an ex-Mo and licensed counselor on a journey to unpack Mormonism and other religious trauma is joined by her husband Mason, a former bishop and active member of the Mormon church.

Sarah and Mason have been married for 23 years and have 7 children together. Sarah is an author, podcast personality and counsels in her private practice. Mason is a retired Army officer and registered nurse anesthetist.

We hope our show will demonstrate how to communicate with respect on difficult topics that we don't always agree about; but still take time to have a chuckle about our personal foibles and peeves. This is of supreme importance as we learn about ourselves.

Using the lessons in our podcasts, you will learn how to become your authentic self and that you can still be in a good place, even with changes to make in your life.

We love hearing from you, drop us a line and let us know how your heart and head are doing. daisygirlcommunications@gmail.com

"If Sarah is feeling rage or anger, what that normally looks like for me is that in my forehead, I get really tight or my face will get really hot. My jaw gets clenched. I tend to like grind my teeth when I'm angry. or frustrated or definitely when I'm raging I don't feel like I can swallow as much so my mouth will fill up with a lot of spit my chest will be pounding like I can hear and feel my heart my biceps my arms my hands they all start to shake I tend to or want to hit punch throw things when I'm in a rage. My stomach gets really hot and tight, like I can feel automatic indigestion. It's like my body becomes hyper aware of that. My knees and legs actually feel kind of weak, which might seem off. You know, a lot of people are like, oh, I get a surge of energy all through my body so that I can run in whatnot I don't get that in my legs I tend to get really weak and in my upper body I get that energy which is probably like throwing hitting punching uh I am a fighter when I get angry so I utilize my words the most I notice that my back will get stiff and sore but my bum so here we've got our bum and our groin we do have a lot of nerve endings there..."

Hello, and welcome to Unpacking with Sarah. I'm your host, Sarah Westbrook, a licensed professional counselor in multiple states, here to talk about what we're going to be doing with our new show. So grab a coffee and sit down with us. Our goal is to, excuse me, broadcast live every Thursday morning at nine o'clock central. And as you can see from behind me, we are broadcasting from my farm. This is my actual front yard of the farm, the Daisy Girl Wellness and Rehabilitation Farm, which we can talk about at another time. I also wanted to wish everybody a happy Fourth of July.

So this is if you're watching this later, it is July Fourth of twenty twenty four. It is Independence Day here in the United States. That's my Independence Day. Cowgirl hat. I'm going to be out riding here after we're done recording. I am deeply, deeply grateful for the sacrifices of the men and women who made it so that we could live a very privileged life here in the United States. I have had the opportunity to travel to multiple areas across the world, and we truly are a blessed country. we truly do have many privileges that people in other parts of the world do not. So thank you to our men and women in arms, those and those who support those families, both from the distant past and today. Very, very, very grateful for your sacrifice. So what is unpacking with Sarah all about? So as I said before, professional counselor.

And the things that I see for a lot of my clients is they'll come out, they're making great strides, they're making progress, but one hour dedicated a week to driving to counseling, sitting through counseling, driving back to work or home. So it ends up being a two hour ordeal both ways. And the cost, the going cost right now for if you're a cash pay client or counseling is anywhere from about a hundred to a hundred and eighty dollars an hour session. There are so many of us who just can't afford that. I mean, I'll be honest, me paying cash outright for counseling would make my access very limited and I'm crazy busy.

So even the time commitment can be very, very difficult. I'm here to bridge that gap. I the other thing I notice in counseling is that oftentimes and other podcasts is we get a lot of theory. We get a lot of really great ideas, but we miss the application piece. We don't necessarily know automatically how to turn those ideas into action. into something that is usable, something that we can apply in our day-to-day lives. And so, again, we're here to bridge that gap. I want to, again, dedicate today's introduction to freedom, but I want to dedicate it to the freedom from maladaptive thought and behavioral patterns.

We all have them. myself included. And I want us to be able to learn skills, understand the theory, and then apply them in such a way that we can release these patterns that are no longer serving us well. Those things that, you know, we have really great intentions. We've got, you know, they're genuine. We want self-improvement. And our outcomes just aren't meeting the goals or the hopes that we had desired. And so I'm here to help you do that and to give you this podcast, this, you know, weekly wisdom that will help you go from the, I understand all of this content I'm hearing and put it into practice in your daily lives. I have worksheets that are coming. We're going to have the how-tos.

We're going to break it all down very simply, the same way I would for my clients in session. So you're going to be able to access a lot of these resources. at low or no cost to you. The things that I'm teaching you here for educational purposes, only if you are working with a personal care provider, I want you to be able to take the things that you learn here, the worksheets that you're gaining from here that we will make downloadable for you to your counseling sessions or to your group sessions or your life coaching or wherever it is to your personal care providers. and apply this or add it to what they are doing. If you find that it is meaningful to you, well, then let's use it. I am a buffet. You do not have to eat everything on the menu.

Take what works for you, leave what doesn't. I am super excited to start this project. We will, and hopefully, fingers crossed, about eighteen months to two years, release the workbook that this podcast is helping us create. So you will be able to buy that anywhere books are sold. And that is the goal, that we start these podcasts, we get our audience's feedback, and then we put all of the skills that really resonate best with you, with the audience, into a book that you can share with your friends and family, things that you can do at home.

So please join me on our mission to self-improvement through learning, growing and becoming who you really want to be, your true authentic self. Thanks so much for joining me today. Enjoy that morning coffee and fireworks later this evening. We'll see you next week. Bye-bye.

Mason and Sarah also delve into the use of the term 'Mormon' in their conversations. They discuss how it relates to their personal experiences and the recent changes in its usage by a certain individual.

Please, let's give a special thank you to the Westbrook kiddos for joining Sarah and Mason for today's topic.

What if you were taught that a person's entire salvation (as in going to heaven or hell), a person you had never met and is now, in fact, dead, was dependent on you being baptized for them? You read that right, friend. Do you even have a choice if that were the case? I mean...we are talking hell here. The worst place ever...it's gonna be rough.

From Wikipedia -

Baptism for the dead, vicarious baptism or proxy baptism today commonly refers to the religious practice of baptizing a person on behalf of one who is dead—a living person receiving the rite on behalf of a deceased person.

Baptism for the dead is best known as a doctrine of the Latter Day Saint movement, which has practiced it since 1840. It is currently practiced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), where it is performed only in dedicated temples, as well as in several other current factions of the movement. Those who practice this rite view baptism as an essential requirement to enter the Kingdom of God, and therefore practice baptism for the dead to offer it by proxy to those who died without the opportunity to receive it. The LDS Church teaches that those who have died may choose to accept or reject the baptisms done on their behalf.

Baptism for the dead is mentioned in (1 Corinthians 15:29) as proof of a physical resurrection, though the exact meaning of the phrase is an open question among scholars. The plainest reading of the Greek text suggests vicarious baptisms performed by the living on behalf of the deceased, but some scholars dispute whether Paul approved of the practice or whether the verse truly refers to an actual physical practice among early Christians.[1] Early heresiologists Epiphanius of Salamis (Panarion 28) and Chrysostom (Homilies 40) attributed the practice respectively to the Cerinthians and to the Marcionites, whom they identified as heretical "Gnostic" groups, while Ambrosiaster and Tertullian affirmed that the practice was legitimate and found among the New Testament Christians (though Tertullian later recanted his original beliefs in his later life as he became associated with Montanism).[2] The practice was forbidden by the Councils of Carthage in the last decade of the fourth century AD, and is therefore not practiced in modern mainstream Christianity, whether Nestorian, Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, or any traditional Protestant churches.

We welcome Kayla and Jordan back to the show as we continue through our temple series. In this episode, we talk about temple admittance. Chastity, tithing, moral cleanliness, and, of course, you must not support anything contrary to the church.

The Mormon church requires a lot, but according to them, they need you to obey because they want to save your soul from hell and allow you to chill and hang with your family in the afterlife. Unless you are a woman, and then you have to have babies endlessly.

Do you believe in hell? Do you think the afterlife sounds good? Do you want to have babies endlessly as you repopulate your new ethereal plane?

We were hoping you could come sound off at the private FB group because we want to hear from you and understand your point of view.

As we approach the holidays, we sometimes need reminders to leave space for ourselves to have human reactions to situations, people, scenes, and communication loops with friends, frenemies, relatives...relenemies? Yes, and maybe some people who we think treat us like enemies. "Dear Sarah and Mason. I recently had a heated exchange with a colleague I work with. They had some valid issues, entirely fair, but the tone and volume were hostile and mocking at times, and with no space to allow me to respond. When prompted to respond, I would be interrupted and mocked or told I was wrong..." Get Trauma Bonded on Audible. https://www.audible.com/pd/Trauma-Bonded-Audiobook/B0CJRZ1YWS

What do you know of the Heavenly Mother? Have you ever spoken with her? Felt her presence?

The power of days by Celeste Mergens.

https://a.co/d/2kbQKYo

From Church of Jesus Christ.org:

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics-essays/mother-in-heaven?lang=eng

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that all human beings, male and female, are beloved spirit children of heavenly parents, a Heavenly Father, and a Heavenly Mother. This understanding is rooted in scriptural and prophetic teachings about the nature of God, our relationship to Deity, and the godly potential of men and women. The doctrine of a Heavenly Mother is a cherished and distinctive belief among Latter-day Saints. While there is no record of a formal revelation to Joseph Smith on this doctrine, some early Latter-day Saint women recalled that he personally taught them about a Mother in Heaven.

Dear listener, the trigger warning from episode #208 should have also included that, in general, it is a really difficult listen. Yes, Jodi said mobile phones will turn you gay and are more dangerous than a gun.

Codependency is a trauma response. It's a coping skill; a survivor tries to micro-manage or control people to feel better or safe. Let's ensure we aren't talking about toxic dependency, which is overly reliant on others; this subtle difference makes a huge difference when understanding the resulting behaviors.

We often dance around this question on this show; well, not so much dance around it. As we torpedo into it continuously with our bodies from a high dive into the swimming pool, that is the topic. Regardless, in this episode, we take Mormonism through the rigors of the B.I.T.E. model and try and establish if it fits the criteria for a cult, and the answer might surprise you. No, not at all. Of course, it hits the criteria for a cult; most, if not all, religions and systems can have cult-like attributes, but that doesn't mean they are all cults.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.” - C.S. Two things that Sarah says. Boundaries are meant to protect the individual who sets them and attempting to control another's behavior by setting boundaries will fracture relationships. A question for you today dear listener. Do you often, sometimes, always...think you are the smartest person in the room? It's almost never true. Why does it matter?

Why do we judge others by perceived intelligence or their vocabulary?

Next week, for the first time ever, Mason flys the starship Unpacking Mormonism solo. Can he keep the studio from catching fire? How will he function without Sarah flirting with him to start the show? Will he refer to himself as handsome? So many questions! Here is a clip to give you a taste.

Another burning question you might have. Where can you watch these Throwback Thursday live streams that Sarah has been hosting? So glad you asked dear listener.

The intent of this episode is to identify how we all can grow as human beings, even our host Sarah Westbrook. What better way to show that, than with a recent Facebook drama that helped Sarah see how she made life difficult for someone that she loves. Sarah also announces the release date of her book, on a very important date...hint, it involves a special group of six.

Other than bringing you one of the best psycho-education podcasts around, we also have a private Facebook group for you that is filled with dank memes, daily posts, support and encouragement. What the heck is taking you so long, get on down there and let us hear from ya.

Did Joseph Smith rarely mention The Book of Mormon in his sermons? Our intent for today is to identify within yourself when you have been triggered. The recording of this episode was around the time of the LDS General Conference, which seems to have triggered some accurate, some powerful and some not very helpful chatter around how a lot of those within the Mormon community are triggered by the speeches at the conference.

So let's make sure we don't respond in a toxic way, and our reactions are representative of our true selves, our best selves, our authentic selves.

Sarah was in her master's program for mental health counseling when she began to recognize how often her voice was being silenced within the LDS church. Her academic work, her research was getting notoriety but it wasn't until a peer utilized her insights to further learning for a class, that she realized just how long her voice had been muted within the Mormon community. To relieve us of our best men. They relieved us of Joseph and Hyrum. I don’t want the advice or counsel of any woman. They will lead us down to hell. When I want sisters and the wives of the members of this church to get a relief society, I will summon them to my aid, but until that time let them stay at home. And if you see females huddling together, veto the concern. And if they say Joseph started it, tell them it is a damned lie, for I know he never encouraged it.

DSM-5-TR 2022; Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders https://www.psychiatry.org/psychiatrists/practice/dsm/educational-resources/dsm-5-tr-fact-sheets

This quote shows the narcissistic gaslighting tactics routinely employed by the leaders of the Mormon church. After citing their credentials, asserting their dominance, and shaming the audience for questioning, a bold claim that rejects the skeptical mindset is made. The audience is subsequently directed to simply “trust” those in authority. Such rhetoric is invalidating, discourages exploration and free thought, completely lacks even a shred of empathy, and is thus abusive to active, struggling, and former Mormons alike.

https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2017/11/26/commentary-the-gaslighting-within-mormonism-must-stop/

My view is that being open about our history solves a whole lot more problems than it creates. We might not have all the answers, but if we are open (and we now have pretty remarkable transparency), then I think in the long run that will serve us well. I think in the past there was a tendency to keep a lot of the records closed or at least not give access to information. But the world has changed in the last generation — with the access to information on the Internet, we can’t continue that pattern; I think we need to continue to be more open. Stephen Snow, Church historian.

A narcissist has the ability to turn on feigned decency, compassion, generosity, assistance (or whatever will work) to groom people to their own purpose.

He shares a story about setting a boundary in a romantic relationship, that ultimately led to him doing the healthiest thing for both him and his partner...walking away. We also talk about how often times the pleasures of sex are still portrayed as shameful, even after marriage within a religion's rules.

Spoiler: Sex is beautiful and can be very spiritual.

Hopefully you aren't reading this in line at a retail establishment, ready to go full feral to get a deal on a TV. In Sarah's words, no one wants to shop with that many active amygdalas, besides we got plenty of 1s and 0s for you here if you need some digital food.

Welcome to the grand finale of our five part series on what Sarah found antithetical to living a mentally, physically and spiritually healthy life. She shares deeply with her experiences both lived, read and researched and how they were completely opposite of what the LDS church professed to be about. These issues are massive, world reaching and beyond any borders. They were unacceptable and kept her from growing into what she felt was her best self for her family, her community both local and far beyond.

Mason takes the unpleasant and disrespectful reactions of his family in regard to the podcast and his spiritual journey, as an opportunity to take stock of his own perception. Already labeled an apostate by the church, Sarah helps Mason unpack a lot in this episode around expectations, reactions, and reactions to expectations.

We shall reiterate...

We don't attack a church; we don't attack someone's character. We honestly and accurately point out the things that continue to happen in religion that hurts others.

It is also worth asking again.

Reptilian complex: The reptilian complex (also known as the "R-complex", "reptilian brain" or "lizard brain") was the name MacLean gave to the basal ganglia, structures derived from the floor of the forebrain during development. The term derives from the idea that comparative neuroanatomists once believed that the forebrains of reptiles and birds were dominated by these structures. MacLean proposed that the reptilian complex was responsible for species-typical instinctual behaviours involved in aggression, dominance, territoriality, and ritual displays.
