Mental Health in the Black Community - In this episode, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jasmine Lamitte, a licensed social worker in Los Angeles, California. Jasmine has an impressive professional background, having earned a BA in Psychology and African Studies from Pomona College, an MSW in Clinical Children & Families concentration from the University of Chicago, and being an LCSW since 2016.
She's also the author of The Black Mental Health Workbook, 2022, and has an Instagram account called @socialworksage. Jasmine shares her experience as a social worker in school settings, where she worked as the director of mental health for 24 schools and now as the director of mental health for a nonprofit organization that works with kids in foster care.
We dive into the struggles of children's mental health, particularly in the black community, and the overdiagnoses of psychotic disorders. She also explains how race can affect a child's mental health and talks about the history of mental health and the black community, along with the misinformation and faulty studies that have perpetuated it.
During the conversation, Jasmine discusses the common feelings that black students experience when growing up in LA, and she explains how mindfulness practices have significantly helped the children she works with. Sonya shares with us her journey from a young age, how an injury at 17 led her to pursue a career in nursing, and how she has maintained her own mental health while working in high-stress situations as a trauma nurse.
We also explore her passion for motorsports and her experience as a woman in a male-dominated sport. However, Sonya's life took a dramatic turn when she was diagnosed with Lyme disease after filming an auto TV show in May 2021. She lost her ability to form complete sentences and speak by September, becoming wheelchair and bed bound.
In this episode, Sonya shares her journey through intense rehab programs that consisted of weekly IV infusions, daily injections, and dietary restrictions while speaking about the impact of her recovery process on her mental health.
Furthermore, Sonya describes her experience in acting, having been on a few different TV shows. Alexander Denning is a former felon who has turned his entire life around and become a successful model, actor, and father. He sat down with us on this episode of Mindful Space to discuss his experience in prison, what he has learned, and how it became one of the biggest blessings of his life.
Alexander also shared with us how prison can severely impact one’s mental health and discusses an inmate’s access to mental health resources or treatment. We also asked the model and actor about his first day in prison as well as what a typical day there looks like.
He shares with us how he would cope with poor mental health in prison and meeting another inmate by communicating through the wall and how this person convinced and motivated him to turn his life around completely. He promised this inmate that he would meet with a modeling agency once he got out, which is exactly what Alexander did.
