Season 4 of the Educational Passages Podcast continues with our “Imagine This” series - Where the magic of miniboats come alive through the voices and visions of those who make it all possible.

Each episode will paint a vivid picture of discovery, connection, and curiosity — not just tracking the voyages, but exploring the challenges and unexpected outcomes behind them.

Now press play, close your eyes, and imagine this:

How far can a summer project carry the dreams of a new generation of ocean explorers? Sparked by hands-on learning with the Oregon Coast STEM Hub, high school students along the Oregon coast build an uncrewed sailboat—the Yaquina Neversink—and launch it into the Pacific. What follows is an extraordinary eight-month voyage across thousands of miles. This miniboat’s resilient journey forges global connections, breaks records, and brings students closer to science, community, and the power of the ocean itself. Guided by a name rooted in hope and heritage, this tiny vessel proves just how far small beginnings can truly travel.

Visit https://educationalpassages.org/boats/yaquinaneversink/ for more information about the boat and project - and what happened next!

How can one field trip spark a journey that soars far beyond the classroom? Inspired by the TMS Sea Challenger, a group of middle school students from Massachusetts build their own miniboat—DMS Anita—and send it to sea aboard the R/V Endeavor. What follows is a remarkable adventure spanning two ocean voyages, unexpected landings, global connections, and a bittersweet homecoming aboard the ship’s final cruise. Guided by a symbol of endurance and exploration, this story celebrates how one classroom’s dream grew into a global journey of ocean exploration and inspiration.

From the Cliffs of Moher to the classrooms of Galway, our trip to Ireland in March with Educational Passages highlights the magic of ocean education. This is the second part of a conversation with Juliet Fluty (click here to listen to part 1). It dives into all the details behind the visits we mentioned in our blog post: educationalpassages.org/miniboat-magic-in-ireland/.

The trip to Ireland unveiled profound connections that have been made through our miniboat program, and the impact is has had on communities involved. We explore the journeys of students, the warmth of local hospitality, and the importance of the ocean in education and our lives.

A chat with the Hampshire Regional Miniboat Crew (from Westhampton, MA), who share with us the fun they had while preparing their miniboat throughout the entire school year. Experience the camaraderie and dedication that transformed a large, enthusiastic group into a tightly-knit team, who is now planning for launch next year.

Join us as the crew talks about things like what it will be like to continue the project over the summer, what's involved in building a miniboat, the best angle to install the on deck camera, and what did they name their miniboat.

Listen in as our young scientists discuss their forward-facing work and vision.

In this episode, Cassie talks with Lisa Swanson from Morristown Beard School in New Jersey. Lisa is currently on sabbatical and using her time to give back to her students and to Educational Passages, starting with an adventure to Nantucket, Massachusetts in February. The reason for the trip is explained, as well as other plans for relaunches from North Carolina, Ireland, and even Portugal! We also talk about ocean literacy both in and out of the classroom and ideas for ways to connect more communities this year.

This is the first episode of the Educational Passages podcast called “What is Educational Passages?”.

In this episode, Cassie is joined by Thomas to talk about the Educational Passages program. Cassie discusses the program’s mission, and how it fosters important connections that help develop a further understanding of the ocean.

Here are just some of topics discussed in the show:

  • Cassie answers the question; “What is Educational Passages"? (https://educationalpassages.org/).
  • There was some talk about the process of getting started (https://educationalpassages.org/start/) and what students can learn from following the path of the miniboats, including the launching and relaunching of boats.
  • Cassie explains that along with the GPS, you can now add sensors to the boats that include temperature (water and air), and pitch sensors. An example of a miniboat currently at sea with these sensors is the Square Mile (https://educationalpassages.org/boats/squaremile/) miniboat.
  • Maker Buoy Shop (https://www.makerbuoy.com/) was mentioned when discussing the sensor packs that can be added to a miniboat.
  • Cassie talks about the mini boat West (https://educationalpassages.org/boats/west/) from Maine that had several relaunches.
  • Cassie mentions Rye Riptides (https://educationalpassages.org/boats/rye-riptides/) miniboat that recently landed in Norway.
  • Thomas talks about the Raven KASTER (https://educationalpassages.org/boats/raven-kaster/) miniboat, which was launched by his students in November 2018. The boat landed in Achill Island, Ireland and is currently on display at the visitor center there called the Achill Island Experience - Aquarium & Visitor (https://achillexperience.ie/).
  • Cassie and Thomas talk about the landing of three miniboats on the southcoast of the island of Newfoundland.
    • Teal Turtle (https://educationalpassages.org/boats/tealturtle/)
    • HK Pride (https://educationalpassages.org/boats/hkpride/)
    • BHS Roweboat (https://educationalpassages.org/boats/bhs_roweboat/)
