Nick Lawrence is a professional photographer, after years of editing at a surf magazine he decided to hone in on his true passion of portraits and was able to combine it with another great love - pick-up hoops. Nick has been working on a portrait essay of pick-up basketball games over the last 4-5 years that he will publish and exhibit in ‘Backyard at The Alex’ the recently renovated local watering hole in Alexandria, Sydney. The exhibition details are listed below.Nick connected initially with co-host Jacinta at one of their favourite ‘runs’, a regular pick-up hoops gathering held at the Central Coast, and more recently joined our Shooting The Breeze game during the FIBA Women's World Cup where some of our listeners and pod guests from far and wide connected, played and hung out afterwards at a pub lunch. Some of our community with their varying backgrounds from all over the world will feature in this photographic essay and also featured in an ABC sports piece (link below). Recently retired Opals Captain Jenna O’Hea was there throughout the FIBA Women’s Wolrd Cup, enjoying being part of a team again in her beloved basketball community but this time as part of the ESPN broadcast crew providing analysis and commentary at the tournament. Jenna gives us an insight into the exhausting scedule of the broadcast team, as well as the joy in commentating alongside a largely women’s crew including Neroli Meadows, Kelsey Griffin, regular pod guest Michele Timms and recent pod guest Jenni Screen. Beamed onto TV screens live from the Superdome she watched her Opal’s sisters win Bronze on home soil alongside a rapturous home crowd, “…I got to speak about the game I love and speak about the Opals who are all some of my nearest and dearest friends so it was just the perfect opportunity for me and I loved every single second of it.”Relishing in their hard fought battle to overcome adversity and witness this storytelling chapter she could not be prouder of her former team. Jenna shares that sweet perspective from her role as part of the commentary team and some key moments from the tournament.Fittingly as a true team player Jenna continues in her leadership role in advocating the importance of player mental well being. Recently acknowledged as the inspiration for the new WNBL’s ‘Cygnett Community Award’ as a result of her successful campaigning in last year’s Covid impacted season for a mental health round under the auspices of Lifeline as well as having completed a community role for the highly impactful organisation. It’s hard to believe it was barely a week ago now as we look back at the most highly attended FIBA Women’s World Cup with over 145,000 spectators over ten days of incredible hoops action. Joining us on this episode is ESPN freelancer, and Siren Sport & ABC emerging sports writer alumni Phina Newton.Phina was a roving mobile reporter for FIBA and on the baseline for our Aussie hosted World Cup. She was in and amongst the action with players from all attending nations and was also able to witness the return of a legend of Australian Basketball, Lauren ‘LJ’ Jackson. Josie Taoi, a Sydney hooper of Fijian descent is the founder of a grassroots program that’s paying it forward - Promote The GOAT “PTG”.Sharing her story of faith and personal conviction in founding PTG she tells us how using and promoting basketball to not only showcase the diversity, can also create teachable moments in her hoops community program to help kids become happier, healthier and more confident.Josie founded PTG in 2019 and has only recently began to include herself in their social media ‘hype’ campaigns alongside many of the young talented hoopers she coaches.
