So I have been very epileptic with my coming around the community these days.
And it's not because I want to. There have been son much happening recently with me, that I just could not keep up.
More so, I still haven't fixed my saxophone yet after it got involved in an accident late last year.

I haven't even played the saxophone in almost 6 months. I planned to pick up the bass guitar pending when I'm able to fix my sax or get another one but I haven't even done anything close.

So I decided to find some solace in tryong out singing again.
This time I decided to sing a song for a very dear person to me who was celebrating her birthday recently as a gift for her.

We've had quite some time together. I didn’t have much to give as a sunstantial gift to her so I decided to compose a song for her

I composed the song reflecting on what I considered as the best form of encouragement for her through whatever season she might be going through.

And she sure did love the song from start to finish.
I hope you love it too and it encourages you.

Here were the lyrics:

VERSE
Is life taking a toll on you?
Many things seem not to work
Promises may seem to fail
But God is got you anyway

Life might not be a bed of roses
But there's more than that, can't you see
Everything might seem to go wayward
But everything's gonna work out for your good

REFRAIN:

On this day,

I hope you see God working

On this day,

I hope you see this awakening

On this day,

I hope you rest on hope

On this day,

A hope that's always gold

Thanks once again to @ksam @starstrings01 and @obaro for this initiative.

It's cool doing music with great musicians on Hive

My life has always been a mush of different creative parts. From music to visual arts to photography and videography among others.

But recently, I have been more in the videography and cinematography space.
I have been shooting videos for clients, event videos, product videos and much more.

Shooting wildlife

But much more recently I have explored doing product ads more than any other type of visual work. These product ads have ranged from products sold to services rendered by people.
Asides building my portfolio, they have also helped me explain cinematography is a much more easy way, such that creating sets for shoots come easier to me.

In this video I show one of the ads I made for a perfume brand. It was a simple but yet engaging idea especially, when I came up with the final shot.

I had no initial idea for the shot. So I came up right on the spot with the idea on how the video could be constructed. I had an assistant with me, who was apparently the client. She helped with getting the shots right.

So how did we get the scintillating results you're watching?

First, you need to understand that there are 3 things to consider when shooting a product ad:

1. THE STORY: Every product conveys an idea of some value. With stories told through visuals, one should be able to tell it to the audience without losing them one bit. The story should portray the essence of the product as perfectly as possible.

With this perfume product, the scent carried this vibe of "the freshness of nature". And this was portrayed in the ad, especially where we show the product on a prop tree covered with mist

2. THE ENVIRONMENT: One can either create or modify the environment and visuals around what you want to shoot. What is visible however dictates to a large extent how the end result will look like.

This video was shot in a living room. A table was used for displaying the product and the products were underpaid with linoleum sheets.

The table was placed centrally in the room faraway from walls, so that the background can be blurred. We couldn't do anything magical to make a suitable background for the shoot that would beat blurring out the background by making the product standing out within a depth of field. That blurred out background was just very needed. It keeps attention on the product sustained.
And so we just made use of a prime lens to achieve that level of optical blurriness.

Also, we made use of a prop tree as earlier said.

The Environment

3. GEAR: Gear is obviously an important factor to consider, not necessarily because the best gear do the best jobs, but so that one can work within what one has.

The truth is that content is always king over gear. If you can capture people's attention with a smartphone-shot video, you might not need a cinema camera to sell out your idea.

However, the better the gear the more options you have.

I use a 2014 Panasonic Lumix GH4 for most professional work and that was what I used here. The camera in itself is very capable even in 2023, but it still has some shortcomings.

The Lumix GH4

The biggest shortcoming for me in shooting videos generally are the lack of In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), poor autoficus and a bad low-light performance. An averagely priced smartphone today has some form of stabilization. So to have a camera without one can really be a pain. However, I'd learned how to get stable shots with body movements and sometimes use the camera with a dolly tripod.

I pretty much shoot most of my product ads with manual focus, so that was not a problem here. Otherwise, the autofocus is very tricky with staying in focus consistently.

After all I was using a manual focus prime lens - a Meke 35mm f/1.7 lens. This cheap small lens is the sharpest lens I have in my camera set up and it always comes in handy for the crispy shots and beautiful blurry background it gives.

The Meke 35mm lens

Once I had these factors in place, the shooting of the video was majorly just cinematic moves to depict the story.

Shot 1: The Intro
This was simply achieved by telling my assistant to push the product from one side to the other.
Alternatively, one could put the camera on a tripod and do it if you're alone.

Shot 2: The Reveal
Here, the product is opened up and revealed.

Shot 3: Show off
The product is displayed using cinematic moves and the fine prints of the product are shown also.
Also note the intentionality with the music. At some point the visuals depict some vibration in sync with the music.

Shot 4: The Bridge
At this point the music comes to a calm. The product is displayed on the prop tree, covered in mist (depicting natural freshness).

Shot 5: The Wrap Up
The product is then sprayed and the musical vibe resumes fully, with the mist of the spray spreading all around (mist was added in post).
Then the product is displayed all opened up and the brand name is shown.

All through each of the shots, texts were also added with sound effects to carry the idea of each shot and make the ad more relatable for action.

EDITING:
All editing was done in PowerDirector for Mobile with little 3rd party ad-ons... perhaps I can do another video at a later time on PowerDirector as an editing software

Not everyone would have access to a pro-camera. In fact, many aspiring videographers only have their phone to start with.
But whichever situation you find yourself in there are take home points from how I shot this ad.

Take home points:

  • Always have a storyline, no matter how cliché. It informs how you shoot your videos and makes the process easy.
  • Use your gear to it's advantages
  • Improvise, improvise, improvise if you'revery constrained. When you have the capacity to create expensive sets, you can then do "REAL stuff" from A-Z.
  • A good depth of field more often than not looks good for product ads.

BONUS POINT

  • Post your works!. It's the only way you can ever get discovered. It's how I got the majority of my clients. They saw what I could do, and got me hired.

It's a long read, but I hope you got some good stuff from it.

This song had to be the highlight of jamming during the days of Windows XP 98 and early Windows Vista. It came as a free song on Windows PCs. As a young boy back then I'll play it over and over again. We had little access to songs unlike today when songs are easily found online and one could have loads of songs on your mobile phone.
We had to put on PCs to play digital songs on computer speakers😅.

The song was released in 2001 and the radio edit was adopted by Windows to showcase the new Windows Media Player back then.

The lyrics majored on trying to love humans from a non-human perspective, but yet they fail, only for one to accept them for what they are.

As we go into the new year 2023 and beyond, let us learn to love each other and have the best hopes for one another even in our weaknesses.

We all have one life to live and will only be remembered for who we were.

Enjoy my saxophone cover!

Happy New Year in advance!

Lyrics (Musixmatch)

For millions of years in millions of homes
A man loved a woman, a child then was born
It learned how to hurt and it learned how to cry
Like humans do
I'm breathing in, I'm breathing out
Oh-oh-oh-oh
So slip inside this funky house
Oh-oh-oh-oh
The dishes in the sink
The TV's in repair
Don't look at the floor
Don't go up the stairs
I'm aching and I'm shaking and I'm breaking
Like humans do
I'm aching, I'm shaking, I'm breaking
Like humans do
I work and I sleep and I dance and I'm dead
I'm eating, I'm laughing, I'm lovin' myself
I never watch TV except when I'm stoned
Like humans do
I'm breathing in, I'm breathing out
Oh-oh-oh-oh
So slip inside this funky house
Oh-oh-oh-oh
The dishes in the sink
The TV's in repair
Don't look at the floor
And don't go up the stairs
I'm aching, I'm shaking, I'm breaking
Like humans do
Ooh, I'm aching, I'm shaking, I'm breaking
Like humans do
Ooh
I'm breathing in, I'm breathing out
Oh-oh-oh-oh
So slip inside this funky house
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Wiggle while you work
Anybody can
The rain is pouring in
On a woman and a man
I'm aching, I'm shaking, I'm breaking
Like humans do
I'm breathing in
I'm breathing out
Oh-oh-oh-oh

Thanks for listening!

Some days back I shared lessons I learnt from the journey of building my first ever studio. It was an interesting ride and the lessons learned were very instrumental to building my next studio.

I spent about a year in this space, utilising the most of it towards the end of my stay there.

After I finished my 1 year internship as a medical houseofficer, I was faced with a dilemma of choices because I had to move locations.

  • One option would be moving back to my parents' house. This was easily a good option because I won't be paying for amenities.
  • Another option would be finding another location for a studio. But that would come with more responsibilities because I would have to pay for everything.

The problems with the first option are however numerous. Having built a studio and acquiring the equipment I now had, it would be a problem bringing in so much equipment into my parents' house.
More so, I had been out of home predominantly for over 5 years - creating a usable space was going to be difficult. My room had been converted into something else🤣.
Another big problem was that my parents' house is located far away from town where power supply is stable. It won't also be easy to take clients to such a far place.

As uneasy as the second choice felt, it was my best option, especially if I found one in the heart of the city.

Lucky me!
A friend of mine got me a good place right in the city centre. It was a 2 room self-contained apartment. It was a perfect choice, though small.

I basically selected one of the rooms as my studio space while the other would be my living area.

In this video, I describe the thought process behind setting up the studio and it blended into the final result of the studio I use today for all my creative works.

After cleaning the space, I had to ensure the painting of the room which a friend of mine helped me with. The initial paint on the walls were quite strong and we had to do 2 layers of painting.

Here was how the room looked like before painting.

Once I had the painting out of the way, I came up with a plan, and drawing from the lessons I learned from my former studio, I ensured I included these considerations in my new studio:

  • Sound treatment and sound proofing and Sound quality
  • Adequate and intentional lighting
  • Convenience features
  • Quiet air conditioning
  • Functionality features
  • Space management

I am still learning from this current studio I use and I'm sure there will be a lot of new lessons by the time I upgrade to perhaps a bigger studio.

The current space is quite small though we'll confined as compared to my former studio where the same room doubled as a studio and living area.

I hope you could a thing or 2 from what I have managed to build so far.

Do you think the improvisations turned out well in the general outlook of the studio space?

What could I have done differently?

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Thank you for watching/reading!

I work around gadgets and devices a lot.

More than just using them, it has become more of a hobby than a thing borne exclusively out of need.

Even in my current job as a clinical researcher, I have had to be placed in charge of technical parts of using medical devices for patients in my facility.

This has made me to explore beyond just my creative side but also sharing my experience with using devices.

I hope to be able to consistently share about my experience with using gadgets I'm able to lay my hands on as I find ways to get more creative.

Here I talk about a Headphone called OneOdio Pro 30, a budget Professional Headset with very interesting adaptability features.

It seems to have been made for DJs rather than full time studio engineers and audiophiles, but to my surprise it produces balanced sound well enough for professional studio.

The frequency distribution of this headsets are quite usable and well tuned enough to give decent listening pleasure and comfort.

See in this video the perks, pros and cons and know whether this could be suitable for your needs.

One Odio 30 Pro Specifications:

Speaker: 50mm

Impedance: 32 Ohms

Sensitivity: 110dB + 3dB

Frequency Response: 20HZ -20KHZ

Videography and visual story-telling are 2 things I would live tp be able to do on a professional level.

I have had a a fair share of experience hands-on with videography over time, though I'm still green and learning.

Whenever the opportunity presents itself, I latch on it and find ways to tell stories with what I have.

Last month, a friend of mine, @omoajok invited for a collaborative videoshoot with a make-up artist, Bid Beauty and a model.

We used More Miracles studio in Ibadan, Nigeria for the shoot.

I had a wedding shoot that same morning with @omoajok, which took quite some time to get done with so it took quite a while to arrive at the studio.

The make-up artist was already almost halfway done with her work, but I still managaed to get some shots.

Then I covered the work of @omoajok in styling the hair.

The video shows a sort of broll/cinematic rendering of the process of makeup in 5 minutes.

It highlights the various parts of the process and shows what creative skill from two beauty artists can do... and of course what a good videographer😉 can do to bring out the best from it!

I hope you enjoyed it!

Thanks to More Miracles for allowing us use his studio and lighting for this work!

"Working from home" is no longer a new terminology in the global space today.

Everywhere, both in developing and developed countries we have had to adapt to the changing tides in how we approach work.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic razed the world and shook our systems, a lot of things have had to change and that includes how we interact with one another and how we do our work.

People have had to stay indoors for days, weeks, months and work from there. They have had to interact with people from there and oddly enough engage in social activities from the "comfort" of their home desk or bed if you wish.

And this trend and style of work has sort of stuck with us even beyond the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We have sort of gotten accustomed to doing almost everything 'remotely'.

Every now and then, we would rather meet with people on zoom meetings or online video calls than step out of our houses.

We have built a NEW CONVENIENCE from COVID-19: THE REMOTE SOCIAL SPACE.

And this comes with a lot of changes than one might not be able to exhaust at once, but in this video, I touch one important one that affects our health.

And that's because I have had a fair share of experiences from this change and I have got some significant complaints from patients since after the COVID-19 heat.

It all has to do with Posture-related back and neck pains, from prolonged sitting hours on uncomfortable chairs that make us take up straining postures while at our desks or even while just relaxing.

Like I mentioned, a lot of things have gmhad to change about how we do things since COVID came... and that includes long hours of sitting in front of a screen.

A significant amount of people developed backpain as an aftermath of the Lockdown.

We weren't prepared for this change. People would have to sit for longer hours than usual on their already uncomfortable chairs or couches at home.

In fact, quite a number of people probably found out that the majority of furniture in their homes were just fancy-looking pieces that carried very litle essence of comfort in them.

I bet people would have had to buy new chairs, redesign their furniture and their home spaces just to get the needed comfort they desire... I had to.

I changed my studio chair twice within the year.

This article shows how COVID has made people adapt their homes to suit their comfort

In essence, COVID brought about new problems and questions on how we should live our lives.

In the video above, I explore the simple things you can do to ensure that you avoid straining positions that can cause back pain, neck pain or pains in the joints from poor sitting postures, and they include:

  • Getting the right chair for you
  • Learning correct sitting postures
  • Ensuring you engage your physical therapist or doctor when you have significant pain or discomfort from sitting.

I hope the points in this video might help.

Did you experience back pain or any strain from long-sitting hours during the lockdown?

What was your experience like?

This song was written exactly 20 years ago by Rof Løvland and first performed by Secret Garden the same year.

Since then it has been reperformed several times with multiple covers. The song was a minor hit when it came out but was made popular by the reperformances.

The song was so cliché that quite a number of listeners probably thought the song was a gospel song... And it's all about the lyrics really.

The lyrics reflect the the topic "help".

People have interpreted it to be various topics. Some say a love song, some say a gospel song, some a song about friendship.

But whatever you interprete it to be, it's a song of hope and help a song that speaks about looking out for each other.

And that's what we really need to have a better world for all

Here I played on the Josh Groban version, which plays to the side of being the gospel version. It's pretty much the same with the original song with slight differences in dynamics.

Enjoy!

Lyrics (AZLyrics)

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary

When troubles come and my heart burdened be

Then, I am still and wait here in the silence

Until You come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains

You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders

You raise me up to more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains

You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders

You raise me up to more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains

You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders

You raise me up to more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains

You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders

You raise me up to more than I can be.

You raise me up to more than I can be.

Hello Community. It's been a while here. Hope we're all doing well. Decided to do some little stuff on a film score today.

Film scoring is an interesting part of movie production nowadays that requires quite some effort with telling the stories conveyed rightly.

Beyond the complexities that the score might adapt, simply telling a good story with a score is a whole challenge itself. It might take some time to find a befitting theme or feel to it, but I bet it will always be an interesting venture.

I've listened to scores from big names like John Williams, Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Thomas Newman, Ludwig Göransson and a few others.

So far my most favorite film score composer is Hans Zimmer and I think I had mentioned it somewhere on a previous post.

I love all the others, but I love how Hans Zimmer embraces new ways of doing things. He keeps reinventing how he makes his music.

The Kung fu Panda score is just one of the many beautiful scores he has worked on.

The most sensational part of this score is the moment where Oogway Ascends.

There have been many renditions of this part piece... with the different versions having flutes, guitars, violins etc.

My most favorite rendition is the flute version originally performed by Pedro Eustache

When I heard this part piece, it felt so good and so soothing.

I felt like playing it on the Soprano sax because it was super expressive. But I only had my 8-year old alto sax to use.

And so I tried to convey as much as I could with the expressive sounds.

I hope to do more with film scores especially upbeat scores and expressive ones.

Perhaps when I'm able to afford a new professional saxophone I'll be able to spread my wings more and more.

I hope you enjoyed this one.

This here was my first attempt at something like a film score sometime back ago:

Thanks for reading!

"Redemption Song" is a song composed by Bob Marley. It was the last song performance on the Uprising album with the Wailers in 1980... And he performed the song while the band members simply resonated with his performance. Such beautiful performance.

It is the last recorded document of Bob Marley before he died on May 11, 1981.

He died of cancer after a protracted period dealing with the health condition.

The song was indeed evident of the fact that he probably knew that his time was already coming to an end.

So you would see a lot of relective words and words of admonition stemming from a personal experience of life and drawing from wise words.

He also makes reference to "the book", which some have said was the bible, while others attribute it to a religious standard. He talks about how we "kill our prophets" and attribute no care to the future and time, which will on the long run matter in our lives.

The song was more like a word to you from him and it dwelt a lot on the concept of freedom of the mind, stressing the fact that such freedom is in your hands.

This song is a mixture of emotions, bravery and a quest for truth... a song with deep reflective meaning, with such liberating lyrics.

There have been so many re-renditions and covers of the song over the years right from when it was released. In fact, Stevie Wonder performed the song just shortly after it was released. This shows how powerful and how much of a classic this song is, even till today.

Enjoy my saxophone one-man version of it.

Lyrics (AZLyrics)

Old pirates, yes, they rob I

Sold I to the merchant ships

Minutes after they took I

From the bottomless pit

But my hand was made strong

By the hand of the Almighty

We forward in this generation

Triumphantly

Won't you help to sing

These songs of freedom?

'Cause all I ever have

Redemption songs

Redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery

None but ourselves can free our minds

Have no fear for atomic energy

'Cause none of them can stop the time

How long shall they kill our prophets

While we stand aside and look? Ooh!

Some say it's just a part of it

We've got to fulfill the book

Won't you help to sing

These songs of freedom?

'Cause all I ever have

Redemption songs

Redemption songs

Redemption songs

[Guitar break]

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery

None but ourselves can free our mind

Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy

'Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time

How long shall they kill our prophets

While we stand aside and look?

Yes, some say it's just a part of it

We've got to fulfill the book

Won't you help to sing

These songs of freedom?

'Cause all I ever had

Redemption songs

All I ever had

Redemption songs

These songs of freedom

OhEhmGee is a known musician/comedian in the Nigerian and African entertainment space.

He was very much known for combining what is commonly referred to as "tungba" music and present in a gospel-comedic way. People fell in love with his style of entertainment almost immediately he hit social media with his creativity.

More recently he took his "tungba-styled" music to the live performance stage and built a band with which he performs regularly.

And no doubt, he doesn't disappoint with his heavy african groove.

And y'all probably know me by now that I love groove.

This performance here is one of my favorite renditions of his live performances. The performance explores old Yoruba Hymnals in a relatable danceable fashion.

I grew up listening to Yoruba Hymns, so it's quite easy for me to fall in love with music like this.

Hymns were an integral part of my youth in my church environment where I spent a significant part of my life as a young boy.

This performance is a re-rendition of OhEhmGee's performance of Yoruba Hymnals but this time with the dynamics of my saxophone taking the lead role.

I ensured to allow the vocals to remain, for those who understand Yoruba language to flow, but the groove and feel must definitely get you dancing or bobbing your head.

The heavy presence of the local drums (gangan) is the soul of african music and dance.

Enjoy my saxified jam!

Thanks for Listening!
