Heather Lisle is a messaging and marketing expert and host of the Money Making Marketing show… where she talks about all things marketing, branding, communication strategies, PR…and let’s be honest - we all need a little help with clarity and keeping our head out of the trashcan in business too. She brings over 20 years of executive and leadership level experience in the corporate, small business, nonprofit and government space to her clients. This podcast will give you the strategies you need to make the money you want to see with your marketing…how does that sound? Let's get to it!
Building a life you can’t wait to wake up for…well, it’s a hard concept for many of us to fully embrace. It’s like…we want it (we want it bad!), but we don’t know how to get it and have it. It can sometimes feel unobtainable, right?
I’ll raise my hand on that one!
In today’s episode, I’m talking with Erin Gerner, Founder of Powerhouse Lawyers (and the podcast too!), a community empowering women in law through community and connection.
If you’re a high achiever and have struggled with balance, you are not alone. Erin and I dive deep into what’s holding us back from living life to the fullest RIGHT NOW…
…and my friend, this is about boundary setting and communicating your needs to everyone around you. This episode is packed full of great life advice we all need.
Erin Gerner is a former practicing lawyer turned life coach for women in the law. Her objective is to help women combat overwhelm, align their careers with their values and priorities, and form community and connection with other law-minded women to scale their businesses and enrich their lives.
Erin has tried to live up to an impossible level of perfection and eventually realized she felt defeated, taken advantage of, unsupported, and expendable. After making the decision to walk away from the practice of law, she has spent the last ten years educating herself on the secret of success. She strives to help all women in the law achieve their goals and build a life they can't wait to wake up for.
She also hosts the life-changing Powerhouse Lawyers Retreat- an in-person event to connect with law-minded women.

The difference between corporate marketing and personal branding and how you do it effectively - meaning your ideal client is going to stop the scroll and actually read what you have to say - it’s from the content you post and the stories you tell.
In today’s episode, I talk with Kacy Maxwell - CMO at Provisions Group, based out of Nashville, TN. He’s worked with small to midsized businesses and big nationwide brands, both in B2B & B2C.

When it comes to how we show up online or in the face-to-face world, what we wear…it matters. Since 70-90% of communication is non-verbal, your clients and colleagues are making decisions about whether or not they will take your advice…listen to your recommendations…all the things…based on how you present yourself.
In today’s episode, I talk with wardrobe stylist, Elisa Ellis of Turnkey Style, and she gives so many great tips on what you can do to show up with confidence and authority as well as how you can get more done - including seal more deals - based on how you show up.
For close to a decade, Elisa has been transforming closets and the lives of her clients in the US and abroad. Whether you are a business owner, executive, in corporate, management, or an entrepreneur, Elisa believes that how you show up matters and she is passionate about sharing how to 'Up Your Style Game' so you are more productive, are memorable, confident, and attract more success.
Elisa also works with businesses to help them guide and educate their teams about the power of professional presence, how an authentic personal image is linked to their success, and gives tips on how to present themselves in ways that help them reach their highest potential.

I work with a lot of executives who work for big companies (and smaller ones too), and one thing that comes up often is not understanding how to build your personal brand if you get a paycheck from a company you don’t own.
It sounds daunting.
Questions you may have thought of might be, “What do I say so I don’t get in trouble?” or “What should I post on social media in the first place?
You’re not alone if you’ve ever felt this way.
But, here’s the thing. By NOT getting out there and establishing yourself as a thought leader and expert in your niche, you’re leaving money on the table…and a lot of it.
In today’s episode, I’m going to give you the top 5 tips so you know exactly what you need to do to establish your own personal brand…even if you work for someone else.

Networking can either be your jam or something you really try to avoid for a variety of reasons. If you’re like a lot of the clients I work with, you likely haven’t been taught HOW to strategically network.
Networking isn’t just showing up at an event without a plan. In fact, you can make a bigger bang for your buck and it won’t be as scary if you follow some simple networking “rules.”

When it comes to confidence in our conversations and how we communicate with others, there’s a way to effectively do this with kindness yet setting boundaries too. This also includes understanding how to infuse warmth (i.e., in your words and nonverbal signals) no matter if you’re negotiating a big business deal or daily conversations with your colleagues and clients.
In today’s episode, I am talking with Nancy Medoff, author of #1 best selling book, Unmute Yourself, and sales and leadership coach. Nancy shares her wisdom about how to be persuasive and approachable…and how (as women) positioning yourself in conversations like “one of the guys” NEVER works.
After close to three decades of walking the talk in corporate sales leadership, Nancy Medoff ditched her VP global sales job after being spoken over one too many times in meetings. She DID THE THING and followed her passion for empowering women to claim their seat at the table - then build a bigger table.
“The Confidence Catalyst”, Nancy is a global keynote speaker who is recognized as an authority on women and confidence and she won’t stop until women everywhere step into their strengths, debunk Imposter Syndrome, know their worth, and show up like they own the room.
Her best-selling communication playbook, Unmute Yourself and Speak Up to Stand Out was listed in Forbes before being published and debuted at #1 on Amazon - twice. Her top 25% podcast, Unmute Yourself – the Podcast is a call to action for women everywhere to speak up, step into who they are meant to be and thrive at work.

I’m working with a large accounting firm and was getting ready to present to a group of managing partners about a training series we are piloting.
One of the topics was about how to message yourself in the digital space as a professional services provider.
I was going over the slide deck with the marketing director from the organization, and she told me that I could probably take out the slide on identifying your ideal client. She said, “we only need to focus on how to write a social media post…no need to spend time on who our ideal client is.”
I pushed back gently and said this….
How I teach people to message their content is directly aligned with WHO it is they’re speaking to…and yes, this applies to social media as well.
If you’re not able to intimately understand the pain points your ideal client is grappling with…you certainly won’t be able to say the words that will emotionally connect you to that person (and for them to ultimately buy from you) .
I was talking with one of the company’s managing partners. He’s fairly savvy on social media, and we were talking about who his ideal client is. He said that his person is someone who works in the private equity venture capital space. This person sacrifices a lot…time away from family, time away from the things they love to do.
This managing partner has done a great job emotionally connecting with his ideal client because he talks about the sacrifice in his social media posts.
He had a post on LinkedIn a few months ago talking about how his mom would always call him during busy season and tell him “he was working too hard” or that “he needs to take a break.” It was a BEAUTIFUL tribute and post about his mom. This partner loves his work and talked to his mom about WHY he loves his work…and even though the sacrifice is tough a few months out of the year - the reward is he feels like he’s making a big impact in other people’s lives.
SACRIFICE. This was a key pain point for his ideal client.
In order to make meaningful connections in your marketing messaging, I want you to do the following:
When you tell that story, you start with an interesting fact (or hook) to capture the reader’s attention and then follow up with what happened, lesson learned and how you handled the problem.
For example, in the managing partner’s post about his mom, the first sentence would read something along the lines of, “Mom always called me at the worst time during
busy season.”

Have you ever worked with a client or colleague who absolutely cannot take feedback well?
You know the type….
You’re working on a project together and when you give recommendations or thoughts to help improve things…you either hear crickets or see a defensive posture from the other person.
It’s SO HARD to work with people who have a hard time receiving feedback, especially when the feedback is necessary to move things forward, sell the thing, seal a deal, etc.
When you find you’re working with tough personalities, my advice is to pause and identify the TYPE of communication style of your colleague or client. It’s highly likely there’s a gap in your communication styles.
(D)Dominant types are extroverted yet task-focused, results-oriented and to-the-point.
(i)Influencer types are extroverted yet people-focused, positive, energetic and to-the-point.
(S)Steady-Relator types are introverted yet people-focused, collaborative, indecisive at times and need time to make decisions.
(C)Conscientious types are introverted yet task-focused, non-emotional, data driven and need lots of information to make decisions.
Now that you know who you’re talking to…consider trying one of these two approaches….

Believe me, I’ve talked to MANY professional services providers over the years…accountants, lawyers, commercial mortgage brokers…you name it.
One thing that comes up over and over again is this:
I work in a highly regulated business…how do I market myself without getting in trouble?
There’s a few things you need to keep in mind when it comes to marketing yourself as a professional services provider…let’s break this down and make it easy.
✅Understand your industry’s regulations.
The first step in managing your marketing message is to understand the regulations that apply to your industry. This includes rules around advertising, marketing, and promoting your services.
Find someone who knows these rules inside and out and leverage their help so you stay out of trouble.
✅Drop the industry jargon & acronyms in your marketing and messaging.
C’mon now. Let’s be honest. Your clients likely don’t know the specific jargon and acronyms you use. Even if they have heard these words and terms…spelling things out and being clear with the language you use makes it EASIER for your client.
When you confuse your clients - guess what? You lose ‘em.
BONUS TIPS:
💫✨ Avoid making claims you can't support. It's important to avoid making claims you can't back up with evidence. Make sure that any claims you make about your service are supported by facts/data or other credible sources.
💫✨ Maintain records of your marketing materials. It's important to keep detailed records of all your marketing materials to show compliance with regulations if needed. In other words, this is the CYA bonus tip.

Have you ever had a closet edit?
If you would’ve asked me a few months ago…I wouldn’t have even known what a closet edit is until a new friend, Elisa Ellis with Turnkey Style, attended one of my Chicks in Charge lunch meetings…we became fast friends, and I hired her to help me with my closet.
I had clothes from my past life in public affairs…and frankly, these clothes hadn’t been worn for three years. I had a closet full of nice clothes that I never really wore…primarily because I’m terrible at putting outfits together.
Elisa spent FOUR HOURS in my closet, and I tried on every, single piece of clothing I own. We donated about 6 large trash sacks of clothing after it was all said and done.
It was fabulous having someone teach me how to assemble items. I learned so much, and she elevated my style exponentially.
Four hours together in a closet - you learn a LOT about someone!
We got to talking about the clients she’s helped and her mission to help women build their confidence by dressing the part.
That really resonated with me. She said, “If you’re the CEO of your business…you’ve got to show up as one.”
Truth, right?
I recently read the book CUES by Vanessa Van Edwards. In the book she had a chapter on attire. What you wear — or how you dress — sends nonverbal cues to other people. Our clothing shows:
✅ How much power you wield.
✅ How much influence you have.
✅ How smart you are.
✅ How much you earn.
Your choice of clothing can heavily influence the impression you give and is a powerful communication tool.
When it comes to communicating confidence and ability, what you wear plays an important role in creating positive first impressions. Whether you agree with the statement or not, clothes make the woman or man…or at least others’ perception of you, science shows.

If there’s one thing I’ve heard a LOT over my years working as a professional in the communications and marketing space, it’s this:
Of course you’re successful - you have “that” kind of personality.
I’m the INFLUENCER type on the DiSC profile…positive, energetic, extrovert, people-focused.
And truth be told…sure, it helps being an extrovert when you’re in communications. BUT…that doesn’t automatically mean people will listen to you much less buy from you because you have a good personality.
In fact, quite the contrary.
"A good personality may get your foot in the door, but if you don’t have the ability to identify the type of person you need to sell to or have the competence to back it up…you’re dead in the water, my friend."
I recently read the book, CUES by Vanessa Van Edwards. It’s probably one of the best books I’ve read in a few years.
Van Edwards talks about the formula for charismatic communication. It’s a combination of both warmth (friendliness) and competence (intelligence). You must have a mix of both and know when to dial in more warmth or competence, depending on your situation.
Make sure your energy matches the energy in the room. If you walk into a meeting with everyone talking about their weekend, sharing stories and smiling…dial up those warmth cues (smile, nod, lean in).
When it’s time for you to present, dial up the competence cues. Speak with confidence, stand straight and face/front the person you’re speaking to. Use your hands with palms up to signal openness. Take up physical presence if you’re standing in front of a group. Don’t stand behind a podium. Smile.
PRO TIP: If you can’t showcase your warmth, people won’t believe in your competence.

I’m gonna bet that if you’re anything like me, you’ve likely had a people-pleasing phase of your life…or are still in it…or recovering from it.
I call myself a recovering people-pleaser because…from time to time, I absolutely fall victim to making sure everyone around me is happy and thriving, despite my own well-being.
Have you ever felt this way?
When I find that my energy is drained and positivity is waning, that’s my signal to step up and reset those boundaries.
Self awareness is key, right?
“Self-awareness is probably the most important thing towards being a champion.” – Billie Jean King
If you’re an INFLUENCER (i) or STEADY-RELATOR (S) type of communicator (or you have colleagues on your team who are these types) on the DiSC profile, you likely can fall into the people-pleasing arena from time to time.
The INFLUENCER type is people-focused, extrovert, energetic and positive communicator. The STEADY-RELATOR type is people-focused, introvert, calm, collaborative, peaceful communicator.
Both of these types are people-focused and want everyone on the team to be happy, having a good time and working well together…and sometimes can do this to the detriment of themselves, especially if they’re working with different types.
Be aware of the more dominant, task-focused and non-emotional types in the room…because these types can either take over or tune out of the conversation in a New York minute.
So, what do you do if this happens to you?
If you’re communicating with the DOMINANT (extrovert, task-focused, results oriented, demanding) or CONSCIENTIOUS (introvert, task-focused, analytical, non-emotion) types, you’ll want to dial up competence with these types in your non-verbal communication.
Be assertive with your physical presence. Sit up straight, shoulders back and face or front the person (don’t face away from them). Use a louder tone of voice. Use words, such as: brainstorm, effective, expert in your written or verbal communication.

Have you ever been in a meeting with someone who was loud-mouthed, obnoxious and completely unaware of any and all non-verbal signals coming from absolutely everyone in the room?
You sit there…almost feeling embarrassed for that person…but, yet, you don’t say anything because you can’t get a word in edgewise?
I’m gonna bet this has happened to you at some point in time.
It happened to me a week or so ago. I was in a meeting with volunteers at the state capitol advocating for increasing access to mental health resources for children.
One of the guys in my group - a litigation attorney - could not read the signals from the other members in our group.
He was dominant, demanding, obnoxious, intolerant…
…and we were lobbying legislators (both Republican and Democrat) to vote in favor of the bills we were discussing with them.
After the first 10 minutes in the first meeting, I knew our meetings were not going to go well.
Why?
This guy had ZERO self-awareness of how he came across in our conversation.
The legislators and staff in the room were sitting back in their chairs physically positioning themselves away from him. They were positioning laptops and journals across their chest to block themselves from him.
After our meeting, we walked into the hallway and he said, “Well…that went well!”
I can be very direct (depending on the situation) and said, “Really? You thought so? Because no one could get a word in besides you. You need to soften your tone and let others speak.”
What do you do in a situation like this?
Do you…
Try to break the streak and interrupt?
Sit quietly and let them dig their own hole?
Keep smiling…and maybe (just maybe) they’ll take the cue and shut up?
This type of situation could be a real bear, depending on your personality and communication style…
…which is why having an understanding and awareness of your communication style is critical, especially if you’re an executive or business owner who is responsible for selling ideas (or business).
If you’re the DOMINANT (extrovert, task-focused, results oriented, intense) or INFLUENCER (extrovert, positive, energetic) type, be aware of your dominance and energy and let others in the room have an opportunity to speak up and participate. In other words, be sure to shut up and listen on occasion.
Soften your tone and use non-verbal cues such as head nods, smile and lean in to show interest and respect. Prompt questions with others in the group so every voice is heard.
If you’re the STEADY-RELATOR (introvert, people-focused, calm, steady) or CONSCIENTIOUS (introvert, task-focused, non-emotional, analytical) type, you’ll need to come prepared to the meeting with your talking points and ready to discuss when prompted…or better yet - get out of your comfort zone and take the initiative to speak up.
Sit up in your seat - shoulders back - to signal non-verbal cues of confidence. Gaze with purpose to whomever is facilitating the meeting. This signals your interest and willingness to participate.

If you classify yourself as an introvert, you'll want to listen in this episode!
Today I will be talking all about communication strategies, and more specifically the verbal and non verbal cues to effectively identify and communicate with your peers.
The DiSC assessment is incredibly valuable for this as S & C types are more introverted, and those in the D & I are more extroverts. Most of the time you are communicating with others unlike you, so how do you identify what type of communicator someone is?
Introverts on the DiSC:
S (Steady)- calm, steady, laid back, emotional and will smile, giving more non verbal cues
C (Conscientious)- analytical, precise, formal, logical, not much emotion, little non verbal cues
Listen in to see how you can clearly identify how others communicate, and how you can use your strengths to communicate effectively as an introvert!

If I could give a dollar for every time someone has said that LinkedIn is only for job seekers, I’d be a rich woman…AND all those “someone’s” are wrong.
LinkedIn is for job seekers…AND it’s for professionals who truly are looking to connect with other professionals who can help them in their business.
LinkedIn is a social media platform, and even though it’s intended for professional purposes, you should use it in a way that has potential clients interested in learning more about you.
Because one thing is 100% true: people buy from people…and they buy from people they know, like and trust.
When you share stories - not just the “corporate-y” posts…those stories connect people.
How do you know what stories to share?
Think about a client you’d love to work with. What would they want to know about you that would set you apart from your competition? What stories can you share that shine a light on your unique qualities?
Before posting content on any social media platform, consider WHO will be consuming that content and WHAT do they need to hear from you?

How many of you detest sales people? You know, the types that just want to “sell you” on something without first finding out if the thing they’re selling is actually something you need or want… UGH.
I used to hate car shopping because I always felt like the salesman was too…well…salesy. It felt gross. Have you ever felt this way?
We cannot use the same selling style for every customer and be successful every time. It doesn’t work this way.
We all communicate and receive communication differently, whether that’s managing your team (or clients) at the office or as a business owner marketing your business.
The key is this:
In order to get buy-in from your team or sell to a customer, you MUST build trust and rapport…and do it sooner rather than later.
So, how do you do it?
You’ve got to understand the type of person you’re communicating with or messaging to and SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE.
In other words, you’ve got to learn what stresses and motivates them so you can meaningfully connect with them.
When you learn to do this, that’s when your team or clients feel connected to you in a genuine and authentic way.
I teach my clients how to do this by using the DiSC profile. The DiSC is an easy 4-prong approach to help you understand how to communicate effectively with various types so you have a winning conversation.
Here’s the breakdown….
DOMINANT TYPE:
These people are RESULTS-ORIENTED and they move quickly. Be sure to keep the small talk minimal because they’re not interested. Stick to the task at hand and keep out the emotions.
INFLUENCER TYPE:
These people are POSITIVE and don’t like to be bogged down with details. The more fun and energy you can incorporate into the conversation, the better.
STEADY-RELATOR TYPE:
These people are LAID-BACK and INDECISIVE. You’ve got to draw out their thoughts and opinions and make sure to clearly define all areas of your product or service. Don’t pressure them to make decisions quickly…they won’t do it.
CONSCIENTIOUS TYPE:
These people are only interested in DATA and FACTS. They examine things very closely, will have questions for clarification and want lots of details. Keep the personal/family talk out of the conversation, and be sure to give them plenty of time to make a decision.

Raise of hands: do you get easily distracted?
You have intentions set on getting that list checked off…and then, the car doesn’t start or a kid gets sick…or the pipes burst…or you lost track of time scrolling on social media.
This past week, I had the kids at home because school hadn’t started back yet from the holiday break. And let’s be honest…no matter how old your kids are (mine are 15, 13 and 10) - they get “bored” easily and getting work done is a pipe dream. We drove back from Florida. I had multiple clients calls the day after driving 13 hours (that in and of itself was a BEATING) and a training gig the following day.
I remember telling my business best friend this past Friday afternoon (@keeley…love you, friend), “I had NO time to work IN my business…I worked for clients, which is fantastic (I’m not complaining at all) AND as a solo business owner (and this goes for you too, whether you're an exec or business owner) - I MUST allocate time each week developing new business. Period.”
So, let this be your permission slip to book that hour each week.
I know you’re busy…and we want to keep work in the pipeline too.
Here’s how I plan to spend my one hour of business development each week….
Why handwritten? We rarely receive anything handwritten anymore. Take the extra time. Write the note and stick it in the mail. Let that person know you were thinking about them and are wishing them well in the new year.
I was on the phone with a new friend (introduced to me by another business friend) the other day who kinda works in the same space as me. Come to find out - he’s wanting to phase out of executive coaching (and I want to do more of that) and was interested in talking with me further about opportunities together.

Personal branding and executive presence are terms that have been thrown around together and separately over the past few years. Are these terms mutually exclusive or do they work together and build upon each other?
I think they work together…you’ve got to have both in order to stand out amongst your competitors…and there’s a system you can leverage to do this with ease and impact.
One thing you need to know is that you are your brand, whether you work for a company or own your own business. Your subject matter expertise is an asset. In order to capitalize on your expertise, you’ve got to show the world what you know.
Get visible. Gain influence. This is how you develop executive presence.
What’s the difference between a personal brand and executive presence?
Your personal brand is how you market yourself — internally within your organization, or externally to clients. When you have established a strong personal brand, you are able to clearly communicate what’s important to you and what sets you apart.
Executive presence is what makes you a leader that others want to follow. It’s a culmination of character and behaviors that demonstrate your commitment to what’s important to you…and to the development and success of others.

We are diving into Part 3 of this 4-part series titled “How to be profitable moving into the new year, even with a recession looming.” And this week, we are focusing on all the things you need to review when it comes to your social media platforms.
If you’re like so many of my clients, you’re checking the box when it comes to social media…especially if you’re paying someone else to do it for you. But, the fact of the matter is if you’re posting just to post and not paying attention to the quality of the content or if the graphics look good (and people can read them well), you’re throwing money away…and no one has time for that.
This episode is short, sweet and to the point…and full of valuable information to help you take a quick audit of your social media so you can make tweaks that will benefit your bottom line.
As with anything in your business, I want you to think about your WHY. Why do you post on social media? Is it because you want to sell a product? Do you want to use social media as more of a “digital business card?” This means that when people meet you and look you up on social media - you have interesting and compelling content and anyone can see that you’re a legit business.
Once you’re clear on your why, then take a look at the top 5 items you need to review.
**It’s important to know that just because your followers and friends may not comment or give you a “like” does NOT mean they don’t love your content. So many people are “silent” on social media…they see what you’re posting but never comment.
I have a client who received every email I sent out for TWO YEARS and followed me on social media…never commented…and then boom…. One day, he called me up and asked me to take on a high-ticket project.
CONSISTENCY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME when it comes to social media.
Facebook (this goes for groups too): Take a look at your engagement and views on videos.
CLEAN OUT YOUR FOLLOWERS: Yep, that’s right. Take a look at who is following you and if they’re not people or businesses that align to your vision, you need to delete them. Quality over quantity…ALWAYS.
UPDATE YOUR BIO: Update your bio to reflect new skills, credentials and certifications. It’s also a good time on LinkedIn to ask clients to write a recommendation for you. (Side note…take that recommendation and develop a post about it!)
LINK IN BIO: Freshen up your link in bio as well as your Facebook and LinkedIn banners. Make sure your link in bio (this is the hyperlink on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn) directs people to an actual LIVE LINK. This can be your website, LinkTree or whatever link you want to send someone in your network.

I’ve always been a results-oriented person, and having my own business has elevated this to a whole new level. I want to share with you HOW I go about determining goals I want to reach…
…because if you don’t have goals - both financial and marketing - you don’t have a business, you have a hobby.
Step #1: Review what worked and didn’t this past year.
Step #2: Imagine your future.
Step #3: Be SMART about your goals…and only set 1-3 goals (otherwise you’ll get overwhelmed and won’t see things through)

For those of you who know me well, you KNOW I’m the ultimate planner.
I check my social media analytics and email marketing stats regularly. I am diligent about my monthly balance sheet. I even create spreadsheets for our vacations (maybe that’s gone tooooo far for some of you though!! 🤣)..
I have learned to implement regular reviews so I can pivot and make changes quickly so I don’t waste time and money.
Much like you, I have a team who I pay to help support my business. If I’m not staying on top of my numbers, I’m literally throwing money away.

…and no one has time for that! 🤑
Listed below are 4 things I take a deeper dive to review as we near year-end.
1️⃣ Review your numbers.
Review the following items:
2️⃣ Check out your competitors.
What are they talking about and sharing online? Are there posts that have performed well? How could you take those concepts and make them your own?
This isn’t a compare and despair exercise…but I DO want you to know what your competition is doing so you know how to best position your message.
3️⃣ Do you enjoy your clients?
This is a BIG one. If your clients are causing you heartburn, you may need to revisit who you’re trying to serve.
4️⃣ Marketing Results: What was your number one marketing objective for 2022? Did you achieve it? If not, why?

If you’ve ever worked with a client who didn’t express much emotion and is extremely analytical, you’ve likely worked with a C type on the DiSC. This is the Conscientious type.
Their biggest fear is making a mistake. They love having lots of information to consume and keeping to themselves.
Communicating and selling to this personality type can be simple if you focus on these key concepts:
Today’s guest is the Founder of Lady Changemakers, Jessica Bargenquast. Jessica and I talk about the strengths and weaknesses of the C type and how her personality has helped her build a business. If your perfect client is a C type, you’ll want to tune in and learn how to market and sell to this personality. This conversation will change how you message and market your business.
To connect with Jessica, follow her business on Instagram @Ladychangemakers or on Facebook Lady Change Makers.
If you’ve worked with a client who was super sociable, talkative, enthusiastic…and overall - an open, fun person…you’re working with the i type personality on the DiSC. The i is the Influencer type.
Their biggest fear is being taken advantage of or someone losing respect for them. They love being the life of the party and bringing a positive energy to everyone around them.
Communicating and selling to this personality type can be simple if you focus on these key concepts:
Today’s guest is Christian Scott with Keller Williams, and our conversation will light up your day! If you sell or work with the i types, you’ve got to tune in to this chat. We talk about what fuels the i type…what we are repelled by…and how you can best message and position your brand to this personality type.
To connect with Christian, you can find him on Facebook @pastor.christian.scott.
If you’ve had a client who has a warmth about them…but maybe somewhat introverted yet people-focused, you’re working with a S type personality. The S on the DiSC is the Steady-Relator.
Their biggest fear is change…and they love collaborating and being a listening ear to dear friends and colleagues.
Communicating and selling to this personality type can be simple if you focus on these key items:
Today’s guest is Katie Gibbons, one of my dearest friends and a Financial Wellness Coach. She and I are going to talk about the stressors and motivators of the S type, how to market and sell to the S type, and what she feels are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of the S. This conversation is packed full of great information to help you better understand and market your business to one of the largest personality groups you can sell to…the S!
To connect with Katie, you can find her on Instagram @katiegibbons.co
If you’ve ever had a client or colleague who seemed a bit intimidating…maybe even a little tough at times…they’re likely a D on the DiSC profile. They’re what we call a dominant type. These people want to WIN more than anything.
Communicating and selling to this personality type can be simple if you focus on a few key items:
Today’s guest is Keeley Hubbard (my favorite D!), and we are getting down to business talking about how you can best message and market your business to the D type.
To connect with Keeley, you can find her both on LinkedIn and Instagram:

One of the hardest parts of running a business is marketing yourself to the people who you really want to work with…because it’s not just anyone, right?
Today, we are going to cover my top 10 secrets to help you market your business and sell to any type of personality. But, before we dive into the top 10 list, I want you to really think about the type of person you enjoy working with the most.
Who have you worked with in the past that made work fun? Who was enjoyable to be around? What was their name? What about them did you really like?
I want you to name that person and remember as many details as you can about them as we go through this list.
I approach typing my clients with the DiSC profile. The DiSC is a personality assessment tool that has 4 main components: D - Dominant, i - Influencer, S - Steady-relator, C - Conscientious. Let’s dive in!

If you’re like so many clients I’ve talked to over the years, you may think email marketing is as dead as the dinosaur age…
…and I’m here to tell you that is flawed thinking.
You don’t own your social media platforms (Facebook & Google do…and they can shut down your account whenever they want), but you DO own your email list.
Today, we are going to cover the 3 basic components you need to have in place to get in front and stay in front of your clients.
Email Signature: Just like your social media platforms have a section for your bio, use that bio for your email signature. This is where you include your name, a little about you and how people can find you (i.e., link to your website or opt-in for a "freebie"). If you’re a business owner, you need to communicate with people online who you are, what you do and how you’re an expert in your niche.
Email Marketing: Building an email list ensures your message gets in front of those people who want to hear from you regardless if there's an outage on Instagram. There are TWO steps you can take to get started with email marketing. (1) Pick an email marketing platform (ex. MailChimp) & (2) Email your list weekly with valuable content.
Lead Magnet: Capturing customer email addresses can be challenging. People are very private with their emails. So, in order to capture those emails - you’ve got to have something REALLY awesome as a token for their email address…and we call this a lead magnet.
A lead magnet is a free item or service given away in return for someone's email address.
Think about your favorite retailer. You likely gave your email address in return for 30% off one item...that is a lead magnet. But, here's the catch to lead magnets: your lead magnet has got to be juicy enough (a FABULOUS deal or something really awesome for FREE) for someone to want to give you their email address.

When it comes to keeping things simple and easy to implement, my friend Tyler Riddell is a professional who has worked with many start-ups helping them to develop their digital footprint with ease and a quick pace too. He sees organizations as ecosystems. The only way an ecosystem thrives is if each organism works together to survive…and that’s exactly what he does and how he services his clients.
We are going to be talking about what business owners must have in place when it comes to their social media, email marketing and overall digital presence and more…because we all want to make money with our marketing efforts, right?
This episode is packed full of actionable items you can do starting today to grow your business.
Let me first say that before you get overwhelmed with some of the material I’m going to cover, please repeat: BRIEF IS BEST. SIMPLE IS GOOD. We are going to cover FOUR concepts:
What to Post Online: When thinking about what to post online, you'll want to consider content pillars. A content pillar is simply the areas of focus - those topics that your business covers in-depth. Think about these 2 questions when determining your content pillars: (1) Who is your audience and what do they want to hear from you? (2) How does your business help your audience?
How to Post Online: The key to being successful in the online space is that you must be CONSISTENT. All posts should include these 3 components: (1) catchy hook (2) caption (3) call to action. The key to a successful posting strategy is VARIETY.
Social Media Bio: All social media platforms have a section for your bio. This is where you include your name, a little about you and how people can find you (i.e., link to your website or opt-in for a "freebie").
Many business owners use the bio section to describe themselves in clever and "cutesy" ways. Don’t do this.
If you’re a business owner, you need to communicate with people online who you are, what you do and how you’re an expert in your niche.
I’m sure some of you have heard marketing gurus online talk about why it’s important to understand who your perfect client is. In the beginning of launching my business, I watched a few videos about it and thought, “What I do - anyone could be a client.”
Why bother spending time nailing this down?
First of all, not everyone is YOUR perfect client. You have personality characteristics that likely attract certain people and repel others, right?
There are 3 things to know when it comes to identifying and defining your perfect client:
DiSC is an acronym that stands for the four main personality profiles described in the DiSC model: (D)ominance, (i)nfluence, (S)teadiness and (C)onscientiousness.
People with D personalities tend to be confident and place an emphasis on accomplishing bottom-line results.
People with i personalities tend to be more open and place an emphasis on relationships and influencing or persuading others.
People with S personalities tend to be dependable and place the emphasis on cooperation and sincerity.
People with C personalities tend to place the emphasis on quality, accuracy, expertise, and competency.

Three tips to help communicate your unique brand position.
Let’s cut to the chase.
You’ve spent thousands of $$ on a logo, color palette and brand guide…
...and it’s BEAUTIFUL!!!
But...and this is a BIG but…
...the pretty logo isn’t bringing in the clients, right?
There’s a reason for that, and this may rub you the wrong way...but, it needs to be said.
No one cares about your logo as much as you do.
They just don’t. I know that cuts to the core a bit...it did for me too after I spent $5k on a brand package and it didn’t do anything for new business.
What does bring in new business?
Getting clear on your message.
Here’s 3 tips to help you draft your unique brand position so you stand out from everyone else out there in your niche….
My “I help” statement goes something like this…. “I help brands [this is the “who I serve” part] scale with executive-level communication and marketing strategy [this is “what I do” part] by creating unique brand positioning [this is the “how I do it” part].”

Stop wasting time and lots of money by not doing a mid-year review to see what’s working and not working in your business from a marketing perspective.
You likely tried some new things in your business this year...some worked, some didn't...some...well, you're not sure yet.
You win some - you lose some, right?
However, you'll lose cash and clients if you don't review and consider a few things moving into the new year.
1️⃣ Take a look at data analytics on your social media platforms. You'll want to see which posts performed well and which ones didn't. This will help you plan your posts for the new year.
Do the same thing with your email marketing too.
2️⃣ Take a look at what your competitors are doing online. Are they doing anything that seems to be landing with their community? Do you see people commenting and engaging with their content?
3️⃣ Have an understanding of the trends in your industry heading into the new year. It's always a good idea to be up-to-date so you're ahead of the game.
4️⃣ Think about your marketing objective. What is the ONE result you would like to see different in your business?
This is timely, I know…. But, let me tell you something - taking a break is exactly what you need when you’ve been going and going and not taking a minute to recharge.
I’ll admit that I love a weekend getaway. It doesn’t take much to make me happy. I’m not the kind of person who requires two-week long European vacations. Nope, a night or two away does my spirit so much good.
My dad always talked about working hard and playing hard. Even during the ‘80’s oil bust and we didn’t have much money at all, my dad ALWAYS made sure we took our summer vacation to New Mexico. I KNOW he made a financial sacrifice for our family, but looking back now...we needed it.
I said NEEDED it...not just wanted it. But, our family had a deep need to reconnect once a year. Life (and my parents’ business) was hard, and my dad knew that spending a few days away from the hustle and bustle of it all would help reset our minds and renew our spirit.
He was right. It’s funny that all those things he did for our family as I was growing up...he knew waaaay more than I did...and still does.
So, a few times a year (if not more), I make sure we take a few days to unplug because it truly is necessary in order to grow.
This takes some planning though. You know as well as I do that the weeks fly by, and if you don’t get intentional with your calendar - it’ll own you. The meetings, the presentations…it’ll all own you.
So, flip the switch. Take a break. Get out your calendar and find some time to unwind. Take the kids to grandma’s house. If you can’t go somewhere because money is tight, stay home and find something fun to do or just relax.
I realize we are just starting to get out from under a pandemic and economic shutdown, but now more than ever we need a break.
I promise you - the creativity and renewed sense of spirit will work wonders for you personally and professionally.
No matter what type of business you own, building community is critical to your success. If you’re a professional services provider and have participated in traditional face-to-face encounters (i.e., Chamber events, coffee meeting, networking at the country club, etc) but struggled developing a community in the digital space during the pandemic, you’ll learn so much from my guest, Dana Malstaff, CEO & Founder of Boss Mom.
Staying in front of and keeping your audience and potential clients engaged in the digital space is critical for growth. Sure, we are all getting back to normal and having those in-person meetings again (thank goodness!), but one thing is true: the world is leveraging digital assets now more than ever. One of those digital tools that Dana has mastered is developing community online.
Dana Malstaff is the author of Boss Mom: The Ultimate Guide to Raising a Business & Nurturing Your Family Like a Pro. When it comes to on-camera or on-stage interviews and appearances, it can be downright scary for a lot of us. The thought of pressing the “record” button was terrifying for me a few years ago!
Why?
Even though I am competent and an expert in my field, I lacked the confidence when it came to getting on-camera. If you’ve ever felt this way, you are absolutely not alone.
We are chatting today with my dear friend and international communications and media presence coach, Elizabeth de Moraes. She will share with us the techniques she uses with her clients to develop their own style of magnetic executive presence, confidence, polish and message delivery that creates more credibility especially during on-camera and public appearances.

There is no magic pixie dust that will bring you qualified client prospects without any work on your end.
If you want more clients, you’ve got to get out there and be visible to them…
…and that takes consistency and intentionality every day of the week.
There are two platforms to generate leads: in-person and digitally.
IN-PERSON
DIGITAL
Always keep in mind the words you use to describe who you are and how you can help need to resonate with your perfect client in a way that emotionally connects them to you. Think about the personality characteristics of your client…what are they feeling and how can you best communicate in such a way that leaves them wanting to learn more about you.

I just came back from a big conference in Miami and had the opportunity to talk with several retail start-up businesses. One in particular had such an interesting story. The owner…an incredibly sharp, super talented woman who has made millions in the pharmaceutical industry invested over $500,000 starting a company geared towards pre-teen girls.
She had a product developed…had spent tens of thousands of dollars on influencers to help promote the product…more thousands of dollars on consultants and marketing firms to help launch the product as well.
When I asked if she had a great TikTok presence, she showed me her page with one post on it. And the caption on the post was obviously written by a 40 year old woman.
What’s the problem here?
Two big things:
You MUST know who you’re talking to in order to get the response you’re looking for.

How many times have you assumed something without asking for facts or clarity? I’ll raise my hand on this one. I’ve assumed that people think my work is boring and like everyone else…and it’s not. I’ve assumed clients have felt a certain way about a project…and in fact - they felt very differently. I’ve assumed that someone understands certain terminology and they don’t.
We have all made assumptions about various aspects of our business. We assume that no one is seeing our posts on social media. We assume that people aren’t reading our emails. We assume that we need to spend money on things - like paid ads or SEO - when we aren’t making the money that we want to make.
In this episode, I cover my 3 biggest checkpoints I look at daily to make sure I stay away from the assumptions, and go directly toward what can grow my business and make more money - which can help you too!

Starting from the beginning is always the best place to start. I have found that in my past professional life and with my clients - when it comes to marketing your business, you want to get the website done and a logo package created and sign up with the luxury magazine to show you’re legit ASAP. I did that. I’ll raise my hand there. I’ve had clients who do that too because they felt they needed to show to the world that they mean business with a $10k website, $5k logo design, and $20k ad package. The problem with all of this is that if you’re not super clear on your messaging and specifically WHO you’re messaging to…ya’ll, you’re wasting a crapload of money and time…and you’ll wind up feeling frustrated, overwhelmed and broke quickly.
I’ve already revised my website - like major overhauls - 3 times in a little over 2 years.
Two things you need to consider BEFORE you start working on marketing materials:

Spending 23+ years in a corporate setting and transitioning to entrepreneurship wasn’t easy. It wasn’t just the scheduling changes that took place. I came from an environment where I had my calendar booked every 30 minutes, sometimes every 15 minutes with a different meeting…to in charge of my own schedule. But, it was for me - much harder to be by myself working and alone every day with no one to collaborate with much less talk to and bounce ideas.
Finding my people online was HUGE for me to have any success in business…and it’s still hard, but I’ve got my people to share my good and bad days with and they understand because they’re in the same boat.
If you’re looking for external validation from a partner or spouse who isn’t an entrepreneur - you’ll be disappointed all the time.
My advice: find your people who can be a good support system and learn how to be your own cheerleader. I do that by writing down the days I have AWESOME things happen and will make myself go back and read those great things on the days that I have a crappy day.

Have you ever taken the Meyers Briggs test? Or the Enneagram? How about the Colors test…or for me, I remember the first time I took the DiSC assessment, I was a Regional Vice President of Resource Development for the American Lung Association. I was at a leadership conference and we spent a half day with a facilitator learning about our behavior styles…and I found it fascinating. It helped me to be able to communicate with my team better and make better decisions with the volunteers and donors I worked with as well.
Fast forward to about 7 years ago, I took the DiSC again when I became Chief of Public Affairs for an elected official. On our leadership team (there were only 7 of us), one of the guys was soooo hard for me to work with, and I struggled. When he took the DiSC and I learned about his style…it was a game changer for our relationship.
About 2 years ago, I became a DiSC facilitator…I believe in this tool so much that I use it with my clients to be able to help them understand how they will best communicate with their perfect clients.
Allow me to help you find your path to communicate better and clearer. Check out my IG @heather_lisle or on my website www.heatherlisle.com to get more information.

Why a podcast? Why me? Why now? You’ve likely had times in life where you felt called or compelled or whatever that pull in your gut is to do something. I have had that pull for YEARS.
Why another marketing podcast? Well, because my style of marketing and messaging is different than everyone else out there. I dig into the messaging FIRST before we even start talking about marketing. Why? Because your marketing will suck money and life out of you if you’re not clear on who you’re talking to and what you do different over anyone else.
Why me? Good question. I think it’s a God thing. I’ve always been a performer and super comfortable on stage. I’m a communications major from college too…interviewing and talking has always been easy for me.
**Why now? Another good question. I’ve been talking about having a podcast for a few years. I finally got sick of me telling myself, “Why have you not done this yet?” So, there’s that. I’m ready now. Let’s go.
Let's start the conversation. Feel free to follow me on IG @heather_lisle & DM me to let me know your thoughts!
