Nottingham has a huge number of manmade caves. Many have been destroyed and some still grace the city whilst others are waiting to be discovered. This episode explores some of the tales of subterranean Nottingham, both factual and fictional.

Henry grew-up in St Ann’s, Nottingham, in the 1960s. At the time St Ann’s was an overcrowded area with poorly maintained and cramped council housing. The decision was made to rehouse the residents in new estates like Bilborough, demolish St Ann’s and rebuild. For Henry, this exodus to a new, unexplored land represented a stark change, and this episode explores his reflections on old St Ann’s, the new Bilborough estate, outside toilets, and doilies on coffins.
Huge thanks to TV, film, comedy and poetry legend Henry Normal for sharing these thoughts on his childhood with us. He was incredibly generous with his time, and it’s very greatly appreciated.

Ernest Harwood Greenhalgh was born in Mansfield in 1849 and went on to have a distinguished footballing career with the recently formed Notts County as well as playing for England. His family owned a successful business and it’s likely many current Mansfieldians would have relatives who’d worked for the Greenhalghs.
The Greenhalghs owned Field Mill, which would later become home to Mansfield Town FC, meaning the family’s history is intertwined with those of two traditional Nottinghamshire footballing powers.

Mary lived in Bulwell from her birth in 1878 through to her peculiar death in 1950. None of the locations key to her life and death are present in modern-day Bulwell, which seems to add to the enigma around her.
