If the CEO/Board relationship is solid, you will succeed in meeting the needs of students in your institution. If the CEO/Board relationship is poor, no amount of goodwill, understanding of instructional policy, knowledge of budgets and facilities, or even your acumen with community relations will enable you to serve and meet the needs of the students in your community. Episode 1 will delve into best practices for CEO/Board relations.

In episode 5, we focus on another critical skill: effective budgeting. Effective budgeting is the allocation of resources in a strategic manner that results in the successful implementation of board policy. Have you heard the idioms? "Budget is policy" "Follow the money" or "Put your money, where your mouth is!" Each of these expressions, in its own way, refers to the same thing. Pointing out that the best indicator of the priorities of an institution is evidenced by the budget decisions that have been made to each program area. This discussion covers the construction and preparation of a budget as well as strategic resource allocation.

In this episode, our goal is to provide strategies and vehicles designed to help you understand and embrace the importance of advocacy and fundraising. This aspect of the CEO role has not been well understood, embraced, or supported until fairly recently at the community college level. As this podcast concludes we present a review of the fundraising and advocacy history of the community colleges in California, the legislative and policy constructs that are relevant, and the differences and the co-dependent aspects of advocacy and fundraising. Finally, we review the skills, attributes, and roles of fundraisers in the institution, including the CEO, members of the board of trustees, and designated foundation and institutional advancement staff.
